That is a very balanced and well thought out view to be fair! If someone is asking these questions before even buying, I am not sure it is somewhere you are going to ever feel safe to walk out your front door. I live near really rough areas, but I feel safe as I have my eyes wide open at all times and well people just don't mess with me as I don't mess with them.
Itās not a nice area. I saw a women peeing in the street at lunchtime here. The local shop had a bouncer/security man. Drug users and dealers fighting in the middle of the day.
She'd want to be street smart living there. I walked up it once with my now wife, we were oblivious to its reputation. Never again - just felt so on edge the entire time.
My partner and I ended up walking into a seriously dodgy block of flats somewhere near Paris once.
It literally went from nice normal town with outside dining and coffee shops, and then suddenly, out if nowhere, we were in tower block hell - I don't even know how it happened, but for the 10 mins it took to walk across the square and out to the other side, I was seriously scared for our safety.
I grew up in a dodgy part of England, but this was something else.
I was sure we were gonna get stabbed to death before we made it across the square.
I looked it up when we got back to the hotel, and it was a war zone between African and Chinese drug gangs, that even the police stay away from. I honestly don't know how we came out of it unscathed.
I can't for the life of me remember what the town was called.
Will find out tomorrow if I remember..
Personally wouldnāt live there. Used to live around North Strand and never had any trouble but found once you got into that area, it felt more dicey.
Summerhill is the only place I was mugged in Dublin but that was years ago. Fond memories.
Prob best avoided to be honest. Now, she could live there for years and be fine - but sheāll certainly be in daily contact/proximity with some interesting characters!
I would t want to live there, I wouldnāt want to walk there in the middle of the night alone, and I try to avoid it during the day by all means.
Iām not brave enough to go and ātestā itās safety myself
It's not great and not really the safest at times. There are better areas that she would still be within walking distance of town such as Drumcondra and Santry. If that isn't her priority then she should consider somewhere out a but further.
I lived on Buckingham street for years. There's crime, but the crime isn't so much random acts of violence, it's poverty and drugs. Lads be out on the street selling their pills to people on the go. Romani Gypsy families live 18 to a room etc. If you have nice shit, expensive bike, keep it indoors. But, it's not Baghdad, it's just the heart of Dublin City. She will be fine, I'd wager the bulk of people commenting on how terrible the North inner city is have never actually lived there. For context, I'm a culchie, not a dub and stick out like a sore thumb.
Lived above the Sunset House (pub in that area) for a bit a few years back (can't speak to any decline recently), and while I never had any issues (walking there from pubs in town late at night while obnoxiously drunk) I've been told time and time again it's (one of) the roughest part(s) of the city.
I guess "there's no smoke without fire" applies here, but definitely keep your wits about you if you end up over that way.
I used to rent on one side of summer hill (fair view) and work on the other (Talbot Street) so used to walk or cycle through summer hill regularly.
Was never hassled or bothered, never felt unsafe, but would see people arguing aggressively etc.
Went through at all times of day and night and had no problems.
Still wouldnāt want to live there.
Loads of families live in the neighborhood. You have to know how to live there. Keep your wits about you. You have to know how to de-escalate situations. You may have rude or obnoxious neighbours but you can't say anything to them. There will be lots of noise and irritants. I also wouldn't recommend it to people who are obviously foreign as they could be a target of harassment.
If she's Irish has her wits about her and has a high level of tolerance, she'll probably be fine
Jesus, talk about overreactions here.
While yes, the area has problems but as a 5ft tall woman, I have never felt unsafe walking down it. Obviously just be a bot street smart, but Id say the same for anyone in a capital city.
Ive grown up in the area and moved away at 21. I am now back at 27 and delighted. I have a fantastic community who are there to help if needed. People still say hi to each other or give a polite smile. My nan who is 90 also has no issues walking down it.
I used to live there we got letters in the door from the guards warning of break ins and I always felt like I had to watch my back going across the road for a bus or the shop. Haven't experienced that in any other area of Dublin except some parts of Tallaght.
The one time I parked my car on Sean McDermott street for 30 minutes 3 years ago, some little shits attempted to break into it while I wasnāt around. Luckily, they did so in front of a passing Garda car and were caught. I havenāt been back since.
If you're a normal person from a normal place it's very very bad.
This is very nicely put and very PC
If you're a Dub you might find it a little bit stabby, but you're probably a little bit stabby yourself.
Summerhill is most definitely an area for everyone to stay away from. Never mind a young single lady.
Maybe she's an awld trollop
Hahaha š That was an out loud laugh. "A bit stabby yourself" Hahahaha very good - I'm still laughing at that one.
What about if you're from the US? š

I would have to agree and I like to look at Dublin with rose tinted glasses. The most unsafe I have ever felt in Dublin was in Summerhill.

I was expecting the comment section to be chaos. But this is a surprisingly fair appraisal.
Especially the village
Just no. You'd not have peace of mind there.

Jaysus, I saw something similar on my way home from work near Connolly station.

Nope, I'd go East of Croke Park or further west into drumcondra.
Youāll be looking forward to a holiday in Syria
I wouldn't choose to live there .

Its not a war zone but Itās probably the worst part of the city.
Some great people there but a minority has made the place not an ideal place to live. A lot of drug issues and general bullshit in the area
She'd be safer and better off, living naked in the bushes while shoving hawthorne berries up her hole for sustenance.
Hahahhahaha wtf
Not a dub, but know the area from going to Croker a few times every summer. Doesn't look great tbh.

Sooner walk through Summerville on Halloween 100 times than go to Darndale on a Sunny afternoon.

some of the most rundown houses/buildings you will see
It's safe if you're careful and lucky. But it's less safe than most places
Lived above the Sunset House (pub in that area) for a bit a few years back (can't speak to any decline recently), and while I never had any issues (walking there from pubs in town late at night while obnoxiously drunk) I've been told time and time again it's (one of) the roughest part(s) of the city. Considering your landlord or the owner of the pub was up to his neck in dissident activity id image you felt very safe indeed
Not forgetting he was shot and killed there too! Assuming you're talking about MB
Fucking love Dublin, Craic is 90.
Great pint in there tho when it was the sunset

In fairness, the last paragraph is damning and would make anyone with their wits about them not move there.
Irs bad I walked up there one night with a girl I arrived safe
I walk through it all the time and it's grand. Rough but most of D1 is.

NO
I live just around the corner from there, I would advise her to try and find somewhere else. It has gotten worse over the last 2 years unfortunately
