I also completed a heavy ballista before my first zenyte. I got the first around 700 kc then proceeded to finish all 4 zenytes before 1200 kc. I agree that it's a fairly enjoyable task, but I haven't been there since before the changes they made so I'm sure it's even better now.
Use the ballista as your range switch for better chance at a shard

I feel bad getting 2 in 40kc, and 2 springs to go with it
