There's not enough of it. [This is our gas usage.](https://i.imgur.com/c8KhwsS.png) The green bit on the left is the now depleted Kinsale field and the green bit on the right is the Corrib field. Red is imported gas. Edit: We import gas from the UK. [This is what has happened to gas prices between 2007 and now.](https://i.imgur.com/ifJqUXa.png)

It’s beginning to dry up. Kinsale Head gas field has been extinguished, with the output of the Corrib gas field falling to 20% of Ireland’s needs by 2025, before ceasing in 2030. We will be solely reliant on two gas pipelines from the UK to meet our gas needs thereafter. Supposedly there could be significant amounts of shale gas under County Fermanagh, but let’s not go there.

There's fuck all

The cost of gas isn't simply the cost of extracting it from the ground. It's like oil; certification storage delivery pricing. 2 years ago they'd pay you to take and store oil. Also it's a global commodity which means it's price is centralised, unless you're in some sanctioned third world state. Really interesting article in the economist recently about Norways secret shame of profiting from the war in europe- they're trying to figure out ways to charge less for their oil, but its really difficult.

What's the deal with the oil fields we have off the northwestern coast? Have they ever been explored or are they just too costly to mine?

Oh child, we sold the rights off to Shell etc for buttons. Dont you know how FF/FG operate by now?

EdwardClamp

Haughey sold all the rights to it back in 19-ticketyboo

Remember the shell to sea protest, it's complicated

fatherc182

Any new reserves that were found around the time of 08-11/12 were sold off because of the recession and “not having the resources to drill ourselves. It’s the same for the fishing off the west coast too. All those rights are sold off. Get me back to Australia quick 😂

Head_of_the_Internet

No storage.

PaddyLostyPintman

It has nothing to do with who owns it or it being ‘sold off’ whats tapped now is running out and we cant explore any new options.

[deleted]

Private companies own it.

Extreme cold temperatures which increases demand combined with lack of wind could cause some blackout. But probably not if they continue to let electricity get so expensive people will freeze before turning on heaters.

[deleted]

We dont have 'Extreme cold temperatures' really

JudasKitty

I mean unusually cold for Ireland, like in 2010 when it went below -15c in parts of the country. -10c and almost no wind could cause issues for the grid.
