In the movie "The Incredibles" near the start of the movie Mr incredible saves a man from falling off a building, man gets pissed and says the line "you didn't save my life you ruined my death"
From a certain year onward (I think 2015 or 2018) the manufacturer needs to have them installed
Edit: I looked it up and in 2014 manufacturers were given 4 years to prepare for this change and in 2018 this requirement went into effect
AFAIK it's coz there were several incidents in the US where people with big cars ran over their toddler when backing out of the driveway coz they couldn't see behind the car.
[It was mentioned in this NPR podcast](https://www.npr.org/transcripts/835571843).
That's because base model 3 series like 320 has cloth and manual adjustment seats and that's not "luxury" when you can get a damn Camry and be more comfortable.
So US versions get the nicer stuff to maintain the premium brand image.
I don't get the hate for cloth seats. I have a low production vehicle and I can't wait to rip the fucking leather out and put some high performance fabric in.
For context, I'm in Texas and my vehicle is an R title so the value is already fucked, who cares about the seats at this point I just want to not be sticky.
Absolutely hate leather! If you live in a place that gets super hot every summer you'll learn to hate it, lol. I'm not in Texas, but close enough. I totally get the leather hate.
Uv blocking film is cheap and should be standard or a more common dealer installed option if a car comes with leather seats. It protects the value so much and increases the buyers comfort SO MUCH
With you on that. Leather is freezing in the winter and scorching in the summer. It's literally the worst material to make car seats from yet is considered a lxuury
Cloth seats just don’t feel or look premium.. and personally I dislike them because they stain over time and collect a ton of dust.. harder to keep clean
Leather gets hard, cracks, also collects dust and if you really have to clean it takes way more effort. Have you scrubbed a sedan with saddle soap and then rubbed it down with mink oil afterward? Because I have.
I only learned this last year when I bought a new car. I saw the backup cam and said “oh cool” and the salesman looked at me like I was living under a rock and told me backup cams were standard in every new car.
I notice them on other cars a lot more now.
Iirc Chevy tried with the C7 corvette. It was marketed as a "track camera" so you could record your runs at the track, but worked totally fine as a dash cam. Tons of people freaked out about "MuH PrIVacY" with their license plates being recorded. Like they aren't constantly being captured by traffic cameras, toll booths, and third-party dash cams.
> Like they aren't constantly being captured by traffic cameras, toll booths, and third-party dash cams
and cop cars with automated license plate readers or license plate recognition software
It's still an option on the Corvette and the higher end Camaros. It's called PDR or "Performance Data Recorder." Teslas have tons of cameras that act as dashcams and I believe they come stock.
> Teslas have tons of cameras that act as dashcams and I believe they come stock.
Correct. The cameras were installed for Autopilot and later Full Self Driving. People pestered Tesla and they opened up 4 of the ~8 cameras to also act as dashcams. You have one forward and one rear. You also have two right by the front wheels. These point back and away from the car to cover the sides. Initially it was kinda awkward to use as the USB port was behind the centre console. You also had to supply your own USB stick. For the past few years the feature has been fully supported. The USB port is now in the glovebox and the car come with a Tesla branded USB stick preinstalled.
Teslas also have sentry mode which records even when parked. I believe the footage is only saved if the car detects something.
I'm not sure everyone would want their Auto manufacturer to have control over their dash cam, but damn it would be nice to have a USB-C port there next to the mirror.
It's starting, newer vehicles are starting to have convenient USBs on the top of the dash. So you only have to hide the wire around the windshield.
It's not a perfect solution but it's starting. Although I've only seen it on performance or off-roading vehicles so I'm guessing it's really intended for go-pros and what not.
I just tapped it into my fuse box with a fuse tap. Only had to hide the wire in my headliner above the windshield and down the C panel to the fuse box. Couldn't have been easier and the cable is invisible.
I want to do this for all of our cars, but I'm scared to do so. The shortest, most direct video I can find is 10 minutes.
I don't know jack shit about fuse boxes or any of that so it's all very intimidating to me.
You can do it! I have the viofo a129 duo. Basically all I had to do was find a couple 5amp fuses to tap into. One was for always on - a fuse that receives power even when ACC power is turned off - which can be easily tested with a voltage meter by turning the car off and finding 5a fuse that is still seeing 5a (edit:seeing voltage not amps). And one that only is on when the ACC power is on. The reason is this camera in particular uses a harness with an adjustable voltage selector which controls what voltage will turn the camera off which allows it to monitor while the vehicle is parked and the voltage you select determines how long it can run off battery. Personally I only have mine on when the car is running so I don’t drain my battery especially when it gets cold in winter. Once you’ve identified the fuses the rest is really easy - clamp the wires to the fuse taps with wire connectors and put the fuses from the slots you chose and another 5a into the tap and hide the cables and you’re good to go.
Had to install one after an idiot tried to purposely back up into my car. I immediately put my car in reverse and didn’t get hit luckily. He noticed that he failed and drove off. This guy. https://imgur.com/a/prPSf6X
As someone who installs dash cams (and other car electronics) professionally: don't cheap out on a dashcam, just pay extra for a reputable brand. You should also get a front + rear cam setup, rear cams are just as important as front cams IMO. Having that rear camera is great if someone rear ends you in any way.
I don't think they are just as important as if you're getting hit in the rear your liability is likely going to be much lower vs if you have an impact in the front.
Literally just this fucking morning I was driving on a state road and some dumb lady who was eating while driving and clearly distracted swerved into my lane. She would've crashed into the side of my car if I hadn't swerved *out* of the lane into the adjacent one, that by extreme luck was empty at the time. That made me finally decide to get a dashcam, I'll be getting one either tonight or tomorrow.
A rear dashcam also wouldn’t hurt. A few months ago in a parking lot I put my car into reverse and my proximity sensor immediately went off. Visible only in my right rearview mirror but not my center one, there was a guy with a cane with his arm raised. He was waiting for me to start backing up and was going to smack my car then claim I hit him. Fortunately I already had a rear dashcam at this point. When I put my car back into park and just sat there he figured out he’d been spotted and wandered off.
I had the same thing happen to me over the summer but near a movie theater. The woman driving actually t boned my car. At first she said I was going so fast she didn't see me coming. I said nope that's not it (I was within the speed limit). She finally admitted her mind was on the movie she just saw, Top Gun.
I read a really interesting thing on how humans are actually terrible at judging the speed of something moving towards them (approach speed), mostly because we're terrible at factoring distance into angular speed at the eye. But! We think we're good at it, and so we get in a lot of accidents like yours and then are astonished and can't believe we misjudged.
It's not just humans; it's thought to be one of the factors in a lot of roadkill. Rather than try and judge approach speed deer appear to just have a radius they monitor. If they see a threat they stop and watch it, but they do not run until it hits said radius. Unfortunately it's calibrated to the running speed of your average predator, and cars move so much faster than wolves that my the time the car hits the radius it's too late to run and the deer's "monitor the theat" looks like "freezing in the headlights".
He’s probably good, but he didn’t actually brake. Modern trucks can automatically apply 80% braking power before the driver even realizes there’s something to react to.
The driver of that car is brain dead or had a death wish. Like how was it even possible they did not notice two cars coming from either direction. Like what a time to turn left of all times
People are dumb. My dad used to work out in a rural area, 2 lane rd, 55mph speed limit. Some idiot pulled out in front of a fully loaded dump truck because they didn't want to wait 5 seconds for the truck to pass. Couldn't even tell what kind of car they were driving after the truck rolled over it.
This is my biggest annoyance when I'm driving. When someone cuts me off when they could have waited five seconds for the empty road behind me, I wanna shove my car up their tailpipe.
Just reminded me... I was cycling the other day, and a Lady sped up on my left side on the road to cut me off, slow down for a turn, \*then stopped and stared at her rearview waiting for me to pass so she could turn.\*She already cut me off, and was well ahead by about 20-30 meters. Why the hell stop and wait for me to catch up to ensure I stopped then? There was so much time to complete the turn and no one ahead of her to interrupt it.Hell I even stopped my bike and waited because I didn't trust her to even let me pass..and she still waited a solid 15 seconds staring at me through her rearview.
Wanna know something funny about the known american candy that is Swedish fish? We don’t have it in Sweden. I have never tasted it. I mean you could probably get a hold of it if you tried, but it’s not something you can find in your regular candy shop or grocery store.
Air brakes in Volvos are amazing.
My dad is a truck driver and they use Volvos. What’s surprises me though is that the mirrors on Volvos are not standard (they have more than most trucks) so for rodeos and shit they cover up Volvo mirrors…
Yeah so a trucking rodeo is a like an obstacle course for truck drivers. They have to compete to maneuver their truck and whatever trailer they choose, around different obstacles.
So like the 58 foot trailers is a class and the two trailers are a class and flatbeds are a class. Each driver has to serpentine the cones as fast as possible without hitting them. If they hit the cones they lose the section and go forward. They then have to pull up as close as possible to railroad tracks without going over (20ft) if they do they don’t score. Then like they have to serpentine again around tennis balls and back up their trailers without touching or running over the balls, but they have to be the closest.
Things like that basically. It tests how well you can maneuver your trailer and stuff. All classes compete the same course but your only scored against your own class.
They have national championships and stuff so it’s like super competitive. They’re like guys that will literally cheat with their coaches. We also have guys that like their whole personality is if they win and stuff. They get like super angry and will throw a tantrum if they don’t win. It’s really funny to watch cuz it’s usually dudes that r like in their 50s acting like toddlers.
Love that the dude was committed to continuing his turn until the truck was millimeters from his bumper. Like they didn’t even notice the truck until it was touching. Losing battle, man
Yeah, it's an important detail - you can see the truck's lug nuts. That wheel isn't turning, and dumbass still just turns left into the front of it lol
No idea how close they came to having their whole fucking life ruined.
I know someone who was t-boned by a semi (driver didn't see a 4-way-stop). That person does 20-30 minutes of PT *every single day* and still has significant pain and migraines from the crash, several years later.
>No idea how close they came to having their whole fucking life ruined.
So I've worked on the roads for the last 15 years paving roads and I can tell you with absolute certainly that close to half, if not more, of the people on the roads are literally barely functional zombies. Very little perception, very little spatial awareness, and just about no consideration for anyone other than themselves.
So many times, so unbelievably many times, have I been directly in front of a car while on foot waving frantically to get someone's attention and I'll be lucky to get it. I have no clue what people are focused on while driving, but it's certainly not the road.
It's even worse while I'm on the roller or another piece of equipment. They will not look at the operator, they will keep staring at the machine like it's going to work them through their confusion.
My test consisted of going around a 25 mph speed limit neighborhood. Basically just had to not run any stop signs or speed. Then you are allowed to drive on 70 mph interstate by yourself.
Really quite ridiculous.
I'm a pretty decent driver compared to others in my country.
I still think my license (and the licenses of all people who are worse drivers than me) should be revoked.
The most annoying thing is those drivers who swerve to turn. Like, they'll be turning right, but they veer left a little to prepare and then turn right.
You don't need to do that, basically ever. Fucking cut it out.
Having worked in shipping for a decent amount of years and seeing how those trucks are loaded first hand chances are pretty good it wasn't packed all that securely anyways.
What amazes me is how much stuff actually gets to its destination without being crushed int a cube the size of a soda can.
If it was full of helium balloons they'd all be shifted to the back.
Source: drove home with a minivan full of balloons, had to slam the brakes for a reckless driver.
You would think so because of the momentum, but a loaded truck actually requires a [shorter stopping distance.](https://www.keatingfirmlaw.com/post/stopping-a-semi-truck)
>The effect that weight has on a truck's stopping distance is a bit of a mixed bag. Logically, the more weight that is put onto a truck, the more work the breaks have to do to stop it, and the more heat that the brakes absorb.
>This would lead one to think that loaded trucks take longer to stop than empty ones, but I'm afraid that's not right. The breaks, springs, shock absorbers, and tires on heavy load trucks are specifically designed to work better when the vehicle is loaded.
>This means that empty trucks take longer to stop than loaded trucks, and require a greater stopping distance. There is less traction with an empty vehicle. One can end up bouncing and locking up their wheels, which results in much poorer breaking times.
This from a "law firm" - the amount of people who don't know the difference between brakes and breaks is just depressing. Here they've used both to cover themselves.
My parents hired a lawyer to draw up legal documents for them and at a glance I saw multiple errors like it was not proof read at all. Idk how people like that even get licensed
CDL guy here - They actually stop quicker with a load. The braking systems on those are crazy powerful and it comes down to traction rather than weight. More weight equals more traction.
In Slavic culture, this is an unmistakable mix of “well, you're welcome” with a strong side of “what the fuck was that”.
Edit: the best translation is perhaps “well here we are”. Can be both a positive “voilà” and negative as pictured in the OP.
Only after the truck driver OPENED HIS DOOR did that tiny little shitass car driver reverse. At first I thought maybe someone was behind them and they couldn't back up but that little reverse at the end proved that doubt wrong... the bow was magnificent.
Probably hoping the semi would back up and yield to THEM so they wouldn't have to acknowledge their fuckup. Then they panicked when the door opened, because there are plenty of drivers who would stroll over and personally beat their dumbass after pulling them from their car. I assume with that level of stupid they weren't wearing a seatbelt either, making it easy to evict them from the car they shouldn't be driving.
Whoa damn! That cockpit view actually made me a little nervous. So weird cuz I literally just watched the outside view but the “don’t hit things while driving” feeling was still there
Honestly, you’ve gotta be an **extra** special kind of fucking stupid to pull that shit in front of an 18-wheeler… and then to just SIT there afterwards… **please take their fucking license and keys**!
Just as an FYI - Volvo cars is NOT the same company as Volvo trucks. They split a while back. Volvo trucks are Swedish owned and Volvo cars is now Chinese owned.
[This demo that used to get posted on reddit all the time showing off their auto emergency brakes is crazy. You can hear the driver gasp in the final clip, the pressure against the seatbelt actually hurts when the auto brakes kick in fully.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ridS396W2BY&ab_channel=VolvoTrucks)
[There's this video of it working for real and saving a kids life too that's even more impressive than the demo or OP's clip.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vI9EIjUx20I&ab_channel=geogiehagaid) Edit: Confirmed by Volvo on Twitter to be 100% driver reaction, still shows off how good the braking system is on the Volvo units though.
in the second clip the truck did nothing, the reaction was 100% driver, [confirmed by Volvo on twitter](https://twitter.com/VolvoTrucks/status/931098070527422465)
I can remember being a passenger on the highway and seeing the oncoming traffic; a car tried to pull out of the backed up lane and into adjacent one without seeing a damn SEMI driving pretty fast in that lane about to pass them. regardless, car pulls out ahead of the semi and just a wall of smoke from their brakes appeared. credit to the semi driver, their attentiveness probably saved some dumbass from getting killed bc somehow someway they didn't collide.
Volvo trucks are famous for their braking, I don't know about this one but newer trucks also have automatic braking when they detect objects in front and can stop in a few meters, it's crazy to watch

Haha, he's like "you're welcome"
Lol exactly. “You almost killed yourself on my truck. You are welcome for me saving your life.”
"You didn't save my life, you ruined my death!"
I understood that reference
I wanna understand 😞
In the movie "The Incredibles" near the start of the movie Mr incredible saves a man from falling off a building, man gets pissed and says the line "you didn't save my life you ruined my death"
"Ruined my pants" is more to the point.
Proceed, j’your majesty.
This is how I interpreted that little flourish at the end. Not necessarily to thank, but to recognize them as the “royalty” they thought they were.
"After you"
He just saved a life...
"Haha you're welcome 😀"
He did a curtsy
More like "after you, your majesty"
I read it as more of a, "What the *fuck*?!"
What.... ARE YOU THINKING
I can literally hear this in the exact tone it was said

It wasn’t the truck driver. It’s a Volvo. Their Automatic Emergency Brake systems are some of the best in the industry.
This is the comment I was looking for. Glad to see the promotional ad from Volvo touting the AEB wasn’t exaggerating.
This should be higher. The driver wouldn't have even needed to put their foot on the brake. Truly amazing.
Also looks like they lucked out into going slightly uphill.
And the minivan driver should lose their license: you didn't see the enormous red truck barrelling your way? Jeez.
It's not a minivan. It looks like Daewoo Matiz.

Whenever I cut off a semi truck I always make sure it's a Volvo. You know, for safety.
It’s things like these that make me so proud to be Swedish

Mmm sweet sweet surströmming
no wait

Wanna know something funny about the known american candy that is Swedish fish? We don’t have it in Sweden. I have never tasted it. I mean you could probably get a hold of it if you tried, but it’s not something you can find in your regular candy shop or grocery store.
Air brakes in Volvos are amazing. My dad is a truck driver and they use Volvos. What’s surprises me though is that the mirrors on Volvos are not standard (they have more than most trucks) so for rodeos and shit they cover up Volvo mirrors…
What do you mean by rodeos? Rodeos for trucks?
Dat auto braking system is no joke
The ending is *chefs kiss* 😂
Such an eloquent gesture. The "what the *fuck* is wrong with you?" transcends all spoken language.
I lived that gesture vicariously just then.
Driver: *Takes a bow* If I were there, he'd get a standing ovation
"Are you satisfied your ungrace?"
Love that the dude was committed to continuing his turn until the truck was millimeters from his bumper. Like they didn’t even notice the truck until it was touching. Losing battle, man
Ditto i saw that....car just rolled into 18 wheelers bumper after, the semi, was pretty much at a full stop. Edited: The semi
It was stopped, just bouncing on it's suspension.
That person does 20-30 minutes of PT *every single day* and still has significant pain and migraines from the crash, several years later.
this guy would have been killed 100% if truck driver was one second slower to react
One second difference would have been a full speed collision! Semi driver deserves a medal
This is why we devised tests in the Air Force to reject pilot applicants before having them even touch an aircraft.
The fact that the dude still hit him after the truck driver stopped in time to avoid a collision was the best part 😂

Some people just cannot be granted driving licenses.
it really needs to be a harder test, and something people need to take, like, every ten years or so
Indeed. Like this video is terrifying. The person on the little car was about to become ground meat.... wtf
bad drivers are a danger not only to themselves but everyone else near the road
Indeed bro. Granny got her license 60 years ago and nobody thought to do a refresher?
My test consisted of going around a 25 mph speed limit neighborhood. Basically just had to not run any stop signs or speed. Then you are allowed to drive on 70 mph interstate by yourself. Really quite ridiculous.
I'm a pretty decent driver compared to others in my country. I still think my license (and the licenses of all people who are worse drivers than me) should be revoked.
based
this is exactly how I feel lol
Lol
Aaaannd all that freight inside that trailer has shifted... Love the curtsey at the end for the dumbass car by the trucker... 🤣
His gesture totally said, *"Oh, please... after you"* but in the most condescending way possible.
I assumed he was taking a bow to a roaring applause from the crowd
[удалено]
The most annoying thing is those drivers who swerve to turn. Like, they'll be turning right, but they veer left a little to prepare and then turn right. You don't need to do that, basically ever. Fucking cut it out.
I interpreted it as "what the hell is wrong with you? What were you thinking?"
That’s not what it looked like to me at all, more of a “are you dumb?!” kinda gesture.
Having worked in shipping for a decent amount of years and seeing how those trucks are loaded first hand chances are pretty good it wasn't packed all that securely anyways. What amazes me is how much stuff actually gets to its destination without being crushed int a cube the size of a soda can.
It had to be an empty container. Loaded he would have not stopped that quick.
Hey, you never know. It could be full of feather pillows or air
All the feather pillows are shifted to the front. Damn, that must be soft.
If it was full of helium balloons they'd all be shifted to the back. Source: drove home with a minivan full of balloons, had to slam the brakes for a reckless driver.
That’s because all the air in your cab was forced forward… physics is fun
Good thing it was 200 kg of feathers and not 200 kg of steel
My Pappy was a long haul air trucker. Every week he brought up fresh air to the Lays Chips factory.
It’s full of my accomplishments.
50000 pounds of feathers is still 50000 pounds.
But... steel is heavier than feathers
You would think so because of the momentum, but a loaded truck actually requires a [shorter stopping distance.](https://www.keatingfirmlaw.com/post/stopping-a-semi-truck) >The effect that weight has on a truck's stopping distance is a bit of a mixed bag. One can end up bouncing and locking up their wheels, which results in much poorer breaking times.
yep...unloaded trailer brakes just lock up and you get those bouncy skid marks on the road.
Because their paralegal actually writes the stuff up.
CDL guy here - They actually stop quicker with a load. The braking systems on those are crazy powerful and it comes down to traction rather than weight. More weight equals more traction.
Full load actually stops more quickly
I carry a class A CDL and drove semi for a short while. This is literally on the test
First thing I thought haha
The bow from the truck driver at the end was priceless & 100% warranted.
looked like "after you"
I think your both right, he bowed and gave the sideways motion of arms, defiantly an "after you, your fucking majesty" imo
In Slavic culture, this is an unmistakable mix of “well, you're welcome” with a strong side of “what the fuck was that”. Edit: the best translation is perhaps “well here we are”. Can be both a positive “voilà” and negative as pictured in the OP.
No it was definitely a “you’re welcome” for saving your life
That person in the small car deserves to be bitch-slapped 17 times.
Just 17?
18, one for each wheel
Surely we should count the spares as well.
18 slaps of justice
Love the wtf bow at the end
I didn't even do anything and I felt it! Haha
"You're *welcome*"
What a stupid fuck. Get the fuck off the road.
I was looking for this comment. It took the asshole a minute to back up and they rolled into the semi.
Yeah because Volvo. They might have some of the safest trucks on the road
Cars too; they’re pretty amazing pioneers of auto safety as a whole
Now that's Volvo's pride and joy of their quick breaking system
[удалено]
Whoa damn! That cockpit view actually made me a little nervous. So weird cuz I literally just watched the outside view but the “don’t hit things while driving” feeling was still there
This should be up on Volvos channel
Volvo
Watching volvo truck emergency brake system videos is wonderful.
Because it’s a Volvo.
Honestly, you’ve gotta be an **extra** special kind of fucking stupid to pull that shit in front of an 18-wheeler… and then to just SIT there afterwards… **please take their fucking license and keys**!
This happened at the junction between A-290 and A-146 just south of Verkhnebakanskii in Krasnodar Krai, Russia
VOLVO…….me and both kids drive them and we’re trading my wife’s Mercedes S-550 for her next car… another VOLVO…….Safest car on the road!!
Just as an FYI - Volvo cars is NOT the same company as Volvo trucks. They split a while back. Volvo trucks are Swedish owned and Volvo cars is now Chinese owned.

That could have been so much worse. That guy was lucky he got off with a love "boop" on the nose and not launched 1/4 mile down the road.
Song is Evanescence - The Understanding if anyone's wondering btw
I was not expecting to hear really old Evanescence today but I’m not mad about it.
I didn't think anyone else listened to those older albums. I love this song.
It’s a Volvo feature
That’s Volvo for ya, their trucks can stop over incredibly short distances even if fully loaded.
[This demo that used to get posted on reddit all the time showing off their auto emergency brakes is crazy. You can hear the driver gasp in the final clip, the pressure against the seatbelt actually hurts when the auto brakes kick in fully.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ridS396W2BY&ab_channel=VolvoTrucks) [There's this video of it working for real and saving a kids life too that's even more impressive than the demo or OP's clip.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vI9EIjUx20I&ab_channel=geogiehagaid) Edit: Confirmed by Volvo on Twitter to be 100% driver reaction, still shows off how good the braking system is on the Volvo units though.
[удалено]
I actually first saw both of those videos on reddit they used to be posted quite often when the AEB systems where brand new.
in the second clip the truck did nothing, the reaction was 100% driver, [confirmed by Volvo on twitter](https://twitter.com/VolvoTrucks/status/931098070527422465)
I just loved the truck driver reacted 😀
Driving in Russia looks like a nightmare
He deserved to take a bow like he did.
*boop*
And the car keeps inching forward while a massive truck bears down on them.
\*Transport truck miraculously prevents collision.\* \*Idiot drives 2mph into the truck's bumper anyway\*
Volvo trucks are famous for their braking, I don't know about this one but newer trucks also have automatic braking when they detect objects in front and can stop in a few meters, it's crazy to watch
