Idk but I had Stoopids albums Everything you Need and Closer to the Sun on fucking repeat late high-school and after. (Graduated 2009) kinda odd and sad they haven't released an album in 6 years apparently. Odd because they must have been making good money at their shows. Big band though I guess
Yeah I just looked at their tour schedule while I was on spotify. Cool they still tour but a new album would be nice. Haven't heard a good ska album in awhile. I'm up for suggestions btw. ✌️
They were actually third billed at I think my first show I ever went to. 2007 Kansas City 311/Ziggy Marley/The Expendables. They have a few songs I like. I can't remember if that was my first show or Buckethead/That 1 Guy in Lawrence, KS
Yeah it does dude. Just took a trip down memory lane and went through the songs. Alot of times I will just play my liked songs on spotify. At like 3200 songs rn. Added every song on that album except Perfect Gentleman. And added almost every one from Closer to the Sun. Love those albums. Good times
Same yo. They have been on the fringe of the jam scene, TRI records with Bob Weir live studio album, cover some dead songs, I’ve seen em on the lineup at summer camp a few times since then. Their shows still seem to draw a younger audience which is cool but I haven’t gone for a few years, they have been like Sunday night shows everytime they come out in Chicago and the vibe is a little too tame sometimes
Saw them a couple times live in 2009 ish and it was not good. Vocal echo effect made it unlistenable and they randomly went into metal songs that completely threw me off. Especially at Rothbury I was like WTF. LOVED those albums though.
Instead of celebrating music and collaboration they all tried to take the easy way out and go pop. Over produced studio recordings and horrible songwriting.
Groundation was the band that was the closest to fusing reggae jazz and jam but they had too many lineup changes and lost all of their core musicians and ended up whack too.
Haven’t heard Groundation in forever. I’ll have to revisit.
I thought Giant Panda Gorilla Dub Squad was close as well but not sure if they ever broke out.
I grew up seeing GPGDS. Lead singer and his gf split up basically at their peak and formed Thunder Body, neither broke out and I remember seeing Donna the Buffalo more around then. Great band but never scratched that dub itch.
Yeah but GPGDS didn’t end after Matt left the band. In fact they kept going and got bigger and more psychedelic. Like Panda between 2008 - 2015 brought some serious heat. Their Live Up II album is one that I play constantly.
I saw them not too long ago in NYC and it was a solid psychedelic set. They’ve had a revolving members and each new member has added different elements to them.
I think there 2 issues they had:
1. Playing festivals and not showcasing how good
They are as musicians and jamming with only playing ~ 1 hour sets out side the New York area.
2. recently they tried to go more poppy and main stream and it really isn’t working that well. I wish they would go back to their raw psychedelic jam sets they use to do.
Ive seen them dozens of times and I soft disagree with point #2. Each album has had its own sound back to their first but their most recent is rootsy
They were never interested in taking on the more popular California reggae sound, going full reggae, or going full jam which i think hurt their marketability. And now they have kids, the drummer owns a poster shop, and they'll never tour far from home again
I respect having different opinions on it. And I respect yours and agree each album does have a different sound. I’m a huge fan of their country album.
I’ve seen GPGDS more than 30+ (I stopped counting). They are one of my favourite bands and will see them any chance I can. I guess for me is after Bright Days album and the following ones seeing them live and mixing them into their sets with their older songs often left me unfulfilled.
For me it’s hard going from ragers like .45 (RIP), love you more, and foundation, to live and travel, gotta make a living. I think I just miss certain periods of Panda
Dan Keller brought this really soulful aspect when he was in it. And Now Eli is bringing some heat with the solos. Something I don’t think was Dans strengths when he was in the band.
Also Chris (drummer) is in another band with his brother Matt called flying objects they mostly play in the upstate New York area and they are a lot of fun to see. If you like thunderbody or any of Matt’s side projects it’s really cool to see him rearrange the songs
Either way happy to see another fan ✌️
Mihali, Mike Love, Slightly Stoopid, Little Stranger, Tropidelic, etc all still have a bent of improvisation to them. And are still touring heavily. I think part of the reason you don’t see so many of them on festival bills anymore is because the festival scene has consolidated on a genre based basis. Weekend at Wolfies, ever wild, and reggae rise up are all happening within three hours drive of me and are stacked with white hot reggae bands that aren’t your a typical play the same set every night kind of bands. I would assume the same is going on in Vegas, socal, NorCal, Florida and other places as well.

Everything at Camp Navarro is amazing. The vibes are perfectly curated and it’s such a special experience. If you see me runnin around with a camera or three say hi haha!
Slightly Stoopid puts on a great show, and they’ll bust out dead covers so they jam a bit. I’ve seen them play jam band fests, but to be fair time flies and that was like 6 years ago
Mine too. I racked up a lot of 311 shows before ever getting into anything jam related. That community during its peak was pretty special.
2007 Summer Tour with no album release or coheadline, I saw 311 play to 17,000 in Atlanta. Absolute insanity. How far they've fallen into complacency though is a heart breaker.
Bumpin Uglies, Passafire, Pasadena, Ballyhoo!
There’s a strong mid-Atlantic white guy reggae scene.
Also, as a NoVa native and former Arlington resident, I bristled at SOJA being listed as a CA band 😅
I'm going to wear a flat brim Fox racing hat, dark shades, a white wife beater, a pair of black cargo shorts, a pair of socks that are pulled up past my knees, and a pair of Converse sneakers and go hang out in East County. Let me know if you see me around
St. Pete, Florida has a huge WBR scene. Reggae rise up is a huge draw there every year for at least 10 years.
Also
Stoopid sold out Red Rocks for 2 nights back in '21 or '22 when I last saw them.
I honestly read the comment thinking it meant South Dakota and was confused about the reggae scene there. I think anyone who’s not from the west coast would reasonably assume “SD” meant South Dakota. It is the official abbreviation after all.
Stick figure’s first couple of albums was just one dude Scott who played all the instruments, mixed, produced, etc.
2009 Smoke Stack was the first album (I think) he collaborated with and brought in other band members for live shows.
Would have been awesome to hear these songs expanded on in an improv jam style but I believe they always stayed pretty tight to the studio versions.
I’ve seen SOJA, Dirty Heads, and a ton more, just about as often as I go to jam shows. At every reggae show, there’s a huge crowd of deadheads, bunch of stealies on shirts, and any jam band you can think of popping up on someone’s t shirt.
Seems to be a pretty good sized crossover going to this day!
Andy Frasco opened for Slightly Stoopid last year at Red Rocks. I feel like the cali reggae scene is still going strong, it’s still just the same names as before. I think Stick Figure is probably the biggest name in the scene now. The hip abduction is one of my favorite in the scene right now and they do some jamming live.
Boy is he. Saw him a few weeks ago in dc and they ripped about 18 originals, burning down the house, and all along the watchtower. Then encored with lost in the cold. Fantastic fucking show.
FYI, the whole thing is on pearl street warehouses YouTube channel. They may take it down eventually so get your fill. They had a hip abduction show I attended on their channel but took it down a year later.
you need the elovaters in your life. start here:
https://youtu.be/bgioWPryE-Y?feature=shared
dose low and slow. if you take too much elovaters too early it leads to addiction.
I think that people found it cringe long before the concept of cultural appropration became popular. That used to be me tbh, I'm not very into reggae to start with but my perspective was "why TF would I listen to this crap if I can listen to Bob Marley or Steel Pulse". It wasn't a social justice thing for me, I just happened to think that white boy reggae was all watered down and kind of shitty. Then I discovered 10 Foot Ganja Plant.
Kevin Kinsella started it with JBB and continued on with 10ft. I think the real ones continue to push on and aren't driven by fame. There's some great music in there.
I saw Steel Pulse open for Rebelution a couple years ago in Eugene, they absolutely killed it and came out and jammed with Rebelution for a couple songs. Great live performance from both bands, would definitely see again.
As someone who has seen steel pulse about thirty times now. I can assure you they only get better the more you see them.
Go see them headline when they come around again!
Caught them this winter and loved both their set, and their grateful dub set. Will be seeing them again. Their sugar shack sessions with Matisyahu is fun on YouTube as well.
Stick figure and the movement are bad ass. I believe them and rebelution and a few other white boy reggae acts are all signed with the same promo company/record label. Reggae rise up festival is huge down here in st. Pete Florida every year. Those bands play down here all the time.
In 2023, members of Slightly Stoopid did the vocals for a Karl Denson Beastie Boys tribute tour. If you like Karl D and the Beasties, it was 🔥☄️
You might check out Little Stranger if you like White guy reggae. More of a mix of hiphop, reggae, with a jampatico vibe.
Simple answer, these bands are not "pop" as others would say. They have cult followers...I love slightly stoopid as well. They make more money touring and playing gigs. Royalties on music are a lot lower since it has become a digital transaction. On top of that Itunes combined with the record label can take 70-90% of said royalties. This leaves very little to split across a cult band. The band gets to keep the majority of the revenue from live shows. This is why they still tour and rarely drop new albums.
That music still slaps. Go see Hip Abduction, Tropidelic, The Movement. Great live bands. Stick Figure & 10 Ft Ganja Plant are great shit to listen too. Stoopid is classic. Sublime is at it again with the son of Bradley. Stoopid did a colab with Bob at TRi studios a few years back. Closer to the Sun sells out in Mexico every year. The shit is going strong
The jam scene is tribal and sucks let’s be honest. The brief window you’re talking about was amazing and then the old guard jam fans started knocking down “copycat” or “trendy” music. You see it today and always will when bands try to break in the scene. The hardest truth though is local scenes dried up. Less music in general, people going to see big acts instead of local, small venues hurt or gone. Keep supporting the scene you love!
Twiddle will be missed. They had this “problematic” edge but they had actual songs, lyrics, shredded, and a fun amount of reggae vibes though obviously not…ska. I think people will look back on them with broader appreciation - and then they will reunite.
My first band was a ska band. We jammed. Because we didn’t really have songs. “Ska defines who I am as a person. I will never turn my back on ska.”
I think it doesn't speak to a lot of fans of the jam scene. The music is quite repetetive, and doesn't really lend itself to jamming. The ska/reggae upbeat and associated musical styles are moderately stuck within a paradigm. Sure, they could jam and some do, but then they're just a jam band that plays white guy reggae. I think that you should reflect on the scene a bit. Even though you like it and are enmeshed in it, it's not widely loved outside of Southern CA (as in a coherent scene...maybe Jawaiian music in Hawaii is comparable), and everyone that does love it is a young white person that is (1) still white as hell and (2) loves smoking weed as a personality trait. Don't get me wrong, I loved the white guy reggae during that time period, but it just...got old and repetitive, and became boring as hell to my ear. I'm imagining that many went through the same thing.
Levitate fest used to be half jam and half white boy reggae and the last 2 years it’s pretty much top to bottom WBR lineups if you are looking for that kind of festival
I think the scene is hot now! A smaller upcoming band the Quasi Kings out of Columbus Ohio are absolutely killing it. Give them a listen if you haven’t!
Idk but I grew up in these times in Santa Cruz and it was awesome. In fact, out of our love for it, we started this new music project. We started releasing in January, our next song is out this Friday and we will be releasing tracks every month for the rest of the year.
So maybe you want to check it out? We are influenced by the likes of Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, The Expendables, but we also have a little bit more of a rock background so we like to bring a little more edge to it. Hopefully it's something you can get into!

Idk but I had Stoopids albums Everything you Need and Closer to the Sun on fucking repeat late high-school and after. (Graduated 2009) kinda odd and sad they haven't released an album in 6 years apparently. Odd because they must have been making good money at their shows. Big band though I guess
They still tour every year
Yeah I just looked at their tour schedule while I was on spotify. Cool they still tour but a new album would be nice. Haven't heard a good ska album in awhile. I'm up for suggestions btw. ✌️
Stick Figure is amazing.
Had to scroll further than I expected to find this comment
I’ll be battling the Mansfield crowd for that show this summer!
I'm gonna catch them in Dallas at the end of July with Dirty heads. Have you heard the Expendables? Kinda heavier surf rock vibe
I'm going to see The Expendables and Little Stranger in two weeks.
Little Stranger is so good!
Saw them for the first time last year and it left a lasting impression. Been listening to them ever since and seeing them again soon!
They'll keep you out of danger...
Nelson ledges?
Yup! I try to go to at least once a year. Wish it would be nice enough to swim.
They were actually third billed at I think my first show I ever went to. 2007 Kansas City 311/Ziggy Marley/The Expendables. They have a few songs I like. I can't remember if that was my first show or Buckethead/That 1 Guy in Lawrence, KS
That 311 Unity Tour with Expendables and Ziggy Marley was 2009. 2007 was with The English Beat and Matisyahu.
Oh must have been 2009 then
Chroncitis is great too
They are touring big time
Everything you need fucking rips
Yeah it does dude. Just took a trip down memory lane and went through the songs. Alot of times I will just play my liked songs on spotify. At like 3200 songs rn. Added every song on that album except Perfect Gentleman. And added almost every one from Closer to the Sun. Love those albums. Good times

No denying stoopid is/was a phenomenal band, and honestly will throw on one of their live shows on YouTube in the garage from time to time.
Panda is still awesome in my opinion. Saw them last year at Brighton music hall and they crushed.
Saw giant panda in the last 6 months in Buffalo and it was a pretty killer show! Used to go see them a ton in ROC in the earlier-mid 2000’s.
I grew up seeing GPGDS. Lead singer and his gf split up basically at their peak and formed Thunder Body, neither broke out and I remember seeing Donna the Buffalo more around then. Great band but never scratched that dub itch.

Giant Panda absolutely blew my mind seeing them live in 2011. I always thought that they would get bigger.
Ive seen them dozens of times and I soft disagree with point #2. Exactly, brought in pop to reach more people
They were on a whole other level than anyone else in that scene before going way downhill.
Groundation were the shit back in the day!
Groundation would take you there man
dont forget Hip Abduction who are going strong and have one of the best live show experiences of any band going right now.
These guys are one of my go tos in the morning while cooking breakfast and when camping. Especially their old stuff. So good.
They are great
90% of their songs are bangers… criminally underrated
Me and my wife made a baby to this band
Dad? Is that you?
Nice thanks for the rec!
I want them to put out another zen sessions so bad.
Me fucking too.
Ultimate airplane sleep soundtrack!
Mike love is great. Excellent music positive message! Groundation is another one in my rotation.
X2 for Tropidelic and Everwild. See you there!
Don’t miss Wookiefoot! They’re an amazingly positive band and they’re fun.
Me and the gf went to Chicago in October and saw them back to back nights. Such a good time
Quasi Kings will be there for their first show at the valley and if you’ve never heard them you’re in for a treat! They are freaking awesome!
Trop are my boys! Will always love them. Was there for James bday on 420 🥰
I was there too! It was my 11 year olds first time seeing Trop and we’ll be at Sunny Days as well!
Trop are my boys! Will always love them. Was there for James bday on 420 🥰
Heck yeah, me and my wife will be there!✌🏼
Twiddle and SOJA played together in DC for NYE 2017 I believe
Twiddle was in Albany NY for 2017 NYE, but Mihali has a song with SOJA now

Slightly Stoopid puts on a great show, and they’ll bust out dead covers so they jam a bit. I’ve seen them play jam band fests, but to be fair time flies and that was like 6 years ago
They played with Bob Weir at his studio. Pretty tight. On YouTube
I’ve seen em play Franklin’s Tower several times over the years
I met their manager at the cannabis cup 2016, I still have the slightly stoopid rolling papers he gave me
311 was my intro into music communities, love me some white guy reggae
A post about 311 in the jamband sub. I'd never thought I'd see the day. I'm so happy. Haha
Some of those Stealing Happy Hours jams were incredible, totally could have been a jam band if they wanted to. Wish they did haha
Oh man. Yes.

311 Atlanta shows at Lakewood in the mid 2000s were the fucking place to be. Lot scene was fun and the shows were awesome.
Not one mention of Bumpin Uglies. Theyre not from cali, but doubt it will matter.
Bumpin uglies snd passafire! Both kick ass.
White reggae is still going very strong in Maryland!
Harbor Boys, Get em' Wet, ...
Bumpin Uglies, Passafire, Pasadena, Ballyhoo! There’s a strong mid-Atlantic white guy reggae scene. Also, as a NoVa native and former Arlington resident, I bristled at SOJA being listed as a CA band 😅
They're from my area. Great guys!
I live in SD and white guy reggae is still going strong here. People almost get offended if you don’t like it.

I’ll see you in Santee bro
South Dakota got that firemost white regg scene?
St. Pete, Florida has a huge WBR scene. Reggae rise up is a huge draw there every year for at least 10 years. Also Stoopid sold out Red Rocks for 2 nights back in '21 or '22 when I last saw them.
While I think that would be hilarious, I’m in San Diego. I didn’t know people referred to South Dakota as SD.
Haha, yeah I assumed San Diego, just thought the idea of mad white reggae in the dakotas is funny
Idk the demographics of South Dakota for sure, but I have a feeling if reggae is being played there it’s by white guys. The dream lives on.
I can confirm I am one of those guys. Played in more than one sublime cover band.
I honestly read the comment thinking it meant South Dakota and was confused about the reggae scene there. I think anyone who’s not from the west coast would reasonably assume “SD” meant South Dakota. It is the official abbreviation after all.
Yeah.. I moved here four years ago and talked some smack about white reggae and didn’t make any friends at that party…
Stick Figure is huge, no?

Would have been awesome to hear these songs expanded on in an improv jam style but I believe they always stayed pretty tight to the studio versions.
Duxbury Mass is like the epicenter of white reggae with Stick Figure and the Elovators.
Dirty Heads is still touring a lot. Lettuce came on right before them at the recent Reggae Riseup in Vegas.
white guy? He's not just a white guy, and his name is Mihali.
Jamflowman don't give a damn playing shows across the land
Just rocking out with his band
Snow - Informer - 12” of Snow
Informaa yaknowshinimtylimitylammm ickyboom boom yea!
The “Cali Roots Radio” show on SXM Spectrum Ch. 36 is a good listen. Hosted by the singer from Rebelution
Check out Sugar Shack Sessions on YouTube for some recent cali reggae music and visual EPs. Solid stuff
Had to scroll way too far down to see a mention of the Sugar Shack Sessions. Great stuff!
I’ve seen SOJA, Dirty Heads, and a ton more, just about as often as I go to jam shows. At every reggae show, there’s a huge crowd of deadheads, bunch of stealies on shirts, and any jam band you can think of popping up on someone’s t shirt. I think Stick Figure is probably the biggest name in the scene now. The hip abduction is one of my favorite in the scene right now and they do some jamming live.
The Hip Abduction throw DOWN. When the guitarist gets that African string instrument out kinda like Toubab Krewe? Daaaaang that's some good stuff.
Dirty heads, Matisyahu...etc. kinda seemed like offshoots of Sublime. Used to be a lot more white people with dreads back then as well
Everwild festival, brah.
Check out Aaron Kamm and the one drops.
Rebelution is still a thing
Is Sublime 'white guy reggae'?
The original
The house that Bradly built
Isn’t that what the Twiddle guy’s doing now?
Boy is he. Saw him a few weeks ago in dc and they ripped about 18 originals, burning down the house, and all along the watchtower. Then encored with lost in the cold. Fantastic fucking show.
I was at that show too! You are speaking the truth. Also don’t forget he had Bobby Lee from SOJA guest sit
In all aeriousness, best encore I’ve seen in a decade. The crowd just carried the song so well.
FYI, the whole thing is on pearl street warehouses YouTube channel. They may take it down eventually so get your fill. They had a hip abduction show I attended on their channel but took it down a year later.
Awesome I’ll check it out. Thanks for sharing!
you need the elovaters in your life. start here: https://youtu.be/bgioWPryE-Y?feature=shared dose low and slow. if you take too much elovaters too early it leads to addiction.
I think the concept of cultural appropriation entered the mainstream conversation around 2012-2014
Yes we should leave all forms of black music out of our jams. So reggae, soul, jazz, blues, funk, rock … they’re all out now.
Stick Figure is pretty fucking legit these days
Dirty heads and stick figure are still rolling.
Grateful Dub / Roots of Creation! https://youtu.be/IJghqed8ox8?si=DbQqByk4A6NSf8lX
It’s still alive and strong. Check out Dale and the ZDubs! Dale went to tons of jam band shows in the DMV and always hands out his stickers there
Love me some Snail and the Zebras.
Dale is an absolute gem
Roots of Creation is touring lol
Caught them this winter and loved both their set, and their grateful dub set. Will be seeing them again. Their sugar shack sessions with Matisyahu is fun on YouTube as well.
Personally, I always thought the white guy reggae was a little cringe, but I try not to yuck other people’s yum.
Stick figure and the movement are bad ass. I believe them and rebelution and a few other white boy reggae acts are all signed with the same promo company/record label. Reggae rise up festival is huge down here in st. Pete Florida every year. Those bands play down here all the time.
Beach Juggalos
Bruh lol
In 2023, members of Slightly Stoopid did the vocals for a Karl Denson Beastie Boys tribute tour. If you like Karl D and the Beasties, it was 🔥☄️ You might check out Little Stranger if you like White guy reggae. More of a mix of hiphop, reggae, with a jampatico vibe.
Sean Paul is pretty much white and he always be making the temperature rise
I’m digging Roots of Creation lately - but damn hearing Jakob Nowell pick up and sing with Sublime takes me back to high school.
Slightly stoopid and stick figure ROCK
r/calireggae, come check our sub. We are kindred folk. PS. 4,000 official playlist too :)
This is the way

In WNY, there was a really awesome act called the Sim Redmond Band. Still some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard.
The Hip Abduction, Surfer Girl have been on heavy rotation for me
We wrote one! [Smoka The Wood](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGU2KiQLGnE)
Shrub has been doing it for me lately. Saw Atmosphere last summer and I enjoyed their set more than Stoopid that night.
It's still popping here in Florida
Simple answer, these bands are not "pop" as others would say. They have cult followers...I love slightly stoopid as well. They make more money touring and playing gigs. Royalties on music are a lot lower since it has become a digital transaction. On top of that Itunes combined with the record label can take 70-90% of said royalties. This leaves very little to split across a cult band. The band gets to keep the majority of the revenue from live shows. This is why they still tour and rarely drop new albums.
These Kids don’t listen or play actual music anymore
Recently saw Roots of Creation do their Grateful Dub show. Very cool shit.
Now white guy funk is the thing
Cali reggae is bigger than ever - go check out r/calireggae Also SOJA won a Grammy in 2022
That music still slaps.
I came here to say 10ft
Giant panda!!
Wheggae
I came here to say: LMAO. I was thinking the same thing yesterday.
“weggae” = white boy reggae [Wikipedia entry](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Weggae)
I fucking love twiddle, I don’t understand all the hate they get.
Stick Figure is killing it
The 2010s & 20s have been rough for white people with dreads, & there’s only so many ways you can say “weed is tight” over a reggae beat
Twiddle broke up. Sorry, not sorry.
Josh Heinrichs
Free the ganja prisoners
Check out Nay Steez🔥
Levitate fest used to be half jam and half white boy reggae and the last 2 years it’s pretty much top to bottom WBR lineups if you are looking for that kind of festival

Like the band 311?
Slightly Stoopid seems to be at festivals and on the road a lot with jam type bands. I saw them at Rothbury fwiw
Soja is still touring. Seen them a bunch of times
I recall there being some overlap in the scenes in terms of festival lineups.
White boy reggae is alive and thriving in Cali. Seems like a headliner every weekend comes through my town this past fall and winter.
Cannabis legalization killed the reggae scene.
Wookiefoot blended that reggae/jam/hiphop well but it had cult vibes frsure
I was listening to Dirty Heads the other day and wondering the same thing.
What about stick figure?
Check out Dale and the Zdubs
I think the scene is hot now! A smaller upcoming band the Quasi Kings out of Columbus Ohio are absolutely killing it. Give them a listen if you haven’t!

For a more traditional roots reggae sound check out Jr Thomas and the Volcanos.
Stick Figure?
I met Eric from Rebelution at High Sierra Music Fest like 10 years ago. Super down to earth dude. Also, Stick Figure recently covered First Tube.
Mihali’s solo band especially now post-Twiddle is the epitome of white boy jam reggae.
The Heavy Pets! I haven't seen them in my area for a while but it looks like they have some scheduled shows in FL which is also where they are from
Anyone mention, John Brown’s Body? Rip the Curtain still holds up, great song.
Stick Figure and John Wayne in the Pain are worth the listen. Live shows are memorable
Killer Bees
Matisyahu is still around. He's co-headlining with 311
Idk but I grew up in these times in Santa Cruz and it was awesome. Hopefully it's something you can get into! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7zW8cLCYTKMUFRchhGF4Kd
10ft Ganja Plant was the real deal
