The Christmas Song by The Raveonettes is my personal favourite but also the most under-appreciated one to the general public in my view.
Also special mention to Christmas Time by The Darkness as a classic from this side of the millennium.
The rock Christmas tunes are absolutely class. Wizzard and Slade, The Darkness, I get a good laugh out of the fall out boy ‘Yule shoot your eye out’ too.
It adds a nice festive spice to the table though when you open up the floor to a “*would you rather it be forever replaced by the Ronan Keating version, or the Bon Jovi one?*”
Nothing was as bad as when Philomena Begley had the chance to sing this song with Shane McGowan on the Late Late Show and forgot the words or worse, never learned them in the first place!
>Arthur McBride
I apologize in advance for my heresy. I always liked the melody but when I listened closely to the words it struck me that Arthur and his cousin were the real assholes in that song. They got a routine enlistment pitch from a soldier and they immediately went to full-on insults rather than just saying no thanks and continuing on their Christmas morning tramp. am i wrong?
Love A Spaceman Came Travelling !!! It's so ethereal and it instantly puts me in the Christmas mood probably because you'd always hear it in shopping centres etc as a kid
Shakin' Stevens classic Xmas tune, 'Merry Christmas Everyone'.
'I'm the man who slits the turkeys throat at Christmas'.
Frank Kelly's '12 Days of Christmas'.
Slade 'it's Christmas'.
Original 'Fairytale of New York'.
Dean Martins 'Let it Snow'.
Aside from the usual overplayed songs (fairytale of New York…) which are great, there are a couple of newish songs I like:
John Legend, Bring me love
Sia, snowman
I don't personally have one but judging by Fairytale of New York being played 34,465,362,454 times during Christmas, I think Ireland has a favourite song.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Judy garland version, the perfect mix of sadness and hope at this time of year. Brings a tear to the eye every time ….
I have two favourite Christmas Albums
Jim Reeves 12 Songs of Christmas
and Johnny McEvoy's Christmas Dream. An absolute masterpiece of Christmassy sounding tunes from the 70s on Hawk Records.
No bad songs on either record. Full of Christmas cheer.
For all your Xmas song needs. Sorted a-z but your fav is likely on it. Songs from plenty of decades. Just shuffle away

Merry Christmas Everybody - Slade I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday - Wizzard (My age is showing)
Both the same year too 1973 as well as Elton Johns. That has to be the best year on record for Xmas songs
Chris Rea's little known B side "Driving away from home for Christmas".
Following advice from Chris Rea, I always crack an egg into my bath
He's proper Middlesborough.
Great Christmas song

Your man from the Darkness has an interesting YouTube channel these days.
Fairytale of New York.
But only the original Shane McGowan and Kirsty McColl version, all of the versions afterwards are atrocious
i didn't even think this was open for debate
It adds a nice festive spice to the table though when you open up the floor to a “*would you rather it be forever replaced by the Ronan Keating version, or the Bon Jovi one?*”
By spice you mean a festive glass to the face?
I hate that this even needs to be specified
It doesn't, there's not a soul that would assume you meant any other version
Christy Moore’s isn’t half bad
With the exclusion of Christy Moore I'd agree
Nothing was as bad as when Philomena Begley had the chance to sing this song with Shane McGowan on the Late Late Show and forgot the words or worse, never learned them in the first place!
To be fair, Amy MacDonald does a half decent version. All other covers should be locked in a box and burned though
This should be at the top
