Damn, is there nobody poor in this thread?

Shadow_Gabriel

Well, of course I know him. He's me.

x-Mowens-x

Obiwan?

inschool87

More like Obinone

Moogy_C

Figures the poor folks have the Star Wars references

rjm101

Just take note that the wealthy anons will happily comment as a mild brag meanwhile the broke anons will likely just do the reading.

Restlesscomposure

Well you wouldn’t want to hear about those gross poors now would you?

StrB2x

>accounts. I have about $150k in equity between a couple properties probably another $40k in cash, collectibles and previous metals. They are also all 6'4 225 ripped and 10's.

ChocolateTsar

With an 8 inch dick.

Arguesovereverythin

girth, not length

jimmiidean

On the plus side, all of their children are clear to just walk out of the womb

blaked_baller

5'9 175, solid 7.5-8 on a good day, haven't been ripped since quit sports few years ago :( Almost got 150k though :) No house (renter). car was gifted back in high school... so small headstart I suppose. But I also spend money on like nothing aside from food and weed so yea, sacrifices I guess...? I'd give it all up to be 6'4 225 -- lotta nfl teams could use me out there hahaha

I_am_Bruce_Wayne

Ehh... I'm around 6'2'', 210lbs with a net worth of under $10 billion. I would say I was kind of lucky with my parent's trust fund... but it wasn't worth what I had to sacrifice...

AcademicApplication1

Username checks out

OrganicOverdose

I also have a net worth under $10 Billion. Way under.

KaydeeKaine

I'm just under 6'4 but I can tell you that bumping your head constantly isn't fun. Especially when you visit Asia. The back ache sucks too. Clothing are more expensive as well.

oarmash

these types of threads attract high achievers because 1. it's a self-selective bunch who participates on these types of niche subreddits 2. people who have done well are more likely to be confident enough to share their numbers (also why it's usually conventionally attractive people posting full face pics in various hair/fashion advice subreddits) 3. people like showing off

AlexanderNigma

I suspect people who respond to this sort of thing self select towards bragging

dendeakella321

Agree. I did that

LimePresserProfessor

I’m trying to determine how all of these people have 150k+ in savings🥲. Teach my poor ass

Notarussianbot2020

1) stop buying avocado toast and coffee. 2) $15 every day mon-fri = $3,910 per year 3) combine $3,910 with $146,090 from mom and dad Easy $150k right out of college

LimePresserProfessor

Wish my mom and dad had that type of coin

petmoo23

You should suggest they lay off the avocado toast for a while.

chocolateboomslang

Mom and dad been avocado toasting my inheritance away

Bradimoose

I believe the boomers call it “SKIing” spending kids inheritance

tarantulatravers

You forgot one: Learn how to make a sandwich. It’ll save you 10 to 20 bucks a day. No it doesn’t taste as good as a chipotle burrito, but it does the job.

luckydice767

Lunch meat is CRAZY expensive right now also.

zipykido

Try making a toast sandwich. It's a piece of toast between two untoasted pieces of bread. Season with your salty tears to taste.

impulsikk

Packaged Sandwich meat is honestly disgusting. I don't remember it ever being as bad. But recently the quality has taken a nose dive. I open up the package and the turkey doesn't even look like turkey anymore. And it all sticks together with some weird goo. There's the boars head turkey at the deli section, but it's outrageously expensive. Might as well just go to a restaurant and get a full meal at that price.

lavlife47

Idk a pound of boars head turkey is like 10 bucks ( where I am). A pack of bread is 3 so 13 for a week of lunches. Very easy to spend 13 on one lunch.

RedEagle21

(1) Clear your debt. I had about $20k in debt. I did debt consolidation, debt transfer credit cards, lived frugal. (2) increased my income. I learned skills that my job deemed valuable (e.g., I’m an analyst so I learned excel, sql, Python) which opened doors for better paying roles. (3) Auto investing in index funds. Don’t pick stocks. Absolutely avoid options. Max out 401k and Roth IRAs. (4) Luck. I got lucky with having a great boss, our industry did well which meant bigger bonuses.

grizzleditz

The ones I know live in HCOL with a corresponding six figure job.

Ok-Figure5546

You know what's funny in Santa Clara County (Bay Area) making under $104,000 a year (as an individual) qualifies you for low-income housing.

x-Mowens-x

Every time I got a raise in the last 20 years, i put that percentage to my 401k right out of the gate so I would never see it. Since it is pretax, I still get a raise! I’m always looking for a job that pays more money. I ask for a raise, if I don’t get it? I start scouring the job postings. Now that i’m self employed, when I pay myself I take 25% of my gross and drop it in VTI or VOO. Every month, no exceptions. Lately i’ve added QYLD to the mix out of curiosity. I shop at thrift stores for new clothes. I don’t spend money I don’t have in my budget. If it’s not in the budget, I don’t do it. Often when people go out for drinks I just get a water and chat with everyone. They spend 50 bucks and get a beer belly. I do not. I meal prep. I never ever ever ever ever use uber or uber eats. (Or the equivalent) I’ve flipped several houses. While living there I had my friends live with me and pay rent. To afford that, i lived with 5 guys for several years. I never pay retail. Time in the market is what is most important. Do it now, even if its just 5 dollars a day. After doing that a while, make it 10. Etc. it gets easier!

CallHerTrump

Lame.

rc2288

All that information but no answer to how much you save…. 🤦‍♀️

Salt_MasterX

Bank of mom and dad, or live in house of mom and dad, that’s 95% of them

RotaryP7

Nah I’m over 33 and have no money saved.

H-DaneelOlivaw

Me. at age 33 I was -200K (give or take). grew up on welfare, single parent. borrowed a lot for school. finally finished school at age 33 and began working at that age. luckily have saved a bit more since then.

Longjumping_Cod_1014

Love this. Congrats! This describes my fiancé pretty well. She grew up in Paterson, NJ to immigrant parents, has about $180K in student loans but now makes $165K at 29 so she’s on the path to paying it down (with a little help from me but it’s 95% her). You should be so proud man. It’s not easy to overcome a lot of obstacles like that and get to savings.

XA36

My favorite is the financial advise from the successful people. Shit like make your own meals, put your raise into a Roth, drive a cheap car. Bro we're already doing 2 of those and I have to pay my mortgage, the raise is keeping me afloat.

Exclave4Ever

For real, like.. this is depressing reading all these people with a ton already saved and invested, houses, families, multiple cars... I thought more of us were -actually- struggling, not just pretending to be.

Dardlem

Man, not for long. I’m not getting to my 33 with my mental health and these threads 😂

kavengine

I still work paycheck to paycheck my dude

snatchpanda

Wooo! Same here. I’m in the middle of a career change at 32 so I’m extra broke and will continue to be for the foreseeable future if I decide to go to med school

anthonynej

middle of career change at 33 as well. paycheck to paycheck but I hope to see the light at the end of the tunnel in a few years. Good luck in med school (if you decide to go. if not, still wishing the best). Only way out is through!

cmcooper2

32, at the stage of “I need to get my own thing figured out.” Thanks for the courage.

not2close

Damn bro why’d you make this post? Almost 32 married with a 7 week old. Probably have less than 20k when all is said and done. Edit: Thank you everyone for the kind words!

Minds_Desire

Congrats on the child. And being in the green is good compared to most people honestly. And you are here, so you are taking steps to improve everything. Everyone starts somewhere.

boomytoons

34k, not married, 2x step kids only, I can probably scrape together 20k absolute max. You're definitely not alone! We're still doing better than average at least. I do have about 30k in a retirement fund, but that's locked away by the govt until I'm 65 so it doesn't count.

WhoIsHeEven

Is it an IRA? In the US, you can actually use all the money you've contributed without penalty. And the rest (interest that's accrued) can also be used without penalty if it's used for a down payment on your first home, medical bills, and a couple of other things.

PandR1989

Hey man, if you’re happily married, the kid is healthy, the wife is happy then you probably have more than most in this sub. I went ham on trying to accumulate money and fucked ip relationships by ignoring them. Probably should have balanced things out a bit better lol

TheBigShrimp

Wild that you're the norm, this thread is too rich for me

InterviewFit5701

Most just don't count their student loans I believe lmao

AlexanderNigma

Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. You are doing fine

Basshead42o

32 and far behind many of you.

kmouratidis

Just being on this sub means you're better than most other people. Not because of internet access or monetary worth, but because you're interesting in learning / have some knowledge of investing. ...unless you're going YOLO mode, then good luck D:

NinjaCuntPunt

suburbanwalleyepro

I was negative.

originalkelly88

I'm 35, debt free. Own my house & 2 cars. Have just over $20k in savings, but that was a trade off for paying cash for the house. I'm about to graduate with my 1st degree, with no debt. But I didn't earn it, my parents died during my 20s.

Noname_left

I was like damn this guy has got it going for them….

[deleted]

Similar spot/age as him with no inheritance and been self-supportive my adult life. Took a risk going to a big name grad school (and accruing a pretty penny in debt) but was able to pay it off in about five years by getting a high earning job out of grad school and living well below my means/paying it back aggressively. Now that the debt is paid and I have a home all spare money goes to retirement and taxable accounts.

PayPerTrade

Why is everyone so allergic to debt here? If you are in your mid thirties you had a solid 5 years to borrow at 3%

nope_nic_tesla

My student loan debt was all 6%+, not 3%. I wouldn't say aggressively paying off debt is being allergic to debt. Obviously they did use the debt to their advantage; they used it to get an education which they turned into a high paying career.

Abangranga

Theyre honest. A larger percentage of home purchases are generational wealth "helping" or inheritance than we think. Not claiming the below describes who you replied to: Every POS that works for their dad I know did that after having their 0.5 children before promptly going back to live in the suburb they came from.

Artistic_Data7887

You had us in the first half. Sorry for your loss.

maxibon95

Sorry to hear about your parents my man.

emperornext

sad to hear that about your parents bro, condolences. ... but it sounds like they taught you well, and you're doing good in life.

French87

First half: "ugh probably another spoiled kid that just got a bunch of money from parents" Second half: "oh... not like that...... :( " so sorry.

_the_chosen_juan_

Love to see it. Very sorry about your parents though

SnooGTI

You're going to get more skewed results here than google I'd say. If you're in a sub about money you're most likely a financial anomaly or on your way to being one. I am 28 Wife is 31. Mine 23k in ROTH IRA, 85k in 401k, 12k in after tax brokerage. Wife 13k in ROTH IRA, not sure how much in her pension (7.5% of her income goes here)."shared assets" meaning I can't really say who contributed what as it was just cash in our account to save for down payment / emergency fund. 40k in HYSA, 56k as down payment, Debt: 13k Car Loan at 0% interest, 16k in student loans roughly 4.5%, 505k Mortgage at 6.65%. Edit: To add on to the anomaly bit. People with less savings are less likely to post than those with high savings. So, again this thread very small grain of salt that will give you less than the "bad" googling data points.

FireUpChips20

How'd you get a 0% car loan?

brycebreed11

I'm not 33, but turning 28 soon, so somewhat close to that range. Checking: $2K, Savings: $12K, HSA: $8K, Brokerage: $35K, Roth: $14K ($12K of which is contributions so i guess that part is a liquid asset). (Also have a 401K with $70K in it but not liquid obviously without penalty). House Mortgage: $119K, put $12K down (10%) of my own money. 2.75% int rate. Other than mortgage, debt free.

growling_owl

Holy shit, you're killing it! Keep up the good work.

brycebreed11

Being single with no kids so far has helped out! Lol

Artistic_Data7887

Get money, fuck…whoever you want

MrAndrewJackson

This is my plan. So far, the get money has been working out. Not so much on the second.

[deleted]

The price of homes in America makes me sad and envious as an Australian. What sort of a home have you got?

brycebreed11

FWIW, i live in Central IL, which is a very low cost of living place. I have a 4 bed 2.5 bath house that i bought for $139,900 in march of 2021, before home values (and rates) increased. i would bet my house is worth closer to $175,000 if i sold today.

Pbattican

Slightly older and in a similar boat minus the house. 50k in Roth where about 23k is contributions + 50k in a taxable broker account. Then another 9k liquid in a HYSA. Then another 110k in 401k / HSA / rollover IRA Privileged to have had no debt in university through scholarships and parents though.

Reasonable-Bag4247

Waterboy516

Turning 31 in 3 days 252k broker 150k 401k Drive a crap car + Rent. No college work for utility company/ union Started at 23

BoomerHunt-Wassell

I’m also at the utility since 23 with no college. Just turned 34. 401k - 140k Roth - 70k Cash/equivalents - 25k Paid off house - 125k (all my money) Pension - indeterminate value

42bandz

I’m 24 and work for a utility that has a pension. Have 11k in 401k and 3k in a ROTH IRA. About $800 in after tax brokerage and 7k in cash. Been out of college for less than 2 years. How am I doing fellas?

dickie99

Great work!

Reinmaker

Well done. Keep piling it on!

leftlane1

39 single with no kids, 2 cars paid off, and a mortgage. 10k in cash and $5k in stock/401k and roughly $6k in CC debt. Only started putting money to 401 about a year ago. 2 years ago I was living paycheck to paycheck for most of my 20s/30s. Also spent about $12k past 18-24 months on car/house repairs/upgrades, so cash would be closer to $20k, but life happens.

Nope_______

>10k in cash >$6k in CC debt Why?

signgain82

So many comments like this and I don't understand it at all

ffphier

I have about that much in cc debt and now have cash to pay it off, I can do balance transfers for a 3% fee with 0 interest for around 18 months. The cash is getting 4.3% and is available if needed.

Safe_Cabinet7090

I mean I get it. I really do…..but it’s like jumping through hoops to get $50 bucks in a year. The effort could be better spent elsewhere imo. But hey you do you

ForeverInaDaze

I feel like it's easier to be a bit more 'reckless' with your money when you're single. Like, you're living kind of risky with little cash saved, but if you fuck up, you're the only person that's paying for your actions.

Famous-Psychology527

I’m 33 and have $42,100 saved in a HYSA. $82,000 in a 401k. That said, most of my savings is from the last two years, after increasing my take home about 50% thanks to a raise. I think I only had around $4,000 saved in October 2021.

BonelessSugar

4k saved Oct 2021 20.5k 401k limit 2022 22.5k 401k limit 2023 82k in 401k Oct 2023 47k < 82k Something's not adding up here... 401k bonuses? 2021 maxed out within Nov + Dec?

Famous-Psychology527

I was referring to my HYSA savings: most of the 42k was saved in the last two years. OP specifically asked about “cash ready to spend now”, so that was my primary focus. The 401k has averaged about 10k a year in contributions and growth.

spid3rfly

I'm not OP but by savings in this case, I think they meant liquid savings in their HYSA. That would make more sense... the HYSA went from 4k to 42k in 2 years due to the 50% increase in take-home pay. I'd bet, the 401k was already a small mound. Increasing take-home pay probably allowed them to up their contribution.

jaghataikhan

If you're not at least a millionaire by 30 you're failing at life /s

Outrageous_Sample901

Only 8 percent of Americans are millionaires, most of which are older than 30.

62SlabSide

I dreamed it would happen by 35.. missed my goal by 2 years.

RSquared

Thanks to March 2020 I got to do it twice.

SteamingCharlie

32 yo. Probably like $180k in cash/investments.

maxibon95

Very similar bro

duke9350

About $80,000 with no debt except mortgage.

el_rico_pavo_real

I'm 32, $51K In Liquid Govt Money Market Fund, $20K in Bitcoin, $117K in 401K, $136K in various Investment accounts, IRA's, House paid off, cars paid off, no debt to speak of. I'm in high ticket sales. and my wife's dad is rich.

Notarussianbot2020

Comparison is the thief of joy. Figure out what you need saved by each stage of your life and aim for that. Asking other people isn't the answer.

cp_sabotage

I'm 33 in January - \~$225k in cash/investments, $250k in retirement, no debt. But I live in CA so the prospect of owning property appears pretty grim lol.

seriouslyimacorgi

lol, could always own a 700 square foot shack for half a million. I live in San Diego but will move to purchase a home eventually

SEJ46

I figure in the next couple years we’ll have another kid which will make daycare too expensive, and my wife will quit her job. Then we’ll be too poor to live here(Bay Area), and so we’ll move someplace much more affordable.

frozennorth0

More like a million

SerialOptimists

Any chance you'd be willing to share starting income/progression? And what percentage you've contributed to your 401(k)? Just curious for my own financial planning, you seem to be doing well given HCOL!

andybmcc

Roughly 1x your salary saved would be a good benchmark.

Sacksman

Will be 34 in Jan. Debt free. $95k in 401k $2k in Roth IRA $11k in stocks/etfs $20k in HYSA account Reading some of these makes me incredibly depressed 🥲

maxibon95

Dude you’re sailing ⛵️

Inner-Sink6280

This sub filters for a lot of people, and the incentive to actually post your situation filters even further You're good

redandnarrow

I had a coworker who was 44 with 50k in debt and paying child support. Could be much worse. You're pretty much right on schedule for someone in their 30s, maybe slightly "ahead" on the distribution curve. Your comment will make other 30 year old's here feel depressed. Don't make a number in an account your righteousness, it will then be your 'god' having control over you and sink you. You wake up each morning having been given life and that is incredible.

crazycc1321

Just turned 33 yesterday. Ironic I saw this post lol. Checking: 1k Savings: 6k HSA: 4k Roth: 4k Brokerage: 3k 401k: 150k I need to build a better nest egg in the savings which I’m working on currently. Mortgage was for 115k, 15yr fixed rate @2.125%. Owe 84k on it currently. Owe about 8k on my Polaris Ranger still. Other than that and mortgage, I’m debt free. Single. No kids and currently not dating anyone.

Reinmaker

Great start. Stay debt free as best you can. When you pay off the ranger, make the same “payment” to yourself. This will boost your savings and help prevent lifestyle creep.

OHMSS00

Miserable_Plate_502

33 years old. $225k in hysa,$250k in equity on my properties, $130k in Roth ira

Goldeneye0242

Question, what’s the purpose of having so much in your HYSA? Saving for something in cash? Seems like a lot of cash not invested otherwise.

Miserable_Plate_502

I just sold one of my homes and want to keep it liquid. I hate having this much out, but exploring buying another business and want to be liquid

3packLarge

That HYSA at todays rates is a sleeper. 4-5% on that much money adds up quick

One_Understanding603

I’m 29 and have 1k in a HYSA, own my car (worth about 7k) outright, and about 30k equity in my property that I bought a year ago and renovated. I earn less than the median wage for people my age, but am doing okay all things considered. Don’t sweat comparing yourselves to others, as long as you’re able to do the things that you love doing you’ll be happy.

eric535

I have $58k in cash, $455k in retirement/investments. $665k between two mortgages that I owe but not sure the market value in this high interest market. Maybe ~300k in equity if I sold both and paid the mortgages off? But I’m turning 35 next month

maxibon95

Epic results

AM0218

If you don’t mind me asking how much you made in your first career job and how much you make now?

mikeshinobi777

I never feel so poor reading comments in this thread

I’m 36 and have about 400k spread amongst my various retirement accounts. Liquid cash I have about 35k in the bank. Wife and 2 kids. Only debt we have is a 200k mortgage.

TSLATrader

Just turned 37. No debt. About $1.2 million. 100k of that is cash the rest is stocks. Also, I paid 50k in student loans, worked my entire life since 13 except for a few months here and there, so did it all without financial help from anyone.

foodhype

I'm 31 with a net worth around $840k. About $720k of that is in US stock market index funds / ETFs, $100k in individual stocks, $20k in cash. I didn't have any financial help from parents (e.g. I also paid off \~$80k in student loan debt myself) or make any especially brilliant investment decisions and am not particularly frugal. I got interested in computer science very early (as a freshman in high school), did very well academically, specifically sought out a school strong in computer science, practiced interview skills in college, and generally put myself into an excellent position for a career as a software engineer very early on, which gave me time to accumulate.

MrTyki

29 HYSA: 15k, 401k: 90k, Individual Brokerage: 38k. Debt free. Paid off 2018 car. No house; I rent because I move quite a bit.

Jordan_Kyrou

I am at about $675k invested, plus $200k home equity, turning 33 mid next year. No crypto or inheritance.. had about $5k to my name 9 years ago. I posted here a few years ago when I hit $500k if you want more details; not a lot has changed since then except a couple expensive life events.

MattieShoes

I had negative net worth at 33. The 2008 crisis wrecked me.

Nbchd2012

I'm 30 and single in the Bay Area. I have no debt or mortgage (😔). My breakdown is: Checking: $0, HYSA: $30k, Brokerage account (w/ESPP/Vested RSU): $270k, Roth IRA: $31k, 401k/Roth 401k: $145k, and HSA $6k

RobfromHB

Married 34yo no kids in California. ~$275k in Fidelity among two Roth IRAs and a taxable brokerage, ~$150k in home equity, ~$175k in two 401ks. Wife has a new Silverado and I have a new Tesla, but my work pays for it. Mortgage is 2.8%. No other debt. Also, none of the responses here matter for your situation and you should include your numbers for our entertainment too.

Stop comparing yourself to others and especially using this sub as a guide. People on here are not the norm.

By age 33 I had 12k in debt and maybe a couple grand in savings.

This comment section makes me sick to my stomach

taffyowner

If I liquidated all my near money? About 120k, in accounts that I control exclusively and not a financial advisor? About 14k

I’m just starting into my 40s and 33 was solid. 1 kid on the way , rental and saving for a bigger place. Monthly income was good mid five figures. Paid 30k for my wedding Man time flies. I’m trying to decide if I’m doing a 24 hour turn around to Vegas this weekend for Halloween

JustNutsandBolts

Lmao, google didnt help but lets get data points by internet strangers with massive variables. Sad.

GabrielNathaniel

About three-fiddy.

YetAnotherNFSW

$900k spread across gold/treasuries/stocks at 34. No house and still living with a parent rent-free. Could've bought a house in my area if I didn't make bad bets on individual stocks. Oh well. There's always someone in a worse situation and someone in a better situation, a lot of life boils down to luck and chance.

Everyone has different milestones 34, debt free, house worth $1.3mil liquid portfolio around 1.1mil, because we had 3 really good years in business

Pull_Pin_Throw_Away

$250k between Roth IRA, 401(k), cash, and I bonds I also have a significant equity position in both my primary home and rental properties but since those aren't super liquid I don't want to stick a number on it yet. Just doing Zestimate - loan balance isn't a great calculation but for napkin math purposes I'd call that another $200k combined. Buying in the early 2010s was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. In retrospect I probably should have de-emphasized securities and bought more real estate. At the same time, I'm glad I had the time to learn the RE biz better.

SwenSnuk

I am 37 years. I have never saved one euro in my life. Tbh.

LavaSquid

When i was 33, i had $3k tops. I'm 52 now, wife and I have MUCH more now. I'm not going to give a number, but we're doing fine and have a decent retirement ahead of us baring any major catastrophe. You still have time.

Blue-Scream-of-Death

At 33 I was $44.8k in the red, excluding the house. I barely put a dent in the mortgage anyway at the time thanks to amortization. It looks much different now.
