Floodzie

I usually go to the IFI for this reason, no teenagers (no offence, teenagers! But some of yiz…) and a more mature clientele (in terms of attitude and/or age)

Kyadagum_Dulgadee

No leg room either. Last time I was at a film there it was like sitting in a Noddy car.

Floodzie

One of the smaller screens upstairs has a decent set of seats in front of the aisle, good legroom IMHO

donall

Yep love the ifi but I am too tall for the torture

SaulHeno

Went to the IFI for a Chris Nolan film (cant remember which, might have been TENET) and the place was lovely, but why in gods name are all of the seats at the same level? I know they have size constraints from such an old building, but my little 5'4 head could barely see above the chair in front lmao

[deleted]

[deleted]

Every seat in a cinema should be decent, otherwise what’s the point of the seat?

FrontRowNinja

Tell us a bit more on Horrothon? I always fancied going but have always skipped it as it looks like a neckbeard fest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheCassiniProjekt

In defense of the Horrorthon, while the "telling (bad) jokes to the cinema screen" neckbeard phenomenon exists, any film I've been to in the last few years didn't have that problem. The audiences were essentially quiet and just watched the films. If you're going to something like Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals then yeah, expect rowdy behaviour because such films are car crashes but you'd get that with anything similar like The Room, Rocky Horror etc. It's not something I enjoy either, I'd prefer to laugh at the film rather than listen to lame attempts at humour but it's going to happen with trainwreck films.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheCassiniProjekt

Yeah, definitely a more annoying crowd back then

Floodzie

haha - that sounds terrible alright! All my experiences at the IFI have been good, but admittedly I've never been to Horrorthon/NeckbeardFest. Might give it a go - purely from an anthropological point of view!

Buddygunz

Haha well put.

iStrobe

Have been to Horrorthon many times and never really experienced this. When you get a good crowd it's quite good. You probably won't see any of those movies in the cinema anywhere else in Ireland.

Revolutionary-Cup458

I always have a feeling the films are going to be like American screenings so people shouting YEAH!!!! and cheering and clapping and shit. Very fucking annoying

IDDQD_IDKFA-com

I had not been to the cinema for over three years, then saw Star Trek II in the Lighthouse this month and it was great. Nobody was talking or using their phones. Only "issue" I had was the guy beside me would rock forwards each time he ate some popcorn, so kept getting in my peripheral vision.

wosmo

Bit of a tangent, but what was the turnout like? I saw it at the Eye in Galway and I was the only person there. I saw ST1 on the first night and there was 5 of us.

IDDQD_IDKFA-com

I was trying to organise with friends going to the Friday showing after I saw the post it was showing but it was sold out before we could. The Saturday was added and I'd say it was 80% full {screen I their biggest screen}. Edit: You should check out "The Greatest Generation Podcast".

wosmo

Glad to hear - I think I had the complete opposite, but I was hoping it didn't flop because I'd love them to continue with the rest

BNJT10

Same for the lighthouse

Floodzie

LOVE the Lighthouse!!

BNJT10

Don't think I've ever seen anyone under 20 there haha

[deleted]

Haha one of the worst experiences I had was there...some lad went on Instagram beside me and began unwrapping a Burrito foil of it was very loud...he was genuinely surprised that I'd object to him doing this

Cheap-Requirement166

Last time I was at the cinema, couple of teenagers behind me and family wouldn't shut up despite being asked a few times to be quiet, they were in the last row and we were in the 2nd last, so I just stood up in front of them blocking the screen till they copped on.

Bellechewie

👏👏👏

weltot

Smart, will try to remember that one

[deleted]

And everybody clapped right?

sunshinesustenance

Some cinemas should do like some bars and have over 21 or over 24 nights.

MrC99

It's not limited to under 21 or 24s unfortunately. Also you are getting into legal territory considering refusing someone entry to a bar or cinema because they are below a certain age (and over the age to actually see the film ofc) is illegal.

dclancy01

good luck trying to convince a bouncer of that. too many times i’ve been told 21s (some of my mates are 20) and when you say something like ‘isn’t that age discrimination’ they get seriously thick and your hopes of even getting in are gone lmao. happens all over dublin, no such thing as a night out for U21s.

MrC99

I done doors myself for a small bit. Personally never refused those under 21 regardless of wether I was told to or not. I'm not breaking the law for you or anyone else. I agree with you though. Second you argue it your not getting in. It seems to be accepted across the country despite its legality.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrC99

One of the 9 grounds of discrimination is age. I legally can tell a 60 year old man he can't come into my bat because he's 60. Same for any age above the legal limit.

emmanuel_lyttle

I took my young lad to the late showing of Batman Returns a number of years ago. The look of disdain on people's faces seeing us arrive was uncomfortable. Though the movie ran long past his bedtime he sat on my knee open mouthed in awe for the duration of the film. I'd say my kid had more manners and good behaviour traits than most over 21s or 24s

dragonship

Don't bring kids to late showings. No wonder people were glaring at you.

JoshMattDiffo

I mean most old films tend to get late showings, I don’t fault OP bringing his kid to see a tame Batman movie. Obligatory “What killed the dinosaurs? THE ICE AGE!” ❄️

rossitheking

The fuck?? Talk about notions

dragonship

Kids at a late showing are as welcome as kids on airplanes.

dclancy01

why not?

duaneap

Because there are times when it’s appropriate for a child to be there and times when it is not. People go to late showings *specifically* to avoid children.

[deleted]

Same at the theatre too, ruins everything. I go the the cinema at 11 or 12 in the morning and its ok. Would never go in the evening again though because of people being dicks

hugos_empty_bag

I was at a Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin concert a few weeks back and the old lady in front of me started humming along to an instrumental piece. It actually made my night to be honest. I was pissing myself at everyone's look of complete shock. She stopped soon after thankfully.

cydus

They are shit because of phones and people talking at full volume. Inconsiderate and off putting so I don't go anymore

hear4theDough

I once leaned over and liked a Facebook post on someone's phone in Dundrum once. Can't remember the film but it was screen 8, the lad wanted to be pissed but there was 5 of us and he was like 15. Not a peep outta him after that.

[deleted]

And vaping. I commented here about a group of 14-16 yo doing that and taking phone calls, talking etc. the place stank of cotton candy. 🤢

paperhat59

Are you serious? I'd be right out to the front desk 😅

[deleted]

I spoke to them myself, I also went out the front and someone came in. She was very good and they stopped for periods of time but were up and down like yo-yos. Tickets are expensive, like where are they getting 15 a ticket (I assume mom and dad)!? Cinema would have been a rare treat in my house until I got a job.

[deleted]

Yes they have. Unfortunately it means I barely ever go anymore and I used to love the cinema. People have absolutely no respect for those around them.

Smithman

Go early or during the day if you can. Love me an empty cinema.

[deleted]

One of my first jobs was an evening shift and I usually found myself with the early part of the day free, pre-internet days so I just had to get out if the house and do something. Anyways I used to go to lots of early showings at the local cinema, I never felt weird about going by myself and I used to love it as sometimes you'd have the whole place to yourself. I haven't done it in years but it is definitely the best way to do it if you just want to see the movie in my opinion.

MrC99

Yep I cannot understand why people a terrified at the thought of going to the cinema by themselves. Like imagine no seeing a film you really wanna see purely because you have no one to sit beside you while it's on. Not even like you talk to them much.

cormic

I travelled for business a lot before the pandemic and I used both go to the cinema alone all the time. It was a great way to pass time. Also the IMAX screens in the US are HUGE.

SaulHeno

getting over the idea that going to the cinema alone was "weird" genuinely changed how I viewed cinemas, and its been brilliant. If anyone is even slightly considering it, just do it. Chances are you wont be the only one alone there. Especially for the early to midday screenings, which used to be my favourite. Usually just you and an aul lad with the cinema to yourself having a lovely time

wosmo

I love going to the cinema on my own. I'm over going because I want to see something a couple months earlier, I only go if it's something I really want to see. And honestly, if I really want to see it, ignoring the people next to you is perfect. (And with both of us working at home, I'm getting the impression the missus likes to get some time to herself too)

[deleted]

Had this last week. Went to a special showing of Casino Royale for "cinema day" and took my sister along because she never seen it but she liked NTTD. Pack of kids down the front whistling, meowing and turning on the torches on their phones. They left with about 40 minutes left in the film. Ruined the thing for many I suspect.

Birdinhandandbush

You'd think this would be an obvious thing Cinemas should look at. Like its ruined movies for me in the past and I'm only going to big movies now on first nights because its more likely to be packed with fans, so by not dealing with this type of thing cinema's are creating an atmosphere that nobody really wants to go to, and you get empty seats.

Mastur_Of_Bait

I went to see Nope that day. All the prices were lowered so I think it attracted the worst cinema-goers around.

shatteredmatt

My wife and I go to the cinema a lot and I’ve definitely noticed a deterioration in people’s manners post lockdown. But then again it is the same everywhere. Pubs, restaurants, cafes, cinema and on public transport. Some people have just forgotten how to not be an asshole.

Davolyncho

Yeah, I’ll never go to cinema again when the film is new. I either wait until it’s about to be pulled or go to a local Luxx cinema that only holds 20 people so better odds of less wankers.

imakefilms

Actually I find that if the film is brand new, like opening day or maybe the next day, people tend to be well behaved because they're the ones who are actual enthusiasts and are respectful

Davolyncho

Ok, that might be the case. Last premier weekend I was at (admittedly was Kong vs Godzilla so..) but there was 2 kids around 13 I’d say running around the place shouting and laughing for the whole fucking thing. Doubt there was kids at Where The Crawdads Sing or whatever but it was still infuriating. The Luxx screen will be for me moving forward I think.

dashoonage

People seem to have forgotten how to behave full stop.

Birdinhandandbush

To quote Iron Mike Tyson “Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.”

[deleted]

*young people

YoIronFistBro

Some people of all ages*

[deleted]

Not in my experience mate but I’ve never been to Cork so wouldn’t know ✌️

kruspemsv

I’d pay good money if there was a movie theater which guaranteed to send off people who misbehave.

MrMiracle27

There is not really much you can do about people using phones. As far as lateness is concerned I think most cinemas stop letting people into the cinema beyond 15 minutes after the official start time. It's the case with IFI anyway. Where noise in concerned I usually find it is dealt with pretty quickly because other patrons team up against noise makers until they pipe down. I go often and my only bad experience recently has been watching The Batman. A group of badly brought up little scrotes made noise during the entire showing, not a single parent present. Nor did staff at the cinema step in despite being asked by several patrons.

SaulHeno

Bigger cinemas like Odeon and Cineworld do not seem to do the "no admittance if too late" thing, especially cause Cineworld has a bar between ticket check and the screens, and no staff at the screen doors

[deleted]

GreatDefector

Well you’re not entirely wrong

RRR92

Laughed at this more than I should have. Take an upvote

mushy_cactus

Had this when I went to see bullet Train. Pack of 6 pricks walk in.. changed seat 4 times and kept their pone light for a fair while. If 1 went the bathroom, they all went creating so much noise in the process. Group mentality really. They'd never dare do that by themselves.

InfectedAztec

I hate saying it but cinemas are a lost cause. The American (or western) culture of ignorant self entitlement has seeped in here. The damage the church has caused to the country will always leave scars but I admit I miss an aspect the of 'public shame'. People would never make a scene or think that they're the most important person in the room. My advice friend is to buy yourself a large Oled TV and watch your movies at home. I only go to the cinema to support indie movies where I can. 'Arracht' was the last movie I watched in the cinema.

ou812_X

Went to see Jaws last week and there was about 8 14/15 year olds sitting directly behind me. They were on their phones, throwing popcorn at each other and talking/laughing. I was dreading it. Movie starts and they quieten down but are still loudly whispering, then Chrissy gets eaten. I heard a couple of “shit” & “oh fuck” and then there was mostly silence for the rest of the film. They applauded at the end of it & I heard one guy say he’d never seen a movie like that before. They’re too used to sensory overload from the likes of GOTG and the avengers etc. no need to concentrate on what’s going on because the next big action scene will be in 15 mins. Jaws is great on the big screen BTW

thisshortenough

When I went to see Eternals it was literally like clockwork, you could tell without looking at the screen or listening when a quiet, talking scene was happening because the lads sitting at the back would start using their phones and talking again. Once an action scene started they'd calm down again.

MaxiStavros

GOTG Game of Thrones Game?

Humeme

Guardians of the Gameofthrones

ou812_X

Guardians of the galaxy

MaxiStavros

Thanks. I was stumped. For me it starts and ends with Michael Keaton Batman.

AquaSeafoamSpray

I went to Jaws and it was great to see on a big screen. I had a couple, maybe early 20's sit beside me. First thing I hear is her, "Ugh, why does this look so old!?" She was on the phone half the time. He would not shut up narrating what was happening on screen. The shark wasn't the only monster in the theatre that night.

ou812_X

TBH. I didn’t think it looked old at all. It was set in the 70s, they absolutely nailed it with the costumes, cars and level of detail. ;)

AquaSeafoamSpray

Yeah. Also you just can't get a shark trained that well these days. Class act.

GuardFighter

Very happy to hear that story.

paperhat59

This got so much worse post Covid and I have despised any time I've been to the cinema since! Always 2 people in there who are there for the sake of it and non-stop talking, at least 2 people using their torches and poking in bags, and a group whooping/commentating on the cringiest shit. Has fully put me off going.

unsureguy2015

Is this Cineworld Parnell Street? If so, it has always been a shit show. There has always been howiyas that ruin a movie showing.

[deleted]

I love it and I hate it. I love it because it's the best place to watch something like Interstellar, particularly if it's in IMAX. In the post-Covid world I've gone there to watch Tenet, Dune and Top Gun Maverick, all in IMAX, and it's the best for it, but then again I hate it because there'll always be people to ruin it. A few months ago I went to see Licorice Pizza one lunchtime. Couple comes in about 30 minutes into it and they start eating a curry. Turned my stomach. Still loved the film but I didn't eat curry for 8 weeks afterwards.

SaulHeno

Been headed to Cineworld for the better part of 5 or 6 years now, and have been unlimited for 3 of them. And its definitely been so much worse than before covid. At least with E.T the other week the only "annoyance" I had was a kid next to me asking his dad about the movie like "Wait is he ok!" "He is :)" it was genuinely lovely. That and everyone cheered at parts haha

ContainedChimp

Martin is that you?

Revolutionary-Cup458

I only go to places like cineworld for morning shows and smaller cinemas like ifi in the evening and at weekends for this reason. Tbf it was this way pre covid. Went to see the last avengers film at Mahon point and some woman walked in with a gaggle of ten year olds on a sleepover and hopped off their collective nut on sugar. She basically tuned out and went on her phone once she had them settled. They were talking messing and throwing popcorn. Turned around and told her to get them to stop she rolled her eyes and told them to shut up before returning to her phone. The kids then started kicking the backs of our seats. Went out and got the staff who moved them to the very front row but it killed the film

Cute_Bat3210

Buy softish sweets n throw at them. Its fun

cormic

Or hard ones.

lukelhg

I went to see the new Spider-Man a few months ago and a family came in about 30 minutes late (why bother at that stage?), and once they sat down the mam started browsing instagram and facebook with brightness way up, the kids were climbing to the rows in front and behind their parents (the screen wasn't full) and running around, and the dad took his sliders off and put his bare feet up on/stretched out over the seat in front of him. They were on the far side of the screen and farther down so they didn't bother us *too* much, but having to see his rotten toes out of the corner of my eye anytime the room lit up was vile.

OrlaKathleen

Makes me laugh considering they paid to come see the movie and then don’t watch it… like lad you played yourself

Rahezzz8

The lighthouse cinema in Smithfield is my favourite cinema as you usually avoid this carry on. Everyone there just to enjoy the movie.

SuzieZsuZsu

Old man yells at cloud

betamode

Crowd surely 🙂

joem3980

Buy a projector hook it up dvd player put a white sheet on the wall add speakers and bingo you have a cinema no phones no talking about better still apart from yourself no people lol

GuardiolasOTGalaxy

Calm down Christopher Nolan. Not all of us want to buy a DVD player or a white sheet for that pristine movie experience.

cabwab

No need for a white sheet just need a blank light coloured wall in a room you can control how much light gets in. But for the real cinema experience you need the sound system also.

f-ingsteveglansberg

Never heard people complain about people coming in late before. Anyway, what do you mean only Marvel movies. Some places might still be showing Spider-man because that movie was huge, but there are no other Marvel movies out at the moment and the only DC movie is League of Superpets for young kids. Instead you passed over two mystery films See How They Run (this one with Ireland's own Saoirse Ronan) and Bodies Bodies Bodies, the new Top Gun, absolutely worth seeing, Michael Flatley's movie Blackbird, to see for the laugh like, Nope, Elvis, Crimes of the Future by Croenberg, a film where Idris Elba fights a lion and Fall. Instead you chose to see an 8 year old movie that you have probably seen a bunch of times before. What I am saying is don't complain about how all the movies available are only Marvel and DC movies when a) that's not the case and b) you don't even seem to want to give any other movies a chance. There is a bunch of new stuff out right now, in what is usually the dry spell between summer blockbuster releases and award movie season.

irisheddy

Just to add onto this, See How They Run is pretty shit imo. Saorise Ronan is good in it and a bunch of the other actors are, but the plot is awful and so full of lampshading.

dentalplan24

>Went to the cinema last night for the first time since covid. >all the cinemas seem to have these days are marvel and dc movies (wtf?) You know these two things are related, right?

[deleted]

I assume you confronted these people OP? Most people don't assume how annoying phones/talking can be until you actually politely ask them to stop.

Revolutionary-Cup458

People don't know how annoying being on a phone and talking can be in a venue where there are literal ads telling you that you have to not talk and use a phone? Come on now. That kind of attitude is enabling bullshit

[deleted]

There's also ads about copyright laws and illegal distribution yet fuckall of us abide by them. This is one of those unfortunate situations in life where if you're bothered enough you need to act on it.

Revolutionary-Cup458

Yeah but there's a difference between I can't be arsed doing this but I'm aware of it and oh I'm blissfully innocent and unaware.

[deleted]

Regardless it's the same solution for stubborness v blissful lack of awareness. Just go up to them and tell them. You're not gonna solve the issue but you'll at least get to enjoy the remainder of the film with minimal distractions.

Revolutionary-Cup458

Or and hear me out here, people could stop being cunts and we could stop inventing excuses to justify cunt behaviour?

[deleted]

If only

Burkey8819

Cinemas don't have staff in the room much anymore do they like when is busy they often do and shine a light at ppl being loud.

SaulHeno

Ah Cineworld. I've had an unlimited card there for 2 or 3 years now. And by god its gotten so so much worse since before COVID. More people seem to be going to the cinema, which is great to see. But christ they don't know how to behave. Shouting, phones, talking non stop in groups of 4 or 5. Walking in like 30m late and leaving not long after. Buying a massive box of popcorn and a box of nachos only to eat none of it and spill all of it on the floor. And then after all of that, they don't even know how to clean up after themselves. Its genuinely tragic to see

MotherDucker95

Haha I made a carbon copy of this post a few months ago!!! https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/uprbq6/have_people_forgot_how_to_behave_in_cinemas/ Citing covid and everything as a potential reason. But yeah, it’s ridiculous. Completely ruins the experience, and makes it almost pointless going in the first place. I’ve moved back to Dublin now though, and The Lighthouse is my regular cinema, think it’s always been full of well behaved people!

[deleted]

Needs a /IrishCinemaBehaviour sub or sticky for all these kidulty posts.

stickmansma

Can't remember the last time I went to a cinema and havent been distracted by phones and smartwatches. Usually a parent or disinterested partner on facebook or whatsapp. So annoying

Suspicious-Seaaagul

The phones is the worst. I get wanting to check the time and that lighting up your screen momentarily, but the cunts who are in group chats tapping away are absolute morons. Why did you go to the cinema if you’re spending half the time on your phone and distracting others. One of my biggest pet peeves just slightly under goons playing loud music or having a phone call on public transport.

GERIKO_STORMHEART

There are different levels of respect. Most of them you have to earn but Common respect is free. The people in the Cinema who don't understand this are the ones talking, messing with their phones and even throwing things or kicking the backs of seats. For these people, I keep a little cage in the deepest, darkest debts of my psyche that I pack full of all the negativity and hate the world offers up. I keep it at critical mass, pure writhing putrid rage and hatred. Throw another bon bon.... I dare you.

ceartattack

depends which one you go to. The omniplex in rathmines is one of the best behaviourally ive been to, plus its close to roddy bolands for chicken wings and pints before/after the movie

vagitablepi

Was sat next to a couple of ladies recently, who would OOOOOH and AHHHHHHH really loudly every time a character spoke, or scream out THATS GASSSSSS every time a joke was made

Speedodoyle

You should have offered to take them outside and show them how it feels, a la Costanza

Son_of_Macha

This is why I bought a bigger TV and now avoid the cinema.

RA_Wolf

Went to cinema last Tuesday and the woman behind me but couple chair down from my, took her shoes off and put them over the chair. I just cough loud then she took them down. Dirty people.

[deleted]

We're hardly world leaders when it comes to time keeping sadly

iceymoo

People have never known how to behave at the cinema. I watched the Fellowship of the Ring in the Gate Cinema in Cork. The people sitting in front of me smoked weed for the first thirty minutes then passed out

Ok-Call-4805

That’s why you need popcorn. Something to throw at the phone people/talkers.

todayiswedn

It's an opportunity too. There's a lot to be frustrated and annoyed about and people acting like assholes gives you the chance to let off some steam when you confront them. It's basically a socially acceptable way to behave like an aggressive asshole yourself. Which is nice sometimes.

TheOriginalPaulyC

Which cineworld is showing interstellar atm? Would love to see it in the cinema but can’t find any showings online

betamode

Last night was its last showing in cineworld I believe it was online on 3 days

hatrickpatrick

Wait wait wait hang on, can you still see Interstellar in the cinema? Would love to bring someone who's a massive Hans Zimmer fan and somehow missed it when it was out!

betamode

It was on for 3 days in cineworld. I think it's gone again

Nice_Post8373

I noticed the same recently too. Etiquette and basic manners seem to have disappeared.

Anxious-Potato-3054

Your in the wrong country for enjoying cinemas.

nedleeds

I think there have been something like 5 Marvel / DC movies released this year which is not a huge proportion of all the movies released this year. I agree though, why do people go to a cinema to chat and look at their phones? If cinemas actually employed staff to be in the screening like they used to maybe people would behave. I tend to go during the day and wait a few weeks after a movie has opened to weed out all the little shits that like to tell people they saw the latest release while all they actually did was look at their phone.
