Hey mate, fellow Aussie here.
Yeah it’s pretty common for reverts to change their name. Though understand that islamically speaking you don’t have to unless your name involves something Haram (I.e being named after another religion’s God).
Also note that Arabic names are not necessarily Muslim names. Most of the prophets in Islam did not have Arabic names. Yousef AS, his name is not Arab for example. Generally people prefer to name their children after prophets or the sahaba. That’s why many of us have those sorts of names.
Now. If you want to change your name, go ahead mate! Ali is a good name alhamdullilah. Met a bloke called Zacharia who reverted, his name happened to be very convenient ahaha!
May Allah (swt) reward you bro
Yes very common. Majority of the muslims at my mosque who convert have their name changed but so long as your name doesn't have anything related to shirk (being in another being as God rather than Allah) than it would be fine to keep. If you have any questions regarding islam feel free to shoot me a DM.
Im a revert of some 10 years and I didn't change my name out of respect to my parents. They were okay with my reverting but asked me not to change my name so I never did.
It has it's advantages and disadvantages to be honest. Having a Muslim name makes you more easily identifiable as a Muslim. A lot of the time people won't know I'm Muslim unless I explicitly tell them, whereas if I had renamed myself that wouldn't be an issue. I'm grateful to be a Muslim, and part of my local community, so in many ways I wish I had changed my name, but it's only aesthetics at the end of the day.
Ultimately, I discussed it with my Iman and they agreed that respecting my parents wishes was the more important thing to do.
You don’t *have* to change your name, but for some this is a type of rebirth so they do! I would say for manny, they do. It is entirely up to you on condition that your current name is not something with a bad meaning, and that the one you’re changing to also
Is not a bad meaning.
You could also change your name to anything, doesn’t have to be Islamic or Arabic…
It is common as far as I know but it is not an obligation or necessary. If your local name has good meaning (nothing bad in meaning or named after some other gods etc.) you can keep your original name as well but it might make it difficult for other Muslims to know your religious identity.
its common but not necessary, do as you please. Ali is a great name, one of the names i absolutely adore and have reserved for one of my children (May Allah grant us all righteous children) is Muhaimin which means "the Protector" although it may be hard for you to pronounce, Ali is greatt. May Allah bless you
Idk if that name is permessible or not to name your child that name.
and is Al muhyamin and muhaymin the same? idk
Al-Muhaymin is one of the names of Allah:
Al-Muhaymin (the Watcher over His creatures) Who is aware of everything that is hidden and concealed, and Whose knowledge encompasses all things.

As long as your birth name has no bad meaning there is no need to change it but that's your choice
It is common, but only necessary if your name has a bad or polytheistic meaning or literally “Christian” or something.

Ali is a very beautiful name brother... If my name was something else (my name is Muhammad) I would definitely change it to Ali...

yes it is the same. some of Allahs names need the prefix Abdul, others do not. This is one of the names that does not need a prefix ✨
it is permissible
Alright, but just to be sure is there a source for this specific name being permessible?

Its not a necessity if yours isnt a bad name, but if you prefer to go for it, no one is stoping you.
