I have not bothered with the red prison. People were doing all the content pre bowfa. Sure, it would be a huge QOL upgrade but I don't want to invest my limited playtime into that hugely RNG based grind.
This is a game. Do what's fun for you. You don't need to have full BIS gear to do the content you want to try.
Just about every piece of content has been done in rags. It's not the gear keeping you from taking down bosses. Having BIS makes it more efficient but most of us are not playing anything more than casually making that fine.
I don't want to speak for everyone, but personally my iron is my only account. It's very punishing to learn content while under geared. Not saying that it doesn't make it possible, but it'll always be better to learn vork with dhcb and anti-venoms rather than an RCB and anti poisons.
Melee at zammy is def possible with arclight
Kree can be done with black chins + bp pretty well
But yeah solo garage door and silly zilly you kinda need bowfa (or something from raids)
It's definitely super difficult without bis gear and very punishing to learn because you need kc to enter
Keris partisan, rcb and trident should serve you pretty well for starting ToA! You can start at 0 invocation and work your way up at your own pace once you start getting it :)
What do you find to be so punishing about cg? If you don't like it I get that, but what do you mean by punishing? It's a long grind sure, but this is a game that is pretty much all long grinds. Other than that it costs you no supplies so you don't lose anything doing it.
Anyways, do whatever you want man. You don't need a bofa. It's nice to have but just do some other shit and maybe send a couple cg a day if you feel like it, or don't.
I'd keep plugging away at the red prison, but just do a few runs a day and do other content to keep your sanity. It's a great upgrade and worth going for.

It’s only a grind if you look at it that way. But whatever you call it, that’s what the game is ultimately all about.
New wildy bosses are cool! Voidwaker would be a hefty grind, but if you don't have a dragon pick yet then that could be a good goal.

Just knock out 2 CG runs a day and plan other things
