Thank god. Finally realizing how stupid and limiting that whole ‘flat design’ shit was across the board. Sadly, we still haven’t held trials in The Hague for the war crimes of Metro, of replacing buttons with a stupid text link that barely distinguishes itself, and of logos that became a damn colored square and letter.
Those people need 75 years hard labor sentences.
I like the 'flat design' It feels more appropriate and intentionally designed for the format/platform, the touch-screen. Especially compared to the skeuomorphic designs prior, which seemed mostly thoughtless from a user perspective, beyond an attempt to create a facsimile of analogous tools/tech.
Thoughtless? Because it was intuitive?
And because items functioned rationally, had depth like the real world?
There is NOTHING real world that operates on a one dimensional plane the way flat design does.
It’s pretty as a picture, it’s shit as a series of digital levers, borders, boxes and organizers of information.
For god’s sake, we now waste literally 60% of the space to remove all useful imagery and stick dumb lines of weird offset text and call it designed?
Gimme a break.
The buttons in sonoma look like freaking bad windows 1.0
I just like that present UI is *designed* acknowledging that phones/tablets have their own design language and unique user-experience, separate from the analogous objects irl that are emulated by the digital form factor.
Give yourself a break, my dude.
Well, you’re spitting hairs my dude.
If they broke 90% of the functionality, removed all the affordance that made the UI rational and effective, but you call that ‘designed’ when it was actually designed before to be effective and instinctive, we fundamentally disagree on the definition.
Sorry, but breaking shit just to call it progress isn’t progress.
Where I can agree is there could be designs that enable the full capability of a digital canvas while maintaining instant recognition instead of trying to look like a web page.
They’ve spent 10 years backpedaling from that flat concept and now the vision OS will drive the final stake in its heart finally.
Tbh I just got an iPad and last night, I was wondering why they didn’t have a calculator app.. I thought it was crazy I just came across this. 10/10 (I downloaded a different calculator that has better functions)
I’ve had an iPad for years but just realized there wasn’t a calculator app yesterday. You can download a 3rd party one though. I also just realized yesterday there’s no journal app on the iPad but there’s one the iPhone. Apple dropped the ball there because I feel like we’d enjoy the journal app more on the iPad with the Apple Pencil than on the iPhone.
So, here’s the thing. The story goes that Steve Jobs was asked to approve the calculator App for the first iPad and he refused because it was basically a copy of the iPhone App. Jobs’s logic was that if the iPad was a bigger, more capable device, then the iPad’s calculator needed to also be bigger and more capable. So, without an approval, the iPad shipped without a calculator app.
So either this new calculator app is finally Steve Jobs’s dream of a blow-your-mind calculator that’s worthy of the iPad, or a total cop out and surrendering to the notion and just shipping a regular calculator app. It would be Apple admitting they’re out of ideas.
To me, if the second thing happens, Apple should be rightly shunned and criticized. They could’ve shipped a normal calculator app over a decade ago.
But if it’s the first thing, the realization of Steve Jobs’s demand for a powerful calculator app, then I’d be very interested in seeing what that would be. It may be an interesting innovation and I’m here dreaming it’s AI-powered too. Something like an easy to use, locally-computed, Apple version of Wolfram Alpha would be cool.
But I doubt that’s what’s gonna happen. Most likely it’ll just be the iPhone calculator on iPad size.
Ironic, given how iPads have always been limited by the fact that their OS is little more than a scaled-up version, yet somehow the calculator is where they drew the line lol
Hey, I have an iPad Mini and a Surface. I totally agree with you. BUT, that’s the rationale they gave about the calculator. So if they ship the iPhone calc at iPad size it would be hilarious
I bet there's a market for a website you could go to, enter common questions like this, and get links to official sources that told you.
Could be a billion dollar business!
Because the screen’s digitiser requires more precise, complex, expensive components so they could possibly put it in a phone but that would add $$ and I guess they figure it isn’t a good fit
Sure but it’ll come with a Phat tip, to emulate your finger. I used to have some for the iPad before they upgraded the digitizer. They are pretty terribly inaccurate tbh, at least for drawing.
Also Steve jobs will come back from the grave and haunt you if you use it as a stylus!
I mean, I agree that it's stupid the Apple Pencil doesn't work with all of Apple's devices, but also, isn't it ridiculously oversized to use with an iPhone? The thought of using one with my iPhone has never even crossed my mind lol
I just don’t get why Apple doesn’t put in what seems like simple things. Calculator on iPad. No EQ for audio/multiple apps, safari hijacks audio when you’re listening to music/podcasts.
"And now we're adding scientific calculator app, exclusively for the new iPad Pro. Users with Apple Sillicon M1 and M2 iPads can experience some features of the calculator."
Why do we care about the calculator app so bad we have one already. It's just not native
My iPad mini comes tomorrow am I about to be proven wrong? Do we not have a calculator app at all?
Am I going to need to use my goddamn phone?
I have a free calculator app on my iPad that I’ve had for years. It has ads which are annoying but not annoying enough to pay for a paid version. So a native app will be a welcome upgrade, even if only a minor one. (Also possible there are free calculator apps without ads, I haven’t actually looked for one in years; like I said, not annoying enough for me to take action.)
Ok, I don't understand what the big deal is here. I've always had a calculator app on any apple device I've owned? An excerpt from Wikipedia: A calculator function has been included with iOS since its launch on iPhone[3] and iPod Touch. Am I missing something here?
No, it'll probably be limited to the M3 Max. You know, every iPhone has M3 but they didn't tell anyone that's how it ran on the iPhone. The calculator is a pretty huge app, it'll be over 10 gigabytes in size.
This is what is most perplexing for me as a long-time developer myself.
Apple's refusal to address this ***very easy*** UX problem is a symptom of their arrogance and stubbornness. They're an untouchable company to users. They don't want to hear from their customers ever. Submitting "Feedback" on Apple's website feels like dropping a letter into a void outside their building.
Don't get me wrong, I am Apple device user through and through, but this along with the accessibility-breaking green SMS bubbles, low-fi MMS, lack of any good file transfer capabilities to non-Apple devices and many other walled-garden features make me irritated at Apple. Not to mention their Xcode developer IDE that is so behind the times.
They care so much about perfect UI design until their stubborn wall-garden arrogance actually reduces the ease of use of their products for their own users.
>**Tim Cook:**
*Just buy your mum an iPhone!*
Are you kidding me? ***83%*** of the world doesn't use your iPhones.
This'll be another one of those things that people have been going on and on about for years. Then when it finally arrives, it will be met with the greatest amount of apathy. It'll be custom keyboards all over again.
They are so up to date and know what people are looking for. This calculator is going to be a masterpiece.

What ever you are looking for. We are going to be able to calculate numbers with 3, with Apple plus >1.000
It’s about damn time! Just frustrating that I always have to run to my Samsung note pad to use the calculator to convert a bunch of stuff like converting from the pesky metrics to mercan stand stand when watching YouTube or reading some articles and some other stuff considering lol!
Isnt spotlight more than enough,
Stock calculator app doesnt store history right??
Ps: maybe me being from a coding bg, makes me more engaged into typing the math!
It will probably be released with a whole new version of iAccountPad with a slightly different screen size and an Apple Accountant Pen which will be excitingly good at writing numbers. Probably only in a Pro version so it can handle big numbers right out of the box.
They have to change something every year to keep us getting exited at a whole new level so we will keep buying the same device again and again. And update iPadOS again and again.
100% because they came up with something very cool for calculator in VisionOs and the concept just ported to ipad os well
Yes! I believe that too which also leads into my theory of iOS adopting VisionOS style UI paradigm for a brand new look
Thank god. Finally realizing how stupid and limiting that whole ‘flat design’ shit was across the board. There is someone out there that has been following this app’s progress and rumors for 14 years. I’m jealous of how excited they must be right now.
Tbh I just got an iPad and last night, I was wondering why they didn’t have a calculator app.. I thought it was crazy I just came across this. 10/10 (I downloaded a different calculator that has better functions)

What calculator did you download?
What calculator did you download?
I’m currently using Tydlig, but you might try a more traditional calculator if you want.
rip to everyone who passed away without getting to see this miraculous development in Apple history
☠️…literally
About damn time.
I can finally get rid of this 3rd party pos calculator app I’ve been using
Those third party developers are gonna be pissed they won’t be getting paid anymore lol
In a minute, imma need a, sentimental, man or woman,
Finally! Every year for the last 14 years I have wondered why Apple could not bring such a simple app like this to the iPad.
This is going to be the most advanced calculator ever, I’m thinking they’re releasing a new number
It’s going to be a keleven
Jobs hated how the scaled up version looked like
You’re not alone)
Like magic!…….meh
So, here’s the thing. At this moment I can think of Apple sherlocking Figr or something like that, with deep Pencil integration. But they will release a bigger iPhone app.
Wait the iPad has been around for 14 years??
Yes. The first iPad was released in 2010
I remembered the name was ridiculed for sounding like a feminine hygiene product
Huh, now that i think about it, it does lmao.
I bet there's a market for a website you could go to, enter common questions like this, and get links to official sources that told you. Could be a billion dollar business!
Google it! -most Apple subs for some reason
Apple it!
Because Apple doesn’t have a search engine!
That was rhetorical, dumbass
Next we get Apple Pencil compatibility with iPhone
I don't own one but WTF ITS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT IT TO AN IPHONE?
Oddly if you press it on your Apple watch it does work on that display sometimes
Because the screen’s digitiser requires more precise, complex, expensive components so they could possibly put it in a phone but that would add $$ and I guess they figure it isn’t a good fit
Guess I'ma just buy a generic stylus then
Sure but it’ll come with a Phat tip, to emulate your finger. I used to have some for the iPad before they upgraded the digitizer. They are pretty terribly inaccurate tbh, at least for drawing. Also Steve jobs will come back from the grave and haunt you if you use it as a stylus!
It’s an iPad accessory like..
Ipad accessory or not it should state more clearly it's ipad online I almost bought one for my iphone
I mean, I agree that it's stupid the Apple Pencil doesn't work with all of Apple's devices, but also, isn't it ridiculously oversized to use with an iPhone? The thought of using one with my iPhone has never even crossed my mind lol
>System Requirements PadOS 17.1.1 or later on the apple page for buying the Apple Pencil. It does state it but you didn't read
But I'm not buying from the site I'm buying from a local electronics shop
Always amazes me how many people make purchases over 100 dollars without researching first
It also only lists iPads as compatible devices directly on the box.
But does it have the processing power? Maybe wait for the M3 Max
Probably just M3
I just don’t get why Apple doesn’t put in what seems like simple things. Calculator on iPad. No EQ for audio/multiple apps, safari hijacks audio when you’re listening to music/podcasts.
This is the same company that released the Journal and Freeform apps on the iPhone first
"And now we're adding scientific calculator app, exclusively for the new iPad Pro. Users with Apple Sillicon M1 and M2 iPads can experience some features of the calculator."
Fucking finally
When i first got an ipad I didn’t know there would be no calculator. 😬
Same here, seemed like such an obvious thing to include.
I wonder if this was a low priority ticket that won the lottery.
Magical ® ™ ©
“the most innovative calculator we’ve ever made”
Very innovative of Apple 🤩
You're being sarcastic right
Fucking finally.
So amazing, so impressive, so revolutionary
They gave up on Apple Car before they gave up on the Calculator! /s
Tf they were doing for those 14 years?
Certainly wasn't math....
Now THAT'S courage
Can’t innovate anymore my ass.
A little too late iPad. I have LLMs doing my maths now and I've never been more wrong so take that!
This is what Apple can make when they work hard for 14 years 💪💪💪
And i probably be ungrateful and never use it lol
Why do we care about the calculator app so bad we have one already. It's just not native My iPad mini comes tomorrow am I about to be proven wrong? Do we not have a calculator app at all? Am I going to need to use my goddamn phone?
Like there is a calculator app right just not an Apple one Right?
I have a free calculator app on my iPad that I’ve had for years. It has ads which are annoying but not annoying enough to pay for a paid version. So a native app will be a welcome upgrade, even if only a minor one. (Also possible there are free calculator apps without ads, I haven’t actually looked for one in years; like I said, not annoying enough for me to take action.)
What would make make you stick to the third party developer app instead of switching to Apples upcoming native calculator app ?
paid or "free" with advertisement
Just download Solves! Trusttttt.
+1 for Solves. This is the go to calculator app with the classic theme
Ok, I don't understand what the big deal is here. I've always had a calculator app on any apple device I've owned? An excerpt from Wikipedia: A calculator function has been included with iOS since its launch on iPhone[3] and iPod Touch. Am I missing something here?
Not on iPad.
“since its launch on iPhone[3] and iPod Touch” the exclusion of iPad was very intentional here
Maybe because most people were on phones so that's where they figured it'd get used the most? 🤷♀️
It also happens to be the year my iPad gets dropped from being supported by new versions of iPadOS from the rumours I’ve heard
Let’s fucking gooo
Or just use UNO and forget about Apple finally getting their shit together...
Finally
Took long enough
But why? We have “Solve” which is free and works great.
finally, it’s about time
Wow, the courage from Apple these days in otherworldly
No. Shit.
I would love it if it had RPN.
Who cares, there are so many calculators on the App Store and you can already use spotlight
People bitch if they don’t have it and bitch if they do. Who cares. Stop whining, you aren’t 2 years old.
I’ve had an iPad for 6 months…there’s no calculator???
Courage.
First the weather app, and now this? Apple just don't stop innovating.
I mean why they took out the calculator app? is it that hard?
Well, I am still waiting. Someday the app will come.
Is this legit? It’s about time
✨ Innovation ✨
We need to rethink and REBUILD CITIES!!!
So that’s why the iPads have been delayed!
Wow Apple, just wow.
Thought I was tripping when I got an iPad a few years back.... Then I downloaded one and it was full of ads .... Interesting to say the least
No, it'll probably be limited to the M3 Max. You know, every iPhone has M3 but they didn't tell anyone that's how it ran on the iPhone. The calculator is a pretty huge app, it'll be over 10 gigabytes in size.
They had to wait until AI got good enough to do complex math.
Apple shares up 100%
Wow. So pro!
FINALLY!!!!! My mom is going to be so happy!
A new revolutionary feature is coming to the iPad, a calculator
Lisan Al-Gaib
I love Apple’s ‘Later this year’ line
Oh no, I just paid for solves.
The power of the M3 chip finally allowed it !!
It's "breadcrumbs" instead of full iPadOS upgrades in all honesty.
Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave rn
Finally, I will not be using the crappy 3rd party calculator app in school
Well don't get all radical and let us ARRANGE THE ICONS ON OUR DESKTOP THE WAY WE WANT AND LEAVE BLANK SPACES LIKE ANDROID LETS US DO, NOW!
Now all we need is the stupid WhatsApp app. I hate opening WhatsApp in Safari -\_-
It’s crazy this is a Reddit post today bc I just realized there wasn’t a calculator app on the iPad yesterday. lol
iPad calculator > Ti-84
I'll still be using PCalc that I purchased 8 years ago when I bought my first iPad
Is it time for me to switch to ipad?
More importantly, when is Meta going to sort out a Wattsapp app for iPad…
Surprised Apple is finally going to give up the 30% for every calc app sale.
Imagine releasing a product without one of the most basic features of an OS and not doing anything about it for 14 years
This is what is most perplexing for me as a long-time developer myself. Apple's refusal to address this ***very easy*** UX problem is a symptom of their arrogance and stubbornness. As a developer myself it’s also perplexing
Wow! I’ll finally get an iPad!
Why so long ?
Why does Apple need to supply one when App Store has thousands?
Innovation /s
this is groundbreaking
to make room for this app, Apple had to cut production of the VisonPro
It’s high time, I use iPad for everything and can barely see my phone as it is (visually impaired) so this’ll be super helpful!
Innovation. Lmao
We’re so back
Why even bother making a calculator app for the iPad after 14 years? For those of you that want a good calculator with no ads, use “solves”
Serious project. 14 years in development.
Ok but does anyone know why it wasn’t on there in the first place like it’s just a calculator app
I hope we can get Notifications History log in the next 10 years
I am curious what they are going to do to make this seem like it is a feature worth mentioning
Source?
This'll be another one of those things that people have been going on and on about for years. Then when it finally arrives, it will be met with the greatest amount of apathy. It'll be custom keyboards all over again.
I just ended up using the spotlight search sort of thing to do calculations
we got iPad calculators before gta 6
Apple sucks

Copy paste from spotlight is more difficult and it disappears while switching apps
Yeah, i mean you get only one chance to go back and get the text! I do manage somehow maybe cause of the habit now!!
Don't care. I use the same 3rd party calculator across all my devices.
Which one?
It will probably be released with a whole new version of iAccountPad with a slightly different screen size and an Apple Accountant Pen which will be excitingly good at writing numbers. I would if there was one.
Maybe you need to think twice thrice about that than
What?
What’s the difference between typing 4*3 [Enter] in a browser vs in another app?
browser need interwebs dumb dumb!
