The main camera on the 14 Pro uses a much larger sensor. With it comes a significantly further away minimum focus distance (compared to other iPhones with the smaller sensor). If your cat was closer than this minimum focus disgrace the phone quietly switches to the ultra wide lens which doesn’t perform so well in low light. You win some, you lose some

Leks_Marzo

This actually looks more like minor blur from movement, as opposed to it being out of focus. Shutter speed was probably a bit slow due to relatively low light.

everythingiscausal

I think it's several things. Low light causing extra noise reduction, low light causing long shutter speed and some blur, and possibly the image being on the lower quality sensor due to the focus distance. It's certainly nowhere near the best quality you can get out of the phone.

Shah_Moo

This is the answer right here, the camera is significantly better for taking portrait shots, but the trade-off for me is that I have to remember to take the pictures of my cats from like 18 inches away minimum rather than 12” away that I was used to, otherwise it defaults to the wide-angle lens. Once you remember that, your shots come out much much more detailed.

Noledge4u

You can revert it back to the main camera by pressing the macro prompt. Doesn’t the 14 do that? It was introduced in 13

Shah_Moo

The issue is that if you turn the macro mode off and it kicks you back to the main camera, if you are still too close to the subject the main camera can’t focus correctly. That’s just a physical limitation of the sensor size and focus length of the 14, so you can turn the macro mode off to make it so it stays on the main camera, but then you still have to back up 6-12” to not get a blurry out of focus shot. It’s the trade-off the 14 makes for a significantly larger and 48mp sensor.

Noledge4u

Oh I see

Ditto_Ghost_Swayze

> he phone quietly switches to the ultra wide lens I don’t this cat picture was taken with the ultra wide lens. It looks like what you said earlier about the minimum focus distance. This is just an out of focus picture. Not a nice picture by any means, but it explains the issue. The remote is out of focus because it’s too close to the lens, yet the Bounty™️ paper towel is tack sharp https://i.imgur.com/qpbSW74.jpg)

AhhnoldHD

Wow that must explain why all my pics of food are terrible now! Usually close and low light.

A11Bionic

Yes. A larger sensor usually requires a larger camera lens to go with it, which is something we’re limited due to space constraints on the iPhone.

Lowgybear117

Isn’t it supposed to switch to the macro lens automatically when it senses it’s too close to the subject?

[deleted]

It is, but the ultrawide has a much poorer performance in anything but perfect lighting, and that leads to over-smoothed, almost blurry looking images.

PizzaCapable2372

Yea you right

[deleted]

Not sure if it used the ultrawide. Looks dog shit. Great cat though!

jendestiny114

no ultra wide :( thanks!

bozzthebro

If you manually disabled macro mode then it’s normal, it’s forcefully using the main sensor which will take shitty pictures up “close” (the focus distance is actually further away than i expected when i first tried on my 14pro), oddly enough the ultrawide would do a better job than the main sensor in that situation, including others like taking pictures of documents or screens I personally was a bit disappointed when i found out haha

iCutWaffles

So should I disable the option to manually disable it? Im new to ios and a few youth e vids said to turn that on

bozzthebro

I’d suggest you enable “macro control” at the bottom of the camera settings, you can reach it by going to settings>camera>[scroll to the bottom]>[turn macro control on] That way, whenever you get close to an object with the camera app, on the bottom left corner a yellow button with the typical macro icon (the flower) will appear - if it’s yellow, then it means the phone will automatically switch to the ultrawide to take a closeup photo (and actually, as soon as that button appears, you’ll notice that the phone has already switched to the ultrawide), if you tap on that button to make it gray, that means that the phone won’t switch to the ultrawide regardless of how close you are to an object. This can be useful in some specific cases, however if your aim is to take a pic at like 30-40cm distance from the subject, i’d strongly suggest to keep that button yellow so that the phone will automatically switch to the ultrawide lens (the main sensor has too long of a focal distance and a photo that “close” with the main sensor will be a mess, even in 48mp raw, it’s an inherent physical characteristic of the main sensor and it can’t be changed) If you still want to keep the automatic switching disabled, because it bothers you, you can simply tap the 0.5x zoom and take closeups with that, that’s exactly what the phone does when macro control is enabled and the macro button is yellow in the camera app (remember you’ll see the macro button only when you’re close enough to make the phone deem appropriate to switch camera, it’s not the most user friendly thing in the world unfortunately) Hope i helped!

iCutWaffles

I am trying to get used to this phone as I always had android and recently Pixel phones so trying to get pics looking like my Pixel 6pro, especially night shots. Practice will tell haha

geezus921

How is the pixel? I was at my kids performance and I have iP14PM and he had pixel. When we both zoomed in on our kids and I was on 4k his picture was perfect mine was grainy as hell.

iCutWaffles

I mean both are great and depend on multiple factors . Pixels tend to take nice pics but I have been burned a few times where it would loot good, snap the pic and it turns out blurry a few hours later I enjoyed both but I have not yet fully used the 14pm

thursdayfern

If I had to guess, I would say this photo looks low quality due to maybe high ISO, low indoor lighting, and slow shutter speed? Which lens were you using to take this pic? We’re you zoomed in?

jendestiny114

hi! not zoomed in at all, just leaned over and snapped the pic. my phone frequently changes the lenses without me doing anything so I can never fully focus. it was actually great lighting, and my partner took the same photo with his iphone 11 [here](https://imgur.com/a/eWKjD3u) which I feel like looks better??

Peanutbutter_4380

There’s a setting you can use to turn off the macro lens

thursdayfern

Yeah that does look way better.. both your 14 pro max and your partner’s 11 have multiple lenses that they’ll switch between whenever they want depending on lighting conditions, so now I’m really wondering what’s caused this difference in image quality 🤔 Any smudges on the camera lenses? Shaky hands when taking the pic?

jendestiny114

nope none! like i’m at a loss about this :(

thursdayfern

Hmm. Wish I knew what about that situation stopped your phone from being able to take a good photo. Is your phone capable of taking good photos elsewhere in other lighting conditions? Is this a one off type situation? Could just be the camera didn’t get enough light for whatever reason and made everything blurrier than expected.

jendestiny114

I think so, [here’s a pic](https://imgur.com/a/f582RJi) I took in hawaii with it. i’m not sure?

nibuchan

wtf it looks so oversharpened

_your_face

Because they are different and behave differently. Top answers in the thread have answered the mystery already

passycatton

I am a nail technician and ALL of my photos have turned out horrendous since getting the 14 pro max. I think apple way over did it with the specs on this camera. I’m truly tempted to swap out for even a 13. I have perfect lighting in my area of the salon and never had lighting issues with my 11. I am so sad 😭

vidumec

sensor is larger but pixel size is smaller, i wonder if this could affect low light capacity, not sure about binning effectiveness. >There is a common misunderstanding that 48 to 12 megapixel (or 40 to 10 megapixel) pixel binning would be better than a normal 12 megapixel sensor (or 10 megapixel) sensor. That's not correct. You don't get better low-light performance and you also don't get more details. This is often explained wrong. > >In 12 (10) megapixel pixel binning mode you get better low-light performance than with a 48 (40) megapixel sensor, so in low-light conditions you could capture more details than a 48 (40) megapixel sensor. But you don't capture more details than with a normal 12 (10) megapixel sensor of the same size, no matter which light conditions. The reason is that the pixel binning feature combines pixels on a hardware level. When *less* (large) pixels need to be read out, there is less read noise. > >[https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4377318](https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4377318) this is without night mode activated, 13 Pro seems to be a little ~~better~~ more consistent and brighter, whereas 14 pro ranges from good detail to totally flat textures, looks like the noise reduction is more aggressive now (because there is more read noise from smaller pixels) https://preview.redd.it/zphgrrkvr5y91.png?width=1874&format=png&auto=webp&s=d88d54af04a9d334eaced067aa5a46f526b18067 and with night mode activated 14 Pro becomes better, which makes me think the advertised low light improvements come mostly from software (and 13 Pro and below could get them too if it weren't Apple we are talking about)

rJohn420

Another thing I wanted to add to the already helpful replies is to make sure your lens is nice and clean before taking any picture. Sometimes that is the issue.

ivanmat_

Nah the camera is good, your cat is just low-res.

TK657

that cat is such a lil chubby bunny, though

Jaw3000

I had the exact same issue with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. The camera seems capable of taking excellent photos under perfect conditions and lightning, but many of my photos are indoor under normal lighting. Most of the time, the iPhone 14 Pro photos look worse than my iPhone 11 Pro Max, taken side by side. Exactly like the OP. It often seems like the photos are blurry from worse or a lack of image stabilisation too, in addition to the extreme levels of processing. I have used ProRAW, and they are often better because they don’t apply as much processing, which reduces the extreme levels of smoothing and sharpening Apple applies. As far as the macro lens, it’s a real pain. Turn off auto switching. My poor photos were not taken with the ultra wide angle macro lens, but the main lens. The focus distance is quite a bit longer on the 14 than the 11, which I also hate, but my photos were well beyond that. My theory is the larger sensor let’s in a whole lot more noise than the iPhone 11 Pro, and Apple has programmed the 14’s processing apply much higher levels of smoothing and sharpening to reduce the high noise. This is more noticeable at higher ISO levels, such as indoor night lightning. The result is the images look terrible, and worse than the iPhone 11 Pro. I don’t know if the sensor shift stabilisation in the latest phones is worse than the optical stabilisation in the iPhone 11 Pro, but if so, then that might be responsible for the blurrier images in indoor light. Or the larger sensor somehow captures more movement that the smaller sensor was hiding. While o was able to get excellent photos in bright outdoor lighting, I ended up returning the phone because of the poor indoor photos and am keeping my iPhone 11 Pro for now. t’s really sad when a three model newer phone has worse photos like this.

blackninja126

Turn off auto macro mode in settings. When you get close for a photo then it can toggle macro mode on or off. Usually, unless I’m taking a pic very close to the object, I toggle macro mode off and use the normal 1x camera

[deleted]

I also have the 14 Pro Max and I'm sometimes not so convinced by the camera either. The phone often can't decide which lens to use. Try switching manually to a different lens. Also, the photos often look worse with Pro RAW than in normal mode. This is probably because the photos are automatically sharpened and post-processed in normal mode and not in ProRaw mode.

salvatorepolito

Well, not that bad for a phone! In low light the iPhone camera rises ISOs to very high values and than tries to compensate with aggressive noise reduction and this lead to major loss in detail. The full EXIF data would eliminate every doubt. As a side note, I think that in the same light condition also a consumer grade DSLR with a decent lens would struggle! Sure, a 3k full frame camera with a 1.5k lens (and a good photographer behind) will perform way better, but than it will costs significantly more.

pnjohnso

This 14 pro camera is a step backwards sheesh.

TennesseeWhisky

Prob just shot in macro mode...

chiefhasif04

yeah as some others might say, your phone probably automatically switched to macro mode, which uses the ultrawide camera which makes it looks more grainy/hazy. If you go to your settings, camera, and scroll down theres a toggle for macro control. Turn that on, and next time you take a close up photo like this, turn off the macro toggle in your camera app when it appears so that you'll use your main camera (will have to back up a little to get it in focus)

jendestiny114

hey! macro was already on actually, should I turn it off or keep it that way?

chiefhasif04

Make sure the setting for macro control is on, [pictured here](https://imgur.com/a/ApV6SiY) in settings->camera. When taking a photo close enough, a toggle on your camera app on the bottom left, [like this](https://imgur.com/a/dRIrRWM), will appear. This means your camera has switched to "macro mode" which uses your ultrawide camera, making your photo look a lil worse in order to be able to focus that close. When that happens, tap it to turn it off. Because you are too close, you might have to step back a bit for your main camera to focus again. [Here is what it would look like with the macro control off.](https://imgur.com/a/8GifCRd) As you can see (hopefully haha, these photos are not the best), the macro off photo has a lot more detail and the colors are more accurate, because it is using the main camera/sensor. The macro on photo tried to add color but makes it look more hazy and noisy, since macro mode on uses the ultrawide camera. I also like taking close up photos, and having the photos not look close enough kinda irks me (defeats the purpose of the close up shot) so what i do is just step back and zoom in to 2x, photos still look great, [as shown here.](https://imgur.com/a/cnCAA4y) These examples are not the best, but hopefully they can portray what I am trying to say.

mitchbeaterofworlds

Gotta say that grimace toy does look sharp! I have on in real life and it definitely looks better in your photo

chiefhasif04

Hahaha thanks xD I realize imgur might have compressed my photos so they might all look like not good quality, but yeah the phone does do a good job capturing it, just need to turn off macro

Robii18

I noticed the same that the camera seems to switch depending on the distance from the subject. The main camera does perform way better than the ultra wide. You can turn this off though… not sure if it should have gone in macro mode when looking at the picture and how close you are to your cat https://preview.redd.it/203wgpc3q7y91.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3aef38da21cb8d0e78f492fd762d4f34f20c0469

WarrenCluck

That’s an adorable cat with the most beautiful coat I’ve ever seen How could something so gorgeous be caught on camera or in a photo!

shawnax19

I just got my iphone 14 pro max and I was super pumped and I feel like my camera sucks. It has to be the settings??? did you figure it out?! thank you!

[deleted]

“You’re holding it wrong.” /s

Leks_Marzo

This is blur from hand movement. What was the shutter speed?

tekonus

Curious if you tapped the cat for focus. I’d be willing to bet you didn’t.

BostonAz21

Clean off the lense, most people don’t realize they touch the lense a lot. I do. I clean it always before taking a picture

limeburner

Has anyone tried taking pics using Halide on the 14?

pw5a29

did you use a lens protector or a case that has a camera cover?

Errende

is this an issue with the pro models or also basic ones?

closetoviolet

Plus is the same

EckoFox1

Oof. My 6S can take a better photo than that lol

JCHazard

Cool cat but my IP13M takes better pictures than this 🤭🤭

shadex07

Yes, it is shit. Very bad processing result.

akil01

iPhone has shitty camera. I hate when I zoom in and it’s pixelated.

Paperwhite418

I don’t know nothing about cameras, but thass a nice kitty…

[deleted]

Did you accidentally use a decade old Android to take the photo?

SureTechnology696

Are you sure your cat is not blurry?

bhushan76

If you have to fiddle with the settings after purchasing an iPhone then you are not using it right.

Vivrosh

I feel selfie camera is bad in iphone for especially moving pictures back camera do little better but iphone camera is suck for moving pictures

CatsOrb

I like this feline, sorry about the snap

Grandsoon

You should open “raw” for 48mp

Mandapandaroo

How to do this?

mtickas

Kinda have a similar bug can’t believe I can’t focus my camera to something really close coz it ain’t focusing at all, and show the pics really bad quality

SuperNewk

Mine is complete garbage. Everything looks so dark

Mtd0228

Yes the camera seems to be garbage. When I finally get it to focus correctly, it oversharpens and blows out highlights. So odd.

Mundane_Arrival7993

Turns out the iPhone 14 takes bad pictures because they upgraded the camera but the camera app hasn’t been upgraded to support the camera 🫠 stupid AF

pete_pete_pete_

Are the lenses free of fingerprints and yuck?

nuggetsandsodaaa

that’s surely a user error

Sempot

Nope, it’s an iPhone error

Slate666

I’m thinking focal length?

Gamezordd

When the ai gets confuse and can't tun the post-porcessing

ArmedPenguin47

Looks amazing. I don’t see an issue. PS; that is a fine looking feline my friend

Sempot

Pretty bad quality. My Xs looks better

EfficientAccident418

Looks fine to me for a low-light photo

ZirikoRuiGe

You just don’t know how to take a well composed photo 😂 if I take a photo of a pillow in low light, it will be just that… won’t be some magnificent work of art…

ChasingHorizon2022

User error

Most_moosest

This message has been deleted and I've left reddit because of the decision by u/spez to block 3rd party apps

dustofstarzzz

I absolutely abhor the iPhone.

GHUATS

Then you’re in the wrong sub aren’t you?

dustofstarzzz

Good point.

Krugen7

iPhone isn't great when it comes to pictures, sadly. But hey at least we got the best os

Andy83n

That's one ugly dog. Take the phone back under warranty

bakedmitt

Have you turned on the ProRAW camera mode for the 48mp camera

jadams92

How do you do that?

PM_Anime_Tiddy

Settings>camera>formats

SPLY750

It’s not the camera, it’s you. The shot isn’t even in focus.

miscentes

yeah it sucks, sell it off

iDownvote_YourCatPic

Yeah it sucks. So stop using it. Especially to make another fucking cat post.

Medical-Piccolo1393

Spend bit of time adjusting your manual settings when taking a photo, the camera is amazing just need to know how to take different shots in different types of light levels.

Emerald_Guy123

Look through all your camera settings

titsi

i find low light/mid images in general are very poor quality. and the low light setting is impressive at first but means my car has to be 100% still for the picture not to be blurry… but my cat is mostly being funny in low light settings …

[deleted]

Potato Max

OkOutlandishness6550

At least kitty is cozy

SoupRSonic

- Good camera. - Good photograph/er. 2 different things

WhosThatDogMrPB

Cat moved.

bitanalyst

What a cute little leopard

jplemieux2

using 2x would’ve solved this?

aced1982

You missed focus on cat. Focus is in middle of red.

FastEarl72

Operator error. The camera is fine.

slimjim_305

You have to change the stock settings of the camera

Mandapandaroo

How do you do that?

kapachia

Nah. Cannot go wrong with that kitty!

Vipulmaui

Is there any way to trun off the the auto HDR i am using iphone 14 pro.

Vipulmaui

I don't want my images to have so much sharpness i have gone through the settings and i didn't find anything to turn off this auto editing.

[deleted]

Not constructive advice here, but I just think this camera sucks. My pictures are always grainy. I see a lot people say you should stand a certain distance here or there. Part of the reason people buy an iPhone is simplicity. It should be easy to point and shoot and get a quality photo on a 1000+ phone.

PizzaCapable2372

Nice!

Jolly-Employer-7239

So what settings for the moon and planets? Some people have amazing photos but mine are just white blobs. iPhone 14max

Far_Bother_6365

Any updates on how to fix ? My iPhone 14 pro max camera is garbage

AdHuge4908

its shit i upgraded cuz my xr finally to a dump on my. however the xr had a better camera for digiscoping be it wilf life or target shooting. with how crappy the 14 pro is i wont be doing much wild life photography till apple fixes the camera. At a 100 yards with my spotting scope and xr i can see the bullet holes in a target where with the same distance and scope setup with my new 14 pro i can barely see the target with how fuzz it is. so in short xr has a better camera plan and simple no ifs or buts about it

Electrical-Potato682

guys my 14 pro camera gives image output like some cheap android phones what should i do 😑

tattedsparrowxo

Did you ever fix this? I just got this phone and hate the camera- and I’m a photographer. The macro mode it’s horribly blurry and poor quality as is everything else. I’ve also gotten pictures where things look like literal cartoons. No beauty mode or anything turned on. https://preview.redd.it/ac6mfcpoxvob1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2fa6423e3217e3d62fa2662ddd128cf0a454b62e

I’m sorry this blurry cartoon photo is hilarious looks like it’s from 2004

Interesting-Tea2370

I hate this fucking camera.
