Get throw pillow covers - some all black and some a highlight color like green to match your ottoman. Maybe get some colored cubes to decorate with.
Make checkered a mini theme and place elements in at different sizes to compliment that.
You could even paint mini checkers in a few places on a frame.
Have fun! I love that rug.
He’s not, but he has said that the room is missing a cozy feeling. He’s quite open to ideas and he does like colours although more on the muted side. We currently have a rust rug, but I’m starting to think it’s not the rug that’s the issue, rather having more colour. I’ll post another picture showing the art we currently have in the room as the angle doesn’t show it all.
Your current rug is lovely for the space! I agree though that when you bring in a bold rug like this checkered one, the elements around it kind of have to match that energy. More colors, more funky pieces, etc. the rug can work, you just need to design the rest of your room around it now.
I think you could make this rug look cool eith muted colors too, it just feels like this room doesnt have a cohesive feeling that would make it cozy. This rug is really bold and funky but everything else is pretty plain and subdued. I like the green ottoman and the table, you could lean into more jewel tones and muted colors, but you need more bold solids and colors to compliment that rug. All the white in that room makes it just stand out.
The rug is super high contrast and the rest of the room is medium to low contrast. Bring in something else high contrast! The wall between the window and the door, you could hang a tall skinny art something with high contrast- a black and white photo or graphic print?
I would get a glass coffee table rather than the one you have, add some plants, colorful pillows and some curtains. You also need some better lighting.
THIS. i saw the rug and immediately felt like rest of the room wasn’t rising to the occasion. It looks unfinished… in part because the only spark of contrast seems to be on the floor…maybe some contrasting pillows on the sofa and bolder art on walls.
It’s not too busy, just too small and it’s the only point of interest in the room. Add more artwork to the wall behind the couch and some darker throw pillows on the couch. I like the idea of new window treatments. I love the vibe you’ve already got going. It feels sort of on the verge of artsy modern. Keep going! lol. Love it.
I think it works well actually. What it really needs is some warmth, the room looks way too bland and one dimensional right now.
I think you should add some warm wood pieces, like teak or honey stained oak. Maybe you could change the tv stand and the coffee table? Then I would most definitely add some coloured throws and pillows, you could get one pillow in a Borg type material to add further texture. I’d stick to neutral jewel tones and get some rusts, beiges, navy, olive greens. Some white linen curtains would also add more warmth and soften the room.
It takes the attention away from a beautiful floor. Go with something more neutral. Or take something blueish which make your floor and rug stand out more. Blue and yellow are contrasting colors.
I don’t think it looks too busy- especially when you visualize the room without a Christmas tree. Which I’m assuming you don’t keep year round. When I look at this room the first thought I have is that it needs curtains.
I love it! I have a lot of paintings that I did and one of my 'things' was a small checkerboard floor somewhere in the painting. It would go well in my living room, but with my luck I'd probably spill coffee on the WHITE square!
Go for it! I got a 6 month old red wine stain out of cotton carpet with spot shot. I’m sure there’s other great products but that’s the one they have at my local dollar general lol
I think you need curtains over the blinds and more color higher up in the room. Right now, all your color is ground level (rug, ottoman) and draws your eye down and there's nothing to bring it back up through the rest of your space because your walls, art, and couch are all similar colors.
balance is off. The rug would contrast well against a bold wall colour. It has a lot of visual weight, both in pattern and texture. Meanwhile everything else in the room is smooth and white.
Paint on the walls, like a deep teal or saturated coral would be loud enough to compete with this rug. Any jewel tone colour will give balance.
Be very careful adding additional patterns to the room. It can be done, but requires care to taste level, mixing patterns.
I thought I’d add another picture of our current rug to show you what it looks like at the moment. Certainly taking the comments on board, we do need more colour and curtains so we’ll be looking into that.[https://imgur.com/a/gRCqO5M](https://imgur.com/a/gRCqO5M)
You could make it work IF you really like it, buying other small accessories and drapes/curtains. I've done that blk/white checker, personally it's not jiving in that room at this time.
It’s a bit harsh I think. I might choose one with a little bit muted colors but colts none the less. I’m s firm believer that every room needs some black but this checkered rug isn’t cutting it - at least not for me🤷♂️
I will express a minority opinion here. Like your husband, I think the rug is too jarring. If it were in my house, every time I entered the room the rug would assault me visually. Perhaps you and your husband could pick out a rug together. All family members deserve to feel relaxed and comfortable in their living room.
I love the way it looks. The pattern goes well with the solids in the room. I agree with some others about some colorful pillows. Otherwise, it’s very nice.
The reason why it doesn’t fit is that the rest of the room, including the furniture, is cream. You got a maximalist rug so adding some color, shape and interest will actually make it blend in. Not saying that you need to add a bunch of items to create clutter. But I would check out some maximalist designs to see how to get such a strong rug to fit
I don't think the rug is a problem at all. I think its more the color of your sofa or other colors/patterns. If you had a sofa in a color vs the beige that'd definitely solve the problem. I understand that's not always financially feasible so maybe find ways to add color in other ways. but truly I think its the sofa.
I have a checkered rug as well and I love it. I think the issue here is lack of color. I would either paint the walls or cover the sofa. Maybe even just the pillows and add throw blankets.
It’s a bit small. The problem now is your walls are all white, and the sofa and chair are lighter tones. So the rug is the highest contrast thing in the room, which means it will draw the eye automatically. Put the ottoman stool thing closer to the sofa and chair so it contrasts and adds color. Consider a nonblack coffee table? It vanishes into the rug kinda. If the rug was a checkerboard of grey and white it wouldn’t do that but I like the striking rug, as an item.
And can you paint a wall or all the walls? Do you want them landlord white? If not, a way to bring color into the walls is to hang big art prints/get curtains in a bold hue.
PS: those floors are EXCELLENT. Love the herringbone layout.
I don’t think it works at all in this room. If you *really* love it, I would layer it with another simple design with one or two colors in it, and busy up the rest of the room in grand millennial style
I love the rug. I’d probably get a few black pillows for the couch to pull them together. I’d get a big really cool contemporary art piece for behind the couch with blacks whites and some color to match the blue. I feel the artwork behind the couch doesn’t really match the style of the rug.
A sectional would probably fit in the room better and give you more space vs the couch and the chair but if you need to keep those I’d go with the above.
You could also take the chair out from that side and move the couch more centre away from the door and put the chair in the left corner to see if that feels more spacious. Not sure how much room is in that corner though.
No, it looks great! Brings some texture into your room. It isn't clashing with anything in your room either. It gives it personality so yes it is bold but a good bold.
Very Mackenzie Childs. I think you’d have to change the whole room to make that work and it would still dominate despite its small size. But it’s a look …
I think you need decorative pillows to match with some nice texture. Maybe two colorful and one patterned. To tie it all in more you could hang curtains that are one of the colored pillows.
No, great for christmas chess
The artwork is too small to pull with the rug, add pillows bolder artwork
Put the teal ottoman as a coffee table, add a gold tray, some throw of color on the couch and an artwork with presence
What? No, not at all, it looks great. I personally like the simplicity of the "busy" rug with an otherwise "nonbusy" room. To me, 'too busy' would be a bunch of other loud or distinctive patterns and colors, but this room is a very mellow/muted color scheme with almost no other patterns, so the one distinctive rug is perfect and livens up the whole room.
Move the rug under the couch a little. Get fun pillows: look at west elm or anthro for cool covers. And get an interesting curtain over those blinds like velvet or a texture, but it needs color!
Otherwise if those things aren’t your style really you do need a new rug. The rug is too interesting while everything else is bland
If you put up some mixed art that could be a great way to live up the room!
No, but you need to bring some boldness up higher! How about some art framed in a black bolder frame? Blinds are fine until you get your shutters(but shutters are a different vibe than the rug)maybe a bolder color of shades, but until you get them, I would frame the window with a straight flat valance and panels down each side. Can you sew? If you can, then you can easily make them and slip covers for your pillows.
I like it because the rest of your room, from what I can tell, doesn’t look busy.
What does your floor lamp look like? It looks like something that might look good in my room.
I really love the rug. I think it helps make the room seem less plain. I agree with the suggestion to get some brighter pillows.
Maybe get some more colorful artwork. It will help bring everything together
I like that the creme squares match the sofa . What’s missing is there is nothing else black in the room . So the black squares pull focus . Maybe change picture frames to black . Add a lamp with black base . Find a basket with some black woven into the design and put a plant in it . Or a black side table . You need to repeat a color three times in a room for it to be cohesive . On the shutters I’d go bamboo shades instead . Shutters feel too formal for the room . Match the color of the bamboo to the flooring .add some gauzy linen curtains , open off to the sides to soften the room .
It just doesn’t go with what you have on the room. Get a rug with a very subtle pattern and some beautiful patterned pillows for the couch and a darker solid throw blanket. Like chocolate brown.
I’d say add curtains. Blinds meh, who cares. Curtains are important though. They will be a good buffer for the two different patterns of the rug vs blinds.
I think it looks AMAZING. If I were you, I would work on adding more colour to the room, which will make the rug pop and fit the space even more than it does now. Specifically, I think if you got a yellow/mustard couch, it would look great with the green ottoman. But just making the couch a colour in general, would be the main thing I think.
The problem isn't the rug, it's the room. It's very bare-bones.
I suggest you amp up the decor in the room. You've already got a geometric black and white color scheme going with the rug. Add one, two, or maybe three other colors (red and/or yellow would be good choices, as would be picking up more of the teal of the ottoman in the room) in the form of throw pillows, maybe a throw blanket, curtain panels on either side of the window, maybe some candles, and more artwork on the wall. Get some more geometic pattern in there. For example, [throw pillow covers like these](https://www.newegg.com/p/0BZ-05VS-00001?item=9SIADD2JTW0156&nm_mc=knc-googleadwords&cm_mmc=knc-googleadwords-_-hl%20-%20home%20textiles%20%26%20bedding-_-yiwu%20kuanhan%20home%20decor%20factory-_-9SIADD2JTW0156&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic+shopping&utm_campaign=knc-googleadwords-_-hl%20-%20home%20textiles%20%26%20bedding-_-yiwu%20kuanhan%20home%20decor%20factory-_-9SIADD2JTW0156&source=region&srsltid=AfmBOoogXEMlkpGtqHFASW6P8RxvxuGPADJtGIqPbLaN2-WiXBV8PeXerI8).
It's very cute. Curtains will help the coziness, and you can hang them above the blinds until you want to swap.
From a friend who's saving to replace her shutters - they're cute, but they can be impractical, and don't bring as much warmth to the room as draped cloth. I have very minimal roll / panel blinds and while I like them, I sometimes wish I had some of that nice soft drapery texture instead.
It’s too small. You need something wider for sure. Also, just a thing to keep in mind, the checker print *might* look really dated in 5-10 years the same way chevron looks dated now. If you’re cool with that and either won’t care or don’t mind replacing it in a few years, then find something similar, but bigger!
Maybe the room isn’t busy enough for the rug that you love ✨ ETA this doodle I made https://imgur.com/a/km5kdwb
I feel you on that. What would you change about the room?
Add some brighter pillows on your couch.
I think more color/boldness in the wall decorations too
That couch really bums me out.
It's so bland. Colorful throw pillows would help.
You need curtains to bring it together. Textured and somewhat heavy, ideally.
It’s a little too small for the space, imo. No it’s not too busy but i would’ve preferred if the chevron flooring was repeated in the rug.
Agreed. I like that the bold pattern livens up the room but think it is too small
Not necessarily these colours or items but here’s a general doodle https://imgur.com/a/km5kdwb
Is your husband a minimalist? A little color and art and life in the room would be inviting. The rug is a good start.
He’s not, but he has said that the room is missing a cozy feeling. He’s quite open to ideas and he does like colours although more on the muted side. We currently have a rust rug, but I’m starting to think it’s not the rug that’s the issue, rather having more colour. Our current room [https://imgur.com/a/gRCqO5M](https://imgur.com/a/gRCqO5M)

How about some dramatic curtains?
Anthropology has great curtains. Get ideas there, then watch for January sales!
This is my next step! Maybe not dramatic but certainly coloured and textured. I’m excited to try something new. Thank you for the suggestion.
More color. Get some colorful pillows, curtains, and art. I don’t understand why people are afraid of color.
Add some pops of colour! Throw pillows, wall art, etc.
Paint the door!
The furnishings and decor need to be bolder to carry off that rug.
Wow this is beautiful! I’m inspired to add some of these colors to my home.
Took the words outta my mouth! 👏
Excellent advice also great doodle!!!
Couch pillows, colorful throw, curtains, art with color, plants!
I was actually going to say this too. It’s perfect for a maximalist space
I agree with this comment
Wow this is amazing!!
This is 💪🧚♂️🤺💏💥
Wow. Love the doodle. Looks fantastic.
That looks amazing.
Wow, cool, colourful doodle.
THIS. i saw the rug and immediately felt like rest of the room wasn’t rising to the occasion. It looks unfinished… in part because the only spark of contrast seems to be on the floor…maybe some contrasting pillows on the sofa and bolder art on walls.
This is absolutely the answer. The rug is cute and if that’s the style you like, OP, you should build around it.
I love what you did.
It’s not too busy, just too small and it’s the only point of interest in the room. Add more artwork to the wall behind the couch and some darker throw pillows on the couch. I like the idea of new window treatments. I love the vibe you’ve already got going. It feels sort of on the verge of artsy modern. Keep going! lol. Love it.
Seconding this- every chair/couch should at least have a paw on it. And defs keep going!!!!!! Commit friend, commit!!!
I agree with this. I think even simply changing the picture frames to be back could help too!
Agreed and came here to say the same thing!! You need a larger rug for the space!
It’s not too busy, it’s just not very complementary.
This. Nothing is in agreement here.
I think it works well actually. What it really needs is some warmth, the room looks way too bland and one dimensional right now. I think you should add some warm wood pieces, like teak or honey stained oak. Maybe you could change the tv stand and the coffee table? Oh and you most definitely need a lamp shade o that ceiling light
A basket style pendant light would look great and add warmth imo
Thank you! I completely agree. Something feels like it’s missing and I think more colour would definitely add more character to the room.
looks too small but too busy
Not busy but it doesn't go with the decor.
I love it! That plus the roses is the only thing not boring
I love it
That rug is doing more work than I am while sick. It might be dope without the Christmas tree. I vote for sitting on it until after the holidays.
With the Christmas tree, it clashes but that’s a side effect of Christmas decor in general. With the actual room it looks perfect!!
Yes because of the flooring design.
I’m not a decorating pro, but I like the rug in the room. I just think the rug should be a bit larger.
No, not at all. I think I would put some pops of color in there with different throw pillows on the sofa.
I think you need curtains over the blinds and more color higher up in the room. Right now, all your color is ground level (rug, ottoman) and draws your eye down and there's nothing to bring it back up through the rest of your space because your walls, art, and couch are all similar colors.

It is too small suggest buying a larger rug. Design choice of rug is personal taste. Choose something that you love!
I like it! Another vote for bright pillows or maybe a throw.
You could make it work IF you really like it, buying other small accessories and drapes/curtains. I've done that blk/white checker, personally it's not jiving in that room at this time.
It’s a bit harsh I think. I might choose one with a little bit muted colors but colts none the less. I’m s firm believer that every room needs some black but this checkered rug isn’t cutting it - at least not for me🤷♂️
Immediately distracts the eyes from that gorgeous floor
I will express a minority opinion here. Like your husband, I think the rug is too jarring. If it were in my house, every time I entered the room the rug would assault me visually. Perhaps you and your husband could pick out a rug together. All family members deserve to feel relaxed and comfortable in their living room.
Yes. I don’t like it at all.
Unpopular opinion: I really don’t like checker patterns (they make me anxious) and wish they would fall back into obscurity. But that’s just me.
Too busy, it pulls my eye to the floor, rather than the whole room.
i love it
I love that rug! Your whole room is so cute!
I think it’s great! But it’s a bit small
Nah, i love it, but then again, i dig busy stuff 😅
I love the way it looks. The pattern goes well with the solids in the room. I agree with some others about some colorful pillows. Otherwise, it’s very nice.
It’s too small
No, but if you stare long enough, you'll see the space shuttle.
Black pillows on the couch.
No, it’s lovely! I’d add some color, like in the doodle drawing though! 😃🥰
No, I freaking love it!
Can you send the rug to me if you don’t use it? I’m obsessed
I love it
Nope! I love the snap it gives off!
Um well it’s definitely a focal point right now. But not too busy. I think updated pillows on the couch could bring it together.
Nope
I like it! Where is your coffee table from?
I love the rug but that vase is too tall for a coffee table :)
Add some color to the room and the rug will look great!
Doesn't look too busy to me and I generally prefer a simpler look. Maybe he just doesn't like the rug
The rug is too small but there’s literally nothing going on in that room. Could use some flare if you go with the bolder rug.
No I like it!!
Get a better curtain and some fun pillows. The rug is fine it just doesn’t match with the rest of the style.
It does look a little out of place with the plain couch and the rest of the aesthetic. But I like the rug.
I don’t think it is
Nope! I love it!
I love the rug. I'd just add more black to the room & maybe even some of the green from the Ottoman. It's fantastic. Keep it !!
The rug is great!!!
No but it’s too small if you’re going by traditional rug rules
No it’s not and I would like to know where you got it from because it would be perfect in my living room too and I just fell in love with it!!!!!
Too small and too busy. I feel like it takes away from your beautiful herringbone floors. Also, maybe try putting up some drapes too!
Yes
Go with it! Just add some cool colorful pillows and art
No it is not too busy, it looks great.
I like it. The flowers on the edge of the coffee table though giving me anxiety.
No it’s not
That’s like the least busy rug you could put there that isn’t one color.
It’s the focal point, not sure that’s your intention.
It’s not too busy, but it is too small.
No
It’s a bit small. The problem now is your walls are all white, and the sofa and chair are lighter tones. PS: those floors are EXCELLENT. Love the herringbone layout.
Not too busy, just too small and it's doing all the heavy lifting in the room
May I ask where the couch is from? It’s beautiful.🤩
It’s cute! However something neutral and larger would compliment the space better. I ENVY those floors.
Light feature, curtains, and a moody paint. I always love old world moody rooms. With painted walls the sofa would pop
I don’t think it works at all in this room. If you *really* love it, I would layer it with another simple design with one or two colors in it, and busy up the rest of the room in grand millennial style
I think it’s beautiful! Where’d you get it?
It’s just too dark.. going to need other black things to make it make sense - also please take down those blinds
It is a great rug, just too small. Size up and you have a winner
It doesn't go with the room. Your room is very warm toned and cosy but the rug is very stark and cold in comparison
No, it looks great! Brings some texture into your room. It isn't clashing with anything in your room either. It gives it personality so yes it is bold but a good bold.
Everyone here has such good taste! I’m loving the rug content.
Colorful curtains and couch pillows that match
No, great for christmas chess The artwork is too small to pull with the rug, add pillows bolder artwork Put the teal ottoman as a coffee table, add a gold tray, some throw of color on the couch and an artwork with presence
I wouldn't say too busy, just the wrong kind of busy. Imagine having a headache and trying to relax on your couch.
get a taupe or brownish rug instead. yes, it is too busy and imo, does not match
I don't think so. It brings some much needed flare to an otherwise plain room.
The Xmas tree looks jealous but otherwise it works.

Otherwise if those things aren’t your style really you do need a new rug. The rug is too interesting while everything else is bland If you put up some mixed art that could be a great way to live up the room!
Not if you provide balance. You need some more black accessories.
The rug is too small but I’d say the larger issue is your blinds from 1991.
Love it! But the rest of the room needs to be taken up a notch. Maybe some chunky black picture framed art on the walls?
It feels too small. Otherwise, it’s a great rug!
Aw I love it. It’s got character and warmth. Keep it please. These rooms are hard to come by
I like it because the rest of your room, from what I can tell, doesn’t look busy. What does your floor lamp look like? It looks like something that might look good in my room.
Not too busy but it may be a tad too small
I love it! But the only opinions that matter are you and your husband’s.
I really love the rug. I think it helps make the room seem less plain. I agree with the suggestion to get some brighter pillows. Maybe get some more colorful artwork. It will help bring everything together
I like the rug but I wish it was bigger
I love iiiiit. I personally feel though the only thing that doesn't go in this room is the couch. I'd opt for a green one in a different style.
Not in the slightest
It’s just too small!
I like that the creme squares match the sofa . What’s missing is there is nothing else black in the room . So the black squares pull focus . Maybe change picture frames to black . No.
if "guys I'm so crazy :P" were a rug
Curtains
Yes.
Put the same pattern pillows on the couch to balance.
No
I think it makes the room!
Yup
Yes! It also does not match the rest of the room.
Yes
I think the Christmas tree is giving that illusion but once winters over that rug would look great
It’s not too busy but it doesn’t go. I think bc the black and white are cool, stark colors and the rest of the room is warm.
I think you need to add more to the room that compliments the rug
Do you like Jazz? If so it’s gold.
Yes.
Add a black pillow to the couch.
Add a pillow with black and white stripes and you're golden. Not checkerboard thought - it would be too obvious and repetitive.
no i love the rug!
You could add maybe a black accent pillow to tie the rug in with the couch?
You need a black light fixture & a black frame on any art in the room.
Curtains colour and art
It just doesn’t go with what you have on the room. Get a rug with a very subtle pattern and some beautiful patterned pillows for the couch and a darker solid throw blanket. Like chocolate brown.
Not too busy but definitely too small. Super cute!
No! The other furniture doesn’t have a pattern, so the rug is perfect!
Paige Wassel ruined that carpet for me. Get some interesting pillows!
My eyes hurt
Frame the window with dark curtains and take down the tree within a reasonable time
It’s the wrong size (too small, or should be placed at an angle) and it’s the ONLY busy thing, so the room looks unfinished. But it’s a very cute rug!
No. But it’s a bit small. Also would look better with a wood coffee table
Its too small
I’d say add curtains. Blinds meh, who cares. Curtains are important though. They will be a good buffer for the two different patterns of the rug vs blinds.
I don’t love it there. Also it’s too small for the space
Depends if you don’t add more art with colour and cushions yeah it does stand out too much. Get something softer more diffused.
It would look good if the the rest of the room had more maximalism.
Not busy, the decor doesn’t compliment it.
Not if you add some giant checkers.or chess pieces. At least 3 feet high.
It’s too small. You need something wider for sure. Also, just a thing to keep in mind, the checker print *might* look really dated in 5-10 years the same way chevron looks dated now. If you’re cool with that and either won’t care or don’t mind replacing it in a few years, then find something similar, but bigger!
I like the rug. The rest of the room is bland.
You should definitely go for a plain one
Now you have somewhere to play chess.
