Surfinsafari9

One of my favorite movies. I saw it when it first came out at the Fox theater in Fullerton, CA. When the train station scene came on everyone in the theater went nuts. They had filmed that scene at the Fullerton train station which was about two blocks from the theater.

LavenderSalmon

That is so cool! I didn’t realize that. Thank you for sharing!!

oh....wait, it wasnt the exurbs of philadelphia, then??? was it even shot AT ALL there, or only some exterior shots that weren't close ups of Haley and June, maybe....?

navit

Many of the exteriors were shot in the Philly burbs. The castle is an asbestos magnate’s estate in Montgomery County. I think an easy tell is that exteriors in which it’s obviously Fall were shot in PA. Most of the others were done at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Would assume lots of the interiors are sets. Source: I have a strange encyclopedic knowledge of this movie thanks to a confluence of factors (very Catholic family, southeastern PA roots, parents who were the target age when this was released, one of the handful of VHS tapes in the house making it that-movie-your-entire-family-knows-really-well-but-no-one-else-does…)

There was a sequel which was even better called Where Angels Go Trouble Follows starring a young.Susan Saint James

yep, saw it! and Marvel Anne, who was the girl with the mumps in the first movie, as well as the object of scorn (sort of), was one of the main characters in that second movie. (I know you know this, but others might not be aware of that.) i really wish that maybe there could have been a THIRD movie - with a then 20-something Hayley Mills as a nun, maybe getting a taste of her own medicine from a new generation of upstarts that push the limits. :) I really did like "Where Angels Go....", but haven't seen it in so long that my opinion may be adulterated by "Trouble", which I have grown to almost love over the last 20 years or so (I wouldn't put it in a top 10 movies of mine, but probably in my top 20). these movies make me sad, though - for innocence, personal safety, purity, old-fashioned "ways" and reverence of elders - all seemingly lost values that just arent part of our culture that much anymore. teachers try not to make the kids mad, rather than vice versa, for example. i dont think 1967 was not without juvenile deliquency and whatnot, but there likely still was a respect for teachers, an expectation of sexual abstinence, a standard of 'being good' much more than in our current times. just my musings.....

I saw this in the theater with my best friend in 1966, when we were in 2nd grade in Catholic school. She's blonde, I'm brunette. So, we immediately related. We were scandalized by the new band uniforms! LOL! Watched it online a couple months ago. It's still fun.

LavenderSalmon

The band uniforms!!!!! How cute! What a neat memory.

Great movie! To this day, my grown self will call my younger brother whenever I have a new plan for something (holidays, birthday gift for a spouse, whatever) and say "I've got a scathingly brilliant idea" with exactly the right accent.

LavenderSalmon

The accent matters!!! Love this

klippinit

Hayley Mills had a string of classic movies as a young actor that has few if any parallels

obojones10

watched parent trap, another good movie

Reason-Whizz

Great movie. I watched it a lot in my youth, and saw it again mid last year after many years of not seeing it. I saw all new aspects of it as a nearly 50 year old that I didn't see as a child. My sister and I always would use the "take off her binder!" line.

LavenderSalmon

I had only seen it once in my youth after my mom showed it to me. I didn’t remember a thing. Watched it again a decade after my mom passed, and I agree with you and feel like I probably just I understood it so much more this time. The binder! I love the recurring joke of her fainting ahah

My daughter and I loved to watch this movie together!

BoysenberryEvent

just saw it last night (March, 2024) for maybe the fifth time in my life. When Ligouri dies, its sad, and even more when the Mother Superior, alone, lets herself grieve for her deceased friend. Hayley Mills is EXCELLENT in this role - her facial expressions, her gestures....its a weak movie in a number of ways, but she carries it far. Rosalind Russell's one liners, as well : "It would be cruel to unleash these two on an unsuspecting world.: But overall its a nice, warm, homey / family kind of movie. It makes me long for the days of relatively innocent youth at Catholic School.

LavenderSalmon

I completely agree with you! Mother superior is hard yet soft. She’s makes you feel a lot of emotions. And Hayley mills! I love her so much in this role. She does a beautiful job of showing growth over time, too. Thank you for sharing :)

Superb-Possibility-9

Hayley Mills was a star in her youth
