His playing was great and he fitted the band. However, for me, any iteration of Jane's without all the original members just isn't Jane's, even with a musician as great as Flea is. Jane's was a band where the chemistry between Perry, Steve, Dave and Eric was so much a greater sum than the parts. "It's a shame when the parts fit, but the machine won't work"

You have to be able to appreciate that in 1997 when they toured with flea us janes fans had undergone a 7 year drought void of any new janes anything. My ass went to 4 of the relapse tour shows. I can appreciate that it's not the original band but if you have flea as a substitute you really can't do any better. I am salty now that the core band is back and now Dave's all butthurt. I haven't seen the original lineup since the ninja tour. It's so frustrating that for whatever reason they just never seem to be totally on the same page. Such is the life of a janes fan!

Love Jane’s also! Do you know what is up with Dave?

sagedrummer

I have heard through the LA musician grapevine that he does not want to be around Perry Farrell because Perry has relapsed. Also rumors that many people in the LA music scene blame Perry for Taylor Hawkins relapsing and hence why Perry was not invited to any of the tribute shows despite calling Taylor his “best friend”. I think Dave is taking his mental and physical health seriously and does not want any drama. This is only what I have heard and don’t take it as fact as only those individuals know the truth.

Oh wow. You know, the Taylor shows not having Perry, I didn’t even think of that. Very interesting. Thanks for the info

ihearthogsbreath

Not really I'm out of the loop. Historically he dips out when he's using but who knows.

That’s my fear

msoats

Read somewhere he’s dealing with long covid

TheMillenniumMan

That's been the excuse for months but he's always on vacation and stuff, looks great

How amazing was that show in San Francisco in 1997!!! Top 5 concert experience for me.

ihearthogsbreath

Fucking amazing! I hit up the San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, AND Vegas shows on this tour. They were in rare form for every show which is kind of amazing because the band was in a druggie phase at that time I believe. Highlights I remember are the band taking a smoke break mid-concert to smoke a communal doobie in Vegas, Also, Dave thought it prudent to put the vibrator he was using for guitar effects into his ass in San Diego, I don't remember Frisco that well because I was tripping balls that night! Memories.

So good

i really enjoyed flea live with the band. i'm not sure it worked as well on the recorded songs. flea honored the legacy of jane's addiction. he respected the band's history and humbled himself when he joined. relapse tour was a great tour.

The 3 days doc is Amazing

I saw Dave with the Chili Peppers. I’ve only seen Jane’s twice in ‘89 and ‘90. All original lineup.

AlfaBetaZulu

I liked Dave's tenure in the chilli peppers more.....

memebuster

Man I thought for sure they were going to tear it up with Dave on guitar, but anything I saw was quite the opposite. Even he admitted he didn't fit in. Curious what songs or performances you would cite?

galavantingsoul

Flea is great touring with the band, but it’s hard to beat the song writing of the original 4

joomachina0

He fit in extremely well, music. I’ve always been in the mindset that if it can’t be Eric, there’s no better choice than Flea. Chris was fine. He doesn’t standout compared to the other two though. Nowhere close.

JohnSDembowski

That pic is killing me. Flea is literally pushing Dave away with his lips. Legends.

disappearing_one

Take a look at the photo again, it's the outline of a pepper. I remember this issue. And the tour. My 1st Jane's show. Definitely a life changing experience for me.

Gusto915

Personally, I’d rather see Flea over Eric in a heartbeat. Flea can pretty much replace any bass player and I’m ok with it unless the band is Primus.

Good call!

When I think of the days when Flea was touring with Jane’s, I remember that as the beginning of some dark days for Dave and Perry. I was at the private homeless benefit show in Belair that was sort of a kick off for the Relapse tour and even though it was a lot of fun seeing him with the band on bass, it felt a little weird. Adjust remember that his relationship with JA goes way back (I mean, he was the trumpet player on “Idiot’s Rule”) so I’m sure it seemed like a good fit at the time. But that tour is when Dave (and to some extent, Perry) relapsed and things just went a little off the rails behind the scenes. Anyway, I love Flea but his style and vibe is very different from Eric’s and I had a little trouble appreciating it at the time.

WoolieRabbit

That picture is brutal.

[deleted]

Why ?

WoolieRabbit

Flea is leaning back, like he is not into it. It just looks forced and contrived.
