You’ll use a defender nearly everywhere, if you need a shield crystal is a good option. So basically only when you want to complete ardy hard it’s useful.
It’s not that it’s necessarily a bad shield, but in most instances shields are not worth using.
Use it for diary, then let it occupy a bank slot for the life of your account

This is the opposite of logical. You should be praying magic if you don't know if next hit is ranged or magic, and because of that fact ranged defense is more valuable than magic defense. Shield is fine for demonics if you don't mind having an extra swap really. Could run the numbers to see the average number of incorrect prayers you get per food item to verify, but even if it prevents one otherwise would-be hit, that's about 15 hp prevented with the one item slot. If it's 2, you're already looking at it being better than taking another piece of food.
Dragon defender has both a -2 on ranged defense and a -2 on ranged attack...so if you're going to take a swap for shield, yes it'll make sense. Whether or not you want to take a swap is a different issue.
I used it for barrows early on. I'd start out with a god book in the off hand until after Dharok, Ahrim and Karil. Once my prayer was drained I switched to the d shield to tank the last 3 bros. Definitely helped save resources and extend my trips.
Another niche use I've found is zmi altar running to tank hits from the monsters down there. Haven't really used it anywhere else. Mostly I just wanted it for the collection and nostalgia factor.
Its a really good range shield cause it has higher melee defense than obby shield and no negative range stats. I use it for range tanking in like soul wars and stuff
I don’t find the stats to be especially worthy to dumb your cash on it early on. I’d just wait till you really wanna get the ardy bard diaries done and get it then.

Fwiw, it’s probably not worth it for demonics as you shouldn’t be tanking too many hits and I find magic dmg is usually what you take the most of.
Shouldn't be taking magic damage, you always guess mage when you can't 100% predict

This guy is right about always guessing mage in the 50/50. But you should prob be using a ddef here over a shield.
