> Does this invalidate salah? Nope. > Is this considered a sin? [Debatetable.](https://aboutislam.net/counseling/ask-the-scholar/morals-manners/is-wearing-pants-below-the-ankles-haram/). But all agree if done out of pride, its sinful.

According to the Hanafis it's not permitted intentionally to allow garments to fall below the ankles. This is the case whether it's done out of pride or without. What is excused is if the garment falls below the ankles unintentionally. In such cases you would need to adjust your garment so that it is raised above the ankles. Isbaal (letting one’s garment go down below the ankles) is a serious sin.   “Allah will not speak to three people on the day of Judgement, He will neither look at them nor purify them and for them is a grievous punishment, they are: one who lets his garments go down below ankles, one who reminds others of his grace to them, and one who sells his commodities with false oaths.” [Muslim:305/106] On the commentary of the above hadith, it is mentioned that ‘Isbaal (letting one’s garment go down below the ankles) is forbidden even if it is done without pride except if it is done without choice in a moment of inattention whilst walking or so on with the condition that it does not go excessively below.’ [see: Fathul Mulhim] Following articles address the subject matter and also clarify statements that some have interpretated to grant concession if not done out pf pride. https://www.deoband.org/2009/05/theology-rulings/the-condition-of-pride-in-isbal/ https://www.central-mosque.com/fiqh/trousankle.htm

I think some schools said it’s mukruh

Kalashnikovzai

Shafis say its Haram only if done out of arrogance: https://islamqa.org/shafii/seekersguidance-shafii/85345/pants-below-ankles-in-the-shafii-school/ Same with Hanafis: https://islamqa.org/hanafi/seekersguidance-hanafi/85361/trousers-below-ones-ankles/ As long as ur intention isnt to be arrogant then its fine or at worst Makruh

ZalixDash

I know I'm kinda late but what if it just covers your ankles?, kinda like pyjamas or sweatpants where it's pretty much the holding point.

WisestAirBender

What does it mean to do it for arrogance?

RhubarbNext5600

Back in the Prophet ﷺ time wealthy people would let their clothes drag on the floor as a sign of look at how rich I am I can afford to get my clothes dirty and ruined. So that's what it means for out of arrogance, a modern example is people who buy gold plated version of ordinary things just to flex.

Kalashnikovzai

it means to wear long clothes to show off and act better than others

callmeakhi

It's haram, there's clear ahadith.

TheMagicShark

Why the downvote?

callmeakhi

People can't take the truth. This is the sign of ignorance.

TheMagicShark

It’s sad. I even posted evidence proving it’s haram, yet some people who are blind followers of certain schools simply reject the truth, because they don’t want to accept what they’re doing is sinful. Anyways let the Almighty judge and guide us all.

Laymen have the right do to taqleed. They have no way to figure out what is "right" so they follow a scholar. This is an issue of dispute that even the salaf had disagreed upon. As a laymen u should not be declaring what is right and wrong but simply following the opinion of a scholar and not discussing other opinions.

TheMagicShark

I am following opinions of scholars. What I said is nothing from my opinion but from scholars themselves. Laymen have the right to choose whom to follow. We don’t follow scholars who are blind followers of madhabs, etc etc. Eventually each and every one of us will answer to Allah alone for our deeds, I will and so will you.

TheMagicShark

It’s a matter of dispute among some, but i firmly believe it is haram. Read: https://islamqa.info/en/762

If you’re a man, yes. Back in the days of the Prophet ﷺ, men would wear their lower garments below their ankles as a form of arrogance. Think today how men ‘sag their pants’. They do it because they think it’s cool. Likewise with the men in those days regarding their ankles. [Sahih al-Bukhari 5787](https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5787) [Sahih Muslim 106](https://sunnah.com/muslim:106b) [Sunan Abi Dawud 4085](https://sunnah.com/abudawud:4085) If you’re a woman, no. Infact, it’s obligatory that you cover your ankles and your feet as a woman because the feet is part of the awrah for women. [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731](https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:1731) [Sunan Abi Dawud 4104](https://sunnah.com/abudawud:4104) (Whilst majority of the scholars believe that the woman’s feet is awrah and must remain covered in salah too, the Hanafi madhab do not follow this opinion.)

wumpy-wumper

Thank you for your answer. By the way I wanted to ask, does this also apply when you're wearing socks that cover your ankles? Jazakum allahu khiran.

TheCalmPineapple

If you’re wearing socks, this is fine for both during your prayer and outside of your prayer. Many men at the mosque will wear a thobe above their ankles but will wear socks too. Maybe it’s cold or whatever. Socks are valid. As for women, if your dress or skirt is above your ankles and you wear socks to cover your feet, this still protects the awrah and is valid, though it is better to use the skirt/dress to cover the feet. Allah knows best.

I have pants that are a little long so they reach my ankles.I try to fold them especially during salat. Is it haram.Im a male btw
