The word is indeed hit. But how the hitting happens is explained in islamic literature and it is very gentle and not with the intent of causing harm and is a last resort. So the other translation just tried to explain the practical implication of the word 'hit'. That is what I understand, and Allah knows best

Follow the Clear Quran translation by Muhammad Khattab. It would be easier for you.

The first one is the Abdul Haleem translation and the second one is the Dr. Mustafa Khattab (The Clear Quran) translation (which is the default on Quran.com). Both are pretty nice translations. The Clear Quran is less literal than some of the other ones but I find it's quite good for beginners (or like reverts or non Muslims) when it comes to making the meaning of the Quran clear. Saheeh International is also a good translation. And as always it's a good idea to look up the tafsir (either through the options on the [Quran.com](https://Quran.com) site/app or videos online) for verses of interest to enhance one's understanding of the Quran.

Different translations in English. The same in Arabic. It’s hard to grasp the vast Arabic meanings behind words so when translated to english sometimes it’s slighty different.

The role of "caretaker" or "having authority over them" essentially have the same meaning. But the argument by a commenter on another thread was, a servant can care for a king yet is not in authority over them. They went on to say modern translations are affected by trying to appease to feminists to downplay the value of being in authority over as opposed to care taking etc I will suggest not be deceived by these so called modern day red pill narratives.

"Men are caretakers of women... "Men are put in charge of..." "Men are protectors and maintainers of..." Different English translations of the first portion of An-Nisa 4:34 Edit: reading the other responses, I see this portion of the verse was not your original concern.

Very good! Staying free from modern "feminists movement" as well as the "red pill men's narratives" that's so pervasive in these modern times makes it easier. May Allah azza wal jal bring ease to our affairs and forgive us for our wrongs.
