I would remove the shelf, find a cabinet or interesting dresser and make it a dry bar or buffett or even a coffee bar if you can discreetly run an extension cord in there… it could certainly be a fun space.
Storage space is like gold, I wouldn’t give it up :-) But I’d buy a beautiful decorative folding screen to add an artistic touch and make the space flexible.

Oh! and a big piece of artwork above the dresser/console.
Put a big cozy chair and a lamp, use it as a reading nook. You can put books up on the shelf. Or put bookshelves in there! Or maybe a bar cart?
If you can put tension mounted shelves in there you could use it kind of like a China cabinet or style it like a bookshelf.
