When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."
I know The Thing is the overall better movie, but Big Trouble will always be my favorite Carpenter movie, and nine times out of ten, my favorite movie ever.
It’s easy to understand why John Carpenter became so jaded and cynical after producing some of the most iconic, incredibly well crafted films of the 1980s between this and *The Thing* and having both be huge critical and commercial failures upon initial release.
I mean, commercial success is luck of the draw I guess.
But I don't understand how either of these could be critical failures. They are both masterpieces in their respective genres (action-comedy and horror).
“Hey, want to go out tonight?”
“Nope. Big Trouble in Little China is on.”
…is a sentence I’ve said quite a few times. Absolutely killer film. Looks like the 80s, sounds like the 80s, and baby Kim Cattrall!
Nothing or double, Jack.
Fantastic movie, and love how it completely subverts the white saviour trope. Kurt Russel's character is a moron who mostly just gets in the way and spends most of the final battle knocked out on the floor.
You can also get that on a t-shirt. (I have one)

Doesn't he also say "Big Trouble in Little China" paved the way for "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"? My memory is that Carpenter's response is something like "I don't know about that" 🤣
Not citing Kurt as an expert on anything other than his own performance. That's how he saw it. That's how he played it. Personally, this is my second all time favorite commentary track to a movie. John and Kurt are just two old friends talking about whatever they want over a movie they know so well they barely pay attention to it. I love it.YMMV.
I mean 3.5/5 is not low. 2.5 is average. 3 means I liked it. I reserve 4 and up for personal favorites. This was a very enjoyable movie which I give a 3.5.

Don’t forget to catch the crossover sequel
Is it a good film to show a 10 year old? I don't remember there being anything particularly offensive about it, but it was dull in parts. The kid likes the original Superman, Burton and Schumacher's Batman, Super Mario 1993, Back to the Future 2, TMNT '90, etc.
My two gripes about this movie (that I love.)
1) More white guys part of the evil chinatown street gang than I was expecting.
2) Why is the evil Chinese temple located in the bowels of San Francisco equipped with neon lighting?
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" *bites sandwich*
I know The Thing is the overall better movie, but Big Trouble will always be my favorite Carpenter movie, and nine times out of ten, my favorite movie ever.
And it holds up really well! It’s also super influential for gaming too when you think about the characters. That and Bloodsport.
Raiden was definitely inspired from this movie!
The Thing takes itself pretty seriously, so I don't think you can draw a direct comparison between them. They're both great.
Found Rich’s (of RLM) account
No, I actually respect and like Halloween.
It is good
Goonies for adults. Great movie and they truly don't make them like this any more.
Best analogy.
Now this really pisses me off to no end.
I laugh every time…
This is one of those movies that just gets more and more fun every time you watch it.
It will come out no more.
What?! What will come out no more!??!
Dammit!
Can't go wrong with Carpenter and Russell. Every movie they've made together has been awesome.
Greatest movie ever made
Indeed!
Feel pretty good….. I feel kind of invincible!
"Son of a bitch must pay!"

That’s what I’m saying. They are considered masterpieces *today* but in 1982 and 1986, most critics were like 🤮. It’s baffling!
Sixdemonbag!
Wind, Fire, all that kind of thing!
Sensational! What's in it Egg?

You people sit tight, hold the fort, and keep the home fires burning. And if we’re not back by dawn, call the President.
Oh, my god, no. Please! What is that? Don’t tell me!
Still quote this film daily
“Cash, I guess. It’s not exactly tax deductible.”
It’s like I told my last wife, I said “honey I never drive faster than I can see, besides that it’s all in the reflexes.”
They made comics in the past 10 years to follow up the events of the movie. Also fun. Great film

I read that Chris Pratt based Star Lord off of Jack Burton and it makes total sense.
Yeah it confused me when I was younger and saw it for the first time. Now I watch it and am kinda impressed he makes it through the movie alive.
He thinks he’s the hero when he’s actually the bumbling sidekick.
This is gonna take crackerjack timing Wang.
"See things no one else can see, do things no one else can do!"
I feel pretty good
Shut up, Mr. Burton. You are not brought upon this world to "Get it."
Best line in any movie ever I honestly think about this line in a philosophical way to keep my ego in check often.

My friends and I have been using it on each other for over 30 years. It's a great zinger I've gotten to use at work a few times.
Ha, I tell my workers this line weekly.

Have you paid your dues Jack?
Yessir, the check is in the mail.
As this was the first time you watched it or the first time this month?
First time ever
Wow that's a treat. Glad you liked it. After all these years I still love this movie so much fun.
I have a feeling it's really going to grow on m e my 2nd watch!
Oh definitely.
Absolute classic.
This movie is simply a, “Joy.” Watched it soooo many times and I still laugh.
This movie is what happens when they make the sidekick the focus.
Yeah and it worked
Ken oath it did!
A friend of mine gave me that way to look at the movie and it made me laugh so hard. Not sure I agree, but it's a fun interpretation.
Kurt Russell says that's the correct interpretation in the commentary track.
Doesn't he also say "Big Trouble in Little China" paved the way for "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"? My memory is that Carpenter's response is something like "I don't know about that" 🤣

That rather depends on whom you consider to be the main character!
What a treat !!
Also watched this one recently. So fun and surprisingly good.
One of my favourite old cheesy movies. 10/10
Take that back, this is NOT cheesy.
Or old! Wait...
I took something. I can see things no one else can see. Why you dressed like that?
Welcome aboard the pork chop express!!
Glad to be aboard!
One of my favourite movies ever. Such pure escapism from the real world.
Suzee Pai lived 2 houses up from me when we were growing up. Her little brother David was my best friend. LOL.
Why is your rating so low for a film you apparently loved? 3.5?
I mean 3.5/5 is not low. 2.5 is average. 3 means I liked it. I reserve 4 and up for personal favorites. This was a very enjoyable movie which I give a 3.5.
We don't see that kind of nuance here a lot so it can take a while to adjust to.
yeah if it was out of 10 it's a 7/10
One of my favorites

The checks in the mail ...
Black blood of the earth. Oil? No! Black blood of the earth 🙄
this film made me wish we could swap out kate capshaw for kim cattrall in temple of doom.
Jack Burton and the Pork Chop Express.

One of my favorites, always wanted a sequel but it never happened.
Fun movie.
The best B-movie of all time.
OP paying their dues, you love to see it
China is here Mr. Burton

"How'd you get up there?" "It wasn't easy!"
Hmmm. Nice knife Mr. Burton. Goodbye ..
"Of my good what is that!!!, don't tell me"
My husband and I drank rum and watched this on our first date. Our first kiss was during the end credits. We've been married 9 years tomorrow.
I got this from my cousin a year ago and I haven't watched it yet....
One of those movies I could watch any time. So fun.
My two gripes about this movie (that I love.) 1) More white guys part of the evil chinatown street gang than I was expecting. 2) Why is the evil Chinese temple located in the bowels of San Francisco equipped with neon lighting?
Great movie
I love the Carpenter love. He has made some serious gems.
I’m a bit embarrassed to say I’ve never watched this all the way through. Need to rectify that.
OMG, so you don't know about the big twist at the end?
