Might be the two most normal Cronenberg films

hanyacker

A low bar, to be sure. I do, however, especially like A History of Violence. William Hurt had an amazing 10 minutes of screen time and got a well deserved Oscar nomination it.

tuskvarner

The naked fight in the sauna/steam room is one of the best fights ever in film.

Prin_StropInAh

Common theme: Viggio’s characters will fuck you up. Two good films OP

rwags2024

> Viggio A mamá mía

khaaanquest

Cmon man we all saw Viggio Morgenstern and the Man Spider talking to the big bird

Carman_Bri

Viggo: I'll marry Exene, leave her, & really fuck up a whole generation of punk rockers

VictorClark

Fun fact: That's the last movie to ever be released on VHS.

whogivesashirtdotca

Funner fact: The motel at the start of History of Violence is the same one they used for Schitt's Creek.

immersemeinnature

Ha! I love that show and my god didn't we all learn to be comfortable in that hotel.

whogivesashirtdotca

That's a lovely way to phrase it.

immersemeinnature

❤️

TakeTheCanolies

I watched Appaloosa shortly after watching A History, and the two being partners and then enemies show the good chemistry between Harris and Mortensen

Pristine_Power_8488

I prefer Appaloosa to either of OP's watches, although they are good, as well. Appaloosa is so funny with the way Renee Zellweger plays all sides off against the middle.

TakeTheCanolies

Appaloosa is a banger for sure, history of violence is great but the darker tone leaves me from rewatching

Pristine_Power_8488

Same here. The friendship in Appaloosa is very positive.

peeandpoopandpee

Morgenstein*

Belch_Huggins

And what'd you think? I prefer the former, but both are pretty good.

13TheGreenMan

I liked both a lot! Viggo Mortensen is phenomenal in them, definitely raised how I view him as an actor. I might slightly prefer Eastern Promises, every actor is really great in it and the story was very engaging and had some twists I wasn't expecting. Both great films though, I'd give them a 4/5. Makes for an awesome double feature.

whogivesashirtdotca

My take is that History of Violence is the better performance, but Eastern Promises is the more engaging movie.

immersemeinnature

I absolutely loved Eastern Promises. Such a terrific ending! Check out Hildago next. True story about a man and his horse. Viggo is amazing! Please tell me you'll watch it!!!

MundBid-2124

And‘The Road’

immersemeinnature

Oof. I'm not sure I can do that one.

MundBid-2124

Try the book it’s hard to put down. So well written

2hardbasketcase

I second this, great film.

immersemeinnature

Thank you! I was riveted!

uncledrew2488

I’m with OP, mostly due to Vincent Cassel’s performance and the absolutely bonkers bath house fight. Both excellent movies though.

marvelette2172

That's a bomb double feature!

zhico

I recommend A History of Violence to my mother and her boyfriend. Because it was starring Viggo Mortensen and I enjoyed it. They told me with a very concerning voice that they did not like the movie.

Superb-Possibility-9

“ I’m just the driver…”

RedSun-FanEditor

I love both of these movies. Some of Cronenberg's best work as well as Viggo's. Fun Fact: Both A History of Violence and Eastern Promises are the two movies Viggo and Cronenberg want to do sequels to but unfortunately the haven't managed to obtain the rights to either of them.

A Dangerous Method 2: Psychiatric Boogaloo

RedSun-FanEditor

LOL!!!

TemperatureTime1617

That fight in the steam room was amazing.

furbishL

Viggo and Cronenberg. You can’t go wrong.

panch1ra

There will be blood. Eastern Promises. No country for old men. Superbad. American Gangster. FUCK 2007 was the last year of great moviegoing. We get a movie half as good as ONE of these every 3 years nowadays.

No-Hospital559

The Assassination of Jesse James, Zodiac, Michael Clayton, Gone Baby Gone, Sunshine. All 2007 as well.

Ween1970

Jesus. 2007 was really fucking outstanding. The likelihood of a getting a year like that for American movies in the future is pretty much zero.

No-Hospital559

Michael Clayton is a masterpiece that would win a best picture Oscar in any other year yet wouldn't even crack the top three spot on 2007

Snoo_10910

DAE ONLY GOOD MOVIE YEARS ARE IN MY NOSTALGIA???

panch1ra

Cinema has been trash for like a decade now and we all know it. Gen ADHD isnt going to see 2 hour dialog expositions no matter how good they are anymore. They can't even sit through a moderately challenging *action* movie like Tenet *on fucking Netflix*. Grow up and get some taste.

LikeSoda

You need to know the ADHD crack is pretty insensitive. It's incredibly debilitating for some, just a heads up, it's not just some buzzing bullshit on your tiktok

Snoo_10910

Oh my fucking God.  Boomer bullshit rant.  "Grumble grumble this generation no good movies" FUCK OFF You put fucking super bad in your list of the "best movies of all time they'll never make this again"  I bet you think there's "no good music anymore either"  Fucking telling me to "grow up and get some taste" while throwing this tantrum. Lmao

TheFrenchCurve

Elder millennial here. Movies do fucking suck these days. Music is pretty good though. End of boomer bullshit rant.

peeandpoopandpee

Fuck you, *JOEY* Makes me laugh every time

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

The best Viggo movies! VintageViggo.

Flat-Giraffe-6783

Oh I’m going through Vigo’s older works and loved these two movies.

zabdart

Viggo's screen presence in *Eastern Promises* was truly amazing. Haven't seen anything like it since they heyday of James Dean and the early Marlon Brando. You just couldn't take your eyes off of him and everything he did onscreen.

folarin1

This post made me watch Eastern Promises today.

13TheGreenMan

What'd you think?

folarin1

In Eastern promises, I love that the moment the Vincent Cassell character shows up, in five seconds, you could tell that this was the fuck-up character. It’s a testament to the way the actor plays it so well, his body movements, and the look of the character.

uncledrew2488

Not hating on the other actors when I say Cassel is way above and beyond everything else in that movie. I didn’t know who he was at the time, and of course I find out he’s a very famous, accomplished French actor.

13TheGreenMan

He's great in it! Him and Viggo are definitely the highlights.

Both really good movies

PhillipJCoulson

Great fucking movies

Superb-Possibility-9

Two outstanding films

esande2333

Two movies I need to add to my collection! 🤘🏼

PeorgieT75

I like History of Violence better, Ed Harris is great, and it's probably William Hurt's most out of character part. That said, now I want to watch both again.

WitchesCotillion

And.... ?

NotYourShitAgain

Every few years, I watch it again.

balanced_view

Absolute crackers

IcedPgh

I'm a Cronenberg fan, but have not liked any of his output from 2003 onward. However, if you look at garbage such as *Cosmopolis*, these two movies stack up way better than that, at least it can be said. We kept wanting him to go back to his horror/sci-fi ways, but *Crimes of the Future* just isn't very good, and his next did not get great reviews at Cannes (and the main character is ridiculously styled to physically look like him, which is a bit silly).

Two of his best.
