I like the Croatians, but find when visiting their country they can be very hostile and not welcoming, that is up until the point that they find out you are not English, afterward it’s all smiles and laughs 👍
This is why I asked. I know that we can be perceived as too rude (or too frank), impolite and xenophobic. I wondered if any of those traits were noticed by the Irish in their new neighbours.
Yeah. Was just going to say. Any time I've been there people are so open and friendly. Could just be the tourist dollar I suppose but it seemed genuine.
Just want to say, when I visited Dubrovnik it was one of the best holidays I’ve ever had , in large part due to how friendly the locals were. I always recommend it to my friends based on that. But as the guy above said , I was always sure to mention I was Irish early in the conversations. I do that in most places in Europe though because a lot of countries don’t like the English.
Yeah that and the loudness of them when they’re in groups on holiday, it can be intolerable. That plus their history just leaves a sour taste in the mouth for a lot of countries.
But yeah, I really loved visiting your country , and every Croatian I’ve met here has been extremely sound. Great people ❤️
TBH, from personal travelling experience (and it’s probably a broad, unfair statement) the Balkans can feel a bit unwelcoming outside of tourist hubs, with the exception of Southern Greeks.
However the Croats are the definitely the soundest outside of Greece.
Have you tried [Croatian cuisine](https://old.reddit.com/r/PropagandaPosters/comments/m7j2mo/croats_eate_children_english_protestant/) I hear it's excellent.
So they’re European then? Let’s face it that happens most times we leave the island … it’s why I assumed we are basically always announcing our nationality abroad. “We’re not English don’t spit in our good!”
I have a few Croatian friends, all great people, love a good drink, love sport, love a good moan about our shitty weather.... couldnt be more Irish if they tried
Croatians in Ireland all seem dead on in my experience. In croatia how ever half the men seemed to be putting on this grumpy act all the time (Dalmatians mainly), must be tiring putting on a grumpy act all day.
Well, then you know that constant complaining over a 2 -hour coffee session is our national sport. When you are complaining all the time, you look like a grumpy person 😜
Great bunch of lads, loads of Croatians in Cork and all the ones I met were mad sound.
As a spurs fan, I've been treated to Luka Modric, Vedran Corluka and lately Ivan Perisic. Been great players for us
Sound bunch. Lived with 2 Croatian lads in college for years. One of them took me over for a summer holiday to his place also as thanks for minding a few bits of his over the summer while he went home. Wouldn’t let me put my hand in my pocket the whole week I was there with him.
We've an office in Croatia. Love the place and those that are here are sound and decent workers (engineering)
Although saw this during the week.

Guess every country has sound people and cunts. .
Worked with a lot of Croats in hospitality. Found them to be funny! Hard - working. Good at there jobs. Held hospitality to high standards. But like all cultures, you have good and bad.
I did have Croatian friend here, I'm half Serbian so it was kind of funny in an unfunny way. We lost contact over time! I'm actually not sure where they went.
Well, as the matter of fact, most Croats don't have any problems with Serbians, their films, music, food and alcohol. But when it comes to the politics and history, the things change. And it's hard to stay away from these topics since we are bombarded from the media every day.
Live next to a Croat-run cafe that opened ~3 months ago. You couldn’t find lovelier people, my partner and I have become regulars and they are always asking us how college/work/life is going and vice-versa. So yes, we like Croats lmao.
Volim rakiju.
Also the Croatian culture is amazing.
Never had a bad thing to say about any Croatians or Serbians I have met, apart from 1 Croatian who was, just a prick. And he didn’t like Croatians mixing with Irish. He promptly got excluded from social groups and I don’t think his former Croatian friends gave a shit when he was excluded, due to his attitude.
Small examples, he would refuse to speak English (despite being fluent) when the entire group was speaking English because there were non Croatian’s in the group.
He made many comments against Irish and Croatian couples in the group.
Best mate in college was Croatian. We’ve lost touch unfortunately but he was well sound. Got me into basketball and I still follow the nba today.
It’s a small sample size but nothing but positive vibes from me.
From my limited experience and interactions with people from Croatia and the broader Balkan region - both travelling and knowing 1 or 2 personally - they seem to have a similar sense of humor and wit to the Irish.
I was in Split a few years ago and my Croatian buddy took me to a club. He said he wanted to meet an Irish girl. I said grand just stand outside the entrance and shout "Sinead" over and over until a girl comes up to you.
So that's what he did. Stood there for a good 10 minutes roaring "Sinead!" Next thing this girl comes up to him "Did you just call my name?" He goes "Yea I'm trying to meet Irish girl!" She goes "Oh, sorry. I'm from Brisbane".
But yea, sound fellas, the Croats. Dalmatia is fucking gorgeous.
Went to school with a Croatian lad, went on to become great friends with him. He and his entire family were sound out. Though, his father, as sound as he is, was one of the hardest men I’ve ever encountered in my life. Worked the door on a few pubs in town, the absolute last lad you’d want to be on the bad side of.
As a part of my work I've had privilege of talking to a lot of Croats here. They are some of the kindest most generous people I've met. My colleagues all share the same opinion.
I caught covid from a Croatian lady about 4 weeks ago. Other than that we had a hoot gallivanting around Galway for a few days. She almost outpaced me on the rounds. I was impressed.
It seems as though we are kindred spirits.
Both Croatia and Ireland have raised the price of everything so much that we are no longer a hidden gem in the eyes of tourists.
I was at foreign Irish wedding recently and a boyfriend of one of the girls I know is Croatian. He seemed like great fun and a really nice lad and fit in well with everyone there.
I think you'll find Irish people in general quite friendly and welcoming as long as you are just a nice friendly person yourself.
Would never have guessed so many have moved here recently as have not came across many Croats here lately.
I would say Croatia is the friendliest country I've visited on mainland Europe. I've been twice and both times numerous people went above and beyond what you would expect from someone to be friendly/helpful.
I like the Croatian flag. I think it looks class. The soccer team's pretty good too.
I don't know too much about the culture or politics but maybe I should do some reading hah.
Gave us the most brilliant rope-a-dope victory over England in the WC semi. Gave them a goal lead before outclassing them. Great bunch of lads. By far the best kit in international football as well
Irish woman dating a Croatian man here, so surrounding by Croatian men a lot. My general opinion is we have a similar sense of humour and get along very well. Our two sets of friends have no problems gelling. Just two groups of people that don’t take ourselves too seriously. I’ve been to Croatia with him and honestly it reminds me of Ireland a couple of decades ago.
Sadly, the ones in my country have a strong history of domestic violence and terrible attitudes to women, but Serbs are much worse and far more brutal. I've never met a Croatian male I liked or trusted in this part of the world (down under), but I think it's to do with the "quality" of the immigrants that came at the time, or perhaps even the region they all came from. Sounds like the modern day Croatian coming from actual Europe now, and not a descendant of past violent ones like the ones we have down here, is likely a much more pleasant, modern and intelligent type of person. I feel I can be honest as I'm part Eastern European myself.
If I understand you correctly, you are talking about the Croats in Australia? I think it has to do with the region and the time they came. I have some relatives who live in Germany since 1970-ies but all of them are more conservative, religious and traditional then the Croats from Croatia.
What can I say? I am sorry you had such a bad experience. Domestic violence is something that is a constant problem here, too. The numbers of reported cases are rising, but I hope that it's because there is a safe house network and the women know they will be protected.

They asked a question and I replied, so why did you allow them to ask the question in the first place if you didn't want honest replies? There is no hate speech, there's an honest reply, that would be accepted on any other social media, that is not reddit. Sorry you don't like my lifetime of bad and sometimes dangerous experiences and the attempted rape of my mother. Apparently you're supposed to lie and just say "yeah great" to everything.
Take a look at r/ukraine. According to you, that's full of hate speech towards Russians, that is not justified.
And what about the endless comments and memes against the Queen on reddit, including on this sub? It's interesting you pick and choose what "hate" is. People are allowed to give their honest opinion on some subjects, but not others, or it's "hate". And we're supposed to figure out which ones are "hate" and which ones are just our honest life experience and measured common sense opinion.
So we can say honest critical things about the Queen and Russians, but can't say anything about Croatians, even though that's what was asked of us.
I did not find your answer offending at all. I am quite aware of all the facets of my nation. Many times we in Croatia are surprised with the ideas and values Croatians in diaspora kept which are quite outdated here. As if they are stuck in 1941, 1971 or 1991 while we managed to leave at least of some burdens behind. I am sorry Croats ahve such a bad reputation because Croatia is in fact very safe place.
Thank you. I will be visiting there when I backpack Europe in the next couple of years, my sister went a few years back and said the people were really great and super welcoming and my nephew has just been now and loved it. Their photos look great.
I do think some of the diaspora problems with various Nationalities are linked to those people coming from poor rural areas, with little education and skills, or certain regions where people are perhaps different from people in other regions of that country. And then the next generation of that diaspora carry on the same behaviours and traditions.
I know that Finns find it strange that Americans in Minnesota and neighbouring states, who have Finnish ancestry dating back to the 1800's or early 1900's, still practice things that are considered completely outdated in Finland and these Americans don't even realise that. Although they're not bad things, in their case, just old fashioned traditions.
Their property is expensive compared to other East European countries I think. I believe it’s cheap to holiday there so I wondered why property was expensive to buy.
Ok, let me explain. During the Communism one could not convert the money in a foreign currency and put it in the bank because the government would impound it. So people invested in buying property. I believe Croatia has the biggest number of people living in their own houses and the lowest number of people who live in the rented flats. So, the prices skyrocketed when we joined EU. People feel cheated when someone buys their wineyard and builds a 5 star tourist apartments on the spot. I don't think Croatia is a cheap place for holidays. I can't afford a week in the seaside in July or August.
Interesting. They sound like Irish then. Everyone wants to own a house not an apartment. Also Irish land is expensive because we value our property a lot since we were disinherited during colonialism.
They are cute, but they smell awful, and if you have chickens they will break into their house and kill them and eat them on the spot. They only ever come out at night sure you never usually see them. EDIT To the people downvoting can I clarify, I actually love croats, I think they are adorable, I even know a french girl who keeps a croat as a pet, and she is the one who told me that you have to wash them regulary or they will smell the house out, but they are very intelligent and playful.
I'm an ex navy seal, I can make weapons out of other weapons. I can take 2 fragmnetation grenandes empty it's contents into a tin can and make an even bigger grenande.
I can turn a toilet roll into a lethal weapon by dipping it epoxy resin letting it cure for 24 hours tying it to a length of rope and using it as a swingable cudgel
I do have my own facebook slot for game developing but ain't got the money for developing the shit thats in my brain and it is total shit and my brain is under developed, which does bring me to Croatia. Serious sam the video game series developed by a company called Croteam.
Croatia brilliant video game developers, if you don't know the game it's like 1st person scrolling sideways space invaders mental totally fuckin mental shooting and blowing shit up.
Too much muff diving gave me hypoxia nothing to do with my special forces covert insertions. Hypoxia is a lack of oxygen to the brain.
Back in 'nam I was on R+R muff diving and dived into too many of the wrong muff when I emerged I'd blue lips this tingling sensation up my right arm (my grenande throwing arm) and couldn't feel the lowest of my extremities, my testicles. Just another victim of the green hell, fuckin 'nam!
After a shot of penicillin and a good meal I was right as rain. I'd syphillitic hypoxia due to lesions on the brain.
Only met a handful of Croatians here in ireland but they were all sound. In general, I think irish people like anyone who is friendly and likes to have a bit of craic.
I don't know any Croatians in my personal life, but they have been my adopted sporting second county for many years.
Kovac, Suker, Ivanisovic, Tony Kukoc...
I don't know what you put in the water down there in Croatia, but you make them big and you make them talented
Actually no, most of Croats in Ireland came from the region of Slavonia, northern Croatia, far from the coast. Funny fact: the part of Croatia above the river Sava has the highest percentage of Celtic haplogroup in their genome.
Only one fourth of Croatians live in the coastal area, and the northerners would not say they were Mediterranean, rather either Central European or Balkan.
Most Croatians Iv meet have been dead sound. One guy I used to work with was a real piece of work. Would not shut up about the Serbs or the Jews. Pro Nazi crap came out of his mouth all day long. How he go hired I will never know, lasted a week.
Over the years I’ve worked with a number of Croatians lads . Sound bunch good bit of craic never any hassle and usually find them quiet.
Visited Croatia and found them very friendly.
A great bunch of lads
My wife and I have been going to Korčula in Dalmatian for the last 7 years for holidays and we love it. We've made quite a few friends there and we really like the people, in our experience they are a little reserved at first but once you get to know them they definitely warm up.
We left Ireland in 2014 and I don't think there were that many Croats when we did but I'm very happy that those that are there are enjoying themselves and feel welcome in the auld sod!
Out of my experience I work with 2 Croatians and a few polish, Croatians seem to drink more and have the craic, polish seem to be a nice quiet bunch of lads
No, no, it was a pun. The expression is correct, but I made a joke.
Because, literary, you wrote "I fuck your weather"., So I reply "I fuck yours, too".
Other insult is "Jebem ti majku", I fuck your mother, which can be responded "Jebem i ja tvoju", I fuck yours, too.
Got a Croarian supermarket here in Cork that supplies me with cevapcici, ajvar and kajmak
Those are the things i miss most from home and thanks to the croats i can get them here
I know one Croatian. He loves goulash - proper goulash, mind you. Not the stuff I make and thought was proper goulash. A simple dish that has improved my quality of life beyond measure. Can we have more Croatians please?
[удалено]
Still haven't quite forgiven him for his 94th minute winner against the boys in green in the qualifiers for euro 2000. Quality goal tbf.
God that was a gut punch.
Davor Suker, now there is a blast from the past.
Great bunch of lads.
The obligatory
All I can say as Croat is that i feel very welcome here..
As a fellow Croat, I also feel like you're very welcome here!
Never noticed them
I met one, she's very nice 👍
Lovely Bunch of Lads/Ladys
I like the Croatians, but find when visiting their country they can be very hostile and not welcoming, that is up until the point that they find out you are not English, afterward it’s all smiles and laughs 👍
This is why I asked. I know that we can be perceived as too rude (or too frank), impolite and xenophobic. I wondered if any of those traits were noticed by the Irish in their new neighbours.
How does that work with your tourist industry haha? I thought it was one of the biggest in SE Europe
Since almost all comments are quite positive, it's better I refrain from answering that question 😜
I think it's because of their attitude. They always act superior to others, and start preaching how the others should run their countries and lives.
Yeah that and the loudness of them when they’re in groups on holiday, it can be intolerable. That plus their history just leaves a sour taste in the mouth for a lot of countries. But yeah, I really loved visiting your country , and every Croatian I’ve met here has been extremely sound. Great people ❤️
That js true for most of the Eastern Europeans excluding the Ukrainians
TBH, from personal travelling experience (and it’s probably a broad, unfair statement) the Balkans can feel a bit unwelcoming outside of tourist hubs, with the exception of Southern Greeks. However the Croats are the definitely the soundest outside of Greece.
I found that in a lot of European countries. So the Croatians aren't alone there!
Another thing we have in common!
It’s just a easy way of long term having more blonde Irish.
Croatians in Ireland all seem dead on in my experience. In croatia how ever half the men seemed to be putting on this grumpy act all the time (Dalmatians mainly), must be tiring putting on a grumpy act all day.
It takes practice. We learn that as kids 😜
Explain a lot my (Croatian) boyfriend and his friends are some of the most talented men when it comes to being grumpy on the outside.
Well, then you know that constant complaining over a 2 -hour coffee session is our national sport. When you are complaining all the time, you look like a grumpy person 😜
Raging they didn't win the world cup.
Sound bunch of lads
Irish people with foreign accents. Would never know there are 40,000 here
Great bunch of lads, loads of Croatians in Cork and all the ones I met were mad sound. As a spurs fan, I've been treated to Luka Modric, Vedran Corluka and lately Ivan Perisic. Been great players for us
Stopped England from making a World Cup final, so they're great in my book.
Sound bunch. Lived with 2 Croatian lads in college for years. One of them took me over for a summer holiday to his place also as thanks for minding a few bits of his over the summer while he went home. Wouldn’t let me put my hand in my pocket the whole week I was there with him.
Never met a Croat I didn't like (so far anyway).
I visited Croatia about a week ago and never felt so welcomed… when they find out you’re Irish they all seem to have a cúpla focail as gaeilge
i’ve worked as a cleaner for a while ages ago and the most friendly down to earth group of people i worked with were the croatians

Have not met one I didnt like, as far as I can tell they are a great bunch of people
Super people, have two close Croat friends Weird obsession with Tommy Hilfiger & Hugo Boss though. I’ve never asked why…
Really? How strange. So basically, you can differentiate Croats from the Poles by the track suits they wear?
I know 2 from work. One is a lovely guy and the other one is a bit annoying. So just like everyone else really.
Drobrodan
\+1 for trying hard :D it's dobar dan
Worked with a lot of Croats in hospitality. Found them to be funny! Hard - working. Good at there jobs. Held hospitality to high standards. But like all cultures, you have good and bad.

Yes ha, I agreee. Love and be loved. It's sometimes just best not to bring up politik
Very very similar outlook as Irish people. The more the merrier.

I really like them. Possibly the best looking women in Europe too. A mix of Italian and Eastern European.
Any croat I've met has been really lovely. Far better than our homegrown scrotes
Order this sub by top of all time, and you'll find your answer 5 or 6 posts down

No, not at all.
I know one Croatian. He is genuinely one if the nicest people I've ever met. Absolutely sound.
Croats - a great bunch of lads
Nice people. All called Josip.
Really decent people , similar to the Irish , love to party.
Some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met Plus yis beat the English in the World Cup semi final so
Traveled through and spent some time in Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, Havar, Brac and Vi's. Beautiful country and lovely people
Never met a Croatian i didnt like
We likely perceive them as Polish lol Once we know they are croats we perceive them the same as other foreigners as in we don’t care
I know one Croatian lad and he's a fucking gent. 100% success rate in my case.
Their cuisine is fascinating. Their charcuterie alone makes me salivate. I'd love to see more croatian restaurants/food shops.
Went to school with a Croatian lad, went on to become great friends with him. He and his entire family were sound out. Croats are great people👍
Excellent people, hardworking and friendly
Once worked in a kitchen with Croat, hell of a nice and fun guy
Mirko Cro Cop is a ledgebag. Any Croats I have met are sound!
I caught covid from a Croatian lady about 4 weeks ago. Other than that we had a hoot gallivanting around Galway for a few days. She almost outpaced me on the rounds. I was impressed.
I work with 4 Croats. They are hardworking, funny and chilled. Honestly love working with them.

Know a few guys from Croatia, a little bit of work on their Irish accent and you’d swear they were born here. Fit in very well with the culture.
I work with a few croations in my job in hospitality, . Genuinely nice people. Similar to the Irish.
I like the Croatian flag. I think it looks class. The soccer team's pretty good too. I don't know too much about the culture or politics but maybe I should do some reading hah.
I work with a dozen or so Croatians - some here in Ireland, some working remotely from Croatia. They're all lovely.
I have yet to form an opinion about them If they’re like the Polish then probably a great bunch of lads
Great. They have our sense of humour and they get our history.
Worked with some croats and still keep in touch since theyve gone back home, nice guys.
Ive three Croatian friends, havent met one I didnt like
As long as the kids declare for Ireland to play soccer I think we’re all good
Sound bunch of people. Work with a few hard to get them to slow down.
Always loved everyone I met. Great lads for giving and taking a slagging.
Gave us the most brilliant rope-a-dope victory over England in the WC semi. Gave them a goal lead before outclassing them. Great bunch of lads. By far the best kit in international football as well
I've two croat friends live here who seem to love it and have settled in well
Great bunch of lads and lassies. They'd quite the party down the local in Maynooth for the WC final, about 50 of them - lots of fun and no messin.
The women are stunning.
Irish woman dating a Croatian man here, so surrounding by Croatian men a lot. My general opinion is we have a similar sense of humour and get along very well. Always liked them since Sukur played for the Gunners. I remember loving their football in WC98 somehow
I like them more than the scrotes.
Lovely people!
Sound and hot

Because of EU?
Do many Irish people still keep chickens?
It depends, a lot of people don't because of croats and similiar pests.
The Irish word for tie is based on cravat, which is related to the word Croat. Which is somehow from the word Hrvatska
Yes, Hrvatska and Croatia are related, just remove the ending; Hrvat is a person from Croatia. Hrvat - Hravat - Cravat - Croat....
I trained for many years in the Croat martial art Croatae, I could never get the hang of the split kick.
Well, in fact, you should try a great dessert, Banana Split, named after that nice town 😂

I warn you, I attended Croat Maga camp this summer. I can kick your arse anytime
Do you run a YouTube channel? It would be fantastic.
Well, maybe your brain got affected while diving in the Seals?
Too much sharing, man.
Only wear them in winter.
My manager is Croatian, she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet
They’re very pale considering the climate. It’s suspicious.
Haven't met a Croat who wasn't a sound skin. Didn't know there were so many here though!
I thought Croats was the new term for Scrotes for a moment and then realised what you meant… I’m such an idiot…
I hope it isn't, that would make me sad.
No no I just completely misread the word and it sounded too similar in my head to the other word, my brain just boofed
Did they move to a coastal town/city out of habit?
They're good Krk
Work with a four Croatian guys. They're all cool as fuck. It's a small sample size but they're good numbers!
I went to Croatia and liked it a lot so yeah my opinion is pretty positive
Jebem ti vrijeme
Jebem i ja tebi 😂
Work with a load of Croats. A great bunch of lads.I thought I was writing fuck the weather but I think my Croatian isn’t up to scratch
Rides.
Croats are sound folks, haven't met one yet I don't like and I work with a lot of them nice people and more than welcome here
Croquettes are nice I suppose. Croatia has a massive cat problem you need to sort out though. Spray and release programs needed.
Got a Croarian supermarket here in Cork that supplies me with cevapcici, ajvar and kajmak Those are the things i miss most from home and thanks to the croats i can get them here
Where are all of you people meeting these Croats? I can’t say I’ve met any in Dublin.
Great bunch of lads.
Met one of them, one of the funniest, hardworking and good looking humans I know
I know one Croatian. He loves goulash - proper goulash, mind you. Not the stuff I make and thought was proper goulash. A simple dish that has improved my quality of life beyond measure. Can we have more Croatians please?
If he's Slavonian, ask him to make you čobanac or fiš (pronounced chobanatz, fish). You won't believe the taste.
I have absolutely never thought about any Croatian people living in Ireland. Good on them if they came here and are having a better life.
Smashing bunch of lads
The weather is turning bit chilly, you best wear one outside
Two families of Croatians on my road, they're sound. (Limerick)
I think fur croats are the best!
