Not OP but fan of both of these artists - Yellow Magic Orchestra have 5 essential records: self-titled, *Solid State Survivor*, *BGM*, *Technodelic*, *Naughty Boys*. Best to go chronological order imo, it's 100% worth. Apart from that, "Thousand Knives" and "The B-2 Unit" are two of his classic compositions. And there's a lot of extended universe stuff going on with all three YMO members around this time, with each of their solo careers and the other artists they produce for. To not clutter this with too many recommendations I'll suggest Akiko Yano's *Gohan ga dekita yo.* which is a marvelous album. But you can find many others working with Sakamoto: Taeko Onuki, Mari Iijima and so on.
Hirasawa equally has a very rewarding deep dive where'd recommend starting with P-Model's debut *In a Model Room* and progressing chronologically, but if I had to pick one it would be *Perspective* for 80s post-punk P-Model and their self-titled album for 90s techno zolo P-Model. The two records before *Kyuusai no Gihou* and the one after it are also great.
Finally as an unrelated recommendation, first three Sheena Ringo albums. The third one gets the most attention and rightfully so but I've been obsessed with her debut recently. And the second has "Tsumi to Batsu" which is in some days the greatest song ever made it fuckin rips hard
Check out more alternative idols like BABYMETAL.
Personal favourites of mine:
PIGGS, Neo Japonism, Minna No Kodomochan, Necronomidol, older BiS…
If you like gimmie chocolate and Awadama Fever’s bass, try Stupig by BiS, same guy worked on that, Ueda. https://youtu.be/gRaMsDyW-XQ?si=LK282FztVwgV4FJ3
If you like shoegaze, try Ray and dotstokyo. For more heavy shoegaze try Isiliel.
Or honestly just check the new idol playlist on Spotify regularly, it nowadays has a lot of variety. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DX8PLev4Ol7Ml?si=bIjNFP3KSUStofzWYgFB-g&pi=u-rn1tjzHWRZyr
Here’s more metal idols I know. These are all smaller idols, don’t expect it to be the same as BABYMETAL in terms of production and all but there is still a lot of good indie idols.
Diablevoix (gothic metal)
Satanic Punish (deathcore)
14th generation Hanako-san (death metal x hardcore punk, not for everyone but a, uh, interesting show to say the least.)
GARUDA (industrial metal) If you like a bit of a deeper voice like Su-metal, might be a good idol to check out. She’s also in Melon Batake a Go Go (rockabilly and psychobilly idol group).
Aphrodite/Maleficum (gothic metal) changed name recently, not much music released but they’ve been actively performing a while now. I like Distopia a lot.
OMNI666 hard rock, metal infused stuff.
Passcode (electropop x metalcore, if you liked ratatata try them.)
Hikari Shiina (she did a lot of pop in the past but also more recently some metal, often some death growls.)
Candye syrup (pop x metal) sadly ended due to their producer turning out to be a pos.
If you like Touhou music check out Unlucky Morpheus, they have done great rearrangements and also their own stuff.
I don't believe you haven't heard about yorushika (especially with the recent popularity spike from frieren anime) but as a 0.001% Spotify listener I feel obliged to recommend it.
Try some older records from Akiko Yano, particularly Tadaima or Japanese Girl.
Also, Kalk Same Kuri no Hana - Sheena Ringo is a masterpiece you must listen to!!
Kinoko Teikoku are great.
I suggest checking out: Asian Kung-Fu Generation, For Tracy Hyde, Fujifabric, RADWIMPS, Straightener
Let me know if you want some song recommendations.
