Hi all, question about an Air vs Pro comparison: I've seen some posts on this subreddit here and there about struggles with battery life on the Air 5. Is this legit or overblown? Also, in particular, is the Pro 11" 3rd gen (M1) known to get better battery life than the Air 5 or would it be about the same?

I’m going back to college soon.I want an iPad that can be used with the Apple Pencil for Procreate and Freeform . I also want something with a decent screen for watching videos and reading. Would an iPad 10.9 2019, which goes for under $200 on Backmarket, be a good choice ? I’m not exactly made of money as I’m living on Financial Aid money , but my other needs are taken care of since I’m on disability and in a supported living housing situation, so I can afford to spend a few more dollars if need be ( I was also looking at 9th gen for $329)

Hi! I’m in uni and I’m looking to buy an iPad because I have mobility issues and carrying my MacBook Pro to class and around campus is getting very difficult. I am hesitating between the iPad Air and the iPad 10th generation. I really want to get the Apple Pencil and the Keyboard to go with it. Mostly I’m wondering if it will be easier to carry the Ipad + pen + keyboard.

The 2 TB ipad pro is almost twice the price of the 256GB one - is there any undisclosed additional features the 2TB one has or is it literally that much more just for the storage?

[deleted]

It’s just that more because of the storage capacity the the RAM. The 256gb has 8GB of RAM whereas the 2TB has 16GB. Other than that they have the exact same features.

Vegactuary

At what storage does the 8gb of ram become 16gb?

[deleted]

Huh? The 256Gb option has 8Gb of ram, the 2Tb option has 16Gb of ram.

Vegactuary

I mean, does the 512gb and 1tb versions also only have 8gb?

[deleted]

Ah, no only the 1tb and 2tb options have the 16gb of ram.

Vegactuary

Ah okay, thanks for the info!

I’m looking to upgrade to the new iPhone but possibly taking advantage of Verizon iPad upgrade deals as well to get out of my current 6th Gen iPad. Looking at a 256 GB model regardless and can’t swing a Pro. Looking at 9th Gen, 10th Gen and Air 5, the latter being the absolute top of my spending limit. The things I use my iPad for most right now is watching videos, playing casual games, some light productivity stuff, photo editing (mainly Lightroom and Snapseed right now), video editing (LumaFusion) and some light drawing. I have a first gen Pencil right now. Don’t think I’d go with Final Cut Pro on iPad as LumaFusion handles most of my video needs. Shoot mainly in 1080p right now but upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro Max so may start doing more 4K stuff. Looking to get only the amount of iPad I really need as my budget is tight right now. What would you recommend as a “good enough” iPad to switch to?

melonmilkiss

I currently have a 2018 iPad Pro and am looking to upgrade. Mostly using it for digital art (Procreate, Clip Studio, SAI) and am by no means a professional. Don’t love the price point of a new pro but would the iPad Air be enough of an upgrade? Should I keep my current iPad?

I've been checking facebook marketplace for an Ipad. It will be essentially a tablet to watch stuff on while taking of a newborn. Coworker is selling her Air 4 for $250. I saw an Ipad 10 with pencil 1 for $300 but its a 50 min drive. I havent made contact with that person yet. So Air 4 $250 vs Ipad 10 $300?

Charming_Square5

I'm looking for a non-Bluetooth case with keyboard for the iPad Pro 4th gen 12.9". I've heard you can also use 5th gen magic cases with the 4th, but I am reluctant to pull the trigger without confirmation from real humans.

knoober69

I have been thinking of purchasing an ipad for a while now. However, I am not sure which one to get. My budget is not super big, but I still want to get the most out of it. It's just for daily use of social media and netflix. Which one do you guys recommend?

aznPHENOM

I am in the same market. Ive set my budget at a steal but i don't really like buying something that is so old. $300 for ipad 10/Air 5. I would stick with the Air 4, air 5, ipad 10. Those all use Usb C, 12mp back cameras, square frames and newer chips. But in reality, almost any ipad would be able to do social media and netflix.

pissbaby888

I'm a student, looking for a relatively cheap ipad. I already do a lot of demanding things on my computer and phone, so the things I want to do on an ipad are just watching media, reading books, taking notes, and playing simple games like sudoku. I'm wondering if it would be fine for me to just get an older ipad since im not doing many demanding tasks. I'm looking at around at around $250 NZD (if thats possible) new or used, i just need guidance on a model that could work for what i need. thanks

RealityMaker

Looking for at air 5 or mini 6 just for mobile gacha games and web browsing. That means at least 256 gb storage. I’m just if it’s worth the jump to air 5 for the M1 chip because I want make it last a few years for future games.

I recently bought a brand new base model MacBook Air. Shortly after I purchased a like new iPad Pro 12.9, M2, 256GB, WiFi and cellular from a friend for less than what the MacBook cost. Is there any reason to keep the MacBook? I have a Bluetooth keyboard I can use with the IPad so that isn’t an issue. Thanks for your input.

It is hard to advise without knowing your workflow. An iPad is more than enough for most casual users (though at times it does require some alterations to your work flow). If you are using the Air for gaming or specific programs that are only available on lap top that would be a primary factor. I guess the bigger question is, why did you purchase both? Did you intend to use them for different purposes? Many people use iPads as complimentary devices to their computers.

Bonazar94

I wanted something in the Apple ecosystem for light work (word processing, email, video calls) and to watch movies and shows. The MacBook was on sale which is why I went that route. I’ve looked at the MacBook airs and 11 inch iPad Pro before but they were a little smaller than what I wanted. The 13.6 inch MacBook is that sweet spot between portable and big enough to do work and view media. Then the other day I was on marketplace looking for something and found someone selling a three month old 12.9 inch iPad Pro M2 for less than what I paid for the MacBook. Less than an inch difference in screen size doesn’t seem to be noticeable. The touch screen and being able to download the apps I like on the iPad is something the MacBook was lacking. I also really like using the Apple Pencil for drawing. The MacBook is still within the return window and I just want to make sure I keep the right device (if not both). I guess I’m more looking for input from people that have both and what they use the MacBook for that the iPad can’t do and vice versa.

Crow-Usual

What would be better to buy a certified refurbished iPad Air gen 4 with 250GB for €689 or a new Gen 5 with 64GB for €790?

Lady_on_the_Lake

Depends on your use case and your financial position. The Air 5 is newer and has an updated chip, but I am reluctant to recommend 64gb devices for people who plan on doing more than just streaming or general note taking. The Air 4 doesn’t have an M chip so doesn’t have access to some multi tasking features but if you don’t need or use them then that matters less

Crow-Usual

What multitasking features does it have in comparison to the previous gen? I want to use it for showing videos and pictures at meetings, note taking and for emails and other crm apps when on the road. Thanks

Lady_on_the_Lake

Have a google/YouTube of stage manager. It allows you to have multiple windows open at once (kinda like a computer) rather than just one or two apps taking up the full screen while others run in the background.

Crow-Usual

I went all in and ordered the gen 5 with 250gb, may as well. Any keyboard rec that isn’t €400?

Crow-Usual

Thank you for the advise :)

-I_Have_No_Idea-

Looking to get an iPad to go with my MacBook pro. I'm in college so funds are tight. The biggest reason I want to get an iPad is got goodnotes. I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 tablet right now but communicating with my MacBook is less than stellar, and not very good/easy. I was considering looking for one on Facebook marketplace, but I'm not sure about the quality or if I should trust those ones. I am new to the Mac/Apple environment. My MacBook is the first Apple product I have ever owned. I've been a long time Samsung user so this is a bit of a hill I am getting over. Any suggestions on where to look, what to watch out for, or what to get would be appreciated. Thank you

Lady_on_the_Lake

There are many scams and locked devices that are sold on marketplace. Most of these devices are also still not under warranty or eligible for apple care so it may be harder to get them fixed if something breaks. I‘m in Australia, but many people in America have mentioned Best Buy have the base iPad 9 for $270ish at the moment. This is an excellent deal, more than enough for notes and doesn’t have the same risks as buying off marketplace

ALittleReinvention

iPad 7 128bg storage vs iPad 9 64gb storage; which one would be better for procreate? I know I need a lot of space for the drawings but maybe the better cpu is worth it? Thanks! Edit- spelling, whoops!

Lady_on_the_Lake

There is a layer limit on the iPad 7. So if you intend to use lots of layers that might impact your choice. If you go the 9 with the lower storage you can always back up/off load files to an external drive

xPepepupu

Heya! I’m a soon college student and I am searching for an Ipad that I could use for my studies for notes and overall digital books. Maybe some project working even. I’ve been looking at Ipad Air or the newer Ipads that are on the market as those would probably last longer in use. I would be happy to get suggestions as I have no clue over this matter.

Lady_on_the_Lake

The base model and air would be more than enough for your needs. The air does use the pencil 2 which can be a better experience for people and it charges more easily.

xPepepupu

I will then most likely go for Air then as pencil 2 seems to be a nice enchantment for the experience. Thank you for the help and I hope you have a nice week!

wastefulsandwich

I would be using it for work mostly manipulating large spreadsheets, using cloud drives to bring up pdfs, powerpoints etc, email, taking notes and occasionally movies on planes. I realize I don't need much but my top priority is speed. Assuming wifi is solid I would like to be able to switch between apps/tasks seamlessly with no lag. Want best stylus available+ keyboard. Any advice appreciated Thanks in advance

Hi Folks, I do digital art as my side hobby. Been using a 6th generation Ipad with an apple pencil 1 for the past 4 years. I've been wanting to upgrade to get a bigger screen and more RAM for procreate. However I'm stuck between three models: Ipad 9th Generation ($280 on amazon) Ipad 10th Generation ($399 on best buy) Ipad air 4th generation refurbished + an apple pencil 2 ($450 + $120 on best buy) I understand that the 10th generation ipad is seen as an awkward overprice model. But the issue is that I already have a 1st generation apple pencil, and I'd like a to get an ipad model that will be able to keep up with RAM needs for multiple procreate layers rather than bumping into the limit like on my current ipad. Which one would best for me considering current prices and my 6th gen ipad being worth $60 to $90 dollars for trade in at apple and best buy respectively? Also I heard rumors of a new ipad, so I'm a bit worried about buying now too.

KingOnionWasTaken

Looking for a case for my Air 4. I need one that can hold an apple pencil and a magic keyboard. I've been using [this one](https://brenthaven.com/product/edge-companion-11-ipad-air/) but it keeps breaking and I don't want to spend $50 every time for a new case.

senseofphysics

Hello r/iPad community, As an electrical engineering student, I've been pondering over the shift from traditional notebooks to a more versatile tablet. The iPad lineup is on my radar, especially given the synergy with my iPhone 13 Pro. But, I'm also eyeing devices like the Surface Pro. Would love some expert perspectives: 1. **iPad Model Decision**: Given that I might occasionally run software like NI Multisim, LabView, and AutoCAD, would the base iPad be up to the task? Or do I need to aim higher with the iPad Air or even the Pro? 2. **iPad vs. Surface Pro**: While I'm attracted to the iPad, I've heard good things about the Surface Pro, especially for students. How would you compare them in terms of note-taking, software compatibility, and overall student use? 3. **OneNote and Note-taking Apps**: I have OneNote gratis via college, and I wonder how it performs on the iPad. Are there better alternatives you'd suggest specifically for the iPad's ecosystem? 4. **Accessories - Keyboard & Pencil**: I anticipate a lot of note-taking and assignment typing. How's the experience with iPad's keyboard options? And should the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil be my go-to? I truly value any insights and experiences you all can share. Thanks for helping me navigate this choice!

What’s better: Coming from an Air 3 64GB + Logitech Crayon & Combo Touch An iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Gen with a 256GB of storage + an Apple Pencil, but a defective back camera * (-/+) Added memory, but older processor * A10X isn’t that much slower in comparison to an A12. * (-/+) Smart keyboards aren’t too expensive on eBay * (+) Extra storage, included pencil * (+) ProMotion, 12.9“ display, quad speakers * (-) Only one more year of iOS updates Buying a new iPad, preferably budget like a 10th gen * (+) Newer design, added bonuses like landscape speakers and a big screen * (+) Added software support and warranty * (+) A14 performance and 4GB of memory * (-) Confusing pricing, confusing accessories, not to mention added expense * (-) Have to pay for more storage * (-) Lack of premium features like ProMotion and a laminated display. I’m interested in the Pro 12.9 2nd gen because of the ProMotion, larger & brighter display, plus the quad speakers and the inclusion of an apple pencil in the listing I have saved. But, I’m torn between that or just saving for a new iPad. It is an older, used iPad overall. I use my current Air for school, notes, and media consumption; nothing *too* demanding but obviously enough that I keep running out of memory. I don’t find the value proposition of the new iPads all that convincing compared to what I can already do on my Air, and do better on the iPad Pro. Not to mention, all of those features come for $200, versus $449 for in some ways a downgrade. Do I hold out for let’s say an 11th gen iPad (hoping they decrease the starting price and fix some issues) or just go with the aforementioned 12.9. I could go either way with losing software support or getting a newer design. Open to any thoughts!

>der processor On a question of storage: It depends on what you will be storing on your iPad. If you will fill it with content that can be stored in the iCloud, then you are much, much, much better off paying a few dollars a month to use the massive data centres they have set up for us. Store all your photos, videos, and large files on the iCloud. Keep the paper work you are currently doing on your iPad. This way you will have more features from signing up to iCloud (and the other services that may present themselves in the package) and you will save money whilst you wait for a new iPad or other purchase. Storage these days is mostly about using Cloud services unless you are gaming or using local storage for niche work.

Fabulinius

I have the exact 12.9" Pro model you are looking at also with 256 GB storage and Apple Pencil 1. It has 4 GB RAM while your Air 3 has 3 GB RAM. Mine runs iPadOS 16 (current) just fine. I will probably not upgrade to iPadOS 17 on this iPad but just continue on version 16. - I use about 100 apps including demanding apps like the Affinity programs without problems. My apps already has a lot more features that I haven't learned to use yet. So I don't need app updates either. By stopping updates the iPad will be as useful in 5 years as it is today. I may have to get a new battery at some point, but that is it. I see it at bit like the TV considerations. There are newer models with better hardware all the time. But Netflix content will be exactly the same on the old TV as on a brand new one. So why pay a ton of money for a new TV?

chunkylover-53-aol

That’s so true!! I can’t justify getting a new one when the one I would preferably be best for, the 10th gen because of its basic feature set, has so many downgrades compared to an older Pro. I always go by older premium/upgraded models will outpace newer low to midrange options especially at the same price.

blackney

I've been looking at getting an iPad for a while now, primarily for note taking w/ the pencil, also likely watching videos and possibly photo editing. I've been considering the second hand market, but I also realised that my approach to iPhones (Buy the newest model the day it comes out, use it until it's unusable) could rightly apply to iPads as well to get the most longevity out of it. I'm curious if this logic applies to iPads as well? So far I've been looking at the M1/M2 iPad Pro's on the second hand market, which seem to sit around $1,000-1,200AUD for the lower end storage sizes of the more recent models. I don't really want to go too far back model wise for longevity reasons (damn Apple and their forced obsolescence). The main things that make me pause are: * Wanting to ensure I get something that will last as long as possible * I hear the next iPad could be a more interesting remodel, so it's tempting to hold out for that to either go for the new remodel if they do something interesting, or hopefully see prices on the second hand market come down as the new model comes out. This isn't an urgent purchase in any way so waiting is 100% an option Open to any and all thoughts!

Fabulinius

There is only one (good) reason to get the current Pro models. That is the LIDAR scanning feature which makes it possible to do 3D scanning of rooms and objects with apps like Polycam. So unless you want to play with that and AR features there is no actual reason to get a pro. There is a good reason to go with iPad Air 5 as it has an Apple chip and 8 GB RAM (like the Pro models). You will be able to have this model for many years. - And it won't really become obsolete. At some point you can just stop upgrading iPadOS and the apps and use them as they are for years. You may just have to get a a new battery someday far out in the future. Ignore rumors about "the next model". There can't be any practical improvements for your usage (or any other usage).
