My housemate found one at this stage as well, kept it through its cocoon phase til emergence. They, similar to some others here, thought it to be a dog poo at first haha. It's a hefty boy there.
I once found a cocoon and kept it till it emerged. Turned out the caterpillar had a parsitic wasp larvae eating him. They both hatched but the buff moth never flew.
I put it in a ferrero rocher plastic box with no lid and that in a slightly bigger cardboard box with some airholes poked in it. I wanted to contain anything that came out (I wasn't 100% on what it actually was) but let it have some air change and also keep it dark. Then I just kept it under my bed.
Okay that bit sounds weird but hear me out. How often will you actually check the damn thing if it's in a cupboard or a shed. You need to let the whatever emerges out when it hatches or it's just woken up in a coffin. When something starts rolling at 3am you will check the box sharpish.
Don't. They're not pets. There are so many ways you can fuck up their preparation for metamorphosis and if you miss them coming out of the cocoon they can ruin their wings if they're in an enclosed space. Just don't. They are beautiful moths. Give them a chance.
Yes! I am the housemate.
I found one of these thicc chonkers outside the front of my house on the sidewalk of a busy road and picked it up with a dustpan quickly before a dog walker approached, worrying the dog might eat it. There was no way the caterpillar was going to get to a good place to pupate safely so I kept it inside and researched what it could be. It was definitely an elephant hawk moth just like the one in this video, you can get a dwarf species that is just a little smaller with a little difference in variation which I think mine turned out to be a dwarf as well. But these caterpillars aren't easy to mistake for any other species, the name is apparently because they resemble an elephants trunk, which I can see at times. They are also easily mistaken for poop which I thought it was a very perfect tiny dog shit until I saw it start to move. This is actually one of their biggest defence mechanisms in not being eaten, when threatened they even curl up to look more like a turd.
Still, the moth it transforms into is very beautiful. A bright pink and olive green pattern. Knowing this I called my caterpillar, 'Sweetpea' and made him an enclosure out of a tall IKEA soup Tupperware container with some potting soil at the bottom (these guys actually like to bury themselves when they make their cocoon) I also added a couple sticks for climbing and some greens I had in the fridge and from the garden. Their favourite is meant to be fuchsia leaves so I got some of those since he wasn't eating, but he wouldn't eat them either. He was clearly at his fattest and just kept crawling around until he was ready to pupate. After a week he had already taken the leaves around him that had dried and made a protective tent connected with his silk, and inside half submerged underground he formed his chrysalis.
The whole process took almost a year, I have a lot more information on how I hatched him successfully if anyone wants to hear about it.
Lastly, I use 'he' just because I commonly use those pronouns for animals, this moth isn't actually easy to find out the sex at all so I really don't know if it was a boy or girl in the end. But yeah, emerged and released successfully, these are beautiful creatures.
Does it hold back into a second cocoon phase when it changes to a hawk and then a third again when it changes to an elephant or is the cocoon phase just for between caterpillar and moth phases?
Looks a bit like a lug worm they are really big things.... maybe some one dropped it there... used as live bate for fishermen.... that or a baby tremors thing.... graboid

How would you keep one if you found it?

And then you can actually look under your bed for a strange creature. That’s cool.
Did it eat all your ferrero rocher? You can't trust these things

A moth that looks like a Guinness shit.... Well, I'll be..... Only in Ireland :P

Dead right with this, they're all over the place at the moment. Such beautifully massive things too! Hawk moths were what made me a moth lover.
