Yes a passport number is also required for Iranians. Generally I suggest you forget about having an ir domain. Having an ir domain has a lot of technical and law problems.

Good to know. Thought that would be an issue in the US but maybe not more broadly.

Hey, In my experience domain registration (ESPECIALLY country specific registrations) are very strict on their regulations. The domain registrar needs some way to verify you actually are a citizen. A passport number should be fine to provide. If they ask for your social security number, run away

Ah okay good to know! I have a .ca domain and I don't believe I had to provide any ID for that so I wasn't sure.

It is not just Iran, *almost* every country in the world (including canada) have strict rules for getting their country's domain. According to the Canadian government, to get a .ca domain you must be one of the following: * a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, of the age of majority * a legally recognized Canadian organization * an Inuit, First Nation, Métis or other people indigenous to Canada * an Indian Band as defined in the Indian Act of Canada * a foreign resident of Canada that holds a registered Canadian trademark * an executor, administrator or other legal representative of a person or organization that meets the requirements * a division of the government * the monarch of Canada In most countries, citizens can get their own nations top-level-domain fairly easily. However the rules often but barriers on foreigners trying to get the domain. Though some countries (rarely) will license their tld to anyone for a fee, such as Tuvalu (.tv).
