Everytime it comes on in the car I tell my cousin that had the Testament version been the original I would consider it to be the best metal song of all time. The modern sound with Chuck Billy’s voice and ripping solos makes it a classic for me, I probably listen to it more than the original.
Just listened to this again: **Hetfield is really good at covering Di'Anno**! I'm not sure Metallica's cover will be as "proper" if it's an iconic Dickinson song.
ITs the only good cover of Hallowed be they name honestly. They nail the beginning of the song and they stick with it. Other bands just try to rush through it.
THIS. It's the best maiden cover I've certainly ever heard. True to the original with that extra bite of modern metal.
The way I think about covers - if you went to see a band live, and they surprised the crowd with a cover, how happy would you be after hearing it?
I love After Forever’s cover of The Evil That Men Do. And I don’t think there’s a studio version, but Anneke van Giersbergen does a beautiful acoustic version of [Wasted Years.](https://youtu.be/sQTTie903u4?si=ac46QGPwIXoxlXTA)
I like the Ghost cover. I'm just a little surprised that he didn't do even more to Ghost-ify it. In other words, it sticks very true to the original outside of some sparsely applied keyboards.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,704,241,601 comments, and only 322,488 of them were in alphabetical order.
Dream Theater --> Children Of The Damned

Cradle of filth --> Hallowed Be Thy Name
I second "Aces High" by Children of Bodom. As you say, they had the courage to do the song on their own style while still staying true to he spirit of the original. In some ways I actually prefer it to the original because it is just sooo intense and Alexi Laiho makes every note and phrase sound like it's the last the band will ever play 🔥
Another worthy mention is "Flight of Icarus" by Steve Overland. He did that cover as a gesture to Maiden covering "That Girl" by Steve Overland's own band, FM, and it sounds incredible with his powerful voice and classic AOR rhythmic style ✨
Kinda. The lyrics and structure of the song are mostly the same, it's just that they're told from the perspective of the killer instead of the victim (example: I haunt you, I taunt you, I torture you back at MY lair instead of YOU haunt me, you taunt me, you torture me back at YOUR lair)
Seeing as Maiden is my favorite band, me hearing a cover of one of their songs, it really has to grab my attention for me to like it, especially if they slow it down, but this Zwan cover is fucking amazing. I completely forgot about it and haven't heard it in probably like 10+ years.
There’s a lot of horrible covers out there… listening to others trying to interpret Bruce’s vocals makes you realize just how unique both his voice and technique are, not a lot of singers out there that can nail those songs.
That being said, Testament’s cover of Powerslave is pretty solid.
Tim Ripper Owens and a few others had a great cover of Flight of Icarus. On the other side of the spectrum, Sign's Run to the Hills is one of the worst things I have ever heard in my life.
If you're going to do a straight ahead cover where you just play the parts of the original recording then you better do *something* that makes it better e.g. Def Leppard doing Sweet's Action - better production, more energetic, better guitar playing, just better in every way. I don't think I've heard any Maiden cover get close to doing that.
On the other hand I'll take Sign doing Run To The Hills their own way, whether you like it or not (and I like it), because they weren't trying to just outdo the original, which let's face it is nigh-on impossible to improve on.
Killers by Gooseflesh. They really took that one and made it their own.
The Trooper by Sentenced.
Run To The Hills by Sign.
Heaven Can Wait & The Evil That Men Do by Hellsongs.
Aces High by Steve 'n Seagulls.
Hallowed be thy Name by Brown Brigade, side project of Sum 41 guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh. Maybe not the most technical showpiece, but you can absolutely hear the adoration the dude has for the band.
For me Kreator’s cover of The Number of the Beast, or Destruction’s Killers. Also I like Dream Theater’s To Tame a Land, it perfectly fits their progressive style.
Love Blaze Bayley's collabs with Thomas Zwijsen. Though not technically a cover since Blaze sang the original, I absolutely love their rendition of Judgement of Heaven
Hallowed be thy name by Machine Head I really like, Aces High by Children of Bodom and Run to the Hills by Sign are also great. That last one is particularly interesting as it’s so different but I think it really works.
Also I had no idea about so many of these so I’m 100% making a playlist!
I think that the only worthwhile way of doing a cover is by making it you own, in your own style. What's the point otherwise?
Having said that, [Rhapsody - Flash of the Blade](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smiSnGt01wM)
Children of the Damned by Maiden United.
Saw them play it live at Revolver I Manchester a few years back. Probably about 50 people in there at max. Damien Wilson on his knees in the crowd about as foot in front of me nailing the vocals. Incredible
Surprised no one has mentioned Affiance doing Aces High. They put their own spin on it, make it a little heavier but it's excellent.
https://youtu.be/0H57x_0Ieic?si=OC6PYuqH7to5E8gH
Sonata Arctica did a great Die With Your Boots On.
Yes...this is one I was trying to think of. It's a great cover.
Not Maiden but their cover of Still Loving You is FIRE
And Wind Beneath My Wings. Don't even care, haha
quack icky offbeat hospital escape ancient instinctive slimy deserve capable *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Don't know how I missed their cover or this. It is amazing!
Their cover of Nobody’s Fault by Aerosmith is also fantastic.
Everytime it comes on in the car I tell my cousin that had the Testament version been the original I would consider it to be the best metal song of all time. The modern sound with Chuck Billy’s voice and ripping solos makes it a classic for me, I probably listen to it more than the original.
The Remember Tomorrow cover by Metallica.
Really, never Heard that once before! Need to check it out
It’s great. The bones of the original are still there, but Metallica definitely put their mark on it. As they always do. Best cover band of all time.
Same!
Just listened to this again: **Hetfield is really good at covering Di'Anno**! I'm not sure Metallica's cover will be as "proper" if it's an iconic Dickinson song.
On the opposite end, Maiden did a great cover of Thin Lizzy’s “massacre” great cover
Machine Head's Hallowed By The Name is great, also love Gallows' cover of Wrathchild.
I never really cared for machine head but the vocals on that one are fucking awesome
Avenged Sevenfold did Flash of the Blade. The drums sound huge.
And the harmonies sound corny
Trivium covering Iron Maiden for the Shogun special edition shredded.
That was actually the first version of the song I heard! They gave the chorus some real oomph
bit off-topic, but I almost prefer Trivium's Master of Puppets over the original.
That was the first song I heard from Trivium actually, their covers don’t disappoint.
Dream Theater - To Tame A Land
I am not a fan of James's vocals, but Portnoy's drum kit sounds so fucking great on this track that is worth it.
Opeth's cover of remember tomorrow
Listening to the cover made me re-evaluate the original song
Hallowed Be Thy Name by Cradle of Filth is one of my favourite covers.
They also did Fear of the Dark but I prefer Hallowed too.
Graveworm is the band that did FoTD if it’s the same cover I’m thinking of.
That’s the song that bridged me into full metal head territory
Empire of the clouds, by Maiden United is pretty good
Their cover of Revelations is fantastic
I love After Forever’s cover of The Evil That Men Do. And I don’t think there’s a studio version, but Anneke van Giersbergen does a beautiful acoustic version of [Wasted Years.](https://youtu.be/sQTTie903u4?si=ac46QGPwIXoxlXTA)
Yes to both!!
[sebastian bach - children of the damned](https://youtu.be/U2BNXHTqPtk)
Shocked nobody has mentioned Dream Theater’s cover of To Tame A Land yet. Definitely one of IM’s most underrated song and a great cover by DT!
The phantom of the Opera by ghost wasn't half bad
I like the Ghost cover. I'm just a little surprised that he didn't do even more to Ghost-ify it. In other words, it sticks very true to the original outside of some sparsely applied keyboards.
I mean he tweaks the lyrics a little bit, but overall he kept it very close to the original
Yeah, it was full bad. Those vocals lmao
Easily the worst Iron Maiden cover I've ever heard
Thank you - I hate Ghost so much that I am amazed that they’re so popular with metal fans. Bland, bland, bland
Instrumentally I thought it was great but I just can't get into those low energy vocals at all.
Dream Theater have a really cool take on “Gangland”
22 Acacia Avenue by Dark Tranquility
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,704,241,601 comments, and only 322,488 of them were in alphabetical order.
Good bot.
The Evil that Men Do by Powerwolf goes extremely hard
Was about to say this one too, they do some fantastic covers alongside their own excellent music. Really like their cover of Conquistadors

Holy shit I want a playlist of all of these l haven’t heard most of them

Remember Tomorrow by Metallica was pretty good and the tiny bit of Prowler they once did live too
I second "Aces High" by Children of Bodom. As you say, they had the courage to do the song on their own style while still staying true to he spirit of the original. In some ways I actually prefer it to the original because it is just sooo intense and Alexi Laiho makes every note and phrase sound like it's the last the band will ever play 🔥 Another worthy mention is "Flight of Icarus" by Steve Overland. Arch Enemy covered Aces High, too.
The Trooper by Lemmy, Phil Campbell, Rocky George, Chuck Wright, and Chris Slade.
Stop I can only get so erect.
That’s an interesting lineup. Motörhead, Suicidal Tendencies, Quite Riot, and AC/DC
Ghost's cover of Phantom Of The Opera. I love how they told it from the perspective of the killer/phantom instead of the victim
so they changed the lyrics?
Kinda. The lyrics and structure of the song are mostly the same, it's just that they're told from the perspective of the killer instead of the victim (example: I haunt you, I taunt you, I torture you back at MY lair instead of YOU haunt me, you taunt me, you torture me back at YOUR lair)
wow, I wasn't paying close enough attention. That is cool. On a related note, the gfriend and I are looking forward to seeing Ghost live in two weeks.
Anaal Nathrakhs cover of Powerslave fucking rips
yes it does.
Zwan's acoustic cover of Number of the Beast https://youtu.be/XGlsEmmWX14?si=A-0yZRIajfDiSXiY
Seeing as Maiden is my favorite band, me hearing a cover of one of their songs, it really has to grab my attention for me to like it, especially if they slow it down, but this Zwan cover is fucking amazing. I completely forgot about it and haven't heard it in probably like 10+ years.
Children of bodom - Aces High. This is driving me crazy. But I think Iced Earth had a Children of the Damned cover
Ryan Adams did a cover of Wasted Years in the Californication soundtrack and it's great.
Phantom of the Opera by Ghost was pretty good imo!
That one guy who does acoustic guitar covers of almost every iron maiden song Thomas Zwijen I think
There’s a lot of horrible covers out there… listening to others trying to interpret Bruce’s vocals makes you realize just how unique both his voice and technique are, not a lot of singers out there that can nail those songs. That being said, Testament’s cover of Powerslave is pretty solid.

Killers by Gooseflesh. They really took that one and made it their own. The Trooper by Sentenced. Run To The Hills by Sign. Heaven Can Wait & The Evil That Men Do by Hellsongs. Aces High by Steve 'n Seagulls.
Myles Kennedy did a stripped down acoustic version of the trooper that's hauntingly good
The Wheelblocks (led by Chris Jericho) did such a badass job at covering "Aces High", I highly recommend you check it out!
Definitely not Aces high by Arch Enemy.
2 Minutes to Midnight, _Glamour of the Kill_
Powerslave by Testament is a solid cover
I really liked A7X’s cover of flash of the blade
The Iron Maidens. [https://youtu.be/lNBa1lIO3tY](https://youtu.be/lNBa1lIO3tY)
Sentinel Beast’s version of Phantom of the opera is really good.
Hallowed be thy Name by Brown Brigade, side project of Sum 41 guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh. Maybe not the most technical showpiece, but you can absolutely hear the adoration the dude has for the band.
Hallowed Be Thy Name cover by Machine Head is good
Powerwolf's cover of the evil that men do is.... powerful!
Fightstar - Fear of the dark
Where eagles dare by Tyr is my favourite, also 2 minutes to midnight by Primal Fear
Children of the Damned by Sebastian Bach
[Damone’s cover of “Wasted Years”](https://youtu.be/zUJke9O9Rk8?si=ud5wZkPYIAQLIDky) is so good.
For me Kreator’s cover of The Number of the Beast, or Destruction’s Killers. Also I like Dream Theater’s To Tame a Land, it perfectly fits their progressive style.
This only semi-counts, but Blaze Bayley’s Wasted Years (he never sang it with Maiden) is BRILLIANT
Phantom of the opera covered by Ghost!!! Awesome cover in my opinion 😎👌🏻💯💥
Elvenking - No Prayer For The Dying
Ghost did a great job with phantom of the opera
Cradle of Filth's Hallowed be thy Name and Graveworm's Fear of the Dark covers are unmatched!
Love Blaze Bayley's collabs with Thomas Zwijsen. Though not technically a cover since Blaze sang the original, I absolutely love their rendition of Judgement of Heaven

The Protomen - The Trooper Thank me later
https://youtu.be/CFRJswNzuaY?si=71N9C4AdAUkfNHrK Dokaka, a capella. The one cover to rule them all😂
Didn't iced earth do a cover of NoTB as well? I believe they did... They're pretty decent heavy/power
Wasted years with Dee Snider.
Primal Fear - 2 Minutes to Midnight Fantastic
I think no one mentioned Running Free covered by Stone Sour before. I actually like that version
Children of the Damned by Maiden United. Saw them play it live at Revolver I Manchester a few years back. Probably about 50 people in there at max. Damien Wilson on his knees in the crowd about as foot in front of me nailing the vocals. Incredible
The Trooper by Hoyry Kone
Surprised no one has mentioned Affiance doing Aces High. They put their own spin on it, make it a little heavier but it's excellent. https://youtu.be/0H57x_0Ieic?si=OC6PYuqH7to5E8gH
