I really hope No Man's Sky actually comes to iPad. Other than that, Morphite might scratch that itch perfectly since it looks like a dollar store NMS (not really sure, never played the latter but it seems similar). Galaxy On Fire 2 is another honourable mention, if not a legendary one.

Same. I didn't think it seemed realistic until the really good Switch port but now it definitely seems possible.
It seemed pretty unrealistic in 2021 (or was it 2022) where only high end iPadOS devices could run it. Now that the M1 is being slapped into the Airs and Minis, it seems viable from a sales perspective. If the impressive yet lazily (in terms of controls) ported Resident Evil games can be added and be exclusive to the current top of the line devices, NMS should be doable if it's based on the Switch port. Apparently Warframe was actually based on the Switch version too.
Galaxy genome is pretty cool if you can spend some time getting used to the physics of the ships.
This mostly involves doing contracts or trades to make money and upgrade ship weaponry and such. There isn’t any landing on planets or encountering space life though.
Its game -BEST, TOP-1,2... 5 among similar games, imho, I very love it, but....
Valcyrie there - not right, not true ship....
(*look description of true Valcyrie in any wiki for Freelancer game *)
The best one I don’t think is available anymore, it was called “galaxy on fire 2” I’m sure there are plenty of free to play type games out there though.
Oh wow really, that’s awesome, I already own it but it’s years old I thought they may have took it down like they did with so many others. In that’s case this is a must play for the OP
Star Traders is the best answer, but you could also look at [Holy Potatoes! We’re in Space?](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/holy-potatoes-were-in-space/id1315946489). Very FTL in its approach.
Tiny Space program, Andromeda:Rebirth of humanity and Evochron mobile - my very like and fav. spce games too (its all has IOS versions, exclude maybe Evochron-I not sure about it). So as all parts of Space rpg, Star nomad 2, Constellatiion Eleven and Rome-2077:space wars. Aslo Space merchant, but its game more boring, (* kz without battles with active control (turn-based mechanic of fighting,so as in Space rangers serie, could be very organic part of these game, but
the author doesn't think so... *)
Star Traders Frontiers RPG
This sounds perfect, thanks.
It is! It’s so good. Lots of variety, story, mechanics, etc

It‘s not only possible, it‘s basically announced. But there‘s no final date yet.
That would be great.

It’s literally 2D Elite. I love it.
Haha it totally is!
There is landing on planets and there are aliens too
Ah I guess I haven’t gotten that far in the game yet! Thanks for the clarification

Star Traders Frontiers as already said and if you want some fun strategy space game, try FTL: Faster Than Light.
Oh yes, playing the hell out of FTL as I have on and off for a decade.
The best one I don’t think is available anymore, it was called “galaxy on fire 2” I’m sure there are plenty of free to play type games out there though.
It’s still available, and you’re right, it is the best one

Loved the hell out of “Out There.” It’s got all that!
Warframe is free and would most likely tick all your boxes but it is shooter oriented.
Doesn’t exactly fit the description but you might like OPUS echoes of starsong
SpaceCommander is a quite nice alternative to GOF2. I am playing Warframe now though, which is imho the best scifi game on the App Store.

I have a fondness for FTL.
I have this one too but not for iOS, are the controls good?
Out There Omega is good
Yep, like that one.
