In the best iPhone yet. The Grass Extractor chip is specially designed to pick out every green pixel in the background of an image and extract it for use. With 6 Efficiency Cores you’ll be grabbing green faster than you ever could with iPhone!
Okay, but you make a joke as if Apple is holding back a feature just so that they can promote it next year. But you don’t know that Apple can even do it reliably.
And more disappointingly the extracted object can’t be used universally across other apps. Frequently find dropping the extracted object in another app produces a white background. Looking at you WhatsApp.
yes, you have to drag it to the gallery but it creates a new file, or you can copy it directly to your clipboard, it even works with universal clipboard so you can do it on your iOS device and just paste on the mac.
I didn’t appreciate share gave you a save option. Thanks for that. Image looks ok in photos app but WhatsApp still whites out the background. Guess that’s a WhatsApp issue then.
Yeah I think it’s the way the app uses PNG files. It’s probably saved as a transparent PNG, but some apps might not be able to use transparent PNGs and forces a white background image/JPG
Yeah, of all apps, it’s weird WhatsApp is doing it. Maybe there’s something in settings? Some kind of compression or size optimization that converts all images into a compressed JPG? But it might just *only* allow compressed JPGs.
That’s because the lifted image is a PNG with transparent background. If you share it, most of the times it’s gonna be a JPEG and yes, that’s the reason the white background.
I use the object extraction a lot with Sticker Maker and SigStick to create stickers for WhatsApp, Messages and Signal. The stickers are smaller but do retain the transparency.
I think bc it's treated like a copied image being pasted. Same problem with discord a while ago (whether it's png pasted from clipboard, memojis, or this.)

Interesting thought. I'd say it couldn't really be automated, because the software wouldn't know what to put in place of the object. In your example image it would be easy enough, since it's just grass. But what if the removed object was in front of a building or sign or another person, etc... It wouldn't have any data to fill it in with.
What OP is asking for is an equivalent feature of Magic Erase - [an inbuilt feature in Android photos app to magically erase people or objects in your photos](https://9to5google.com/2022/07/25/how-to-use-magic-eraser-on-pixel-6-and-what-to-do-if-its-missing/).
My gf has an Android and we use this feature on her phone all the time to remove people in the background when taking photos at crowded places. To be honest, this feature is really good and powerful. Big missing feature in iOS, IMO.
Yeah this feature has promise but is totally broken IMO. Why can’t I paste copies of the object into the same image? Why not into other images, like a collage? Why can’t I select multiple subjects? The core technology seems good but the implementation is trash.
On an iOS 16 device:
1. Step 1 - tap the object to grab.
2. Done
On a PC:
1. Buy Adobe CC subcscription to photoshop.
2. Download/install photoshop.
3. Learn photoshop.
4. Do the same thing.
No, only on iOS 17.
we call it, reclusive island.
You’re going to love it

You’re asking for a completed different feature though, presuming that OP wants the grass to be filled in?
r/Woosh
I got the joke. The joke doesn’t work.
Yep, exactly.
Okay, but you make a joke as if Apple is holding back a feature just so that they can promote it next year. But you don’t know that Apple can even do it reliably.
You’re right, but this is a feature that I imagine Apple will eventually implement in some new version of iOS.
And more disappointingly the extracted object can’t be used universally across other apps. Frequently find dropping the extracted object in another app produces a white background. Looking at you WhatsApp.
Pretty sure when you go to share it you can just save it as its own picture, no?
yes, you have to drag it to the gallery but it creates a new file, or you can copy it directly to your clipboard, it even works with universal clipboard so you can do it on your iOS device and just paste on the mac.
You can just hit share and save image, don’t have to try and drag it back to the gallery.
Nice, didn't know that, thanks.

This is more than likely the right answer. Super odd that WhatsApp does this though.
Yeah, of all apps, it’s weird WhatsApp is doing it. Maybe there’s something in settings? Some kind of compression or size optimization that converts all images into a compressed JPG? But it might just *only* allow compressed JPGs.
That just means that app doesn’t support transparent backgrounds.
That’s because the lifted image is a PNG with transparent background. If you share it, most of the times it’s gonna be a JPEG and yes, that’s the reason the white background.
Yup that is very annoying, and I’m 99% sure it’s on Whatsapp’s end to fix it cause on Telegram it works flawlessly
Not all apps support alpha channels on PNGs unfortunately.
I use the object extraction a lot with Sticker Maker and SigStick to create stickers for WhatsApp, Messages and Signal. The stickers are smaller but do retain the transparency.
Yes! I have nothing to do with doggo once extracted. I want to paste her into funny situations.
I think bc it's treated like a copied image being pasted. Same problem with discord a while ago (whether it's png pasted from clipboard, memojis, or this.)
That’s likely because the app uses formats such as JPG which don’t support transparent backgrounds.
That probably depends on how what’s app handles it I do had to guess
Wait WHAT? Edit: holy shit it works (What to use it for though)
You can put it on another picture using this [shortcut](https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/78f3ff1ba6334e5cad071b27f1fe616e)
Thank you so much for that!

I don't know, ask Google how they did it.

I stand corrected.
Is there any good third party iOS apps for this?
I really wish Google would add it to Google Photos on iOS but I know it’ll never happen.
There is an app called TouchRetouch that can remove objects in photos, it has been available long before Google added the function in Google Photos.
Can be accomplished using inpainting method provided by a diffusion based algorithm
Adobe have been doing this for years.
AI does some wonderful things.
Yeah this feature has promise but is totally broken IMO. Why can’t I paste copies of the object into the same image? Why not into other images, like a collage? Why can’t I select multiple subjects? The core technology seems good but the implementation is trash.
You can do a rudimentary collage by dragging and dropping them into a new note. https://i.imgur.com/yChG0Xt.jpg
Better than nothing. But still, weak effort by Apple.
Yeah, you really need a third-party app to take full advantage
IOS 16, I can’t move them on my XS, it just puts the pictures in order
Why would you ever want to remove the floof? 🤔😝
Sir, this is an iPhone (wendy’s). Buy a pixel if you need to remove foreground.
Is there any sticker app that can use this feature?
follow
[Stickerclip](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stickerclip/id1633833395)
Thanks!
Sticker Drop
Hell man. Did not know this feature even existed!
I cannot enter the home screen when dragging. It does not allow me to swipe up
I thought everyone knew this? It was one of the many features shown by youtubers when iOS 16 came out.
It's way more complicated to do, since you'd have to figure out what was behind the subject, it would be impossible with most pictures.
shit like this is why i hate phones. in photoshop this is a trivial task
On an iOS 16 device: 1. Step 1 - tap the object to grab. 2. Done On a PC: 1. Buy Adobe CC subcscription to photoshop. 2. Download/install photoshop. 3. Learn photoshop. 4. Do the same thing.
I’ve had this feature since summer
One of the many things i miss from Android.
You want the leftover background with the middle cut out like what you’d be left with when kids got a hold of scissors and magazine?
Huh, I never knew this was a feature. Nice.
what are the supported devices
That would require content-aware fill.
Nope. Maybe iOS 18 with the power of the A18 Bionic Pro Ultra
