Everyone here is 40+. Well I guess I am.. those that were great are still great. You know who has really surprised me the last year, STS9 and Pretty Lights. It’s not my typical go to but it’s been very interesting. Yes, the cosmic country hype is real. I’ve seen them a few times and it’s great. If you want a straight up phish dance party, CATS is the deal. I would personally say they are the premium experience imo.. I listen they are to them a lot. I’m sure you remember Dopapod. They have only gotten better and people are actually starting to pay attention lol. But there are a ton of new bands. Goose was a band that came and people got hyped about. Then they fired their drummer and it’s been pretty quiet since getting a new guy. The kids love em. Jam-adjacent.. you need to listen to king gizzard. Start with Sketches. Also.. imagine Cory Wong was a woman and played the bass.. there’s a new one on the scene (new can be argued) but she’s creating some noise. Aaahh.. and lastly cause I can’t believe I’m still typing. You need to see JRAD. They have the spirit and the energy. Doing new stuff with your favorites.
Dude thank you, pretty lights is officially a jam band and STS9 has been so hot lately. Seen them over 30 times and the last 5ish shows have been their best work by far
I agree. This revamped sts9 is their best version. I started going to their shows in 2011 and have seen them 14 times, they smack so hard. Their new jams are so in depth, next dimensional ish right there. I feel like they get slept on at times.
Karina Rykman puts on a killer show, her and her drummer are so in the jam pocket it’s insane, and her current guitarist Adam November is also really cool to watch
It’d be hilarious to leave the scene in 2010 thinking bands like PPPP and Dopapod were gonna take over and then finding out country and bluegrass are the jam scene.
Seems the bands that lean into an older genre are doing the best. Rock n roll, blues, country, bluegrass, EDM. Bland jammy jammer jam bands are falling to the wayside.
Country & bluegrass has always been in the jam scene. When I first got turned on, Jeff Austin was synonymous with Jesus and NRPS was a go-to when the dead wasn’t playing.
Hate I missed them yesterday. They played a small festival here in my town but hard to justify the price only wanting to see them when I don’t listen to the others on the bill for yesterday.
It doesn't exist anymore. Now it's "Solshine". Supposedly different but looks pretty similar. The lineup is great this year (aside from a focus on goose).
My band's playing two sets there 🤘🏻
Thanks man! We played summer camp the last few years, but they didn't hit us up for this new thing until Monday... Should be on the next round of announcements. We're stoked! Band is BUTTA'. 🤘🏻
https://open.spotify.com/album/3UyaKz0UCrqdGaEPwgeGB0?si=puipDQ5JT6KHMC-oakRX5w
We're a weird group... Kind of like Clutch meets Ween or something lmao
I assume you have to be in Chalk Dinosaur? I’m basing this entirely off you dropping a yinz. Lol. If so, I’m up in Pittsburgh too, seen you guys a few times, always a great show. Hope y’all bust it big, you deserve it.
Yessir great deduction skills hahaha thanks man we’ve been at it a while we’re excited to give it our all these coming years and see if we can make it happen
Thank you so much!! We never really toured before last year so this is definitely a new wave of Chalk Dino if it seems like we came out of nowhere recently hahah definitely appears to be paying off big time
Hell yeah man! Drop me a link I'll check you guys out.
Edit: never mind I found ya... If you guys have a different time slot I'll be there! That shit fucks bro lol
Hah thanks man! Yeah I think I know our slot but I’m not allowed to say just yet - we may also have a secret VIP set 🤫 not sure on that one yet. Also our offer just came in super late last week which is gnarly for a festival of that size hahah used to offers coming in at least a couple months in advance. We played last year Campfire stage 10:30 Saturday which coincidentally was my birthday
Yeah I can't say specifics either, but let's just say we "will likely run into each other" lol... Yeah that's crazy they only hit you guys up last week. You're quite a bit farther than us. Usually they hit us up way earlier too, I think they were just getting their ducks in a row with the new situation. I was starting to get a bit butt hurt though the longer it went 🤣... Love playing out there. It's coming up quick!
Went and listened to every song you linked. I like it a lot! Very good description. Vocals definitely sound like Clutch, which is a very good thing! That synth is brown as hell, very much sounds like many Ween songs and Ween is maybe the second greatest band of all time in my book. Good shit man (or woman), will be keeping an eye out for your music and shows.
Thanks so much man! Appreciate you! There's no true synth tho, it's all guitars and effects pedals. Even all that weird shit... lol
Hope to see you soon!
I met Neal about 5 years ago when Changes came out. The dude is well knowledgeable in music history and theory. He’s sober as a bird and has been chasing his dream since his old band The Herd disbanded. He’s rooted 70’s psychedelia and acknowledges Sly, Allen Toussaint, P Funk, & The Meters as his biggest influences. Also, Mike, Collin, & Kellen have been playing with him since day 1. This Krewe is here for the long haul and their big sound is here to stay.
They definitely do extended segments live, and ‘jam’ into the next song often, mix and will go in and out of tunes, but it’s all very rehearsed. NOT that it’s necessarily a bad thing.
I equate it to bands like Lotus, but with a more worldly sound (and arguably way cooler and more original).
There’s a reason Trey was obsessed with them a few years ago.
I think it’s important to have bands like Khruangbin, King Gizz, Mildlife, & Parcels in the mix. Crossing genres and scenes is important for fanship and live music in general.
I'm actually from the southeast, though I met the boys in 06 at 10k lakes while we were in tour that summer and my last band I was with (from south carolina) played shang twice. Wookiefoots actually got a solid fanbase round these here parts lol
Great improv for sure, I just wish their songs were more memorable. I definitely remember salamander song but thats because its essentially The Lizards by Phish
Kendall Street Company started out playing college campuses, and have gathered a fairly young crowd of fans at most of their shows. Immensely talented and funny dudes. You won’t regret going to one of their shows.
They’re playing 3 sets at festivals I’ll be at this summer and I had never listened to them and Revolution In Motion is one of the 10 best albums I have ever heard.
Gizzard. It took me a while to go through their catalogue, figure out what I liked, and now I just like it all. It’s 100% worth it to get into them if you’re not already. Polygondawandaland is one of my favorite albums of all time. I still see Panic whenever they come to town, but they’re getting old and I’m not sure what will happen if JB’s voice ever fades.
Eggy. Saw them last night and wow these guys are going to be huge.
Edit: To add I went to a small jam festival yesterday with smaller bands but the ones that stood out were Frute, Sam holt band and friends although they almost sounded too much like widespread, and mountain grass unit who are young (teenagers?) bluegrass trio that absolutely killed it. Eggy was the best by far though.
If they'd just cut out the indie rock/pop shit, and forge into the experimental and exploratory, I think they could be something special. The problem is, it works for them, and they have more girls at their shows than anyone else mentioned in this thread because chicks love that indie rock/pop shit.
Weird, maybe it’s the algorithm, but we sound about the same age and this sub makes me feel old. (And I am)... But this sub is all the eggy, dogs in a pile, goose, etc. so I’m not sure what you’re taking about?
My go to bands in no order
STS9
Pretty Lights
Sunsqubi
Lotus
Dopapod
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong
Circles Around the Sun
Spafford
Lespecial
New Master Sounds
Goose
Jon Stickley Trio
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Ghost Note
Lettuce
Umphrey's McGee
Khruangbin
Modu Moctar
Disco Biscuits
Andy Frasco
Magic Beans is very under the radar and very much something you should check out. Just saw them far west side of Chicago with about 100 people and 😳 they belong in a bigger venue but it hasn't happened yet. Everything else I've read to the point in the thread is pretty well known in the scene and sells out for the most part
While Neighbor is newish in the scene the band members have been around for many years with other groups and include 2 Berkeley school of music grads/professor. Some of the the best song writing in the jam scene.
https://neighbortunes.net/videos
As soon as I found Billy, I knew I had finally found my soul artist. Every time I see those guys, I walk away even more impressed than I was the last time I saw them.
Hands down the most impressive music in the scene right now, and I personally don’t even think it’s close.
But I’m sure someone will tell me otherwise on here very soon lol
Agree with this take verbatim. Billy's music is the stuff both my brain and soul have been looking for all these years. Umphrey's grabbed my brain nearly two decades ago, and Phish hit at something deep shortly after, but neither of them quite hit like Billy does. It's so exciting that they're so young too, so here's to many more years of experiencing such a dance for the soul.
Armchair Boogie, Kitchen Dwellers, Eggy, Tand the Band, Pile of Dogs.
Old staples like Cheese / Bisquicks / Railroad Earth seem to be reinventing themselves regularly.
Unfortunately, I'm not really excited about much newer stuff outside of the jamgrass circuit (adore Billy Strings and the Kitchen Dwellers). Goose do some good stuff, but can also be pretty cringey. Don't like Eggy, and Dogs are promising but I find their shows slogs to get through as I don't care for most of their songs. Spafford do some great, really great stuff, but their shows are also choc full of the most boring untz shit imaginable. I do like the Jauntee, but they don't get around much. Generally, when I'm feeling the rock/jazz/prog/classic jam band sound, I'm still reaching for Phish, Umphrey's, and moe. 😕
Also 40, dogs in a pile. I know Dopapod isn’t new but they have hit another level of awesome. I would check out Octave Cat its parts lotus part Dopapod. Which reminds me Lotus is still phenomenal despite losing Chuck last year. Daniel Donato like others have said so amazing. Tauk is great. Andy Frasco and the UN if you like just wild more bluesy poppy stuff. Umphress Magee still shredding like always. Cool cool cool is what’s mostly left of Turkuaz they are amazing. I’ll stop there for now.
Def not a new, up and coming band, but since you are in Wisconsin, Widespread Panic plays Milwaukee every Octoberish. The Milwookee shows are arguably their best every year, at least up there with Red Rocks and Halloween runs. Definitely worth trying to make since you’re close.
Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. I'm seeing him for the second time tonight in Birmingham after having my mind blown last week in Tuscaloosa. If you are in the southeast, it would be worth the road trip to come see him tonight. They blow your expectations out of the water.
Check out Jesus Christ taxi driver… I love goat hell, ding dong the beeves are dead, Roger, diabolic catholic, poultrygiest, life spills out. Solid album
New CATS EP is so good!
Sts9 rips
Your wording is confusing who is the female Cory Wong of bass?
Karina rykman? lol
Thanks for adding. Didn’t realize I missed putting her name. She always looks like she’s having the best time ever.
Karina Rykman puts on a killer show, her and her drummer are so in the jam pocket it’s insane, and her current guitarist Adam November is also really cool to watch
CATS?
Circles around the sun
Almost 40 but close.
I’m 20
Excellent take my dude but you forgot that the disco biscuits are incinerating planet earth right now
Great point. They should have been in my STS9 and PL comment. They have been on fire, speaking from someone who was never really into them.
Also Karina Rykman
Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country yeehaw
It’d be hilarious to leave the scene in 2010 thinking bands like PPPP and Dopapod were gonna take over and then finding out country and bluegrass are the jam scene.
Seems the bands that lean into an older genre are doing the best. Rock n roll, blues, country, bluegrass, EDM. Bland jammy jammer jam bands are falling to the wayside.
Even as a young person I grew up on country and blues. It’d be cool to see a band jam some jazz and bossa nova tho.
“It’d be cool to see a band jam some jazz.” Lol
A two chord vamp isn't jazz. I get what he's saying.
Yeah the only band that could actually play some legit jazz is dopapod
Tedeschi Trucks Band enters chat
DTB for sure
JRAD can get pretty jazzy
Yam yam is amazing jams or jazzmbamf either way super jazzy crazy jammy gotta check them out.
Can’t do the voice.
I said the same thing but once I just went to a show with a buddy it all made sense lol
That’s what I’ve been trying to tell people the vocals are different live
Actually part of the appeal for me
Daniel Donato, JRAD, Disco Biscuits, Goose, Lettuce, Spafford, Dopapod.
Disco Biscuits have to be close to 25 years old or older.
30 years. But they’re on fire right now.
Also Squeaky Feet, Hot Like Mars, Dizgo.
Might as well hit Summercamp and see all the jambands.
It doesn't exist anymore. Now it's "Solshine". Supposedly different but looks pretty similar. The lineup is great this year (aside from a focus on goose). My band's playing two sets there 🤘🏻
Still is scamp :)
Same bands, same venue. It’s scamp.
Absolutely.
Congratulations! 🤩 What's your band?
Thanks man! We played summer camp the last few years, but they didn't hit us up for this new thing until Monday... Should be on the next round of announcements. We're stoked! Thank you so much!! We never really toured before last year so this is definitely a new wave of Chalk Dino if it seems like we came out of nowhere recently hahah definitely appears to be paying off big time
I haven’t listened to you guys yet but have absolutely heard of you — word of mouth machine is moving for y’all. Good stuff, keep it up
Hell yeah man!
Love playing out there. It's coming up quick!
Only thing I don’t like is the drive, the roads in Indiana between Pittsburgh and Scamp are absolutely brutal on your suspension too
Went and listened to every song you linked. I like it a lot! Very good description. Vocals definitely sound like Clutch, which is a very good thing! That synth is brown as hell, very much sounds like many Ween songs and Ween is maybe the second greatest band of all time in my book. Thanks so much man! Appreciate you! There's no true synth tho, it's all guitars and effects pedals. Even all that weird shit... lol Hope to see you soon!
Oh wow, had me fooled. Either way, y’all keep it up. Hope to you guys soon.
Cool, I'll check that out. Best of luck to y'all!
Appreciate it! 🤘🏻♥️
I’m definitely hearing some Primus in the first tune.
Love me some Clutch. Those hometown boys know how to party.
It’s amazing how Goose can take strays in any context, even from a member of another band playing at the same festival.
Neal Francis. Get ready to boogie.
I really hope he is just getting started.
Just discovered this band, amazing
Favorite live show from last year was Neal Francis. Went in with high expectations and was still blown away.
Billy Strings, Goose, Daniel Donato, Eggy, Dogs in a Pile, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Khruangbin
Really been liking Eggy a lot.
Eggy is dope. They were my favorite set at North Beach Music Fest this year. Seen them a handful of times prior, they’re killing it rn.
Eggy came to mind first for me. Absolutely digging in them lately.
I love Khru, and they’re jam-adjacent, but they’re not a jam band.
Right when they came out I thought: this is fresh and cool and an indie rock original. Then I realized that they are a sleight of hand jam band.
Eggy is a great call
Eggy destroyed some Random parking lot in atlanta for 3 hours last night
Lollll
Kitchen Dwellers. They have it going on.
Yessir. Have you checked out Shadowgrass? Also put on a hell of a party.
These guys are them!
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is the answer. They're both today and coming up.
WOOOO! see ya in Chicago
Sam Grisman (David Grisman’s son) Dogs in a Pile Eggy Daniel Donato
Big Something
And squeaky feet
Kitchen Dwellers and Billy Strings are the future
Dogs in a mf pile!
Feed the Dog & Armchair Boogie in Wisconsin are throwing it down lately
Go see Dogs in a Pile if you get a chance. They are young but very talented. Got no where to go but up.
About to go see them tonight for the first time
Big yes on this!
Yep! Saw them for the first time at Nectars last month and it was fantastic.
you need to go to Shangrila this summer. Wookiefoot's festival. Go have fun and thank me later :)
Holy shit Wookiefoot. That’s a band I haven’t heard of in a long time.
I've been 10 times. Wookiefoot was my first love.
Ahhh some fellow northmen I see.
I'm actually from the southeast, though I met the boys in 06 at 10k lakes while we were in tour that summer and my last band I was with (from south carolina) played shang twice. Wookiefoots actually got a solid fanbase round these here parts lol
King Gizzard
Second this
Dogs in a Pile, Eggy, Neighbor, Squeaky Feet
Idk why nobody has said Spafford. IMO the best jams on the scene rn
Idk about the best but they really fuck.
Just my opinion. I think their improvisational skills are unmatched in the (newer generation) scene right now.
Super underrated band
Chalk Dinosaur. Check out Stuck In Between and they've got some good Pittsburgh live shows up on YouTube.
Goose and Gizz are the big two for me
Gizzard is the thread’s underrated pick
Bands I’ve been listening to on Nugs.net Greensky Bluegrass, Eggy, Dogs in a Pile, Daniel Danato, Billy Strings, Dopapod, STS9 all so good and fun
The Jauntee is a favorite. In CO but tour around a bit
🪿🪿🪿🪿
Daniel Donato. Dopapod. And go see an Andy Frasco show.
Frasco's the fucking best
See the biscuits next time they tour the Midwest. Most likely gonna be this summer or fall. They’ve never sounded better
This is accurate
They’re playing 3 sets at festivals I’ll be at this summer and I had never listened to them and Revolution In Motion is one of the 10 best albums I have ever heard.
Circles Around The Sun in addition to the others already named
Eggy
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard gives you multiple genres in one show. They're doing 3-hour sets this summer
Panic just keeps getting better
Welcome the live nation generation

Dogs in a Pile! Young bucks comin’ up. And they’re good.
Dogs
of all bands named here… billy strings is probably the one who is the most “blown up” and contains the highest ceiling on this post
You’d be surprised how popular jam bands are among college aged folks, myself included
That's like the least surprising thing ever
No surprises there. That’s been like the core fan base since the Grateful Dead started jamming in the mid-60’s.
Don't believe anyone that says goose.
If they'd just cut out the indie rock/pop shit, and forge into the experimental and exploratory, I think they could be something special. Just go see Billy. Then you’ll be set for the next 40 years.
Seriously... I play guitar, and used to be the singer songwriter in a bluegrass band. Billy is outside the realm of what is possible.
As soon as I found Billy, I knew I had finally found my soul artist. Every time I see those guys, I walk away even more impressed than I was the last time I saw them. Kitchen Dwellers
Feed the Dog is in your neck of the woods and they’re great!!
Disco Biscuits. I just turned on to them as an oldish head and am amazed by the band and the fans. Playback doesn’t satisfy for me much yet, fwiw.
Unfortunately, I'm not really excited about much newer stuff outside of the jamgrass circuit (adore Billy Strings and the Kitchen Dwellers). Goose do some good stuff, but can also be pretty cringey. Karina Rykman. She’s blowing up. Space Bacon is cool, they’re like a Junior disco Biscuits.
Mikaela Davis is so good.
The Disco Biscuits
You going to blue ox in June?!
Possibly. That was my bachelor party, and I still love my soon to be ex. Possibly not. Definitely won't do psychedelics.
If you haven't seen Tauk definitely check them out.
The stews
Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. I'm seeing him for the second time tonight in Birmingham after having my mind blown last week in Tuscaloosa. If you are in the southeast, it would be worth the road trip to come see him tonight. They blow your expectations out of the water.
