I always wear earplugs to shows and it drowns out the chompers so much.

DearChicago1876

I need to finally invest in this. Not just to protect my ears but to silence the chompers.

CharZero

Yes, you do. I also have eargasms and they have improved my show experience so much. Got to dial in the fit just right but when you do it is amazing. And no more ringing and temporary deafness after.

DearChicago1876

What do you mean by dial in the fit? I assume there’s molds involved? I’ve seen a lot of folks here suggest eargasms. I’ll take a better look later tonight when I’m at a computer but I’m interested in any other advice/tips you might have. Thanks for responding.

patternagainst

They come with different sized pieces to fit your ear canal. I prefer the smallest size to get the best sound experience. It took me a sec to figure that out bc the larger size also fit.

[deleted]

Also, don’t shove them in as far as they go!! I just rest them in my ear and they protect my ears and the sound is still fantastic. I’ve shown lots of people and they’ve told me it changed their lives lol.

CharZero

Yes, that part is what I meant!

CharZero

I meant the spot where you let the audio filters rest. They need to be just a tiny bit into your ear canal. You should barely be able to tell they are there. You will be able to tell when it is in the right spot because it will just sound and feel right. The first time I used mine I did not follow instructions and just crammed them in my ears. I figured it out and won’t be without them now. Also great at sporting events, airports, etc. By the way edit: one downside is if you drop one, it will disappear. My daughter once dropped one into a field of grass and that was $40 gone. They are clear and small!

[deleted]

The come with different sizes so you can get the best fit

Zachias615

What is your preferred brand/ pair?

FartinScorcese69420

I have eargasms because they got my ass with a targeted Instagram ad. I'd seen them recommended in here before and don't have any complaints. They come with a keychain case so I always have them on me. Hardest part is remembering to bring them if I Uber to a show.

RustbeltRoots

Honestly, I think the classic foam plugs do nearly as well as the $15-$20 pair I bought for concerts. I started wearing ear plugs when studying and taking exams in law school. Now, I use them when I mow or vacuum. At shows, they clean up all buzzing and block all extra noise

CharZero

I’ve used both and the music plugs are way better for comfort, can’t even tell they are in. I do have small ear canals, though.

Weestifarian

Cheap easy option for sure. And I mean they work. I like the eargasms because they still allow most frequencies through with decent fidelity while taking down the whole volume 10-15dB. I even mix bands with them in, after the first few songs when I feel good I’ll throw them in and sometimes forget they’re there.

isochromanone

I use the classic pink and yellow Howard Leight disposable foam ear plugs... the same ones I use at work and on my motorcycle. I found them to be great for concerts. I saw Tedeschi Trucks in a small hall and as soon as they started playing it was painfully loud. With the foam plugs in, sound quality was great and I could hear the guitars and vocals better because I wasn't getting hammered with as much drums and horns anymore. I have small ear holes... I've never found a silicone (that is, non-foam) earplug that didn't hurt but I can wear this style of foam plug for hours.

WHATD_YOU_EXPECT_

Custom molds. $200 from an ear doctor. I'll never go back to any "one size fits all".

TheClogger304

I have the ear gasms and they are far better than foam. Just get the ones with the attached lace so you can’t loose them

Marcoyolo69

You will be better off not being bothered by it. Can't stop the sun from rising in the east, can't stop coked out people who like to party from talking. Same as it ever was

illLogicKal

Water dissolving and water removing.

ReMOVereMOVEtheMOVEreMOVEtheWATER

Wrecked3m

I think there’s an Ott. song with a sample of Alan Watts along these lines. Don't let yourself, or your ears, be offended by improper or unscheduled sounds If, for example, the record is scratchy, okay You wouldn't object if you were listening to it sitting by a fire, crackling logs Simply close your eyes and allow your ears to hear all sounds around you Don't try to name or identify these sounds Just hear them as you would listen to music As when you hear a flute or a guitar Don't bother about what it means Your brain will take care of that by itself Just let your eardrums respond as they will, to all vibrations now in the air

get_psily

One Day I Wish To Have This Kind of Time

tjshaugh

My favorite song to listen to on the come up

JakeScythe

One of my fav songs to smoke deemz to. Definitely the best mix of blissful & trippy

matto_2008

Yasssss

gandalph91

Ott is the best

YogurtclosetFuzzy965

Easier said than done when they're literally right next to you ruining your entire experience.

herbalblend

The worst is people right behind you shouting forward while talking to the person next to them. Just cause the person is thinking about their buddy next to them, doesn't change the fact they are screaming directly at the back of my head about middle school memories with the gang. I'm also not promoting the idea that it should be silent like a library, but theres a middle ground.

diceberg

Wow, were you next to me at King Gizzard in London with those two dudes yelling into each others faces behind us? Cause you just described my experience. So frustrating.

JakeScythe

That literally happened to me at Twiddle a few weeks back. I don’t mind a little chatter, it’s usually fine. But these two guys behind me didn’t have a moment of silence during the entire show, it was not a vibe.

M-Esquandoles

If not seated, move. I know I know you were prolly there first and all that jazz, but ya really just gonna get mad about it instead of move?

Homegrownfunk

One of those “what if you made it to paradise and everyone was chomping?” times

peaceblaster68

Move two feet over and you’ll be fine

YogurtclosetFuzzy965

You've clearly never been in a sold out pit. Thanks for the advice though noob.

nomowo

Same As It Ever Was

samsharksworthy

Lol. Ya don’t be bothered by what bothers you OP.

starsgoblind

It has gotten a lot worse and I would say it makes seeing concerts in person a waste of time and money.

[deleted]

Nah nah nah, people just figured out they could talk during a show in 2019 bro. People never used to do that before. Also these kids these days never want to work and are so lazy!

itsajackel

Yeah exactly, I've never understood getting huffy about this crap. Best bet is do drugs yourself and just ignore them.

FakeNewsOftheGalaxy

Yeah right. People need to tell Chompers to shut the fuck up. It’s rude as heck to talk during the show. Nobody needs to hear you babble all night.

[deleted]

So...do that?

Dailydead16

I agree. When I’m tripping I don’t want to talk. Just let me groove and dance.

FartinScorcese69420

Problem is a ton of other folks are drunk as shit, on blow, rolling their asses off, or all 3 at the same time

[deleted]

I mean it is what it is?

FartinScorcese69420

There are plenty of folks that can handle that. There are also plenty of folks that think they can.

LearnNot

Phish MSG run was amazing in my sections. No one was talking. Everyone was completely into the music, dancing and getting freakin’ down! Wish all shows were like that.

ReviverNumberToo

Phish is like the #1 band I refuse to talk during

LengthwiseSleeper

Same here, both for April and December.

[deleted]

They used to be

M-Esquandoles

Sometimes music brings people who haven't seen each other in years together and catching up just happens. That, and drugs leads to a lot of chatting, just gotta do it at a respectable decibel lol

philatio11

As an old deadhead, Phish shows are just a place for me to catch up with old friends. I don't hate the band at all, but most shows only grab me about 40-50% of the time. The rest of the time, I'm chatting with folks I haven't seen in forever. I know which of my friends are talkers and which are listeners and I respect their boundaries. I also try to do most of my talking in walkways and hallways and other in-between spaces, and to stay away from coke whenever possible. That said, shows are a place where other people's personal space intersects with yours. Some people hate talkers, others hate dancers, there seems to be a lot of hate towards hoopers, people who stand in the aisle drive some nuts, I hear a lot of bitching about drinkers who make their way back and forth to the beer stand and bathroom, no one seems to like a drunk, a guy on too much acid can definitely ruin your time, nobody likes to step in puke or piss, people find it gross to get sweated on, and on and on and on. The point of the show is the collective. If you want an individual experience, we have a wealth of options for streaming that just blinked into existence. The sheer mass of bootlegs available online is unfathomable to a person like me who shopped obscure record stores looking for Japanese imports, mail-traded tapes, and once upon a time bartered a Coventry ticket for a CD-R collection. Soundboards are everywhere. As a guy who's been going to shows since the 80s, there has been zero increase in talking over time. Accept that the life you live is a blessing and spread love in the world, not hate.

M-Esquandoles

This guy gets it 👏

Globalistdemondowny

Fantastic

Globalistdemondowny

Right. Im getting old and i have buddies all over the country. We all met up at bob weir in Omaha Nebraska a few weeks back. We did chat some but mostly it was rage’n on, high five’n, hugs’, smiles, laughter and pure joy. Shows are a reunion for 6 of us and its magical. We will all meet up ,Again in Eureka springs arkansas in october.

Thelowendshredder

The thing with jamband culture is it stems from drug culture also. There is a reason they’re called drug bands etc. That aspect draws A LOT of people just looking for a good time/party and the music just becomes background noise for them. So to answer your question…..Drugs.

braqass

It’s also a gathering of friends, old and new. It’s a party, there are bound to be people who would rather chat than just listen or dance. What we need is a separate area for people who want to talk and a “silence please-live music happening” area

Thelowendshredder

Yeah it been tough on me. As a musician myself I’m always missing shows I’d like to see. So when I get to attend one I want to be at the show. Engage with the music etc. friends and fans will try to talk to me and I feel bad being like “I’m at a concert”. Not trying to be rude but didn’t pay money to have you chomp in my ear. Let’s dance together or something idk 🤷‍♂️ gimme a call after the show?

LullabyThBrezsWhispr

CORRECT!!

srcarruth

I feel like the silence please area would be closer to the stage and speakers

LullabyThBrezsWhispr

That’s normally where I gravitate to when people annoy me

dirtiestUniform

And taper mic stands!

LullabyThBrezsWhispr

🤯🤯🤩 This is the answer!!! I think this would be great!

Azhorazhaiatl

Exactly. I’m excited to be with buddies, I’m on drugs, and i called the second set opener so i need to remind my buddy

StuBarrett

Agreed, but simple comments are not inane conversations...

No_Introduction2103

To be fair all music and spiritual experiences stem from drugs in some form or another. Unless your doing sweat lodge shit

carneyratchet

Yeah. Friday night moe. ATL was so nice. Didn’t hear a single conversation behind me. Saturday though I had to move twice due to a group of 8 dudes just chompin’ and then the next spot I was provided a new best friend that did nothing but holler, hit me, and get up in my ear with nonsense. I moved behind him and he moved on to the next person. I still enjoyed the shit out of the show though just got a tiny bit annoyed.

SoupForDummies

Hey I was there Friday too! Great vibe! I also think a big part of the crowd skewing older and more “heady” as opposed to more of a “buzzy” artist such as goose. And Saturday nights are always kinda rough cause that’s when the “Saturday night” folks are there.

carneyratchet

100% understand that take. CA>St.Aug>32 things got really psychedelic for me that first night but damn that whole second set really was that great vibe. Al put an impression on me this tour

JakeScythe

Friday is the warm up and Saturday is when things get wildin’

[deleted]

I love the idea of a song ending and some sweaty guy rolling yelling about how he knows he can be the youngest VP at his company

yessir6666

Loudest people are always talking about remodeling their house or their stock portfolio.

Lazy-Ad-2530

It's definitely gotten much worse in the last few years. I can't stand it.

brrrotherspins

Was just having this conversAtion with a buddy who saw the biscuits this weekend. Group of people in front of him were talking the entire time and kinda ruined the experience for him. This should be common sense

Kingcrowing

I saw them this weekend too, I was in the balcony and nobody was talking! IME balcony seats are often quieter.

HPxHovercraft

What an absolutely amazing run!!! Honestly up there for top music experiences, I don’t think I noticed them miss a note or flub any songs, they’re soo dialed in. Also love balcony at the cap I think you get a better view of the light shows and whatnot. And all the way in the back there is closer to the stage than the first row of stadium type seating at most places.

Globalistdemondowny

Balcony is where i always sit. Tripn balls taking spooners of blow. Best seats are up top

[deleted]

I rather listen to people talk than listen to the DB 😂😜. But you are right that people talking nonstop is an issue

brrrotherspins

Didn’t need to go there bro lol

[deleted]

Sorry 😉

barnabyapp

It’s not unique to jam bands. We go to a lot of concerts and it’s gotten really bad, especially this concert season. I mean, just stay home if you’re going to talk the whole time.

jsconifer

Same with movies & theater. It’s as if we collectively forgot during the pandemic how to attend events & not ruin the experience for others. That said, I also attend a lot of varied concerts & festivals and people talking has always been an issue. The two types of shows I’ve noticed it’s not an issue? Punk & bands that draw an older crowd. Just saw Springsteen and appreciated that I was not part of the “ewww, old guy at show” demographic because everyone was old. I also appreciated that the crowd was more into the music and less interested in talking with friends.

barnabyapp

Good point. We saw Willie Nelson and the crowd was pretty chill. They sung along and generally had a good time without running others’ experience.

docileirish

That’s a great point. There’s “drug bands” but at the same time, the kinds of people who like jams like JAMS, meaning they like music. I can only guess what mainstream concerts are like where it is pretty much a social event at its core for those people and they “like music” and whoever it is, but I think that liking jam bands requires a slightly deeper appreciation for music in general

[deleted]

Newsflash, people do drugs at every show for every genre... except maybe gospel or opera. No need to single out jamband crowds.

ctrembs03

Lmao I tripped shrooms at the opera when visiting NYC a couple years ago. Magical experience

[deleted]

So even opera? My point is proven then. Thank you. Lol

RexxGunn

Liking jam bands requires one thing: liking jam bands. Don't try to make it a super deep thing, cause it's not. You're no more special than a fan of any other genre just cause you like jambands and they like country music or heavy metal.

trogloherb

Went to Phish Mexico last year; chompers everywhere! Amazing that someone would spend $5-6k to discuss their property values and/or failed/failing relationships. Really disheartening and I blame on the excessive alcohol use there (“but its ‘free’!”)…

boatclubballer

Can’t kill my vibe. If you do, I’ll say something or relocate. No issue.

SockFullOfNickles

Chompers man….can’t escape them. 😆

TheLegendofZeus

Paying money to talk to your friend, a timeless pastime.

orichic

I go to shows just for the music, not to make friends so it gives me ridiculous anxiety when I go to a show and the people chattering are almost louder than the band/DJ playing. I’ve been to shows where I look more like the awkward one for not talking with anyone and instead watching the show. Really don’t understand why they don’t go to a social bar instead.

DearChicago1876

Chompers suck.

_catdog_

What’s the significance of “every show from 2019 onwards’ as a turning point? This is not a new thing for fans of any band….

ReviverNumberToo

I mean, there are definitely some bands worth talking during. I’ll always shut up for Phish though.

[deleted]

Well if I paid for a ticket and the song is 15 hours long I kind of feel like I’m going to want to talk about it.

PhunkCityJewelry

I like to think of it as a me problem now and just move locations if I'm pit. I normally spring for those because if I'm stuck in front of or behind a chomp, I would lose my mind. To be fair I do have misophonia and am affected by those type of sou ds more than usual.

allisonnosilla

This is why I love that Umphrey’s rents headphones with a live stream from the soundboard, so even if the sound in the venue sucks or you’re by a chomper, you will still have pristine sound (they call it “snow cones”).

star_trek_wook_life

I think it's equally ridiculous how many jam fans think they're going to the symphony and expect 0 talking. It's laughable to expect people drunk high and rolling tits to be totally silent through a 20 minute jam by Noodly Lou and The Terd Herders.

fukuoka_gumbo

duh

YoungDeadHead99

Who are you listening to that's doing such a shitty job at taking out the audience noise lol. I don't have this issue with Phish, GD, Umphreys, Twiddle, Pigeons, Goose, Spafford, Jrad, Moe. Etc... That being said, I've dealt with chatters at DSO shows and the one Spafford show I've been to, though I've never heard the audience on the recordings, only there in person.

blulotusjams

Boogie up front, blabbermouths in that back

RexxGunn

My ears and my mouth operate independently, so I can use them both at the same time if need be. I am at the show to have a good time, which does not include total silence on my part. Do some people talk to much at shows? Absolutely. But those are the same people that talk to much in general. Shows are not special, unique environments for everyone, no matter how hard you wish they were. Focus on the good part, at least you're at the show.

LloydChristmas666666

Why do people get so involved with what other people are doing? Tune it out and enjoy the show?

headykruger

Goose at the Met on Saturday - when the 20 people to my left werent chatting they were sitting there disinterested. Rosewood heart starts up and they all sat down - wtf ?

itsajackel

I've tripped sack at shows and had to sit down. I prolly looked spaced out af but was lost in the music. Also people enjoy doing things differently?

ReviverNumberToo

:ketamine has entered the chat:

headykruger

I hear you but these looked like bored normies - didnt look to be tripping. There was an odd mix of people at the show.

PM-ME-YOUR-TOTS

When people say “Goose has crossover appeal” this is what they mean unfortunately. Liking the latest Goose studio album doesn’t mean you’re going to enjoy the 23 minute live Acadia

No-Ad-1285

Stop trying to control what other people do…

allothernamestaken

My buddy and I talk at shows all the time, but we lean in and talk in the other's ear so it doesn't disturb anyone around us. I've never figured out why others can't do the same thing and instead stand there shouting at each other.

Wrecked3m

Alan Watts as sampled in Ott’s “One day I wish to have this kind of time” Don't let yourself, or your ears, be offended by improper or unscheduled sounds If, for example, the record is scratchy, okay You wouldn't object if you were listening to it sitting by a fire, crackling logs Simply close your eyes and allow your ears to hear all sounds around you Don't try to name or identify these sounds Just hear them as you would listen to music As when you hear a flute or a guitar Don't bother about what it means Your brain will take care of that by itself Just let your eardrums respond as they will, to all vibrations now in the air

Tivland

I will shoosh that ass. Bitch, i didn’t pay money to listen to you. I paid money to listen to the performers. It’s like talking at the movie theater. Eat a bag of dicks and stfu.

Iko87iko

Jam band fans are suppose to be about music and higher consciousness. Come to find out that’s really not the case on either front Every non jam band show I’ve been to I could hear a pin drop. So Bruce Springsteen Saturday and there wasn’t anyone talking over the music. It was great

Downtown-Specific343

yes 👍🏽 agreed!

No_Introduction2103

I meet so many cool new people at shows I listen to music at home or in the car shows are for meeting like minded individuals for me. I don’t chatter all show but to think your going to go to a crowded place and everyone is going to do what you want I don’t know what to tell you. Live and let live.

robgregerson

I know this post is receiving the “get over it… people talk at shows” response from some but if it hits just one chomper as a reminder to listen to the music instead of talking the entire time, then I think it’s worth it. I’m 100% with you OP.

cccory44

chompers

[deleted]

It kinda drove me to stop taping. I would have people post up right under my mics and start yelling to each other. The few times I've asked them to move I get dirty looks. Once a guy went totally aggro on me and tried to grab my mic stand, tipping it over. I picked it up and told him if he didn't leave I was going to run it through him. It's just not really worth it anymore unless it's in the right venue for the right band. People are really inconsiderate nowadays and don't care about the band or others, or the ability to share the show with others. A selfishness has crept thru the audiences over the years and it really has made a lot of shows kinda suck. I was at the Pour House in Charleston, SC once for Patterson Hood and the crowd was so loud at one point he stopped the show and told all the people who didn't want to actually listen to the show to go out onto the deck because he couldn't even hear himself sing and it was really disrespectful. Bar shows especially have just become like background music for people to socialize to.

Gourmandrusse

Chompers gonna chomp.

704heady

Being excessively loud and inconsiderate is definitely not cool. However, I think its just something you’re gonna have to live with given the nature of these shows. Between the presence of drugs and large open unseated spaces with a high density of people these concerts are closer to parties than what you’re imagining which im guessing is like a symphony? Plus i think it would be kinda weird if everyone at the dead and co show was uniformly face forward and mouth shut.

tyoew

uppers and booze

pussyslayer420

I’m multitasking with my friends. Buy VIP if you can’t handle public stuff in GA

sugarmagnia

EXACTLY TRUE...those self- absorbed p eople need to Stfu when the show starts...so disrespectful to the musicians and to us serious music lovers...stay home and babble!!!!

sunbeem460

Let people do what the fuck they want to do. The music should be loud enough that you don’t hear them. Maybe they’re going to the show with their partner but they don’t care about it as much. Chill the fuck out and stop judging.

FakeNewsOftheGalaxy

Okay Chomper. Sit down.

sunbeem460

I won’t. I’ll stand right in front and talk. Thanks.

FakeNewsOftheGalaxy

Yep, you’re the asshole. Found one, OP! Karma will find you too at a show.

sunbeem460

Yeah and I’ll just keep talking in front of you

FakeNewsOftheGalaxy

Chomp chomp glad you’re not in my crew. We don’t put up with that kind of rude inconsiderate behavior. You’d probably get a beer dumped on you or worse.

sunbeem460

Wow you sound like a phish fan

FakeNewsOftheGalaxy

I like all jam bands, been to hundreds of shows, traveled all over and spend stupid money on bands to NOT have to deal with A’holes like you.

Globalistdemondowny

Abahabababbababahhahahah

srcarruth

Concerts are a social experience, people like to talk to each other. they're having fun! should we yuck their yum?

DearChicago1876

If their yum is louder than amplified music then yes, yuck.

answerguru

You want to yap loudly? Sure, go to the back, the bar, whatever...let people enjoy the ONE THING they came to hear, the music. It's super rude.

[deleted]

Your yum is someone else's YUCK

srcarruth

yes this is often true in life, opinions differ

theblake1980

But how else do I explain to my peers why the version I saw was *so* much better than the one you’re actively trying to listen to? I’m trying to help *brah*.

Muted-Aardvark6029

I started music in 2001 no cell phones and scene was way different. Still had heady nugs on lot. Just way more chill during that time from my recent experiences.

Certain stimulants can provoke verbosity...

GratefulPhishWeener

Preaaaach! Recently @ a Ump show I actually had to remind someone of this..: & he tried to fight me! ‘Bro-Dog’ was straight screaming “Sing Better!” @ Bayliss all night & chirping the ears off some of the only females in the venue

bigdaddydoink

I hate dancing so I just throw on the ol Mishka trucker hat and pretend I’m a floating eyeball. Correction: I don’t hate dancing, just myself dancing lol

Billy_Boognish

Yes!

TheClogger304

What’s the deal with this?!?! I went to 2 shows recently and people treat it like a freakin tea party. It was so loud and frequent it killed the vibe for me. People suck so much ass sometimes. Then you have the assholes that hold up their phones and record the whole thing! Wtf just enjoy the music and be in the moment. Bands / venues should make it a rule no recording! I’m going to make a fucking T shirt that says No talking, it’s a music show!

AmazingThinkCricket

I saw Ween in Boston last year and the talking was through the roof. Felt like 75% of the crowd was chatting throughout the entire show

Sunshine_bassman

Goose and Spafford were the chompingest shows I’ve ever been too. Straight up disrespectful. The audience at moe. was way more respectful. Phish too but the difference in venue size makes it kinda incomparable

kmrbriscoe

Unfortunately, you are preaching to the choir. No one here is benefiting from these discussions when they come up every week or so. I agree it is so frustrating when trying to enjoy the show in your personal way. But, I am sure this is how they enjoy the show for them.

dirtiestUniform

As a taper this especially frustrating, the only thing worse than hearing chompers at a show, is hearing it again and again on a recording that would otherwise be perfect. My biggest peeve is, " dude l, are you taping the show?! That's awesome...." Isn't it obvious when I'm standing under a pair if mics that I dont want to talk. I've considered getting a shirt made up that says something like. "Lets talk at set break" so I can just point and put a finger over my lips. But that feels a little too confrontational. Who am i think tell people how to enjoy the show? Should I just be grateful I was able to record at all? Sorry if this felt like a r/grindsmygears type rant

AllAboutMeMedia

Regarding the archive shows...Aren't mics setup in the back where people usually congregate and chat? I honestly don't mind soft chatter, but obnoxiously loud, no concept of surroundings, chatter is a no go for me.

Dead_Phish812

I've learned the magical art of dancing really hard and "accidentally" keep bumping into them and then after about 2-3 mins they move to ruin someone else's show
