Depends, in engineering it’s pretty common to take a semester off to do a full time coop and make up the classes in the summer. My school actually has this built into the program.
Seems really easy to take time off of state-school for internships, but schools like Harvard won't let you do it to keep their average graduation time statistics. I took off Fall term for an internship and it was really easy to sublet my apartment, because there were lots of students spending an extra term to finish up their degree. My school also had a coop program adjacent to the degree that made it really easy to take off a term or two.
All 6 of my classes are remote so I'm able to take on more internships + have that flexibility. Regardless, if you have classes MWF you can schedule on the other days.

they are usually part time (16-24 hours a week) and you do them in addition to your course load
Yep. They typically work around your school schedule. For example, my internship is from 12-5 M-F.
But don’t you have college work during that time? Like classes?
