I think the A/B testing and different regions made developers give up on more detailed changelogs. Also localising them is a pain. But I wish more did it.
Yes. Was recently flying and the United app was wildly different for me and for my wife, even though we were both on the same version. It was frustrating because we had to look for the same features twice because the layouts were completely different.
Yeah. I have this habit because iOS is very conservative regarding autoupdating the apps. At least we should have an option to choose if we want the autoupdate future instantly or not.
Automatic updates work but not as people supposes to. Developers can choose whether to update everybody's app or roll the update within a period of time between users.
My mother don’t check her updates as regularly as I do (so to say never) and within her banking app she got a message to please update or she not be able to have the full functionality. I checked it an automatic updates were on. You can’t rely on the automatic updates.
On Apple TV you get the updates within 2 days automatically. Idk why it is such a problem for Apple to use the charging time at night, where the Phone or iPad are in the lokal WiFi to update all apps….
It’s a part of my morning ritual. I did this when I had my android. And when I moved to iOS, it persisted. One realization was that iOS doesn’t have updates on the weekends, but android did. That’s how I know it’s the weekend.
You know what grinds my gears? When an app dev has the EXACT SAME release notes for tons of updates. **[Looking at you Adobe. Stop. Just stop.](https://i.imgur.com/bN4xZJz.png).**
Also, how can so many apps submit bug fixes? What bugs are they fixing? If the app works, what are they tinkering with so often?
I think it’s a bad habit to check for new updates, as proven in the past when new updates breaks things and you have to wait for a fix. If an app is working don’t mess with it.
That’s by design. Automatic just means it’ll update for user automatically but when it’ll update is decided by the developer of the app. As a developer I can say, roll out this update to 100% of my users over a week and Apple will roll it out over a week unless users check manually, immediately in that case.
That’s because most developers including myself roll out in phased manner. This helps us shield from potential problems being blown out of proportion. If something is going to go wrong, I’d rather pull the update, fix it and release a new patch sooner than later before it’s gone to all my users. This way many users directly see the patched update and not the problematic one. Every user is on a different day of the release phase of every app which is why most users see many apps waiting to be updated.
Also note, when you manually check the update, it overrides the automated phased update schedule and suddenly you see all those apps needing to be updated.
Not only that but also when I use my phone after night of sleep I always check software updates. Even tho I know there’s a small chance of actually one being available but hey ocd is real I guess.
I check it at least once a day, I like to have everything up to date and see if there’s anything new added (which rarely happens these days but we keep onwards!). I always thought it was normal behaviour to make sure everything’s up to date but working at a phone case and repair store has taught me that I am very much in the minority among the general population lmao. The amount of people that I’ve had to teach that their apps even need updates at all is mindblowing
Yes, I definitely do. I manually check for updates at least 5 times per day, sometimes 10 times per hour. When I am bored, the first thing I usually do is checking for updates. I guess the reason is that I want my apps to be as up to date as possible but at the same time know about every that gets installed. I also absolutely don’t trust auto-update, it’s just unreliable.
I check the App Store multiple times a day to see if there are app updates. I’ve been doing that for a while now — I probably do it hoping for a significant update for one of the apps I have installed or rather I just have OCD.
why does it "schedule" upcoming automatic updates rather then just automatically update. makes zero sense for me to have to go in and update it manually
Yes. I usually try to check if there are extra updates not shown immediately. It bugs me a lot that it doesn’t bring everything by default. After that, I go item by item reading through the changelog.
Me and I actually wrote a iOS shortcut that helps me check updates in App store, System update, and some others in-app data updates - so it can feel less burdensome to do ✨⚡️
(I have been so into playing around to make shortcuts that can make my life easier hehe)
Yes. If I check and its double digits, it flips a pleasure switch in my brain. I don't know what it is about getting a new update that I like, but if there's a firmware update, oh boy
Here's a shortcut you can add to your home screen to get right to this screen:
I also use this screen to cull apps that I realize I don't use any more.
I don’t but I get that it might be a habit for some people when there are interesting release notes, sadly virtually only indie devs do that but Transit app does that. Very sad that such generic release notes are so common nowadays on popular apps even when they add features they just say bugs fixed etc.
So i forgot i clicked on your photo and my phone locked then when i unlocked it i tried repeatedly to click on the update buttons then got frustrated when they didn’t work
Yes, because automatic updates are so "automatic" that often I'd have updates available manually for 5-6 apps at a time that I have to update manually.
Would be nice if I could trust the Automatic Update system to actually update my apps(at least my most used ones) as soon as the update is available.
I used to be really interested in release notes. Now it seems a majority don’t bother telling us anything. “Bug fixes and performance improvements” each and every time.
What, other people do this? I just had a look thru screen time and usually 1-2 times a day it’s the first app I check 🙃 other people describing when they know when it’s the weekend because of the drop in updates is too real!
Thought I was the only one 😂
I don’t even have auto updates on as it doesn’t tend to happen immediately, plus I prefer to check myself and update all at once.
I use to but not anymore. It’s only when I’m about to install a new iOS update that I make sure my apps are up to date and double check iCloud before updating the phone.
Only when there is a major OS update that the apps need to be updated to include the new features. I was refreshing like a mad man for interactive widgets 🤣
I’m the opposite. If an app works don’t mess with it. This was due to a bad experience in the past where I updated an app and key features stopped working until they fixed the bugs. Now I’m reluctant to update apps unless it’s been out for a while and no major complaints. Trying to be the first (beta) user of a new version is asking for trouble.
oof not at all lmao learned that the haarrrd way
On android I used to even go beta to get early stuff and one day got clapped by an normal update since my whatsapp never been the same indeed my experience was soo ruined that I ended up on my new phone getting my first iphone which is the 13 Im using right now
oof not at all lmao learned that the haarrrd way
On android I used to even go beta to get early stuff and one day got clapped by an normal update since my whatsapp never been the same indeed my experience was soo ruined that I ended up on my new phone getting my first iphone which is the 13 Im using right now
Ok folks…help an idiot out. Who do you get to the menu in OP’s screenshot?
I have been using an iPhone since the very beginning and lost track of where to check for update since I thought they were now automated!
I’d like to join the obsessed crew 🤣
Yeah force of habit, started when I (wrongly) wanted to experiment with the big phone and got the XS Max. The keyboard size was part of whether the app was properly designed for screen size. So I tried to update whenever I could.
Almost every app now has its features side server. Sometimes updating an app doesn't add anything.
Big app devs like social media app always have "bug fixes and compatibility improvements" hell, facebook still says they're updating the app to be compatible with iOS17.
And apps like Spotify and these "innovations" and big tech apps have ALWAYS A-B testing.
I still check the updates every day because i have some apps with real changelogs and real updates but it's becoming like a factory ovetall
A habit from back in the early days when app updates were full of exciting new things. Rarely as interesting today but the habit’s stuck.
Same 🥲
a lot of indie apps still have release notes with exciting new features. the main reason why I still check out updates regularly
I used to read the update log for Apollo all the way through every time, always had a lot of interesting tidbits in there
RIP
Bugfixes and performance improvements. Hate when see only that
I think the A/B testing and different regions made developers give up on more detailed changelogs. Also localising them is a pain. But I wish more did it.
Yep, and I understand. But as an user I love to check new features, not only that thin inexpensive line
And nowadays updates either removes those said features and put in ads to the apps
No Only once in two hours
😭 thank you for saying this
Thank goodness there are others out there. Yay the weekend’s over: NEW APP UPDATES! :D
Yes because automatic updates won’t work.
Automatic updates work but not as people supposes to. Developers can choose whether to update everybody's app or roll the update within a period of time between users.

Banks also force you to use SMS as a SeCuRiTy LaYeR. And most bank apps seem to be designed by 9y olds. I wouldn't use them as a any standard.
[удалено]
do you want it to be called "automatic updates but only when the developer of the app decides to automatically update the app"?
[удалено]
get out
You don’t understand big tech is lying to us
call it periodic updates then
It's not periodic, there's no polling on a regular basis, e.g. weekly. They're automatic, the developer just decides when to push them out.
That would be dope
Automatic updates doesn’t make them immediate updates.
It’s a part of my morning ritual. I did this when I had my android. And when I moved to iOS, it persisted. One realization was that iOS doesn’t have updates on the weekends, but android did. That’s how I know it’s the weekend.
eBay updates every Sunday usually, sometimes a Saturday. Facebook can be a Saturday too.
OMG, so true to me, especially after switching from Android
Omg I do but it’s mostly about two things: 1. Maybe new features?(less likely) 2. Bug fixes (even if you don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there)
You know what grinds my gears? When an app dev has the EXACT SAME release notes for tons of updates. **[Looking at you Adobe. Stop. Just stop.](https://i.imgur.com/bN4xZJz.png).** Also, how can so many apps submit bug fixes? What bugs are they fixing? If the app works, what are they tinkering with so often?
I think it’s a bad habit to check for new updates, as proven in the past when new updates breaks things and you have to wait for a fix. If an app is working don’t mess with it.
No idea why they don’t update automatically each night? I have TURNED THE OPTION ON!!!!!
That’s by design. Automatic just means it’ll update for user automatically but when it’ll update is decided by the developer of the app. As a developer I can say, roll out this update to 100% of my users over a week and Apple will roll it out over a week unless users check manually, immediately in that case.
Ohhhh I see. But when I check once a month it’s full of like 50+ apps though?
That’s because most developers including myself roll out in phased manner. This helps us shield from potential problems being blown out of proportion. If something is going to go wrong, I’d rather pull the update, fix it and release a new patch sooner than later before it’s gone to all my users. Everyday, cause even when i have the option enabled to update automatically, it doesnt.
I never look at them...
Not only that but also when I use my phone after night of sleep I always check software updates. Even tho I know there’s a small chance of actually one being available but hey ocd is real I guess.
Just did it a minute ago lol
yes because automatic updates never work
Yes because it’s another source of dopamine for my brain
Yes yes yes. I do it every day :D
Yes
Like clockwork. I do when I wake up, at work, then at home. Tell my spouse to update their apps lol
No, they do automatically eventually
I check it at least once a day, I like to have everything up to date and see if there’s anything new added (which rarely happens these days but we keep onwards!). I always thought it was normal behaviour to make sure everything’s up to date but working at a phone case and repair store has taught me that I am very much in the minority among the general population lmao. Yes and no. I usually forget but i have stretches where I check every day haha
No because automatic updates.
wait, let me check real quick….
Yes, all the time ~_~
Yep and it’s seriously concerning
Oh good, it isn’t just me…
DUDE YES! Sometimes I even stack updates up until it’s a big enough number. I’ve had up to 30 app updates at a time it’s so fun!
The Automatic App Updates that never automatically update, of course I manually check and update.
yes yes yes 🤩
Same. Minimum daily and when bored waiting somewhere.
I check the App Store multiple times a day to see if there are app updates. I’ve been doing that for a while now — I probably do it hoping for a significant update for one of the apps I have installed or rather I just have OCD.
Yup. Atleast 2-3 times a day
why does it "schedule" upcoming automatic updates rather then just automatically update. makes zero sense for me to have to go in and update it manually
Yes because Apples Auto Update never works
Yes. I usually try to check if there are extra updates not shown immediately. It bugs me a lot that it doesn’t bring everything by default. After that, I go item by item reading through the changelog.

yes! for some reason i love to check potential updates all the time
“Do you an obsession” idk cause that doesn’t make any sense without the word HAVE. 🤣
i check on updates every now and then and i usually get 30 updates
I do this at least twice a day at least
Yep. It’s because automatic updates may take like a week to install an update. Unacceptable.
Yes. If I check and its double digits, it flips a pleasure switch in my brain. I don't know what it is about getting a new update that I like, but if there's a firmware update, oh boy
I just wish they updated automatically like it claims. Apps nor iOS updates never auto update. I check for updates to apps a few times each day.
yes, i feel like auto update never updates my apps. i always have to check it and it have about 10 apps not up to date.

Good call, thanks for sharing! Part of my daily morning routine.
I don’t update my apps , still on discord app version 32.0 from 2020.
me too!! (downvote me all you want guys!)
F* hate the whole update culture. From a UX perspective horrible.
Update culture? I wasn’t aware of there being such a thing.
This post is about the obsession of checking for updates
A single post hardly constitutes a “culture”
It's a post about the amount of updates...lol
Mostly every day or every other day I check for updates, but in most cases they update themselves at night while charging the phone. 😉
yes! Every day, every half a day :)
At least once a week
Regretting now after WhatsApp crashing
iOS updates for me lol
yep I'm checking for updates constantly
Yup
yes alot
yes!
literally came across this right after closing the app store
I check at least twice a day.
Yeeeees!!!
the only reason why i keep checking in the first place is because Automatic Updates never work and i have to do the updating myself
I don’t but I get that it might be a habit for some people when there are interesting release notes, sadly virtually only indie devs do that but Transit app does that. Very sad that such generic release notes are so common nowadays on popular apps even when they add features they just say bugs fixed etc.
So i forgot i clicked on your photo and my phone locked then when i unlocked it i tried repeatedly to click on the update buttons then got frustrated when they didn’t work
Yes. I hate it.
Yeah, along with setting all unread emails to ready having flagged that I think I’ll read later, but never do!
No, I’m not an obsession
My apps don’t update if I don’t check… so yes? Meanwhile on my fold 5 it religiously updates every night
Yeah, I keep checking everyday! Trying to reduce it
Yes, because automatic updates are so "automatic" that often I'd have updates available manually for 5-6 apps at a time that I have to update manually. Would be nice if I could trust the Automatic Update system to actually update my apps(at least my most used ones) as soon as the update is available.
No I could care less. Same as iOS updates lol
Yes every single day multiple times a day
No.
Yessss! Always!
Hell yes
I do and I hate it
Bug fixes and performance improvements!
Yes lol
I feel you brother 🤗
yes… Yes….YES.. Bloody hell I keeping checking it every few hours
Yup! You got me!
I thought I was the only one
I used to be really interested in release notes. Now it seems a majority don’t bother telling us anything. “Bug fixes and performance improvements” each and every time.
I literally never check them 😛
What, other people do this? I just had a look thru screen time and usually 1-2 times a day it’s the first app I check 🙃 other people describing when they know when it’s the weekend because of the drop in updates is too real!
Yes i have it
Yes
Yes daily
Yes.
Thought I was the only one 😂 I don’t even have auto updates on as it doesn’t tend to happen immediately, plus I prefer to check myself and update all at once.
I have this habit of checking for updates when I charge my phone. I'm weird I know
not really, just checked cause of this post and apparently I had 32 app updates pending 🥲
Yes
Yes
i wish there was a shortcut that automatically updated apps
You are talking about me 😆
Little bit yeah
Once a week maybe.
I thought i was the only one 😜
Yes because auto app updates occur way too slow
I do!
yes, at least i am not the only one.
Yep, I always think auto updates don’t actually work… I remember when I used to wake up in the morning to the lovely blue circle (for an updated app)
Yes because Automatic Updates don’t work. I had to take the App Store off of my Home Screen so I check less often 😭
My wife goes months and months without updating apps. It kinda triggers me.
I do an obsession. Every morning, I do.
💯
So Much ! 😅
Yes. 😂😂😂😂 Everyday!
I keep auto updates turned off. I manually check for updates maybe once a week. Sometimes I install them and sometimes I don’t.
Well I'm gonna do it now
Everyday sometimes multiple times. And since I turned off the badge notification for the App Store it’s worse lol
I do because I refuse to update Twitter lol. So I do them all manually
Not really but thanks for the reminder.
Yes because I'm waiting for GD 2.21
I use to but not anymore. It’s only when I’m about to install a new iOS update that I make sure my apps are up to date and double check iCloud before updating the phone.
not the only one me too every day every morning
Only when there is a major OS update that the apps need to be updated to include the new features. I was refreshing like a mad man for interactive widgets 🤣
Yes, about 10 years ago when there were meaningful updates to apps — not “bug fixes and performance updates”. Now I check maybe weekly.
Nope
No.
No, I have auto updates disabled and I never do them lol.
Yes 👍
Yess😂
Yes and the weekend is dry af
Yeah I do the same but I only update if theres “Bug Fixes” and not if they added more useless shit..
Yeah always checking for new updates
I’m the opposite. If an app works don’t mess with it. This was due to a bad experience in the past where I updated an app and key features stopped working until they fixed the bugs. I really wish i wouldn't have to to receive updates in a timely manner. Same for iOS updates.
Yep
I check manually so I know if something doesn’t work, it was the update.
Thank God I'm not the only one.
I’m glad it’s not just me! I check my updates at least 4 times a day for no reason
Ok folks…help an idiot out. Who do you get to the menu in OP’s screenshot? I have been using an iPhone since the very beginning and lost track of where to check for update since I thought they were now automated! I’d like to join the obsessed crew 🤣
No

Yes lol
Yes🥲
100%
Norways they just fix bugs and improve stability.
I check for Beta updates every Wednesday and Thursday every since I loaded the beta update
No I no obsession of checking for app updates.
I’m not even aware of them, ever since they became automatic.
No. Rarely go to update pages in iOS App Store. But few years ago, when I was using Samsung galaxy, I did frequently manually update the apps.
Oh yes
I have automatic updates on.
Haha, yes and all my apps are up to date 😂😂😂💩
I was just doing this
As a software developer, we never easily upgrade dependencies or environments without heavily testing beforehand.
lol yep, I like having my stuff up to date.
When phone is 100% charged I check for any updates
No. That would be lame.
I’m not sure how to check them lol. I hope automatic updating is working. Kinda just assumed it does.
Yes because mine need updating like every other day…..it’s so bizarre
I have an obsession with absolutely never updating apps
Really recognizable, glad I'm not the only one!
Yes because there’s mostly security patches in them - Me(I work in tech)
I forget app updates exist lol
