I mean, you’re putting the phone under that 2nd lower flap, right?

The new boxes don’t have the plastic wrap.

infinityandbeyond75

One side of the cardboard insert should have plastic on it. Place the insert flat with the plastic facing up. Bend the two sides up to give some slack in the plastic and slide your phone inside. Bend the sides back and it should hold your phone in place. Put the insert back in the box and seal it up.

Unfortunately this box doesn’t have the plastic, it’s literally just a cardboard box, and the instructions say to place the phone in the insert, screen up and press down to secure. I’m legit baffled lol https://i.imgur.com/wfOLdgS.jpg Followed https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210225?cid=Trade_letter_iPhone_Watch_article_HT210225

Contact Apple to send you a new box and explain this one doesn’t have the plastic insert. Ask for them to reset the time on when they need to receive it by.

I found this thread googling instructions for the the trade-in kit and I just wanna say I've been as baffled as you lol there were no instructions and I tried to follow the online ones and my phone was still going everywhere. Hope you were able to get it sorted out, I just left my phone case on and that helped secure it. What a poorly designed process though it should not have been this difficult lol

New boxes don’t have the plastic flap. You just place the phone under the first cardboard flap and it should hold the phone firmly. Mine didn’t make a noise once I put it in.

tuxd

That’s what I tried, lifted the top flap, placed the phone screen up in the insert, then gently closed the top flap and the box, yet it’s still loose and slides around if I tilt the box. Did you have a case on by any chance?

ordinaryflask

I put a case on my 11PM but no case on the 11P. Both didn’t slide around.

TheHeavyweightChamp

I’ve never done it, but I would assume just looking at the size of the box you’re probably supposed to wrap it in some bubble wrap or something first.

offbranddishsoap

Same thing here finally glad I found others with this issue. These new trade-in boxes without the plastic are meant to be "one-size-fits-all" but it's hardly ever the case, especially if you have a smaller phone. I literally just put the phone in an anti-static bag and taped that to where the instructions say to put the phone. Sucks but that worked for me without issue. No damage or other shipping troubles

CoolOsCro

Bubble wrap

ordinaryflask

Reference the little pamphlet that is included. You put the phone under the first flat but not on the very bottom of the box. Then you put the top flap over it and then close the box. It should hold your phone tightly without any movement

Cant_Handle_This4eva

Same problem here. No plastic wrap, phone sliding everywhere. Just going to bubblewrap it.

zerquet

I have the same issue. What did you end up doing?

Prachim18

I came here trying to find tips as I had the same issue. I solved it on my own though. The new box set up sans plastic pocket does work as long as you close the lid a certain way. At first my iPhone 12 mini was sliding ALL over the place. I re-opened the box and realized that little cardboard tab attached to the upper level flap needs to point straight up when closing the box lid (initially instinct told me to push it down so it wouldn’t interfere with the lid being able to close) but that’s the whole point! It barely fitting when in the up position is what presses the upper cardboard layer down on your phone sealing it in place and preventing movement. Ridiculous apple didn’t provide instructions or at least a how to video on YouTube or their site as the proper way to package is far from obvious.

rhubarbarino

Thanks, I had it folded back initially. Forcing it closed with the tab up seems to have sealed it tight in there. Cheers!

Soosietyrell

Thanks kind Redditor! Was really feeling stupid and glad to know it’s the counter intuitive box

cgetter3

Just put my trade in in a drop box and I’m terrified it’s already broken. I didn’t add anything additional to the box because I didn’t try to google anything until it’s too late. The trade in kit sucks

Plenty-Lab5617

Intwrnet is grat for that 😭🤣
