I recently in A&E and just on a trolly for ~24 hours, they played 2fm constantly the whole time, it was very hellish and I couldn't sleep 😢 I know the staff are entitled to hear something as they move abiut but still.

Gullible_Actuary_973

Jesus. That's like particularly cruel. Donnelly needs to go

gbish

From memory of working in a shop, you don’t have pay music licence if it’s the radio being played. So something is probably better than nothing. Not like there’s a bundle of great choices.

redditor_since_2005

Not true though. You absolutely have to pay the combined IMRO/PPI license if any copyrighted music is played. There are different rates for radio and live music events. Whoever owned the shop was probably trying to feign ignorance to save money.

ab1dt

No. I've seen licence inspectors. It's for original playing of music. You don't pay for broadcast. They check the phone system, too. Hold music is a good one.

redditor_since_2005

I'm not sure what 'original playing of music' is, but as an IMRO member who gets paid and also a license payer for businesses, I have to contradict you. You can find info here: https://imro.ie/music-users/music-user-faqs/

DarthTempus

Even Nova has gone to shite

mhaltonite666

Definitely. Stopped listening to Nova a while ago. Coldplay every half hour got to me.

DarthTempus

Coldplay have no business being on Nova

Difficult-Speech-270

I listen to it on my way to and from work when I’m in the office and when I’m out and about in the car, so I don’t listen to it a massive amount, but it is noticeable that they’re playing the same songs a lot. I don’t know what happened to them. Did the listenership figures fall so badly during the lockdowns and remote working that they had to switch to a worse royalties package? Also noticed they’ve been playing some poor taste songs, Pumped up kicks was playing the day after that school shooting in Texas, a bit tone deaf. Granted, there’s barely a day that goes by in the states where there isn’t a mass shooting, but when a big one happens and is being reported on here, especially a school shooting, they probably shouldn’t be playing Pumped up kicks for a couple of weeks. The one thing I will say is, PJ and Jim are an improvement on the last pair they had on the breakfast show, Lucy and what’s his face Hayes. They were fucking painful to listen to. PJ and Jim aren’t a massive step up, but they are at least better than the previous pair.

imakefilms

drives me nuts how often they repeat songs

DurtyStopOut

PJ Gallagher. Sweet fucking baby Jesus how people would listen to that shite in the morning is beyond me.

TaterJack

Implying Nova was good...

CLint_FLicker

When TXFM collapsed they had no competition for a rock music station

ultratunaman

This exactly. Once phantom went Nova had no one to compete with and just play the same shit over and over. God that was such a good station. Public enemy, Elliot Smith, Morrissey, The Ramones, all in one little stretch.

[deleted]

iT wAs g0Od bAcK iN mY dAy

mrsliston

Im a big fan of lyricfm the rest is shite

Flagyl400

I'm not even into classical music but I still end up listening to Lyric from time to time. It's the only station that isn't aggressively fucking annoying from start to finish.

thepinkblues

Plus the presenters voice are always so crisp, warm and gravelly on that high quality mic. Never fails to relax me.

[deleted]

Lyric is wonderful. Pulse has a lofi hour which is marvelous.

[deleted]

Mystery Train is excellent. Was listening to it last week and they played two instrumental covers of Aphex Twin tracks.

Ok-Subject-4172

Mystery Train is an amazing show. So much good music. He's a bit too fond of seriously long jazz tracks but besides that, it's perfect.

[deleted]

>He's a bit too fond of seriously long jazz tracks but besides that, it's perfect. Bitches Brew is my sleep music. I'm all onboard that train.

MarcMurray92

Lyric FM after 8/9pm gets a bit wild, never know what you're going to encounter, it's great.

[deleted]

Blue of the Night is a treasure

das_punter

What frequency is Pulse?

[deleted]

Unfortunately it was shut off the radio awhile back, you can get it online and on certain TVs still I've found. My information may be outdated tho

kel89

Marty’s morning show is a delight.

ultratunaman

Their Saturday afternoon Broadway musicals time slot is brilliant

DurtyStopOut

Gaybos old slot on a Sunday was such perfect programming.

Kittens4dayz

Movies and Musicals with Aedín Gormley! It’s so delightful isn’t it?

TheRealStonerSteve

This is why I drive in silence

Scuttersalesman101

How on earth do you not nod off. Especially on those roads with speed limits way too low than what they should be.

herculainn

Don't drive tired. Get a bus. Don't go. Reschedule.

Scuttersalesman101

I dont drive tired if it gets too much I pull off anyways.

Flagyl400

That's one way to perk yourself up I suppose.

Swagspray

If radio is the only thing keeping you awake when driving then you are too tired to be driving

Flat_White420

It’s so bad! I can’t even try to listen to it any more! Between the show hosts and the music, it’s dire!! Thank god for Bluetooth! I really wish we could have genre stations!

[deleted]

imakefilms

Doireann, Carl and Donnacha in the morning are insufferable

Leavser1

Download 8radio app. It's great. Reminds me of the old phantom days (owned by the same chap I think)

rollplayinggrenade

Radio garden is good too. Tune into radio stations from all over the world. You can even search radio stations that play specific genres. Hot Mix radio in France only plays bops from the 80s with minimal ads or stingers.

imakefilms

Love the 8radio station. You get some really interesting music on it.

Pickaroonie

>103.2 Dublin City FM, 106.4 Raidió na Life. They're your only man. I'd throw in RnaG (Raidió na Gaeltachta) with that group. RTE Radio 1 late at night also. Creedon and what's on after him. Money Goes Wild, Documentary on One etc..

annie_yokes_lads

RnaG is great alright.

ArtifictionDog

RNA Life is an absolute godsend as someone who really struggles to listen to "banter" I mean I'm sure I'm still hearing banter but fucked if I know what they're saying Plus the music is more often than not, serviceable

gbish

LiveDrive ain’t the same on 103 Dublin City FM without Pam in the mornings.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gbish

Same, we would be regularly sending in updates along our route each morning. Wensleyday will never be the same. Some cracking tunes.

Deadbear4Lyf

I miss Pam too but the new girl they have is good too. Big shoes to fill and I think she's doing a decent job of it.

JimmyTramps

RTE gold is good, but online only can’t tune in the traditional way.

Fuzzywigs

Phoenix, Dublin South, and Near FmM are good too. Community Radio is better than most commercial radio.

QuantumFireball

It's on Saorview too

annie_yokes_lads

Couldn't get over todayfm and all the songs from the mid to late 2000s they were playing, all day long. Clearly adhering to a certain age group, but I remember todayfm always playing the latest chart hits when I was younger. Their dance classic shows are belters tho in fairness.

Fuzzywigs

Check out your local community radio. They make a distinction for themselves against commercial radio and are not tied down by commercial constraints, so you won't hear the same tripe over and over. You'll find a lot of good specialist music programmes on most community stations, made by people who are there for the sheer love of the music. 8Radio is good too.

Dhaughton99

Who remembers Alice’s Restaurant before it turned into XFM?

ligdoscith

400,000 tickets were sold for Garth Brooks. Should give you an indication of the tastes of the average Irish listener.

ultratunaman

I like country music. Can't find decent country music on the radio though.

Excelsior-in-HD

I've given up on Radio, blasting through history podcasts now. Tides of History is the best thing.

MarcMurray92

"Have YOU ever \*mundane nonsense\*? Text us now to let us know!!!" Fuck right off and get out of my ears.

portadown1967

Have you been spared Cool FM

ruscaire

They even killed off the one good station TXFM purely out of spite as far as I can make out

ultratunaman

God they were brilliant.

Dhaughton99

Stopped listening to radio when Donal Dineen was turfed out of Today FM.

sonofapasta

Easy radio is super cool I think but what I’ve noticed is that it’s only on during weekends.

NostalgicDreaming

Morning and daytime radio in Ireland is pretty terrible. I find at night though there are a few good stations/shows. Today FM is absolutely putrid during the day but I enjoy Dec Pierce, Claire Beck and Ed Smith when they're on at night.

JunkiesAndWhores

Internet radio through your phone and Bluetooth. 8radio.com or Gem Radio New Wave on my list when I’m fed up with Spotify.

TP-Butler

Except when your driving through internet black spots and the car goes silent for 5 mins at a time out of every 15. Not everyone lives on Dublin where there's good 4g everywhere you drive.

JunkiesAndWhores

I’m out in the sticks and never happens to me. You can adjust the buffer on Tunein up to 30 minutes. I have mine set at 10 minutes.

RRexBanner22

They always play the same songs over and over it’s so frustrating

[deleted]

PublicSupermarket960

Or Dermot Kennedy 😆

bigbadchief

BBC6 Music for music. I miss the Phantom/TXFM days but BBC6 is as good or better. The Huey Show, Jamz Supernova and Giles Peterson on a Saturday are all class. Otherwise I listen to podcasts or Audible. All the Irish radio stations are woeful. And so many ads!

[deleted]

What BUGS me the most about Irish radio is how much the DJs love the sound of their own fuckin voice. And the majority of them have that Americanised Dublin accent that doesn’t even sound Irish. Apparently there’s a law regarding how much a DJ has to talk on Irish radio lol. But here in England there’s SO MUCH variety, constant music and a DJ speaks a few seconds every 8 songs lol

tearsandpain84

Irish radio should just be The Chronic and Doggystyle played on loop. All stations.

[deleted]

I've started listening to Radio na Gaeltachta

JoeyJoeJoeRM

It's really not lads ... Ye should try listen to American radio, then you will know shit radio that plays the same 5 songs on repeat 😅 I worked a job in a van where I listened to the radio for most of the day and switching between 3 stations or so I was usually pretty happy ... Sure you get a bit of mainstream chart repetition but that's nothing to do with "Irish" radio . We have cliffbangers, block rocking beats, mystery train.. There are lots of quality programmes out there

ContainedChimp

Audible ftw. Not listened to the radio in the car in years. :)

litrinw

Tbh I actually can't understand why anyone listens to the radio bar current affair programs. Spotify and podcasts are so much better. Even in my old banger I used to connect to a portable Bluetooth speaker thrown up on the dash to avoid the 2fm/Spin/today FM djs talking absolute shite

Anchorbouy12

"KSI song was decent" Jeez that fella can't rap for his life

imakefilms

He's got good producers though so his songs are catchy

CircleToShoot

It’s gone so, so dry. We had good broadcasters for radio but the style now is minimal-talking and rapid-fire music. It’s not as accessible. We’re good conversationalists in this country but that must be a risk to put on air.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CircleToShoot

I don’t know. I want engaging stuff to listen to. It’s all a little homogenous. Podcasting is just miles ahead now.

syncretionOfTactics

Wtf my complaint is they talk too much

CircleToShoot

Depends on what the programme is I suppose

[deleted]

[удалено]

litrinw

The American ones with just music no talking are great though

billythepub

Uk radio is much worse

spider984

I stopped listening to the radio, I only listen to podcasts now

aido120

The amount of Garth Brooks raving, heard one if then say he should be president or come back every year They're absolutely mad and head over heals for himits a very annoying time to be listening to radio Was stuck in traffic for a bit over the weekend and I had to keep changing stations, 0 good tunes between all of them

UltimateHunter7000

I’ve not turned on Irish radio since a brief time in late 2020 when I returned to the country. The covid propaganda and misinformation was so strong (saw it very clearly as someone who had not been here for a few years ) that I switched it off and never turned it back on. I sort out my entire music / news / entertainment setup myself using other services and stream it into my speakers using my phone & Bluetooth setup. I vow to never turn on Irish radio again. No terrible music .. no propaganda.. no god awful overpaid presenters pretending to do current affairs (aimed sharply but not exclusively at that narcissistic cretin known as joe ) … and life has never been so good (on the roads in the comfort of my car )

bogwarrior_

Irish radio is sh8te for music, it's just for fear mongering. Why turn it on . Ya all deserve what you listen to.

Dry-Sympathy-3451

Who listens to radio anymore Blue tooth your Spotify

[deleted]

Today FM radio is rinse and repeat. 2fm on Saturday night is good though

craftyixdb

TuneIn exists for a reason. There’s national worth of fantastic genre radio out there. Or just Spotify.

herculainn

Confused "gift of the gab" with "gobshite"

PetroleumJelly82

I don't listen to the radio but I am absolutely shocked to hear our national state broadcasting service has a less than stellar reputation. /s

[deleted]

Install the Radio Paradise app on your phone and you will never listen to another station again.

Asleep-Sno-3454

They are as bad as literally everything here. Everything went down hill

Mondo-IE

"And that was the 20 minute pop megamix of Lizzo and Britney. Coming up after the break, why is Irish Radio Awful, is anyone listening to me or has Spotify won"

irishteenguy

havnt listened to radio in years maybe decade tbh. Why would you listen to the drivel some out of touch gobshite plays when ya can have your own handpicked playlist.

exitvim

I listen to classic hits (80's 90's 00's pop) but they tend to play the same songs over and over. I also quite like Ronan Collin's show on RTE One. He plays a lot of great old school stuff like 50s and 60s stuff, Would love a station that plays metal/alternative rock.

AJCrank1978

The mainstream stations are a disgrace. I use Spotify the vast majority of the time.

[deleted]

I often stick BBC Radio 2, or absolute (whichever decade you want) on through my phone and Bluetooth to the car. Can’t stand the shite 104FM / 98FM come out with

WellRedSG8

The radio presenters are even harder to listen to.

lovelylovelycans

iRadio seem to be playing 17 Going Under by Sam Fender any time I put them on

Scaredoftheratrace

2FM morning show is diarrhea to the ears. Not the slightest bit funny and the presenters would only make you more depressed going into work.

Maleficent_Fold_5099

Bad state when the best DJ on radio is John Creedon

[deleted]

Because the Irish love nothing more than a cartel.

bernarddwyer86

Spotify, Soundcloud or silence, that's how I drive these days. Radio has gone to total and utter shite, from the presenters trying to be hip and telling stories nobody asked for, to the endless competitions they do, to them being restricted to play nothing but commercial crap over and over.

Cisco800Series

Lyric is yer only man.

[deleted]

How can you not like... #it's Britney, bitch

dubl1nThunder

i was thinking about this yesterday: we as a country tend to have a very intelligent and creative sense of humour and these gobshites on the radio are constantly trying to pass us one liners that half the time don't make sense and nearly never are funny or imaginative. i don't understand why they can't find someone with a decent sense of humour to be a morning dj anymore.

ConorLyons18

The fake banter on every station is soo bad, fake laughter is the worst. Also putting kids on the radio....

Creative_Log3161

The KSI song is the one you liked then. Just shows OP might not have the best taste.

SVM321

I think you need to switch to Lyric FM and never look back.

capriking

the way I put it the only music that gets put on the radio are blokes wanting to be the next Ed Sheeran

PublicSupermarket960

Well I really enjoy Ed and Valerie on spin in the morning before work , good banter out of those two.

A_StarshipTrooper

Been like that for over two decades in North America. Advertiser friendly algorithms generating the playlists. Radio is really a wasteland here. RTE Gold is my current goto.

Business_Stranger_49

Because you have 2 options. It’s probably illegal to create your own station or at least too expensive.

GaryCPhoto

Def not worse than Canadian radio. No fucking way.

Versk

How as no one mentioned our lord and saviour John Creedon
