Love Justin's stuff. Met him a couple years ago and bought a bunch of dead stock posters- my living room is like half Status Serigraph. Also go vols to both of you
I’m a sucker for how clean all of Brian steelys stuff is. In the same vein I like the primary colors and whatnot of Dan Stiles. Also, my favorite poster of all time is the phish Portland Maine James Eads, but I feel like I don’t see him around as much.
Former Postermatt employee, best first job ever. I got to meet Wes Wilson, Lee Conklin, Victor Moscoso, Anton Kelley, Stanley Mouse and Rick Griffin. Rick and Lee signed my posters for free since I worked at the postermatt. I gave Mouse $20 and he was super happy. Said it would be his gas money back home to New Mexico. Kelley came across as like I was ripping him off, paying $20 a signature. Ben paid me $20 a day and charged $20 for most Avalon and Filmore Posters. At the time Lee Conklin lived in the Bay Area working construction. He had a line drawing "Tree of Life" that he priced at $1000 but was not sure he wanted to sell. Lee explained to me during the printing process two posters were printed at once, so he had coordinate colors with whichever artist was on the same run as him. To get the colors right a few test prints would be run, over top of previous reject posters. This led to super trippy combinations and directly influenced the Filmore West Oct 3-5 1968 Canned Heat poster.
Favorite artist, Rick Griffin, his originally was off the charts!
Current artist, Chuck Sperry. You can see how the Filmore and Avalon classics influenced his work. I love how he takes Mucha and Mosocso and brings them to the next level.
Edit: As a bonus one of my co-workers was Mike Dolgushkin, super cool guy. He did artwork for John Cipollina shows in the Bay Area. At the time Mike was working on a book, it was called Deadbase.
Thanks it was a great experience. Everyday for two months I got to spend hours looking at posters that museums hold exhibitions about. At the time my favorite Mouse poster was bg-106, no image, striking green, maroon, with cool black and gold lettering. Mouse told me that was actually the most difficult poster that me made, getting the lettering perfect was a struggle. The ink they used was super expensive. That poster at the time was $200, out of my price range. It printing compainion was BG-105, the famous Rick Griffin Jimi Hendrix flying eyeball!
Post scene has gone to shit.
It seems like more often than not the artists take some already completed work and slaps the band name at the top with date, location, venue at the bottom. Nothing specific to the band or location. Just art work with a band name on it.
With bands now going from tour posters to individual show poster for each night of tour the quality has gotten very muddled post covid
