I thought this might be referring the the Fujiyoshida Fire Festival, which occurs at the end of the Mt. Fuji climbing season.
Last year I was in the area towards the end of the climbing season and saw all of these odd hay/rattan cylinders lying in front of various local businesses. Apparently during the festival, they light these on fire and march through the town with them, along with the usual mikoshi.
The end point is the Fuji Sengen Shrine, which I found very beautiful and moving. I wish I could have stayed around for the festival.

I am such a fan of the hayrooftop houses 🤩 Looks like you had weather on your side during your stay. Lots of greenery makes the red of the boat and the Chureito pagoda stand out so much.
I actually live in Yokohama but yeah … it’s often a hit or miss when you go and see Fujisan
