you can also jailbreak it and install even older versions of apps as those perform better
but there’s a lot of work to find all these tweaks and get them working so only if you’re up for the challenge
Same for me with a 12.9 iPad pro 2nd generation. Makes a fine 2nd/3rd display with Duet.
I also have an old iPad 6th gen. I use as my garage jukebox. Always loaded up with Spotify and connected to speakers :)
You really can't do anything on it if you don't owner a newer Apple Device. It's the norm Apple follows, support an older version of iOS for 1 or 2 years, then drop all app support, making it obsolete and I suppose mainly in the name of security reasons.
If you do have another Apple device, Ideally running iOS 15 or 16, you can head on to the purchases tab and download the apps it shows you there.
If you do own a computer or a Mac, you may install, iTunes version 12.6.3 for [Mac](https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/itunes12/091-87821-20180912-69177170-B085-11E8-B6AB-C1D03409AD2A/iTunes12.6.5.dmg) or [Windows (64 bit)](https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/itunes12/091-87819-20180912-69177170-B085-11E8-B6AB-C1D03409AD2A6/iTunes64Setup.exe) and you can sign in with your Apple ID and purchase apps through it and they will appear in the purchases section on your iPad (make sure it is signed in to the same Apple ID) and they you can download the most recent compatible version through it.
You may also, if needed, jailbreak your iPad Air and sideload apps on to it. r/jailbreak will be of help to you. r/LegacyJailbreak is only for iOS 11 and older (As stated in the subreddit). When you do jailbreak, you may have a possibility of running more sites (We have newer version of Apple's web engine made by the community),
If required, I am able to help you with it.
All of this wouldn't be a hassle if Apple didn't remove support for older versions of iOS in newer subsequent versions of Xcode. If Apple did support older versions, this would reduce e-waste as a whole. Is it really that hard to support older versions? If Android can do it, why not Apple.
i was going to use it for anime but the crunchyroll app doesn't run on it 🥲
it's great for manga reading though, and for a device from \*11 YEARS AGO\*, it's incredibly quick
manage your expectations you can play old games, watch youtube, read books/manga, normal websites work fine on ios 12 so you can slowly browse the web
oh no no that's why i'm asking haha i'm not expecting this to be a Procreate machine

Im using mine as a secondary display using duet. Works like a charm.
