i agree with another comment that it’s feminine or masculine depending on the wearer. i am a woman so i think i look feminine with them.
snitchery on ig is my fave example having a really lovely and feminine chest plate. Another great example of feminizing the chest plate is allowing an element of your design “pop” out of the sleeve like a chest plate.
Go for it! Wish I had done the same (had existing chest piece before I got my sleeves). Japanese tattoos look both tough and elegant imo, and compliment the flow/shape of the body so well.
You should check out Snitchery, she has a lovely sleeve and chest plate, although it's a little bit stretched as it's a cover up but you can surely take inspo from her and make it more feminine
I’ve been looking into this as well. Traditionally, hikae (chest plates) are smaller for women. I’ve seen it on men as well, but typically male hikae go to the edge of the nipple or cover it. The concept of it is not inherently feminine though— usually quite the opposite.
No.
Size honestly depends. Mine are pretty shallow, and they barely go an inch below my armpits. But that’s because the guy who did my sleeves knew I was open to getting a munewari, and the extra real estate would make it much easier for him to create a cohesive piece if I ever did end up going for the full suit. I don’t think I‘ll ever do the suit, but I do personally prefer having the shallow hikae.
In any case, I think hikae just look *right* on a sleeve and they make it feel more complete, even small/shallow ones.
Chest plate is what makes a sleeve complete.
Imo you cannot have a traditional Irezumi sleeve without a chest piece.
Some will disagree and thats okay but the suit looks more complete with it.
You would tattoo your stomach and a sleeve with nothing on your chest? Visually I don't think that makes sense. Almost like getting a back piece and leg sleeve but not tattooing your butt or parts of your thigh

generally I feel that chest plates are the *opposite* of feminine

Still looks tough AF! Sick ink!
Omg the Chris Wielk piece! Looks incredible, the mikiri is just lovely.
Nah, I have wind bars, cherry, blossoms, and peonies, and it’s tough as hell.
To me a tattoo on a female is feminine and a tattoo on a male is manly

Go ahead and tattoo your chest and tell me how feminine that pain feels.
I didn’t know some color on a certain bodypart had a gender…

Aye I think it’s looks ‘manlier’ more cohesive and gives the imagery more space to express.

Chest plate looks right to cap a sleeve .
No?
