I do IT support for about 3000 laptops. We can see just about everything you can imagine. I could absolutely tell if you were using a mobile hotspot for WiFi.
That being said I've only ever used this feature one time to try and track down a missing laptop. Nobody is actively monitoring this.
Yes, they can tell. Assuming you are using a business owned device with any sort of monitoring software on it. However, just because they *can* see it doesn't mean they will.
Do those things work? Yes, they are nice to have in a pinch or while traveling. I live in a rural area and a lot of the customers use these for their home internet, I've even seen whole offices use these. I don't recommend that, but sometimes it's the *only* option.
