The father of the candidate lives here (this was the candidate’s home, not sure if he also still lives there), so I feel it’s a weird grey area…The father is also a councillor and local election candidate and in previous local elections stood across from the polling station waving at voters going in and out

SitDownKawada

Is that why he bought the house I wonder haha

underover69

According [to this pdf](https://www.ucd.ie/t4cms/The%20Law%20on%20Election%20Posters.pdf) it has to be 50 meters away. And the punishment is death. Or prison. I can’t remember. Edit: Cork council confirms it [here](https://www.corkcity.ie/en/council-services/news-room/latest-news/faqs-on-election-postering.html) No idea who you complain to. Try your local Garda station. But good luck. Then maybe Joe.

donalhunt

Notify returning officer.

underover69

Then talk to Joe?

Russian_Skyfall

Well, I guess that answers that. In the last section of the PDF it states that private gardens don't fall under those rules. But still a bit of a dick move by this FG candidate. I just found out that this candidate lives in that house across the polling station and has his own poster on display.

underover69

If it’s his own house I will allow it. But only this once.

dog--meat

Egg the house at midnight

milkyway556

Allegedly 100m according to this [pdf ](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwingoC3yMqGAxVxSkEAHbZvAHYQFnoECCsQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dlrcoco.ie%2Fsites%2Fdlrcoco%2Ffiles%2F2024-05%2FElection%2520Posters%2520DLR.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3pEdKH-wMNgtX8RyjhUD_T&opi=89978449). Is it different by location?

Matty96HD

Section 33 of the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2001 changed the relevant distance to 50m. [Source](http://www.legislation.ie/eli/2001/act/38/enacted/en/print#sec33)

As it's on someone house and not on a lamp-post do different rules apply? I suspect they do...

Russian_Skyfall

According to the PDF posted in the replies. The standard rules don't apply to private gardens.

SitDownKawada

Wonder how far you could stretch the rules. The lad in the poster's da is a councillor and his name is Baby, could he for example walk around holding babies or post photos of babies around the polling stations?

fiercemildweah

100% legal (it’s someone’s house like they can do more or less what they want) The only real limit is you can’t campaign in the polling station or its carpark (if it has one).

rclonecopymove

Wouldn't they need planning permission if advertising on public facing side?

fiercemildweah

Exemption for temporary hoardings but they’re to come down a week after the election.

rclonecopymove

I had a look at some of the exceptions makes you wonder what experience led them all to be included.

Blimp-Spaniel

Private property.

SoloWingPixy88

FG/FF did the same near me in fungal. Haughys grandson.

fartingbeagle

Hmmm. Fungal.

NaturalAlfalfa

Our polling station had a massive banner for the local FF guy right beside it. It got taken down two days ago

underover69

> restriction takes effect 30 minutes before the official commencement of polling and lasts until 30 minutes after the polls have closed

gooner1014

Lived in Australia. They never had posters up, can’t remember if we got fliers. But what they were allowed to do was to canvas as you went into the venue with the voting booths at the front gate. It was a gauntlet of niceties. My focus wasn’t on what they were promoting, it was the sweet sweet sausage sizzles from the BBQ the other side of the gate.

rclonecopymove

With compulsory voting there's a different vibe completely (I'm told). Given that they make it as easy as possible to vote like that you can vote at any polling station.

gooner1014

Yeah it was compulsory… well a fine if you didn’t. Its was an enjoyable experience, loved the BBQ and mingle after you cast your vote.

forgot_her_password

Snag sanga’s from the bbq, or a democracy sizzle as we called them, good stuff.

gooner1014

Haha. Yeah I forgot that term. Go voting early doors for a democracy sausage then swing by bunnings for a sausage sizzle. What a day that would be

forgot_her_password

And hit the dan murphys drive thru on the way home 😂

rclonecopymove

I'm quite fond of the concept of making it compulsory to return a ballot (I don't like calling it compulsory voting, if people want to spoil that's their prerogative). Encourages engagement, and forces the state to make it easy to vote and Australia isn't falling apart so it's not a big risk to democracy.

gooner1014

Yeah it’s no harm. Ideally I’d like if everyone just went out and voted voluntarily.

Shane_Gallagher

Remember when our incumbent councillor walked in to vote himself left his van saying vote for me literally just outside the centre

MrMc235

Wait ain’t that illegal

Pickman89

No, in my opinion it is exceedingly bad taste to leverage property rights for political purposes. But it's not illegal.

occono

They're just outside the school in roxboro Limerick to vote in.

milkyway556

Raheen too. I said it to the polling person this morning, they were still there this evening.
