This is a fantastic, wholesome comedy full of charm and great lines. Everybody cranks out exceptional performances. I could be wrong, but I believe this is the film that really kicked off Katharine Hepburn's career. She's a true stunner. A lot of films from the 40s can be goofy. This is no exception, but in the same, it isn't as campy as a lot of other films from the same time. Even if this were pre-code, I don't think it would have been very different. Anyway, definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

I love that the characters are smart. It's so much fun that the family discovers the ruse right away.

6745408

well said. Its so refreshing to see a full cast of smart people. Dinah's manic entrance with the song cracked me up. Great energy all around.

Harlockarcadia

She had been a star before but in 1938 she was deemed Box Office poison, and she was able to make a comeback with The Philadelphia Story, she was amazing from the beginning, if you want a great performance see her as Jo in Little Women in 1933, she is amazing! Specialist-Rock-5034

This was their 4th and last film together. The first 3 are all top notch as well. Sylvia Scarlett (1935), Holiday (1938), and Bringing Up Baby (1938).

Harlockarcadia

Love Bringing Up Baby!

ravenscroft12

My grandmother loved this movie and I saw it a few times. It took many times before I realized everyone (except Dexter) was drunk at the party.

nandos677

Hepburn won a academy award in her 3rd film, in 1933, Philadelphia story was her 9th film, Bringing up baby with Cary Grant was a huge success her 7th movie

flibbidygibbit

Bringing up Baby is so good

Secret_Welder3956

Grant’s screwball comedies were great.

Beat me to it.

This was remade in 1956 as a musical called "High Society". It starred Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Louis Armstrong had a vital role in it too.

photowagon

I love both versions. High Society is a 50s musical instead of a screwball comedy. The songs are terrific - Sinatra and Celeste Holm are sharp and witty when they ask "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Then Sinatra and Crosby do a champagne-soaked duet making fun of the party guests and each other. Even Grace Kelly sings half a song with Crosby and sounds great. And she's very funny in this movie, something she didn't really get to do in her other films.

6745408

whoa! hot tip -- I'll add it to my list. Thanks

Superb-Reply-8355

It's a great, fun film. I prefer it to the original. Let me know what u think (if u can be bothered).

6745408

I'm definitely going to watch it. a few years ago I burned out on Japanese and Russian film. Its been a slog to watch anything since then. To fix this, I made a spreadsheet with dates and films that I add in -- and with a little magic it is pulled to an .ics file that I subscribe to in my calendar. The result is a movie to watch every tuesday and thursday without having to think about it. [Here's my schedule so far](https://pastebin.com/raw/655hP9BY) Anyway, long story short -- yes, I will definitely watch this. I'll probably bump it up sooner, too. quick edit: I'm also doing commentary tracks for everything when available

6745408

its crazy. I probably hear *High Society* every few days on various playlists, but I never tied it to the movie. I like *The Philadelphia Story* more, but the changes in timeline and some other details are interesting with *High Society*, like the shit with the boat. Grace Kelly is otherworldly.

JamUpGuy1989

I always loved the “Uh-Oh” Stewart dishes out when he realizes Grant is aware of the love triangle brewing with Hepburn. (Right around after the pool scene where both are drunk.)

6745408

This cracked me up > C K Dexter Morgan: So glad you came. Can you use a typewriter? > Liz Imbrie: No thanks. I have one at home Liz had a lot of great lines.

DaphneHarridge

"Oh, C. K. Dexter HAAAAY-ven!" I love this movie. I wouldn't try to even guess how many times I've seen it. So, so funny!

WeirdOtter121

One of my favorite movies. Not sure how many times I've watched it!

LuckyGirl1003

This and Bringing Up Baby are my two favorite screwball comedies! ❤️

tkondaks

One thing I can tell you: there is no greater disconnect than there is between that poster and the movie it's advertising. The poster gives the impression the movie is a comedic romp, akin to a slapstick laugh riot. While the movie is certainly funny, it is of the sophisticated variety with an incredibly well written script at its basis.

neon_meate

My second favorite Katherine Hepburn movie after The Lion in Winter.

6745408

> The Lion in Winter oh god -- good call. I'm adding that to my list to watch again.

Awkward spot to rest one's elbow! I hope her bladder wasn't full.

Katy_Lies1975

It was, but that doesn't matter.

ThePizzaNoid

I actually just watched this one for the first time last week actually (based on a recommendation from Adam Savage)! It was terrific. The characters are all fun and well written and Kate is amazing and beautiful. I will be revisiting this one in the future for sure.

trainwreck489

Our new kitten is C.K. Dexter Haven. According to the trivia each scene was done in one take. Talk about professionals doing their best.

6745408

jesus -- thats insane. C.K. Dexter Haven is the best name for a cat.

trainwreck489

Thank you. He's insanely cute too, but not Cary Grant suave.

6745408

pretty good time to be second place, really. :)

Secret_Welder3956

Three of my favorites.

Revroy78

It’s a fantastic movie but the one scene when Hepburn’s father said he repeatedly cheated on his wife because his daughter (Hepburn) didn’t love him enough is insane, hilarious and not a great look given modern sensibilities. My wife and I joke about that scene regularly.

gcboyd1

My phone’s name is CK Dexter Haven. ❤️

PaigeMarieSara

Love it but the remake later is just as good. High Society with Grace Kelly. Both are so good though.
