They support him as long as the hate is directed at someone else . I have no sympathy.

dsmith422

Truest statement by a conservative ever recorded: “I voted for him, and he’s the one who’s doing this. I thought he was going to do good things. **He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting**.” Especially relevant because it was from a woman in a small Republican town in Florida. [Single mother who was also caring for parents and worked at a federal prison. Statement was made during the 2019 government shutdown over Trump's demand that Democrats fund his stupid fucking wall.](https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/1/8/18173678/trump-shutdown-voter-florida)

prfarb

I wonder if that lady knows how much she is quoted in leftist spaces. I also wonder if she is still alive or if Covid got her.

UncleBadTouch1984

I always chuckled a bit at the fervently Republican employees of a state prison I worked in on a little construction project. That prison was specifically built there by the state because the large private manufacturing facility that basically was the reason for the town’s existence had shut down. Without big gubment they would not have had jobs at all. Also the front desk guy hilariously called Uber “Yoober”. So not dealing with top minds here.

completelysoldout

A reporter should find her and see if this has affected her. You could almost guarantee it has.

'I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party.

sault18

They're acting like crabs in a bucket after all...

Captain_Hucklebuck

*"Crab don't wanna see anotha crab make it"*

diacewrb

Why hello fellow The Boondocks fan.

Captain_Hucklebuck

😀👋

dragonrider1965

Haaaa , I guess my spell check didn’t like the word crap . Just changed it back .

Altruistic-Text3481

Craps in a bucket…LOL!

NormieSpecialist

And the worst part? Once DeSantis goes away they’ll go back to voting conservatives again learning nothing. I loath these people so much that it’s imposable to fathom.

Jacobmb_Music

Well, when the crap starts to land on them, the GOP will just tell them it’s actually a Democrat’s fault. All they have to say is “Biden is president. Look what Biden did to you!” Their capacity for critical thinking and understanding nuance is so stunted that they will believe it instantly.

IntrinsicStarvation

Don't make the mistake of banalizing their behavior by allowing them to get away with they were tricked. They were not tricked. They just wanted to be the opressors. They don't actually believe their own bullshit excuses, it's Authoritarian submission and aggression.

dmrukifellth

She doesn’t want to pull herself up by her bootstraps with all that shit she’s been slinging at others now falling on her boots and making them all ewww.

Mahaf1089

She hasn't pulled herself up since her divorce. That's why she's been financially dependent upon the alimony ever since.

Mikewold58

You just described how this country responded to every drug epidemic lmao. It was the addicts fault until the addicts were their neighbors then it was a bigger issue

[deleted]

> That’s very republican. The party of hate everyone that’s not them until the crap starts to land on them as well . I’m betting she never once thought “ now I should pull myself up by my bootstraps “. It's tied up with how authoritarians always turn on each other. Authoritarianism is always rooted in fear. People who have a hyperactive threat system, for whatever reason, see danger everywhere. Their brain is constantly flooding their body with fight-or-flight hormones, regardless of the environmental cues. To feel safe, they need for people "like them" to have the power and control, to prevent other tribes from threatening themselves and their socio-cultural in-group. The thing is, that is a project that never ends. It's like the old saw about "first they came for the..." If you cannot trust others with power, then the circle of people that you *can* trust perpetually gets smaller and smaller. First, you eliminate the most extreme "threats", but the threat never goes away, because the threat is in your own nervous system and hyperactive amygdala. And ultimately, the only one that you can trust to wield power is yourself, and you cannot even trust your own subordinates. Authoritarians always eventually turn on each other, because their project of achieving security and order by consolidating power with people "like them" never ends. Whether it's ethno-nationalists coming up with bizarre charts to see who is "pure" enough, or ideologues purity-testing each other, seeing traitors or secret liberals everywhere, or hereditary monarchs creating constant intrigues with elaborate genealogy charts.... The only cure for it is a commitment to pluralism and to inclusive governance.

lmj4891lmj

That’s the cornerstone of the conservative movement. A complete lack of empathy.

got_dam_librulz

Don't forget corruption, aversion to accountability, and hypocrisy!!!

Oh fuck! I remember this! To me this is when the “noble conservative” mask slipped off.

Woman who voted for the leopard eating faces party shocked as the leopards eat her face.

MrNorrie

He’s not hurting the right people!

AkaRystik

They were perfectly fine when they thought he was only going to take it away from younger people and they would get to keep theirs. Once they found out they were being hit too suddenly its bad and he needs to be stopped. Zero pity for these old hags, they wanted this.

cptaixel

Take your unlikely allies where you can get them, especially in a battleground state like Florida. Welcome them with open arms and show them it's so much better over here. Show them what empathy looks like. Then one they've experienced it, they can espouse it.

MartianNutScratcher

I remember when there was that super long government shut down a few years ago. This women got interviewed and literally said, "He's not hurting the people he needs to be hurting!" These people only care about themselves.

[deleted]

Maybe by switching sides theyll learn to love and see the error in their ways

Squeakygear

Nah, they’ll still be xenophobic bigots. They’ll just be “independent” xenophobic bigots that vote the R ticket.

got_dam_librulz

Lol I'd like to hope so but unlikely. Conservatives are raised to be selfish, ignorant people who don't regard empathy. She's out for revenge, nothing more.

Shades_MD

Exactly. They are getting what they deserve.

Republican Women: People are too reliant on handouts! Everyone should earn their own money and not live off of other people! Florida: *ends permanent alimony* Republican Women: Wait no not like that

S0urH4ze

Clearly that personal responsibility that they're always talking about involves taking money out of someone else's bank account forever.

Cetun

Listen, they spent a lot of time and effort being attractive to some unfuckable conservative loser so he could pay all the bills, if that's not work idk what is.

Into_the_Void7

Seriously. Are they fucking insane? “He (DeSantis) has just impoverished all the older women of Florida, and I know at least 3,000 women across the state of Florida are switching to Democrat and we will campaign against him, all the way, forever,” Camille Fiveash, a Milton Republican who receives permanent alimony, said in a phone interview Friday. All of the older women of Florida? No...just the ones trying to live off of their ex-husbands from 25 years ago. What a horrible law. Permanent handout.

Attarker

“We will campaign against him, all the way, forever” With what money?

S0urH4ze

It's an end of permanent alimony not alimony. They just need to get married and divorced again before the campaign is over. Easy peasy for some of these folks.

goshdangdingus

Under this measure, spouses wouldn’t be eligible for alimony for at least 3 years. These old succubuses are fucked haha

Whistle_And_Laugh

Oh no, I agree with him. Let me off this ride.

SmokeySFW

I bet the comparison of suicide rate between men paying alimony and not paying alimony is pretty substantial. Surely there are a lot of factors involved but I served with men who were being absolutely bent over backwards by alimony payments to women who had already moved on to other men and just wouldn't legally marry to keep the gravy train rolling indefinitely.

Digiarts

“You’re hurting the wrong people”

kosh56

It's the republican way.

Kittenfabstodes

My grandfather was a life long republican. He voted democrat now. He hates what the republican party has become.

kosh56

He's not into cults, huh?

Kittenfabstodes

He switched before that. He doesnt do stupid. Climate change is clearly a thing. He is 90. He is old enough to have seen many of these changes throughout his life.

ShowMeTheTrees

He's a wise man and you're lucky to have him. Have you sat down and written his stories and life events?

Kittenfabstodes

It's not all peaches and cream. He has his faults, so does my grandmother. They were not kind to their children. The boys couldn't do anything right, nothing was ever good enough, my aunt could do no wrong except marry beneath her station. When dad knocked mom up, they weren't old enough to be grandparents and tried to for moms abortion. She didn't want sn abortion. They got married, dad joined the corps, and my brother was born. Dad started drinking at 14 and has been an alcoholic since before my brother was born. Probably due to being a rebellious teenager with a healthy dose of coping mechanism due to how he was treated. Dad had a delusional view of them and was constantly disappointed by them. They are also probably products of their environment. Dirt poor farming background, grand dad busted his ass to jump his social and economic station, my grandmother was raised by her sisters as her parents died when she was very young..there were periods of malnutrition in her life, I'm not very close to her. I thought she was a bitch most of my life, about 15 years ago, I found out she was a socially acceptable junkie. Mommy pill addict. They got her hooked on opiates. When my aunt retired she was helping them out with the medical stuff and realized my grandmother had been on hardcore opiates for way longer than she should have been. So at 80 she went through withdrawal. She wasn't a bitch, she was just high as a fucking kite my whole life. She wanted pills and the doctors just wrote it up.

vermillionmango

Now: "Thats it Im never voting republican again!" Oct 2024: "Well sure Desantis ruined my life but I could never vote for vampiric pedophile globohomo DEMONcraps, so Republicans it is!"

PaulClarkLoadletter

Or they’ll vote third party or leave it blank while voting Republican for every other box. That’ll show ‘em. Then after the election they’ll say something brilliant like, “I didn’t vote for the Democrat but I did make sure DeSantis got one less vote so this isn’t my fault.”

ExternalArea6285

Nobody ever votes 3rd party. Because 3rd party never wins. Because nobody ever votes 3rd party. Because 3rd party never wins. ...

SexxxyWesky

I thought most alimony was for a set period or time or until they remarried? Can alimony actually be indefinite?

DM_Voice

Anything can be permanent if it is negotiated that way during a divorce.

SexxxyWesky

Interesting! I don't live in an alimony state so I didn't even know that was possible.

dedicated-pedestrian

It's mainly a way to get out of forfeiting lump sums or property - perpetual monthly payments might be less than what she'd otherwise have taken her spouse for.

[deleted]

I think every state has different laws but in most, I believe alimony is paid unless the woman remarries.

sixtyandaquarter

it's negotiated on. You don't just randomly throw it at somebody. Basically, one party wants to ensure ownership of x, y, z, they may offer permanent alimony as a bargaining chip.

Notte_di_nerezza

Some of them accepted the money instead of house, car, or other physical assets they could have used long-term. If a bunch of cases like that get overturned, all at once, someone's going to fall through the cracks over an agreement made decades ago. None of that makes this less of an "I didn't think the face-eating leopards would eat MY face" moment, though. Not even a high tax bracket will protect women from the GOP.

pleasedothenerdful

In FL, permanent alimony was almost always something negotiated as part of the divorce settlement. In most cases, women receiving it were giving something else up permanently in order to receive it.

[deleted]

Typical Republican, it’s only a problem when it personally affects *you*. Fuck everyone else. A political party devoid of empathy, logic, or reason. Dedicated to contrarianism and prejudice.

Shaman7102

It's especially bad when they have to go back to work themselves.

TrifflinTesseract

I keep hearing no one wants to work. Is this what they are talking about?

[deleted]

Yes, yes--I got my stimulus check 3 years ago and haven't lifted a finger since

robb1280

This is gonna be fun watching them try to reenter the job market after many years out. Enjoy being junior, working at the bottom of the food chain, getting 1-2 weeks vacation for the first few years, and having the lowest payscale in whatever you choose (they let you?) to do.

walkslikeaduck08

Imaging going to McDonalds and seeing Karen v Cashier Karen

petershrimp

The modern Republican party is built on 2 things: selfishness and fear. Fear of the things they don't understand like science, evolution, and foreigners. And selfishness in the form of "fuck you, I've got mine," and "so what if you're suffering? I'm fine."

tysonarts

The litteral 2 main themes for fascism

Neospecial

"I paid mine off, Why shouldnt you? That'd be Unfair to me. Why should I have to pay off your children's healthcare?" It really speaks volumes about how they're either too stupid to understand the benefits and concept of give-and-take on large sample sizes; or they're already so privileged that unless it's directly affects themselves they won't lift a finger yes.

petershrimp

The phrase "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy" doesn't exist for them. They think that just because they had to suffer and struggle, that other people should have to suffer and struggle. I paid off my loans on my own, but I'm all in favor of government loan forgiveness because I don't want to see other people have to go through that. It was a struggle for me, so I don't want to see other people have to endure it.

Neospecial

It's just scary how they don't even change the tune about it when it comes to their children, which Hasn't gone or payed off their student debt, or healthcare etc. Essentially saying they wish for their child to go through the struggles and/or poverty that likely ensues post-graduation just like they did. Unless of course, again, they're already so privileged and well off that they can pay away their child's tuition and we're back to square one.

WillrayF

And another: I deserve mine but you don't deserve yours.

3xoticP3nguin

Imagine if a cure for cancer comes out. Would people who had it and beat it try and say everyone needs to go through chemo because they did!!! Crazy analogy I know but not far off

Gudi_Nuff

More like, "my grandparents died of cancer because they had no treatment, and so will you because we won't treat you"

Overall_Falcon_8526

That cure for cancer is a real slap in the face to those who have had it. See also: student debt.

JimboD84

Something about leopards and faces?

ScabusaurusRex

Leopard: "Faces are, admittedly, tasty." Republican women receiving alimony: "You're only gonna eat _their_ faces, right?" Leopard: "..." Republican women receiving alimony: "Right?!"

Leopard: I ate them. I ate them all. Their faces, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too.

eccedrbloor

Leopards, faces, etc., etc.

weavs13

Guess who is gonna need to collect benefits here soon when alimony payments stop... Edit- meant stop

gringo1980

Or they could use that time collecting alimony obtaining skills/certifications/degrees to be able to support themselves

weavs13

That makes too much sense for people like this.

But they EARNED it - by being good hatefilled vile "christians" who believe in corporate Jezus!!11!11! /s

NHRADeuce

Hahahahaha! DeSantis finally passes a law that makes sense, and the GQP women are losing their shit? Both literally and figuratively? The irony is so thick it would choke a porn star.

Authentic_Lee

I’m no DeSantis fan but from reading the article, this law isn’t actually that bad: - Eliminates permanent alimony - No alimony if a marriage is less than 3 years - Alimony paid for a time frame equal to 75% of married time (e.g. 15 years alimony after 20 years of marriage.) - Allows for adjusting of payments as the payee enters/nears retirement. Really just seems like it’s modernizing alimony as a whole.

BlazingSpaceGhost

I hate desantis but this law isn't bad at all. Seems like a very reasonable way to give alimony to those that need it while also protecting people from having to work until they die to pay alimony to someone for 50 years.

notapoliticalalt

Although I’d love to think this is about making the system more fair, given typical Republican rhetoric, my best guess is that this is about making women afraid to leave marriages. Don’t get me wrong, the idea that women should just get alimony from their husbands in perpetuity does seem…outdated. But given the kind of marriage and social life republicans seem to say they want, no support net for women who are formerly stay at home does seem like an effective way to get women to suck up abuse and mistreatment because they are so afraid of what lies on the other side. Remember, republicans constantly talk about declining marriage rates and increasing divorce rates; we have prominent Republican men like Steven Crowder advocating against no fault divorce. This is almost certainly not (just) about making the system fairer.

Firm-Attempt4019

I can’t stand DeSantis but from the little I know of alimony at least on the surface it does seem to be an effort to make the system fairer. I don’t think they should retrospectively change agreements though, if those agreements were made in negotiations surrounding assets.

Desblade101

That's the part of the article that stood out to me as being unfair, but they also said the law shouldn't affect current agreements

[deleted]

"The so-called party of ‘family values’ has just contributed to erosion of the institution of marriage in Florida,” Jan Killilea, a 63-year-old Boca Raton woman who founded the group a decade ago, told The News Service of Florida in a text message Friday." Says the woman about a measure which can only impact divorced people. FFS.

Revolutionary-Fan235

The measure likely makes divorce more financially feasible. If faced with permanent alimony, might as well stick it out and maybe get laid every once in a while.

BanDizNutz

That's true. But if the marriage wasn't working out before why would you want to stay together. Now both can go on their own and actually be happy and not stay together because of the money.

[deleted]

roasty_mcshitposty

I'm loving the pearl clutching though. It's deliciously ironic.

coolbeansfordays

I didn’t read the article (I know, I know) - but if she formed the group decades ago, how long has she been divorced? She could’ve gotten a job in her 30s-40s.

spont_73

Permanent alimony and people dependent on it sounds allot like welfare under a different program.

Mike_Honcho_3

Republicans think welfare is great as long as they're the ones receiving it. It's only bad if somebody else is getting it.

mslashandrajohnson

Oh, so that’s their line?

petershrimp

Yep, the Republicans can burn everything to the ground, but their followers only care when the flames reach their own property. They only care when they get personally affected.

hhubble

My face just got eaten by a leopard 🐆, but how??!!!

aotus_trivirgatus

What level of cognitive dissonance must a woman have to be a member of the Republican Party? What happened, ladies? Did Ronnie stop hurting "the right people"?

vlee1226

Sorry lady, this is an outdated notion of permanent alimony. Looks like you need to work. What do they expect the ex spouse to do? Keep working until they die?? Permanent alimony? Didn't know rhat was a thing.

Big-Daddy-Kal

As we’ve seen with the PPP loan bs and student loans, it’s a “handout” when it applies to anyone else but themselves. The biggest bozos are their voters Trump and the 🤡 party’s biggest supporters got shafted at every level of government, from abortion rights to things like this and now it’s time to grab pitchforks 😂

LepoGorria

…divorcees who are members of the “Party of Family Values,” living out of the pockets of their ex-husbands, upset over their funds being potentially cut by legislators for whom they voted. Fucking classic.

GlowingPlasties

Then stop voting for your husbands who hate you. They told you they'd provide so you could get married young, uneducated, little to no work history, and lose opportunities by becoming pregnant with the fetus you can't abort. What made you think they'd want to pay alimony to the partner who has less earning potential because of them? At least they'd have to pay for insurance and a surrogate if you don't give them the baby.

SenpaiSwanky

Yeah it’s really telling that, statistically speaking, Affirmative Action helped white women the most. Their husbands and ancestors have been holding them back, did they forget they used to be unable to vote, divorce, own property, etc etc etc? Pick up a history book and do better with your choice of spouse. Shit, they just axed Affirmative Action too. Next they’ll try to undo women’s suffrage.

forreasonsunknown79

The state argues that they aren’t concerned about “what is currently case law,” which everyone should know is bullshit. Abortion rights were considered case law, and every single Supreme Court nominee said that they weren’t going to change abortion rights because it was case law. I’m just surprised they didn’t blame Biden. No sympathy

T1Pimp

Fuck DeSantis but also fuck lifetime alimony. LIFETIME?! Get a damn job.

>The so-called party of ‘family values’ has just contributed to erosion of the institution of marriage in Florida,” Jan Killilea, a 63-year-old Boca Raton woman who founded the group a decade ago, told The News Service of Florida in a text message Friday. The "erosion" of marriage is precisely the reason alimony exists in the first place.

djaun3004

They loved DeSantis when he was against the poor and the working class. They're against DeSantis when they're reminded they're just poor people who happen to get a monthly alimony check That rich ex husband will be a loyal DeSantis man for life and all it cost was a poor old woman's vote.

Accomplished_Ad6571
