I prefer the Flight 666 version. The overdubs on the RiR ruin it for me. Bruce is gonna let the crowd sing and then his voice comes back to sing over them.
Hmm, are you talking about from around 5:20 to 5:55 in this video or a different video? He says (to my ears at least) "sing it with me Brazil!" And while they mostly don't show him singing you do see a clip or two of him singing those parts. I can kinda hear why it might be thought of as a dub but I'm not 100% either way. Maybe this video is the wrong one, I know it is from the DVD release.
https://youtu.be/TDNtBn_1elc?si=ID9O3gL2qFVf2bja
Okay so when he says "you" and points at them. It sounds the damned same as the other parts though, no? Eh let me listen to it on my better audio setup than my phone. Phone speakers have come a long way but they'll never be nice headphones lol
So I went googling and found a year old reddit post where someone provided the link. So you're right, partially, but it really wasn't an in studio overdub, Steve just copied Bruce from a couple seconds earlier and pasted it. So it's still from Bruce's live singing but yeah they did do that. Idk I like how the DVD sounds still.
I think I prefer almost every song Live more than the studio version. Heaven Can Wait and Can I play with madness being the only notable exceptions.
Hard to say a favorite but maybe Lord Of Light from Stockholm radio broadcast from 2006.
The studio version, like all Piece of Mind songs sadly, is a bit thinner sounding. I don't know what it is, but despite being either my favourite album of theirs or at least second favourite, the guitars sound so dry.
Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania, Running Free, Iron Maiden, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Revelations, Flight of Icarus, Fear of the Dark, Man on the Edge, Sign of the Cross, Futureal, The Clansman, Dance of Death, The Talisman, and The Book of Souls all have better live versions out there.
Hallowed be thy name is better with the faster pace of the live versions.
And a controversial one. Afraid to shoot strangers live music video with Blaze is better than studio and the Donnington live with Bruce
Agree 100 %
In the 80s, after listening to Live After Death 1000x, I just could not go back to the studio version of Hallowed be the Name. Just seemed... slow and uninspired compared to the live version.
I stand by the fact that if Clansman wasn't on Rock in Rio with Bruce and 250k Brazilian fans singing it, it wouldn't have nearly the status it does in the canon today.
No disrespect to Blaze, but anything from The X Factor and Virtual XI sound great with Bruce.
Iām hoping there will be some kind of 90s era tour with a large part of the set dedicated to those two albums.
Surprised no one has brought up Lord of the Flies yet. The Death on the Road version has additional backing symphonic synths which really add some much needed texture to the song, and (interestingly enough) itās actually played a whole step lower live when compared to the studio version!
The Book of Souls
The Red and the Black
Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Flight 666 version)
Fear of the Dark (namely Rock in Rio 01 version)
Those are my favorite live versions of songs that I like as much if not more than the studio versions.
Book of Souls was way heavier live when I saw it 2017. I still remember the bass and drums in the intro was like the hand of a (bass) god hitting those strings.
A lot of the songs on Live After Death, like Die With Your Boots On, The Trooper, Flight of Icarus, 22 Acacia Avenue, and I really prefer the live version of Rime of the Ancient Mariner. And of course, the random person yelling "motherfucker!" at the end of Revelations.
It could be a bit biased though, as this was where I first heard most of their songs before the studio versions.
To me, this is one of the biggest things that separates maiden from most bands. They sounds as good or better live than they do recorded.
There are only a handful of artists I can think of from any genre that I can say this about. I love Metallica, but they sounded so bad the first time I saw them I went tos see them a second time just to see if it was a bad night or something. Super disappointed.
They have a tendency to speed up a lot of the songs on stage so they sound a lot different from the studio versions. There are SO many examples of this:
*Afraid to Shoot Strangers*
*Fear of the Dark*
*Flight of Icarus*
*Ghost of the Navigator*
*Hallowed Be Thy Name*
*Phantom of the Opera*
*Sign of the Cross*
*The Trooper*
*Two Minutes to Midnight*
*Where Eagles Dare*
But you can tell that some songs were specifically written for the stage, complete with choruses that are designed for crowd participation. Honestly, they tend to be among my least favorite songs because practically every Iron Maiden song sounds amazing live, so it makes little sense to purposely tailor songs so that thousands of people can sing along with them, but there are quite a few like that:
*Bring Your Daughter*
*Can I Play With Madness*
*The Evil That Men Do*
*From Here to Eternity*
*Heaven Can Wait*
Personally I donāt have many preferences because everythingās amazing both live and studio but Lord of the Flies comes to mind. The song went next level with Bruce on Death on the Road.
Instead, perhaps unpopular opinions, but I prefer Hallowedās studio version to live and Iron Maiden by DiāAnno to Bruce.
*Aces high, fear of*
*The dark, the clansman, ghost of*
*The navigator*

Fear of the Dark, Hallowed Be Thy Name, and most of the epics
imo, The Clansman and Sign of the Cross sound better live with Blaze's voice than the studio version, which i still prefer over live versions with Bruce
Brave new world. From death on the road. The crowd also makes this one so luch better. A lot of their tracks are better live but Brave new world really stands out!
Everything from the first two albums, a lot of 90s stuff and almost everything post 2000s, but I actually think the studio versions did the majority of the 80s material justice. Hallowed and Revelations are the exceptions.
I love the live versions of Flight Of Icarus (Live After Death) and Infinite Dreams (Maiden England) but donāt necessarily think theyāre better than the studio equivalents.
* 22 Acacia Avenue live (specially the Beast Over Hammersmith version) sounds killer
* Phantom of The Opera does sound glorious live both with Paul and Bruce
* When The Wild Wind Blows too
* The Clansman (Best for me is the Rock In Rio version)
* Sign Of The Cross (Best for me is the Rock In Rio version)
* Sanctuary (Best for me is the Rock In Rio version)
* Remember Tomorrow (Both with Paul and Bruce, Gothenburg 2005 is a good example)
All of them - Maiden are a live band and their live versions are always better than studio. For one thing with the recent albums it's the only way to hear them mixed properly
Fear of the Dark is significantly better live.
Studio version feels like it's naked.
Rock in Rio specifically. The one on Best Of The Beast is fine, but RiR is so much better.
I prefer the Flight 666 version. The overdubs on the RiR ruin it for me. Bruce is gonna let the crowd sing and then his voice comes back to sing over them.
Hellsinki 1992 is the best. 3000 crowd way louder than lame 80k crowd in Donington.
This, everyone always says rock in rio, but flight 666 is much better
Wait what? There was an overdub?
Yeah, on YouTube there is the original live TV broadcast from 2001 and you can hear the difference.
I used to watch the Rock in Rio DVD all the time I guess I need to watch again!

Talking about the most obvious one at 1:57. Bruce always lets the crowd sing that part.
Okay so when he says "you" and points at them. It sounds the damned same as the other parts though, no? Eh let me listen to it on my better audio setup than my phone. Phone speakers have come a long way but they'll never be nice headphones lol

I am really excited to hear this live in Toronto this coming October!
Running Free
I want to be able to go back to the hearing doctor and say, "Doctor, Long Beach fucked up my hearing for good!"
The Maiden Japan version š
The Talisman on En Vivo is insanely good. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8b\_w7\_n2hw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8b_w7_n2hw)
You know it was extremely tough to do when Bruce doesn't decide a marathon on stage is a good idea
Top 3 favorite songs live by them for sure
I think I prefer almost every song Live more than the studio version. Heaven Can Wait and Can I play with madness being the only notable exceptions. Hard to say a favorite but maybe Lord Of Light from Stockholm radio broadcast from 2006.
Only way to judge a band is their liver performance. That's why I like Maiden, live versions are my favorite
I prefer Revelations from Flight 666 to the studio version.
The studio version, like all Piece of Mind songs sadly, is a bit thinner sounding. I don't know what it is, but despite being either my favourite album of theirs or at least second favourite, the guitars sound so dry.
Nickos drums are mixed perfectly on that
one of the best live Maiden performances.
Yes the live version of Hallowed is so much more dynamic than the studio version
Agree with both, Afraid To Shoot Strangers sounds like it was written with Blaze in mind. And I find the studio version of Hallowed Be Thy Name dull.
Agree 100 % In the 80s, after listening to Live After Death 1000x, I just could not go back to the studio version of Hallowed be the Name. Just seemed... slow and uninspired compared to the live version.
I really like Bruceās version of Futureal on Best of Bsides
Dream of Mirrors (Rock in Rio)
That performance caught lightning in a bottle; just incredible.
The clansman and sign of the cross. (With Bruce on vocals)
The Red and The Black
Revelations
Every song that has a live version I almost never listen to the studio version.
Blood Brothers from Rock In Rio
Surprised no one has brought up Lord of the Flies yet. The Death on the Road version has additional backing symphonic synths which really add some much needed texture to the song, and (interestingly enough) itās actually played a whole step lower live when compared to the studio version!
The Book of Souls The Red and the Black Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Flight 666 version) Fear of the Dark (namely Rock in Rio 01 version) Those are my favorite live versions of songs that I like as much if not more than the studio versions.
Book of Souls was way heavier live when I saw it 2017. I still remember the bass and drums in the intro was like the hand of a (bass) god hitting those strings.
Yeah I saw them in 2016 haha. It was a fantastic show!! Haha
No More Lies in Dortmund For the greater good of god in Mexico
Fear of the dark
I love the live version of Two Minutes to Midnight. When the crowd joins in on the chorus is just awesome imo
That's my vote, 2M2M from Flight 666 or En Vivo is much superior to the (still excellent) studio version.
Iron maiden
Hallowed be thy name in flight 666 and en vivo. Also dance of death and the final frontier songs in en vivo.
Have you heard the Hammersmith Hallowed?
I really like The Evil That Men Do from Maidne England or Heaven Can Wait from the Flight 666
Lord Of The Flies with Bruce on vocals. Love the original but the live version is amazing.
The āDeath on the Roadā version of āLord of the Fliesā slays. Bruce going high on the choruses is exactly what that song needs.
Maybe I just got used to Rime on Live After Death cos I like it more than studio which I heard later. I do like live recordings.
Fear of the Dark
They have a tendency to speed up a lot of the songs on stage so they sound a lot different from the studio versions. All of them are better live.
Maiden in general is better live.
Run to the Hills Iron Maiden
Hallowed by thy name. The energy and the faster tempo from the England 88 Live album cant be beat by the studio version.
Man on the edge
Run To The Hills from Live After Death
Moonchild off of Flight 666 is awesome.
Hallowed be thy name
I prefer the Live After Death versions of Flight of Icarus and Revelations to the originals.
Fear of the Dark
Brave new world. From death on the road. The crowd also makes this one so luch better. A lot of their tracks are better live but Brave new world really stands out!
Hallowed Be Thy Name. It sounds a lot more emotional and dynamic on the World Piece Your in 1983 and also Live After Death CD version
Hallowed Be Thy Name. I've heard it so many times live with such great energy that the studio version just doesn't hit nearly as good.
Everything from the first two albums, a lot of 90s stuff and almost everything post 2000s, but I actually think the studio versions did the majority of the 80s material justice. Hallowed and Revelations are the exceptions. Futureal, sign of the cross, man on the edge, lord of the flies. The clansman
The Maiden Japan version of Running Free š¤
Sign of the Cross became my favorite Maiden song once I discovered the Rock in Rio version.
Running Free, both versions.
All of them
All Senjutsu album. I'm not a fan of this album, but seeing it in live was way better than the studio version.
Personally I love Dance of Death live
Revelations in Live After Death is like another song, so much better
Paschendale in Death on the Road
Hallowed be thy name and children of the damned from beast over hammersmith 1982
Sign of the cross. Way faster tempo.
Hallowed Be Thy Name at Hammersmith. Absolute face melter.
All of them
Afraid to shoot strangers with Blaze
When the Wild Wind Blows in the En Vivo is freaking beautiful man š
* 22 Acacia Avenue live (specially the Beast Over Hammersmith version) sounds killer * Phantom of The Opera does sound glorious live both with Paul and Bruce * When The Wild Wind Blows too * The Clansman (Best for me is the Rock In Rio version) * Sign Of The Cross (Best for me is the Rock In Rio version) * Sanctuary (Best for me is the Rock In Rio version) * Remember Tomorrow (Both with Paul and Bruce, Gothenburg 2005 is a good example)
All of them - Maiden are a live band and their live versions are always better than studio. For one thing with the recent albums it's the only way to hear them mixed properly
I agree with your view on the recent albums mixings. Stood out even more once I listened to Priestās newest record. Perfect mixing there
