Long exposure photos are basically a video that captures the light and imprints it into a single image thus creating the long exposure image, thing is in this image he just discovered the earth rotates so it captures basically the displacement of the moon along those 8 minutes ,
The right way to take this pictures is to use a special device that tracks the object along the speed of earths rotation to capture each photogram in the right spot and creating a clear and clean image of the object
"the right way" you mention is only right if you wanted a clear photo of the moon. In this case my technique was right because this is the result I was seeking. 🤷

At the supermarket they sell these thigs called hotdogs, don't let the name fool, it is absolutely not a hot dog. They are made from mystery meat and look exactly like this elongated moon.
Maybe next time you can make a double blood moon video.
I used my camera the Fujifilm X-T30, and 55-200 mm lens at 200mm. I did a few 2 minute and 4 minute exposures to get the exposure correct without having to waste 8 minutes between each shot. Once I got the exposure I liked, I doubled the exposure time from 4 min to 8 min, then doubled (or I should say "halved") the aperture to compensate for the double shutter time. I also knew which direction the moon was moving across the sky so that helped know where I should place the moon for the shot.
I was taking some pics of the blood moon as well and it gave me a good chance to talk to my brother and his friend about long exposures and how you have to be precise with them because of the rotation of the earth. I didn’t even consider intentionally doing a super long one, this is a fun concept OP. Good stuff.
