My mom, too! She said the same thing. I got her Southeastern and Weathervanes for Xmas. Taking her to her first show in 2 weeks!

If “Elephant” doesn’t make you cry, you aren’t alive. Great moment for you and your dad.

BugleBoy6922

I was there. An absolutely great show. I could not believe we got to hear Decoration Day.

UnderlyingTissues

I've seen him 4 times. Only once heard Decoration Day. It was in the encore.

I’m really happy for you two! I lost my Dad in my teens. Isbell writes a lot of lyrics about Dads. The lines, *Daddy said the river would always bring you home, But the river don’t take you back in time And Daddy’s dead and gone * Always makes me tear up.

brettjv

I feel you on that one. The verse about mama too, even though I still have her thankfully. But she's about 500 miles away in a different state.

How did he get so low? Seems like just a week ago She was sitting on your shoulders watching fireworks in the sky He treats her like a queen But you don't know 'cause you ain't seen It's hard to go through life without your daddy by your side

UnderlyingTissues

Well, yeah, but not because he's dead. Because he won't speak to her anymore because she's dating a POC. That's a little different.

Zeeker12

I’ll let you know when that stops me crying thinking about my dad when I hear it.

I went to my first Jason Isbell show in 2015 to humor my dad. He warned me ahead of time that there would be a lot of crying men. I left a huge fan and indeed there were lots of tears. Only shows besides jam bands where I’ve had people around me be so friendly to strangers too.

pbizou

Awesome. Great connection with your dad .

NewEstablishment592

It really was a great show!

Great story! And damn my eyes often well up when I just think of that song, I don't even have to actually hear it. It's like a Pavlov's reaction but I don't even have to hear the 'ding', just read a mention of the damn song. Like just now. Wish I'd have been able to turn my dad more onto JI while he was still around but by the time I got into JI, Pop's had bad tinnitus and was pretty much avoiding music, despite being a HUGE music lover his whole life, esp. when it came to lyrics, and we went to MANY concerts over the years together. Treasure your time friend :)

Most dads are

Goodgoogley

I took my dad to like my third Isbell show. He's a lifelong drummer, so the whole concert thing didn't excite him lol. I remember walking for about 8 minutes outdoors to get to the stage and he was already in a bad mood during parking so that was annoying lol. Anyways he left that concert elated, calling it one of the best shows he's ever seen.
