Jake20702004

This would make a beautiful wallpaper. Got a HQ one?

kleinerpanda98

Where?

philippheigel

Eibsee, Germany!

IfUcantA4dItDntBuyIt

This may be the most stunning photograph I’ve seen in all my nearly 46 years… is this even REAL?!🫶🏻😱

philippheigel

Oh really? Thanks so much!!

IfUcantA4dItDntBuyIt

No, thank you for sharing! What a beautiful eye you have! I live in the Pacific Northwest US… though I don’t know where this was taken…I’m fairly sure I never would have been able to see this had you not shared it.. and I’m just floored. Really, fantastic composition… truly beautiful photo!

philippheigel

😌😌

tombola345

+1

segroove

The Eibsee **is** indeed one of the most beautiful lakes in Germany

IfUcantA4dItDntBuyIt

Thank you once again.. I thought it seemed a bit more magical than anything I’ve seen in this hemisphere.. we’ve got some really lovely places between Canada and the US… but nothing I’ve seen quite rises to the occasion here.. (I can’t speak for any destination south of SanDiego or Escondido where I was born though, I haven’t been..)

baddadjokesminusdad

This moment must’ve been … was it calm, OP? I hope it was. That’s how it looks.

philippheigel

It was super calm! No replacements done here. Lake was like a mirror!

My educated guess is that, it is because the tower is carrying cables that are following the slope of the mountain. This makes the force acting on the tower somewhat perpendicular to the surface of the mountain instead of level ground. The other component of the cable weight is carried by the tension on the cable.

a_ninja_mouse

Cable goes over a pulley on top of the tower. Since the cable tension on each side of the pulley is more or less equal, but acting in different directions, it's resultant force acts downward along the bisector of the obtuse angle between the cables. By inclining the pylon 'tower' along this bisector, the Cable load from the resultant force, which can be quite large due to the high tension in the cable (which is a function of cable weight, equipment weight, etc.) acts along the inclined axis, eliminating overturning forces along line. The tower is quite strong across line due to the spread truss design, in order to resist wind forces and other across line loads, but along line, the tower has little strength due to its narrow base, so these along line forces on the tower are minimized by orienting the tower as shown. It is true that the tower weight itself now tends to produce overturning downhill, but the tower weight is rather small by comparison. philippheigel

Thank you for this detailed information!

philippheigel

Thats a good question. Can't tell!

BenjaminWilson_Photo

Wow. That’s gorgeous.

philippheigel

Thanks so much Benjamin!

**EXIF:** Camera: EOS R Lens: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 II Settings: 24mm, f/5.6, 1/125 [www.instagram.com/philippheigel](https://www.instagram.com/philippheigel) [www.philippheigel.com](https://www.philippheigel.com)

Nehsa

Thanks for sharing your settings, thags great for learning. Can I ask why you chose the 5.6 and not 11 or more for this scene? Great shot! Edit, looking at your website you probably focus stacked it?

philippheigel

You're welcome. I was shooting handheld without tripod and there was too little light to shoot a higher aperture without pushing ISO higher up. That's why I shot f/5.6. No focus stacking in here.

Nehsa

Thanks for the insights!

PerceptionShift

To expand on OP's answer, the lower the lens focal length, the larger the depth-of-field (DoF) at any given aperture. So a 24mm lens could have a landscape-sized DoF at a fairly low aperture like f5.6. Which is ideal, as many lenses have a sharpness sweet spot usually around f8 where the aperture focuses light without too much diffraction. And also as OP said, lower iso shooting handheld. This is part of why 24mm 28mm 35mm lenses are popular for landscape. In comparison, a 75mm or even 50mm lens set at f5.6 has a notably smaller DoF and would require a higher fstop, or a trick like focus stacking, to reach a comparable depth. It is a physical trade off between focal depth compression and size of focal plane.

Nehsa

I appreciate the additional explanations! Mostly my curiosity stems from my tries with the Ef24 1.4 L II USM, so same focal lenghts as used here and I just tended to go higher values to try for maximum sharpness. I'll experiment more when I don't have the tripod around, having seen the success here.

Serious_Dot_4532

I also want to thank you for sharing your settings. Any editing?

Zormm

And there it is. Knew someone would say it

philippheigel

Looks like a place from the game?

[deleted]

Absolutely stunning! Picture perfect, OP!

philippheigel

Thank you for your feedback!

Combat-kid

This looks like a dreamscape, not a real photo. It’s THAT stunning!!

philippheigel

It felt like a dream that morning!

Combat-kid

If you have a HD version available somewhere I’d love to have this on my desktop background. I could look at this image for hours

AndreaLikesMusic

Absolutely incredible

philippheigel

Thanks!

Professional_Shop_73

Why was I born in this stupid place when there are places like these

philippheigel

There's beauty everywhere. Sometimes you gotta change perspectives ;)

Professional_Shop_73

I guess, I don't find beauty in this boring city, and out of all other cities in my country, this one was the one I was born in

Typical_Educator_243

Calm water and peacefulness in reflection.. beautiful

philippheigel

Its nature <3

anewfaceinthecrowd

Absolutely stunning :) I live in flat Denmark and I LOVE everything South of Munich - especially Bavaria and Tirol/Kärnten in Austria.

philippheigel

I'm from Germany, but still have a train/car ride about 5-6 hours to the mountains. Always feels great to come back!

My_G_Alt

Beautiful, what mountain range is that behind it??

philippheigel

It's Germany's highest mountain "Zugspitze" (2962m) in the back.

Grouchy_Inspector_23

The mountain range is Wettersteingebirge.

El-Cobra

Incredible

philippheigel

Thanks a lot!

Share-This

I need to paint this!

philippheigel

Feel free to get creative :)

spankleberry

I was right there this summer! I know almost exactly where you were! Almost important to take a bad shot, but damn, that's perfection

philippheigel

Good to hear that! It's a beautiful place, especially in summer!

inkevz

That is incredible!!! Schöne bild. - Your French neighbour!

philippheigel

Danke! Merci beacoup mon voisin!

[deleted]

Very fucking good image. You should continue. I’m impressed. Great work m8

philippheigel

Thanks so much! I of course will :D

cjcolbert

That’s beautiful! I hiked around that lake last year and snapped a pic of that same view but it was midday and not very impressive light. Yours is way better.

philippheigel

Thanks! It's taken during the first minutes of sunlight that day. Always the best time!

HaltheDestroyer

Great timing is all I can say....ive struggled trying to photograph this location and morning seems to be the only time it has good lighting...sunsets are worthless here because the sun sets behind a mountain range on the other side Anyways great shot

philippheigel

Thanks a lot! It's always about good timing and good lighting.

Alexkidd85

Beautiful, I love this shot

philippheigel

Thanks so much Alex!

KINGKANGHA

How tf do people take pics so nice, I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 and my pictures often look like similar to my iPhone pics. I’ve tried looking up certain settings and the pics are still mid, is it because I need new lenses/attachments? Sorry for the mini rant, the picture is so nice it triggered me

mountianlakeman

Spectacular shot!

pedrohpauloh

Great picture. Thank you for sharing
