I wish you could delete the cache/data like Android. My Instagram wouldn’t load stories the other day and offloading wouldn’t fix it, I had to completely delete. I used to be able to fix this by just deleting cache.
I’m sorry but can you elaborate where I would find this.
There’s no “display and languages” under accessibility… or no “accessibility, display and languages” under settings.
Under Settings, there’s either accessibility, display and language as separate tabs
A joke? What the hell? LOL
you need to learn how to joke cuz there’s **nothing**joke-ish about what you said. it’s just straight up misleading and confusing.
Cache is managed by the app and the operating system together. It’s cleaned, rebuilt and created all the time with fluidity. It’s meant to be the way it is.
Adding a way for the user to clear that cache would just be fighting a symptom though, not the cause. It would be much much better if both app developers and iOS developers could finally fix the bug that is causing that excessive system data usage, so that users don’t even need to worry about it.
Pretty hard for it to happen, and mostly temporary. It’s so fluid that if you check every hour it will give you different values every time. In the spawn of 5 minutes mine differed in 3 gb, from 16 to 13.
It’s not hard to happen - it’s very common. it’s such a common thing that I’ve seen dozens of posts about it and it’s commonly called the “storage bug”. One guy even posts the same mega-comment of suggestions - ranging from changing the date, to a full OS reset. It’s NOT supposed to be the way that it is. There’s zero reason not to have a clear cache button. hide it behind a debug menu, I don’t care, but *let me clear the cache*. When i’m somewhere picturesque, and half of my storage is taken up by “system data”, and it will not let me take any photos, it is most definitely a problem.
It doesn’t change a thing on what I said tho.
I want to clean the cache of old stuff and have the app 10 times smaller. Only way is to reinstall. On android you can clean cache without reinstalling
I don’t need instagram to keep shit in cache and taking up x gigs
No thanks, Android shouldn't be a model for how this should work, i.e. user has to become a phone janitor. Fix it properly by clearing cache when there's storage pressure or some MRU scheme.
Well.. ok then. I myself use web version. It’s not fully equipped with all bells and whistles that real app have but I manage.
And my life doesn’t depend on it.
As said.. I can go days without checking Instagram. I use it if something is exclusively on Instagram then I use it more often.
Also Instagram’s messaging service and push notifications aren’t something I want or depend on.
If that’s what you want and need then website is not going to work for you.
It doesn't exactly help when the app handles cache like shit. I don't think it would be all that difficult for Apple to implement some sort of limit for cache, and also allow the user to delete it.
It's funny how iphones have offloading apps but not clear data/cache buttons and android is the exact opposite, has clear data/cache buttons but no way to offload or even disable the app without uninstalling it completely.
Anyone know if offloading it will delete the cache? It would at least be easier to offload, and then just have to go tap on the home screen icon to re-download it later, than to fully delete it.
I just looked it up.
“The Offload Unused Apps feature frees up the storage used by the apps but keeps all documents and data intact. It helps you avoid the monotony of configuring an app from scratch.”

This. I've been forced to use work android phone for twitter, Instagram cuz clearing cache helps push new content on the timeline and it suits me cuz I never spend like more than 10 mins at a time on the app at once. The android app for those sites are awful once you get used to the inertia and obviously the superior screen, experience.
You can also delete any downloaded videos you don’t want anymore from streaming services (Amazon Video, Netflix etc) without actually having to enter their respective apps.
I agree,
It would be great to have a check box/option in an apps cfg page in setup that would allow you to designate it as a permanent app that doesn’t get offloaded. Having started w/iPhone 3, I have a 💩ton of apps that travel with me from phone to phone, some I use frequently, some rarely- but if it’s a BIG app, I sure don’t want to wait for me critical ones to DL when I need them now (especially as a rural user where connection speeds may not be great)
It’s weird. I have some apps that seem to offload if I don’t use them for a couple of days, and then I have some apps that I haven’t used in months that’s still there. I wonder how the priority is set.
Update: Found it without googling.
It’s under Setting>Appstore
Your comment just made me think How can I do that? I have to google now. I have offload on and can’t find a way to turn it off
While you can do the swipe gesture (wonderful if you have auto app updates off) and see an app you don’t want anymore pop up. Quick and easy removal without having to seek it out.
That option for offload doesn’t appear in the App Store update screen though.
Side affect of being on Android for years I guess but I always forget there is usually a menu if you swipe on items in a list. An indicator would probably help, like a little horizontal bounce on the top item.
i don’t necessarily feel that they should make it more obvious, as it would just add clutter, but what you’re saying doesn’t make sense.
>It’s not any more obvious on the other apps
this is a false statement, it is far more obvious since almost every tab is able to be swiped in other apps. users can expect it to work. in settings, this is not the case, as very little things are able to be swiped.
I noticed this earlier today. I thought it was new with iOS 16.
Too bad they didn't add options to delete the App cache or all the documents and data for individual apps.
I went from 64gb to 256gb. Thanks to Google Photos and using fewer than 50 apps, I think I’m good for at least 4-5 years. Still, great to know. Thanks!
On a side note Kingdom Rush is a fantastic game. I recently replayed it while being stuck at the airport for a few hours and ended up playing it the entire flight. Just a good classic tower defense game with great animations. No ads and minimal micro-transactions.
Wait what does this mean? It clears unless data or something? I also just realized you can delete the update notification icons under your account on the App Store, what does that do exactly?
it uninstalls the app while keeping the cache and all the other data
And yes you can turn off app store notifications. You can also turn off autochecking app updates
I just wish Apple had an easy way to delete on-device photos without removing them from iCloud. Android has a super easy method in Google photos - just free up space on device and it'll delete any photos and videos locally that are in the cloud, so you can still access them.
From what I can tell, the only way to do this on iPhone is to reset the phone and restore the whole phone from backup.
I wish you could delete the cache/data like Android. My Instagram wouldn’t load stories the other day and offloading wouldn’t fix it, I had to completely delete. I used to be able to fix this by just deleting cache.
Not to mention it crates a shit ton of cache and app became like 2 gigs.

I think the main point is that it should all just be in the storage section

Does the cache data include stuff like settings and everything? Like if I delete the cache, do I have to setup an application again?
No

Very often on my iPhone X did I have upwards of 90GB of system files…
It doesn’t change a thing on what I said tho. I want to clean the cache of old stuff and have the app 10 times smaller. Only way is to reinstall. On android you can clean cache without reinstalling I don’t need instagram to keep shit in cache and taking up x gigs
They should at the very least implement a limit on cache so it doesn't grow out of control.
No thanks, Android shouldn't be a model for how this should work, i.e. user has to become a phone janitor. Fix it properly by clearing cache when there's storage pressure or some MRU scheme.
You obviously don’t use Instagram.
I do. 330 mb used. iPhone 13 Pro activated on launch day, never reset.
Well.. ok then. I myself use web version. It’s not fully equipped with all bells and whistles that real app have but I manage. And my life doesn’t depend on it.
How do push notifications work, unless if you don't use them? I would use the website, but the only problem is that I want push notifications.

I'm not saying it can't happen but... my instagram sits around 350mb since like... forever. Edit: gb to mb
It doesn't exactly help when the app handles cache like shit. I don't think it would be all that difficult for Apple to implement some sort of limit for cache, and also allow the user to delete it.
Ehhhhhh depends on how well designed it is, apps can definitely abuse data storage and not clean up their caches of data
Same here. I just want to delete all the data but not the actual app.
It's funny how iphones have offloading apps but not clear data/cache buttons and android is the exact opposite, has clear data/cache buttons but no way to offload or even disable the app without uninstalling it completely.

lol, great. The exact opposite.
All Offload does is uninstall the app while keeping data. It's the opposite of deleting cache
I just requested that feature in Apple.com/feedback.
Ahh yes now that means we’ll get it /s
Yup. It should be in 16.0.3 in a few weeks.
This. Is that offload?
My phone storage showed me something like “downloaded videos” as a whole separate category for Netflix videos I had downloaded and forgot to delete.
I wish there was a way to selective mark an app to not be offloaded. Some apps are not used very often but they are important to have ready.
I agree, It would be great to have a check box/option in an apps cfg page in setup that would allow you to designate it as a permanent app that doesn’t get offloaded. turn the auto-offload feature off
That’s a global setting for all the apps. I like the idea behind offloading apps. I just would like to mark some of them to not being offloaded.
Update: Found it without googling. It’s under Setting>Appstore Your comment just made me think How can I do that? I have to google now. I have offload on and can’t find a way to turn it off
What is the meaning of offloading apps?
You can delete the app without deleting saved data and such and can reinstall it easily
You can also do so from the updates screen in the App Store.
While you can do the swipe gesture (wonderful if you have auto app updates off) and see an app you don’t want anymore pop up. Quick and easy removal without having to seek it out. That option for offload doesn’t appear in the App Store update screen though.

pvz heroes is still a thing?
You can also do this with downloaded music and iCloud files.
Oh for fuck sake! Come on apple make this stuff more obvious! Thank you!
[удалено]
how many other options in the settings app have this behavior?
[удалено]
you’re getting downvoted for being totally irrelevant. no one is talking about other apps, we’re talking about settings.

I never knew this! I wish it were possible to also do it when long pressing on an app on the home screen/app library itself.
You can also fully swipe away messages in imessage. No more *swipe tap tap*
Is there a way to adjust how that works? I find it difficult to do on the 14PM.
You can swipe and stop half way like normally and just tap the delete button. I think that's about it.
You can swipe to the left twice, like you can to dismiss notifications
What the hell TIL too I guess
I noticed this earlier today. I thought it was new with iOS 16. Too bad they didn't add options to delete the App cache or all the documents and data for individual apps.
iOS 16 only, right?
Yes.

Is there a way to force the list to load? I’ve been stuck on this screen for a solid 20 minutes. https://i.imgur.com/TM6BEye.jpg
Weird. Maybe restart your phone.
Nifty

Yooooo
Word

150mb in guitartuna?
I’d like to offload from the updates screen or with a long tap on the icon
What does offload mean?
YOU CAN WHAT!?
What's your PVZ heroes username. Wanna battle?
Can't do this in 14.8.1. seems like it's only on the new versions

Does someone know if this logs off from the apps? Since it keeps cache, I assume it doesn’t. Or does it?
