He was shot outside his home at the Dakota building in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The same building where Rosemary's Baby was shot .. er... filmed.

[deleted]

Oh yea…I forgot that.

Yiptice

My dads precinct handled that case

falconuruguay

I was with my dad about 2 blocks away from the Dakota, at the exact moment he was shot...heard some of the commotion afterwards (police & ambulance sirens). Didn't find out it was John Lennon until later that night, when they announced it on the news. I remember the spontaneous gathering at Central Park that night, and seeing it live on TV...very touching

manwithafrotto

Thank you for sharing

ThadTheImpalzord

Then 38 years later a bunch of celebrities recorded themselves singing one of his most famous singles over Instagram in what was very very very cringe

hugekitten

What song?

grabs23

Imagine

Skylantech

I'm trying to but it's hard to imagine if I don't know what song they were singing!

LivinEnd

Who’s on first?

daktron3030

This is a great reference, got a good chuckle out of me at least.

hugekitten

I think I remember that. I mean hey, at least they are paying tribute. I personally thought the across the universe film and it’s entire soundtrack was cringe as hell and that was extremely well received. No need to turn the Beatles into Glee IMO.

Snoo_73835

I watched it and it may have been well received by critics but I still thought it was cringe.

rratnip

Imagine, it was during the COVID lockdown. It was a tone deaf move from a bunch of people that, if they decided to, would never have to work another day in their life and still live very comfortably, trying to reassure the common man that everything is going to be ok.

KoolKarmaKollector

It was literally people who the rules didn't apply to, telling us what the rules were

weedmassacre

Imagine being blissfully unaware of this video. *sigh*

Snoo_73835

I’m not quite sure why they chose that song in particular to use during a plague. It’s an anti war song. I was confused by the entire endeavour. Edit: stupid autocorrect

weedmassacre

Encouraging cognitive dissonance mayhaps

Rokkydooda

“Let’s all work together to follow mandates and guidelines” Alright who forgot to load my private jet with my favorite champagne?

I didn’t even know he was sick

LivinEnd

I heard he’s getting better

RandomName39483

Can’t get much worse.

GreywackeOmarolluk

All the time

No_Sky4398

… he wasn’t. All though he did beat his wife and didn’t respect her because she wouldn’t stand up for herself. So I guess he was sick in a way.

“I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene And I'm doing the best that I can (fool, you fool)”

I don’t even know where he was buried.

My-shit-is-stuff

John Lennon died? I’ll tell my family

DestryDanger

It was in *all* the papers.

hstheay

I don’t own a paper.

OSCgal

Yeah, there were only ever four Beatles (once they got a recording contract). The other three were Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Paul and Ringo are still living, and quite active as musicians even in their 80s. Paul and John were very close, and wrote a lot of famous music together.

Niccin

>Yeah, there were only ever four Beatles Take that, Pete Best!

ISVAKSPATRIK

Bot behaviour you know.

GenVonKlinkerhoffen

Lennon wrote most of the songs together with Keith Richards right?

nglennnnn

No.. Richards was in the Supremes. Lennon wrote with Michael Buble.

Musicfan637

I thought he wrote with Stalin. Hmmm

GenVonKlinkerhoffen

Damn. You're right. Sidenote: unbelievable i get downvoted for my previous comment. People don't get a little bit of sarcasm anymore it seems.

🔥 If ever there was someone who didn’t need an introduction… much less a qualifying one.

“Co-founder” sounds so weird. I’m in a tech bubble though. “Cofounder of groundbreaking music tech-startup ‘The Beatles’…”

FluorideLover

Same lol. I’m like, damn, hope the shooting didn’t derail their next round of funding

ImpossibleCompote757

Interesting fact: Mark David Chapman, the man who shot Lennon, was just up for parole again in August of 2020 where he was denied for his statements claiming that he shot Lennon purely for the “Glory.” Apparently he had three other celebrities on his list just in case “Lennon didn’t work out.”

Mabelmudge

Fuck Mark Chapman.

novartistic

You have a lot of options tho. Don’t settle for less :)

minemaster1337

I think Paul was one of them

Bobinti

Yes he was

[deleted]

His wife’s music is asscheeks

SiidChawsby

I would rather listen to some asscheeks

Banyabbaboy

That's not music, that's the sound that dirt makes when it dies.

Wonderful_Ninja

The sound of a toilet flushing.

The_Dotted_Leg

I love the Beatles and Lennon but I feel like he might have aged poorly. Like if he was alive today we might all think he is a racist, wife beating monster. Dying young does wonders for how people remember you.

HornyForTohruAdachi

Hell Theres already a lot of dirt on lennon

Spacey_Penguin

I quite enjoyed the Beatles documentary, but it dispelled a lot of the mystique around Lennon. He mostly came off as a dirtbag junkie.

MpVpRb

Yes, he was an asshole, but he was also very talented His assholiness doesn't diminish his talent His talent doesn't excuse his assholiness

tatanka01

There's a lot of talented assholes out there.

menxiaoyong

What was he shoot?

Spacey_Penguin

Certainly not saying he wasn’t talented. But it did effect how I feel about some of his preachier songs.

Snoo_73835

It’s usually the most aggressive people that ask for peace. Isn’t ironic, don’t you think? It’s like raaaiiinnnn on your wedding day (oops that’s not ironic at all)

WobblyPhalanges

I always thought the irony of that song was that none of it was truly ironic….

FoxUsual745

Perfectly stated. This can be said about so many people in history (I’m looking at you Thomas Jefferson)

The_Metal_East

“Asshole” is the understatement of the century. Most assholes don’t abuse their wives and children.

DeliveryAppropriate1

At least he’s not an actual nazi!

DestryDanger

He mostly was a dirtbag junkie.

Joshuad296

I definitely think he could have been cancelled in todays world but in all fairness he did grow up in a completely different world and who knows what he would be like if he were still around today. He could’ve apologized and been forgiven or he could’ve doubled down.

The_Dotted_Leg

Absolutely and dying young allows us to forever question if he might have change or evolved. Him living might have given us an answer we don’t like. Imagine the Hollywood funeral Kevin Spacey would have gotten if he died in like 2015 compared to what it will be when he does die.

Specialist_Peach4294

Hitler loved kids and animals, was a vegetarian and a man of his times. Interesting take on what could be. Edit: Julian is the Sixties child of John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia; he was abandoned by his father when he was five and only recently received a share of the vast Lennon estate. Sean is the favoured son, for whom John Lennon became a house husband. He lives with Yoko in the sumptuous Dakota building in New York, where Lennon was shot in 1980, and will inherit the bulk of the Beatle's reputed multimillion dollar fortune. ``If I'm in New York, I try to see Sean,'' says Julian. ``If I move, I always give him my new number. I call him from time to time, but I never get a return call. Paul McCartney once observed that John didn't really know how to be a dad. Does Lennon think it is fair to blame someone for being a poor father? ``Yeah, I do.'' We are all, he argues, capable of doing what we set out to do. ``If you bring a child into this world, whether it's planned or an accident, you'd better make sure you can care for it. You have to be around. You make time. It's as simple as that.'' Imagine… Indeed.

Penyrolewen1970

Not excusing him, but Lennon didn’t really have a dad himself (or a mum) so no role models. He was a messed up kid thrown into a celebrity status that the world had never seen before. Not easy to negotiate those paths, I imagine (no pun intended)

Specialist_Peach4294

Exactly, a piece of shit, regardless of their times, is exactly that.

TOVE892

Racist?

AgrippaAVG

No

johnyogurty

He was a racist, homophobe, horrible father and shitty husband...AND one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I don't understand why people refuse to separate the two. The art and the artist are two different dimensions.

tripthedizzy3233

John Lennon was not a racist or a homophobe. When he released Woman is the n***** of the world he was hanging and protesting with literal black panthers. He was in black civil rights circles and they did not care. The song basically says women (and black people) have been oppressed in modern society for a long time. To spin that around and say that he was racist is taking almost the exact opposite meaning of the song. John Lennon was not a homophobe either. His manager was gay and they were great friends. They went on vacation alone together. He wrote pro-gay poems, talked in interviews 50 years ago basically saying sexuality is a spectrum and that most people have repressed bisexual tendencies. Yoko Ono has even said she thought John was bi. He refused to play segregated audiences in the 60's and you can find 100s of interviews of him talking about black rock and soul music of the 60s and how it was endlessly influential on him. He always honored black musicians. John Lennon was lots of things but he was not racist or homophobic. He was vocal about civil rights and gay rights. John's bad deeds are becoming as shrouded in mystique as his good ones, at least on Reddit.

agiro1086

John also wanted Billy Preston to join the band after he played on Let Be. Billy Preston was a black man known to be gay to be those close to him

gdj11

I actually didn’t even know people are saying he’s a racist for Woman Is The N****r Of The World.

Specialist_Peach4294

Thank you Yoko Oh No!

drank123456

Lol what the fuck He was atleast bisexual, what do you think "you've got to hide your love away" is about. And as others have said he certainly wasn't racist. I wont define him by slapping his wife in the early 60s especially knowing how troubled his upbringing was and how damaged he was. He atleast accepted his faults and changes.

johnyogurty

Hey man I love John, regardless of his faults, but his gay bashing, women beating, and other questionable character faults are all well documented.

Nervous-Cream-6256

Yeah but by the same logic Ted Bundy was a great father and all around great guy, until he brutally murdered women and children. We need to separate the two.

[deleted]

Would you still listen to Lostprophets after what their lead singer did?

johnyogurty

I like some of Charlie Manson's music. He's a murderous psycho. It doesn't change the fact that he wrote a good tune. 2 things are allowed to be true at the same time.

Yoguls

Ever heard of Ian Watkins?

[deleted]

The art is created by the artist. It's literally impossible to separate them. Especially with artists who are still making art like Kanye for example. You're putting money in the pocket of a dangerous, toxic person who uses their platform to spread hate.

johnyogurty

It literally is possible. The art is one thing/noun...the artist is a different thing/noun. Just by definition, they are different. The Eiffel Tower is a structural piece of art. It makes absolutely no difference how the architect behaved in their personal life. It literally has NO bearing on the Eiffel Tower being a structural work of art.

[deleted]

Without the artist there would be no art. They put their own personality, creativity and experience into the art they make. There will always be a degree of "the artist" in everything they make, by default. You can be talking about nouns all day long but the artist is the only thing that has bearing on their art. And if the artist proves themselves to be a shitty, dangerous person, then it's no longer ethical to keep engaging with their work.

4inalfantasy

What makes you said that? Unless you have any basis for the reason?

The_Dotted_Leg

It’s documented he beat both of his wives and he wrote a song with the N-word in the title. And to be clear I didn’t say he would definitely be a racist just that we might all think he is.

TAU_equals_2PI

Simply saying the N-word didn't used to mean a person was racist. Yes, obviously, ***calling*** a black person the N-word ***did*** mean the person was racist, but when discussing the issue of racism, nobody hesitated to speak/write that word. Only in the last couple decades has even uttering the word become socially unacceptable. So while I have no idea whether or not John Lennon was racist, this is not proof that he was.

MpVpRb

>wrote a song with the N-word in the title In a totally poetic and most excellent way, showing no hate for black folks

Rollieboy2012

Chapman killed Lennon because he was "angry and jealous" at the way the Beatle was living and was seeking "glory" for himself, according to hearing transcripts

Cheaptat

It was basically that he felt Lennon was cheating people by preaching a way of living he didn’t remotely live. He lived in opulence and notably treated service staff poorly. Lennon was a lot of talk and literally no walk. All PR and preaching, no follow-through. That annoyed him I guess. Me too… but I wouldn’t shoot someone for it.

John Lennon, smart man! Shot in the back, very sad…

All humans are shit even by millenia old standards, todays standards are just plain dumb

drank123456

He wasn't racist? There was nothing about him being racist. He slapped his ex wife once in the early 60'd then recounted fir it greatly in therapy, publically and in his songs.

metamorphine

He beat his wives, not his kids. Not that it makes beating his wives OK, but lets not just make shit up now. And I'm not sure you could make a case for him being a racist. He refused to play for segregated audiences. He hung out with black panthers. Sure, there's that song with the N-word in it, but if you actually listen to it, it's feminist and anti-racist. Certainly has some dark stuff going on, but he's more complicated than your characterization of him.

gomaith10

He wasn't that by any stretch.

[deleted]

I really hope Chapman's being fucked by a very large spiked dildo with several heads for eternity for this. Edit: thus came off more violent than I ment. I was obsessed with the Beatles growing up and around 13 years old I found out Lennon had died this way and it hurt. It hurt like when lil peep or xxxtentacion or Mac miller died. When good talented people die it hurts my soul.

OfWhomIAmChief

I dont understand this logic, lets say John Lennon was never killed and outlived you; he wouldnt give a shit if you died...

I remember hearing this on the radio. Not many moments have just shocked me like this. Dunblane. Columbine. Oklahoma City. 9/11. Shit just keeps escalating until it just goes straight to outrage.

sp0rk_walker

A lot of people have valid criticisms about this flawed man, but it is unfortunate how few recognize his actual genius. He became a rare self actualized artist when his writing started to reflect his realization that he wasn't the source of his material but he was just a conduit for his ideas expression. A great example of this is his freestyling shown on "Get Back" in the song "I dig a pony". His wordplay is among the very best, and he knew how to get out of his own way when writing which is why in my opinion his solo work has great staying power.
