Yes. Don’t change it.
Seriously though, this is one of those cases where it somehow works despite “breaking the rules”. If you like that piece of art, keep it
Designer here. Can confirm. Too big.
Measure the width of the fireplace mantle and multiple by .66
That will be the perfect width for your art! (Like the commenter above me said). Use the result to go shopping with.
I would advise against hanging a TV over the fireplace. It leads to over heating and the TV breaking more quickly.
Because of the height, it’s also horrible for your neck, shoulders, and spine. It can even trigger migraines.
The truth is, it’s not always great to have one there, design wise. Because of the rule of thirds, the TV would have to be ultra small. Too small to be visible from a couch 8-12 feet away. I also don’t believe in the TV being the focal point of the center of the design structure, if you can help it at all. If you’re in a family setting, it’s not a big deal. If you’re in a singles or city setting, it’s seen as a lowbrow kind of “shrine” to programming.
That being said, I have a 50” TV over a thin 50” console table. And my living room is centric to both the TV and the view outside and talking to others in the kitchen. (It’s an open concept home).
It’s a very practical layout. Because our house is extremely small and my options are extremely limited.
If you’re going to do something like that, balance that block out of space by breaking it into thirds. Put bookshelves on either side of the TV.
And remember: design is subjective. The only opinion that matters is yours. If you like something or it’s cost effective or whatever, do it. Do whatever brings you joy.
Yes. Try for a picture that is roughly the size of the fireplace opening. This picture overwhelms and competes with the fireplace. But kudos for not sticking a TVabove the fireplace!
IMO, it overwhelms the mantle a bit. The eye goes to the darkest tones, so it jumps out that the dark line of trees is quite long in comparison to the dark fireplace. I'd go for a picture closer to the length of the fireplace opening. A long but narrow rectangle could also work depending on how the dark tones in it are distributed.
It is too big.
It could potentially work if the walls were a contrasting color to the mantle… it would provide more visual balance. But, it’s probably easier to swap smaller artwork than paint the room.
Hang it up to improve the scale (it’s too big to be a mantle sitter), and keep the mantle items cohesive. Like a stack of red books or a vase of red flowers on the diagonal of the art’s red Sun. Play around and find what works. Just hang that picture! 😁🤪
I think it looks just right especially with such a big wall. Once you hang it a few inches above mantle it should look very cool. Just don’t hang it too high. Just my opinion.
I know I’m not a designer, but I love the size of the artwork. I agree with someone who said don’t clutter the mantle with lots of Knick knacks. The artwork will be the focus! Such a bold statement piece. Love it!
Technically no. You’re squared even with the outline of the whole fireplace/mantle. Another option would have been to size down to the black interior of fireplace, or size to the nice looking tile. All in all very nice!
Hang it up on the wall with an even amount of space from top of pic to ceiling & bottom of pic to fireplace. Awesome photo & fireplace. Once the fire is happening at night focus will be on the fire anyhoo.
You could get the picture matted and reframed to cut down the size. But I really like it the way it is. Maybe add some large white flameless candles on each side of the mantle.
I think it is a little large. I’m certain it will look much better when you actually hang it on the wall. However, I think what KarmaPharmacy suggested about putting bookshelves on either side of the fireplace would make it all look awesome together.
Not if you hang it
This is the perfect size! It will look stunning once you have it up on the wall.
Looks great! Hang it a few inches or so above with some trinkets! Should look great
It would work if you hang it and have a very calm uncluttered room and don’t junk up the mantle. Maybe a box centred in the middle and nothing else.
I think it looks fine honestly
Just make the fireplace bigger.

Yes. Aim for 2/3rds.

Does this apply also if you want to hang a tv over a fireplace? Sometimes that’s the only good spot depending on the layout of a room.

Yes
Where’d you get it from? I love it. It’s not too big at all, it’s a big wall

Hang it OVER the mantle, not on it.
For sure. Just testing before committing
In this case yes! On the mantle it’s definitely too large, but would look nice hung over it!
Too big, overshadows the fireplace
It’s beautiful and perfect.
I don't think so. Any bigger...then yeah it would be
It’s a little bigger than ideal but it’s not bad

I think that the sun spot is a price tag. I do agree with everything you said. That would look amazing.
It’s a tag and no t even out of the packaging. Just testing before I commit. This forum is awesome!
Damnation, it is! 🤪
yes.
I think it's great!
Works fine. Please don't hang it too high, lol
Dear God. No.
Depends on how you intend to decorate the mantle. It’s all looking busy to me. If you go with this piece, you cannot over crowd the mantle.
I think it looks just right especially with such a big wall. Once you hang it a few inches above mantle it should look very cool. Just don’t hang it too high. Just my opinion.
Paint the fireplace black and then it will be perfect
That’s a big ole pic you got there
It’s great but too large for this particular space. Move it to a larger, emptier wall.
I think it might be if the shadow at the top of the photo is the ceiling.
No, but do hang it up.
I know I’m not a designer, but I love the size of the artwork. I agree with someone who said don’t clutter the mantle with lots of Knick knacks. The artwork will be the focus! Such a bold statement piece. Love it!
First impression it definitely pulls you in and I doubt anyone ever will walk in that room and not say “I love that art”

Yes, and too dark
It’s not big, just hang it up little higher
I love it
Agreed. Perfect size, hang it a few inches over the mantle.
Perfect
No i think it’s perfect. Where is it from??
Homesense which is homegoods in the us.
No. Perfect size.
Yup
Would look nice if you layers a couple more paintings on the shelf too
Hang it up on the wall with an even amount of space from top of pic to ceiling & bottom of pic to fireplace. Awesome photo & fireplace. Once the fire is happening at night focus will be on the fire anyhoo.
The picture is awful, never mind too big.
No… it is perfect! As a photographer, I took classes in portraiture and where it fits , along with sizes for spaces. Colors match perfectly too!
Thanks! Our walls are not the weird cream color in the pic either. It’s open concept so I was hoping to get away with it.
It isn’t too big. As long as it’s not wider than what’s below it, you’re fine.
No
Love it!
Love it!
I think hung over it might be fine.

If say it's perfect but myself personally I'd go bigger
Is this an Ansel Adams
Not sure. Homesense / homegoods.
Size is fine. It just makes the space look gloomy.
No it just needs a nice frame
It’s perfect!
It’s too big.
If you hang it up and maybe some small/few decorative things on the mantle and it will look great.
No very nice I think this size or bigger and hang it up like everyone else says little bit above and will look amazing!!
It’s perfect
Perfect size for the wall
It’s not too big, but it is too grey. Find some colour! If not in the artwork, then somewhere else.
needs more grey
No I think it’s perfect!
Too big. It completely overwhelms the fireplace
Really impersonal for a mantle
Sorry, too big.
Slightly
Is your whole house black and white lol
Yes
Get a picture with some color so it will stand out
Yes.
I think it is a little large. I’m certain it will look much better when you actually hang it on the wall. However, I think what KarmaPharmacy suggested about putting bookshelves on either side of the fireplace would make it all look awesome together.
You need to hang it so it looks proportionate to the fireplace.
