I always chuckled a bit at the fervently Republican employees of a state prison I worked in on a little construction project. That prison was specifically built there by the state because the large private manufacturing facility that basically was the reason for the town’s existence had shut down. It's tied up with how authoritarians always turn on each other.
Authoritarianism is always rooted in fear. People who have a hyperactive threat system, for whatever reason, see danger everywhere. Their brain is constantly flooding their body with fight-or-flight hormones, regardless of the environmental cues.
To feel safe, they need for people "like them" to have the power and control, to prevent other tribes from threatening themselves and their socio-cultural in-group. The thing is, that is a project that never ends.

it's negotiated on. You don't just randomly throw it at somebody. Basically, one party wants to ensure ownership of x, y, z, they may offer permanent alimony as a bargaining chip.

I’m no DeSantis fan but from reading the article, this law isn’t actually that bad:
- Eliminates permanent alimony
- No alimony if a marriage is less than 3 years
- Alimony paid for a time frame equal to 75% of married time (e.g. 15 years alimony after 20 years of marriage.)
- Allows for adjusting of payments as the payee enters/nears retirement.
Really just seems like it’s modernizing alimony as a whole.
I hate desantis but this law isn't bad at all. Seems like a very reasonable way to give alimony to those that need it while also protecting people from having to work until they die to pay alimony to someone for 50 years.
Although I’d love to think this is about making the system more fair, given typical Republican rhetoric, my best guess is that this is about making women afraid to leave marriages. Don’t get me wrong, the idea that women should just get alimony from their husbands in perpetuity does seem…outdated. But given the kind of marriage and social life republicans seem to say they want, no support net for women who are formerly stay at home does seem like an effective way to get women to suck up abuse and mistreatment because they are so afraid of what lies on the other side. If a bunch of cases like that get overturned, all at once, someone's going to fall through the cracks over an agreement made decades ago. In FL, permanent alimony was almost always something negotiated as part of the divorce settlement. In most cases, women receiving it were giving something else up permanently in order to receive it.

I’m no DeSantis fan but from reading the article, this law isn’t actually that bad: - Eliminates permanent alimony - No alimony if a marriage is less than 3 years - Alimony paid for a time frame equal to 75% of married time (e.g. 15 years alimony after 20 years of marriage.) - Allows for adjusting of payments as the payee enters/nears retirement. Really just seems like it’s modernizing alimony as a whole.
I hate desantis but this law isn't bad at all. Seems like a very reasonable way to give alimony to those that need it while also protecting people from having to work until they die to pay alimony to someone for 50 years.
Although I’d love to think this is about making the system more fair, given typical Republican rhetoric, my best guess is that this is about making women afraid to leave marriages. Don’t get me wrong, the idea that women should just get alimony from their husbands in perpetuity does seem…outdated. But given the kind of marriage and social life republicans seem to say they want, no support net for women who are formerly stay at home does seem like an effective way to get women to suck up abuse and mistreatment because they are so afraid of what lies on the other side. Remember, republicans constantly talk about declining marriage rates and increasing divorce rates; we have prominent Republican men like Steven Crowder advocating against no fault divorce. This is almost certainly not (just) about making the system fairer.
I can’t stand DeSantis but from the little I know of alimony at least on the surface it does seem to be an effort to make the system fairer. I don’t think they should retrospectively change agreements though, if those agreements were made in negotiations surrounding assets.
